Protechnius into iMovie image quality problems

We created a bmp animation with audio in Protechnius - it's a 90 MB AVI file. Play it with Media Player or QT (not QTPro) and it looks and sounds great. Music was longer than movie, so imported it into iMovie to clip it. When 'share' it to QT movie, looks awful no matter what we do. After reading several Posts, I realize that the computer monitor isn't as good as a TV monitor, but I don't understand why it looks great in Media Player and QT before iMovie, but awful after iMovie. Appreciate any help - the project's due tomorrow...of course.
Oh, btw, this is never going to be played on anything but a computer. I'm not trying to make a DVD-quality movie; I'm trying to make a computer-screen quality movie with clear, sharp images - like what you see on quality websites. It needs to be small enough to email...

AVI is just a container, much like a MOV. You never know what is actually inside this container.
When importing into iMovie, it's always converted to DV, which has a fixed resolution. Then share to QT movie and the movie is converted again. You have lost quality twice.
Try QT Pro instead. There you can crop the audio without quality loss.

Imovie slideshow image quality problems

I have created a slideshow in imove with music of a wedding my wife and I shot. For some reason the image quality is really poor. I tried going through idvd and I tried exporting it as a quicktime movie and burning it with toast but they both look crappy on the tv when we watch them. Please help because I need to get it out to the clients.
I have done this once before and I did have some problems but somehow got the quality we wanted. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If some slides show a lot of "jaggies" the project may have been affected by a long-standing bug in iMovie that adds jaggies to photos when you share the project with iDVD. If we grant permission for iMovie to render the images when sending the project to iDVD, it messes them up pretty badly.
If that's what happened, you'll need to re-import those images to replace the badly-rendered clips.

IMovie 9 quality problem, investigation

I'm really confused where the iMovie image problem is coming from. As with most of Apple's data files you can right click on any iMovie project to check out whats inside and strange enough it stores movies and images in full quality.
I have tried to render the same photo in iMovie 5 HD, iMovie 9, FinalCut Pro 7 and PulpMotion and only iMovie 9 displays the weird posterization in dark gradient areas. It also seems to have a problem with the colours.
So now what? iMovie 9 has fun themes, is very easy to use, great features but I can't get decent results with still photos. Other applications and versions do great export but miss features or are cumbersome to use. Anyone got any suggestions?

I never said iMovie stores what it exports in the file. I'm trying to troubleshoot so was trying to eliminate causes for the bad image quality. Seeing the imported images are still of good quality inside the iMovie project file there is no problem with the importer.
I have just done my test again, created a 1280 x 720 file from a high res photo, imported that straight into iMovie 9 and Final Cut Express. Then exported from both the projects, both with highest setting and both 1280 x 720 and no video effects. I should get the same image. I do in Final Cut Express but not in iMovie 9, there is a world of difference.
You tell me how I can avoid this?

A lot of the time when I export .dv video into a lower quality video (.mov, .mp4) there are weird lines that appear in the motion. It's hard to explain, so I will post an image of it.

This happens with ANY export to any settings, even at the highest quality and almost identical hard drive space. I've also observed this problem when using still frames in Final Cut Pro, these lines of motion (I guess you could call them?) from one frame to another when extracted from a still. I'm at a complete loss here.

Use the De-interlace filter in FCP...If your using Compressor, best bet is to de-interlace in Compressor.

HDV image quality problems on capture

Hey gang! I just got my first tape shot on a Sony Z1U, and I'm trying to caputre with the M10U deck. My problem is that the footage looks fine in the camera, and looks the same when played from the deck (via component video) to two different monitors. When I capture, the image is remarkably different - darker, with muddy colors, lousy skin tones. I'm using the HDV 1080i easy setup, and I've recalibrated my cinema display to its default (calibrated was even worse!) I've also tried using HDVxDV to capture, and iMovie to see if there was something screwy with my capture settings. Any ideas?

