"Protect" printer - ensure only I can print to it?

Hello!
I have an HP Deskjet 5150, attached to my PowerMac G4, which is shared so that I can print from my Powerbook from anywhere in/near my room - so that I'm not tethered to my USB cables. I'm in a dorm - and the LAN/Wireless LAN seems to cover several floors and several hundred rooms! Yep, there are at least 50 shared iTunes libraries at the moment...
Well, somebody can't seem to figure out why the research they're doing won't print to their printer - and keep printing, to my printer. They've sucked down 15 pages today, before I disconnected the printer. I've changed the queue name, but I'd still like to ensure that nobody prints to my printer - I'd rather not supply paper and ink for everyone!
After a quick search on the boards, it appears that password protection for USB printers is tricky and not really worth it. I'd like to know if there is another method - third-party apps? Scripts? Some fancy way to use IP addresses?
Like I mentioned, I only wish to have my G4 and PowerBook sharing it. If I recall, it was possible to do something like this (with the IP) under OS 9, but not under OS X.

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.

I can't find that printer on the canon eu support website (canon uses model numbers on that site, not series designations) , and canon printers are not easy to get to work well on archlinux.
However there are 2 aur packages that provide the UFRII driver :
- cndrvcups-lb (built from source)
- cndrvcups-lb-bin (uses the binaries)

Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.

Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.

At this point my suggestion is to do a full uninstall of the old print driver and an install of the most recent version print driver which you can obtain at:

How do I stop my child from erasing the "history" on mozilla? Is there a way to password protect it so only I can access it?

My teenager erased the history each time he goes on so that I don't see where he was (so he doesn't get in trouble for going to youtube when he should be doing homework). I'd like to be able to password protect the history so he can no longer erase it. Can you please advise me.

One option is to use the Public Fox add-on to password protect parts of Firefox including the option to clear recent history - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/public-fox/
The downside of using an add-on is that it is quite easy to bypass. An alternative approach is to use a third party parental control application that stores its own log of sites that are visited. If the Firefox list is cleared, the sites will still be shown in the other application. One such application is the free K9 web protection - http://www.k9webprotection.com/

Can't print from Acrobat std, can print from Reader

Hi,
One of my clients has a couple of Acrobat Standard 9 licenses (updated to 9.4.2). 1 of those computers has trouble printing to a certain printer with all pdf files, in fact, Acrobat doesn't print at all. Tried different printerdrivers, different settings, print as image,... nothing works.
Finally installed a Reader 9.2.1 (only 9 version I still have), and for some reason that one does print the exact same files that the Standard version won't.
Tried repairing, doesn't work either.
Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this issue and what might solve it?

"IF" You are using, OSX.4.11 Try locating , downloading, installing AppleJack (there currently isn't a version for Leopard or Snow Leopard). The to Run Restart holding down the Command-S keys. This put you in Single User Mode (Raw UNIX).
when a screen full of print scrolls through and your left with a Blink Cursor, Type applejack.
simply follow directions. go by the numbers follow them in order they are given.
Now items 3&4 you have to do once for your system, and once for each User Account (name you gave computer when setting up example you gave name as John Smith name for user account would be johnsmith).
Once completed (1-5) hit return then choose Reboot or Shutdown.
In your case choose r and then hit return.
when it restarts wait, a whole bunch of cache files were dumped. You may even see the "dreaded "Blue screen for a little bit, and bits and piece of the desktop will appear until completely rebuilt.
After rebuilt Try printing.
If that doesn't work. Report back and maybe someone else can come up with an idea.

Photoshop CS4 and HP printer C410 all I can print is 2 inch squares,

I can set the size to anything in photoshop but all it will print is a 2" square. Can anyone help? or heard of this problem before?

I have the same problem. Before I purchased the C410a, I had different print choices in the first screen. Now the only time I have a choice if after I select print and say done. Then a screen comes up saying what paper. It only prints in one corner of the 4x6 paper. Called HP and they were not able to help up to this point. Sent an email, and the response came back to try using the Deskjet 6500c. I could not find anything on that printer when I went to add a different printer. Very frustrating. No solution at this point. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to turn my USB printer into wireless and have tried EVERYTHING and put in HOURS of work with all different types of print servers, devices, etc.
I bought an Airport Express and loaded Bonjour into my Windows 8 machine. It detects my printer, connects to my Express but simply doesn't print! I've tried EVERYTHING with editing my ports, changing it to LPR instead of RAW, etc. but with no sucess. When I connected my MacBook to my Express, IT PRINTS with no problems!!!
I can't for the life of me figure it out and my Windows machine needs to be able to print as I'm using it for work.
Any suggestions, tips, clues as to what I'm doing wrong? Apple Care and bringing it into a store gets me nowhere. Please help! I will pay someone $50 dollars via PayPal as your reward for helping me figure this mind boggling problem out!

USB printers are a pain.. it might not work at all from windows.. that is just the reality.
USB printers are local printers that plug into your computer.. save your $50.. and the cost of the next couple of sets of ink cartridges or toners and go and buy a network printer. ie one that is designed to work in a network.
If you want to pursue this..
1. How did you name the Express.. and its wireless?
Names should all be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
2. What printer is it? If you plug it in via USB to the computer does it work?
3. Once you have it working plugged into the computer change it to print to IP of the airport express and see if that works.
You can do this without bonjour..

It is windows 7 but 8 should be much harder .. naturally MS took away the easy access to everything .. but it is still there for the most part.

I can no longer print pages while using Firefox. Print dings. I can print when in Explorer.

When I try to print articles, pages, etc. that have the print icon provided, or when I use the File/Print menu, the print options window opens but when the print command is clicked I get a ding sound and no printing. I switched back to Explorer so I could get my work done and the print functions work fine. This problem was just created this week (9/13/10) and prior has been fine.

I would have thought that by selecting printing with the black cartridge only, via the driver, that only black would be used in printing.
I am not 100% sure that this printer supports it but it may be possible to print with only the black cartridge installed. On printers where this is possible the unit works in single cartridge mode.
So to give it a try open the printer to access the cartridges and remove the colour cartridge. Now close the printer again. If the printer supports single cartridge operation you should get a message on your PC screen saying something like - Printing in reserve mode - Only the black cartridge is available for printing.
As I say, this may or may not be possible with your printer but if it works then it will definitely not be printing with colour because you have removed it.
The only other issue now is what to do with the colour cartridge when you remove it from the printer. If it is just left out exposed to the air the ink in the nozzles will dry out and the nozzles will become blocked which will result in poor print quality when the colour cartridge is re-installed into the printer. When the cartridges are in the printer and not printing they are held in a capping station that maintains the cartridges in good condition. There is a little plastic item called a print cartridge protector which you should have if you have ever purchased a No. 58 cartridge for photo printing. Normally the No. 56 print cartridge is stored in the print cartridge protector when the No. 58 cartridge is being used in the printer along with the No. 57 cartridge for printing photos. If you have a print cartridge protector from previous No. 58 cartridge use then you could store the No. 57 cartridge in it while using the printer in black only mode.

Often printing problems are a sign of corrupt preferences. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences, delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & then restart Pages.