The computer monitor is the LAST thing you want to use to judge your image quality. It will never give you a true representation of what your footage looks like:

DV (and especially HDV) footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
HOWEVER...that is the stock answer for DV, but helps explain why your quality looks bad. Unfortunately, HDV does not allow you to view your timeline in real time like DV does. HDV, being HD, requires an HD card and monitor solution:

To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink or AJA offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed.
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire because it's Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.

Converting appleworks document into jpeg - image quality

I am createing a project with some students where we have video taped book reviews. They have then created awards for these books using Applework 6.
I have had the kids save the certificates as jpeg2000 files using the best quality.
When I drag and drop the file into my iMoive - the image quality is really fuzzy.
1. Do I need to resize this image and if so what is the optimal size for iMovie?
2. Can I do this easily using iphoto or do I need a graphic converter?

iMovie is a DV editing app and anything imported to it must either already be .dv or it will be converted to .dv file format.
Your still image file will be turned into 30 frame per second "video" and also resized to NTSC dimensions.
QuickTime Pro can open image formats and can be used to make "movies". These are not dimensions limited and look just fine on a computer. Since the image is not rendered as "video" a single image file can stay one the screen as long as you like. Hundreds of times smaller in file size, too. Some of mine:

Problem exporting mask into iMovie. Transparency problem?

Hey guys,
I'm using a technique to mask out a watermark in a video I've been editing in iMovie. I created a black box over a transparent background and exported it as a bunch of different image file formats. I drag it into iMovie 09 as a Picture in Picture, place it on top of my movie, and it works like magic. The watermark disappears! However, my video darkens. Every format seems to have this problem, and I have no idea why it would be doing this. Is it a problem with how I'm exporting from photoshop? It's almost like the black box is casting a shadow on the transparency. Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm very aware that iMovie is not the pinnacle of video editing programs. However, at this point, it's all I have access to :-)

You should go to the original video before the watermark was applied.
It is doubtful you will find any aid in this forum when it comes to removing watermarks that identify copyright holders. Most find that unethical, even if you will not be redistributing the video.
If you really want to pursue this, go to an iMovie forum. iMovie is what you need to tweak. Photoshop has done its part.

Image quality problem when Printing Booklet to PDF

Hi!
I've searched the entire web trying to find a working solution for my problem but I wasn't able to find anything...
I've created a A5 vertical page document in InDesign CS6, filled with High-Quality photographs. I now want to print it as a booklet (to a PDF file) so I can save it and print it in a professional establishment.
The problem is, when I do this, the image quality turns out terrible...
I've checked my Print Settings and I can't find anything wrong...
Setup - A4 horizontally, and Graphics - Images - Send Data - is set to All.
Is there anything else I can do/try? What can I be doing wrong?

When I export the document normally to PDF the image quality is fine, but it doesn't have the booklet layout which I need, it just exports single A5 pages one after the other. If I try to print this pdf as a booklet in Adobe Reader the same thing happens to the images, they loose quality.

Hi! Thank you for your quick and helpful answer.
There's definetly something wrong with the PDF printer properties... It was on standard default, as you said... but it still didn't work when I changed it to press quality (also tried high-quality print), changed the dpi's and other few settings on the advanced preferences
My solution was to download a free-trial of a professional pdf editor/creator (Soda PDF) and print it to that program... but, of course, this is not a long-term solution...
I'll try and see if I can find any help in changing the settings to get the best quality in printing of the adobe acrobat program.

Quicktime image quality problems in FCP

I'm trying to do a basic video tutorial on how to use a tool on my website. I captured the movie from my screen with a product called SnapZpro which saved the movie as a QuickTime movie. However when I import it into FCP to do some mixing with other graphical elements, add some transitions, edit the audio and add some other screen shots, the image quality is awful. I have rendered the file & also exported with no compression and still no luck. The original QT movie capture is crystal clear. Any ideas on how to get the original quality or other ideas on good ways to create a tutorial where a fair amount of editing needs to be done?

You can spend several productive hours using the search function. We see this topic and variations often. Try searching for SnapzPro, tutorial, screen capture, stuff like that.
We don't know what your movie settings were for your captures using SnapZ nor do we know your sequence settings within FCP. The most likely explanation is that there are some dramatic changes between the two. Your SnapZ clip is being scaled to fit the timeline and this can have a severe resolution compromise.

Idvd image quality problems??

Will the length of video on a dvd created with idvd affect the quality of the image? I have just created a dvd which is pretty packed 3.7 GB are used on the dvd. Most of the video looks great. However some sections later in the movie (which when shot at night were much darker anyway) are pretty pixelated. I have created a DVD with a main movie, chapter selections and an extras folder which contains a bunch of 3 minute clips. The only place I really see teh pixelated image problem is while viewing these 3 minute "extras" clips.
I am wondering if by creating a "packed" disk, the overall image quality was degraded. And, is it a general rule of thumb that you should not try and cram in as much video onto a disk as possible?

IDVD looks a the length of things ... technically you can put two hours total video on your dvd (this includes motion menus, slideshows, music, etc) You select Best Quality to do this
And yeh, generally a longer video will affect the quality of the DVD. In general, tho, you need the "strongest" video you can get to stand up to the MPEG2 compression
DVD Studio Pro with Compressor, gives you more encoding options and you can become adept at "fudging the numbers"
But in my opinion, with iDVD, anything longer than 90 minutes total can lead you to potential probs

JPEG Image Quality problem

Until yesterday, when saving an image as a JPEG I would click "Save As", select my folder and the Image Quality dialog box would pop up and I would then select 12/Maximum as the image quailty and hit "OK". Thereafter, every time I saved an image, Photoshop applied the same settings as the previous save i.e., 12/Maximum was pre-selected and I would just hit OK and move to my next image.
However, since yesterday Photoshop is no longer pre applying the last setting used and is defaulting to quality 8/High every time. Si everytime I save, I am now having to slide the slider to 12 which is kind of interrupting my work flow.
I have tried delete my preferences settings in the hope that this glitch would be fixed by resetting the program, but the problem persists.
Has anyone experienced this and how can I fix it?

AFAIK jpeg quality settings are sticky per file, not globally (at least inside Photoshop, but that association may not transfer between applications).
So if the files are out of a camera they probably already have a quality level assigned, and Photoshop is honoring that. Try a low setting on a test file and see what happens when you resave that. It should be the same.
And...oh, never mind. You probably know already...cumulative quality loss and so on...

Safari 7 in Mavericks-Web image quality problems?

Suddenly, my browser image quality has gone south. Web page images load, but they are very poor quality, and blocky. I have made no changes to settings, nor updates. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Workaround: the video had been embedded as

WVC200 Image Quality Problem

Hi,
I have an WVC200 internet camera connected to WAG325N ADSL router. Image quality is too poor. There are lots of different coloured dots on image. I attached current image settings and image samples. Images are taken in good light conditions. Any solution ideas?

So after two weeks I got a replacement WVC200 and I'm still not satisfy with the image quality, I'm not sure if the replacement is also bad or I'm expecting to much of the camera. Here are two sample images.
What's your opinion?
If you have any suggestion on how to improve the quality please let me know.

IMovie image quality

Hi,
at http://www.prgomet.net/iMoveIQ.png you can see what I talk about.
I shoot using Canon 5D Mk2, those are h264 40mbit mov files. When I import them iMovie makes great looking AIC encoded mov files and puts them in events. That AIC made by iMovie is great and almost like original.
BUT! when I look at it in events or on timeline it look like it has 6bit (or less) colors, also when I export it it looks as bad. I do not understand why is that so. I mean iMovie makes for itself great looking AIC file to work with, but somehow in viewing and exporting it degrades quality a lot.
On linked image you can see AIC file that is source for iMovie, original Canon source, and how that same shot looks in iMovie event/timeline and when exported.
Does anyone has similar problem?

now I see on timeline that stills (photos from iPhoto) are also very low on quality .. same problem .. like jpeg on 30% quality ..
i deleted source video file .. and iMovie still shows it on timeline .. I presume iMovie has some kind of thumbnail video .. I get the feeling that iMovie uses that thumbnails to preview, edit and export, and not AIC imported ..
what else ..
