Protected Mode: How to enforce

How can I enforce the Protected Mode?
Especially on a "unsupported configuration" to block Reader to start without Protected Mode?

This should help http://forums.adobe.com/message/3617625#3617625

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Starting with Flash Player 11.3, a protected mode was added as a new security enhancement for Firefox 4.0 and greater on Windows Vista and higher.  This security enhancement is designed to limit the impact of attacks launched from malicious Flash content (SWF files).  For additional details on this feature, please see Inside Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox
After reviewing this FAQ, we'd appreciate if you would take a minute to let us know if it helped.  There is a link to a two question survey at the bottom of the page.
While we believe this feature is fully tested and reliable, if you encounter issues with Firefox we recommend the following troubleshooting steps.
Problem: Flash content does not appear, YouTube display errors such as "An error occurred.  Please try again later.", or Flash video will not function properly.
Solution: If RealPlayer is installed on your system, please disable the RealPlayer Browser Record plug-in.
    Launch RealPlayer
Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Preferences.
Choose Download & Recording from the left hand panel
Uncheck "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"
    Click OK and close RealPlayer
    Restart Firefox
If you are viewing this page in Firefox and Flash Player is not working, please click here for an HTML5 version of this video: YouTube HTML5 HD Link
Problem: RealPlayer is not installed, Flash Player crashes in Firefox
    Solution:
Troubleshoot Extensions and Add-Ons by launching Firefox in Safe Mode
    1. Exit Firefox
    2. Click Start > Run
    3. Type the following then press [Enter]:
         firefox.exe -p
    4. Click Continue in Safe Mode
    5. Attempt to reproduce the problem
If the problem does not occur in safe mode, please try to isolate it down to an individual plug-in.
    1. Exit Firefox
    2. Re-launch Firefox
    3. Click Firefox > Add-Ons > Extensions
    4. Click Disable on all of your extensions
    5. Attempt to reproduce the problem, while enabling each extension until you can reproduce the issue
If the issue persists in Safe-Mode, please continue with the steps below:
Some users have indicated that random crashing stops when clearing their Firefox profile.  This step will allow you to temporarily test with a clean set of Firefox preferences, without losing your preferences.
    Exit Firefox
    Click Start > Run
Type the following then press [Enter]: firefox.exe -p
    Click Create Profile
    Click Next
In the Enter new profile name dialog, type "Test"
    Click Finish
Select Test and click Start Firefox
Use Firefox as normal.  If the problem goes away, clearing your Firefox preferences, or migrating the important settings (bookmarks, etc) to a clean Profile may be a good permanent solution.
If the problem persists, switch back to your old profile by doing the following:
    Exit Firefox
    Click Start > Run
Type the following then press [enter]:firefox.exe –p
Choose your old account (typically "default")
    Click Start Firefox
Solution: Try a clean Windows profile (You must be an Administrator to complete this step.  If your user account is not an admin type, skip to the next section for instructions on reporting a bug.)  Creating a new Windows user will rule out any account-specific preferences that may be enabled on your system.
Create a user account in Vista
Create a user account in Windows 7
Use Flash Player normally.  If the problem goes away, this indicates a compatibility problem, either with software you have installed or with preferences set on your account.
    Reporting a bug:
    Please file bugs at bugbase.adobe.com.
Choose "Adobe Flash Player" as the product
Choose "Browser Integration" as the product area
Please provide as much information as possible with what you were doing before the crash and an exact URL where the crash occurred.
If available, please attach your Firefox crash logs to the bug using the Attachments field.
Show hidden files and folders. For more details, see the instructions for the operating system that you use: Vista and Windows 7.
Crash logs are located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\
Logs will be located in either the pending or submitted folder, depending on whether or not you submitted the crash report to Mozilla.
    Last resort
Finally, if these problems are blocking you from using Flash Player we recommend, as a last resort, you either revert back to Flash Player 11.2 or temporarily disable Protected Mode.  We strongly recommend that Protected Mode is manually enabled once this issue is resolved.
To revert to a previous version of Flash Player, please see this FAQ: How do I revert to a previous version of Flash Player?
To disable Protected Mode, add the following line to your mms.cfg file located in:
    Windows 32bit: C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash
    Windows 64bit: C:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash
    ProtectedMode=0
If the mms.cfg file does not exist, create one using any standard text editor (e.g.. notepad)
Depending on your operating system, you might need to first save the mms.cfg file to a writable location (such as your documents or desktop folder) and then copy the file into the destination folder using Windows Explorer.
To re-enable Protected Mode, simply remove the line from the mms.cfg file.
Hopefully this FAQ helped you.  Please let us know by taking a minute to fill out this simple survey.

  • How to make 32-bit-only add-ons work with Windows 7, Internet Explorer 11 and Enhanced Protected Mode enabled?

    Hi everybody,
in IE10 I had the chance to use 32-bit-tabs even with EPM. In IE11 my 32-bit add-ons are all marked as "incompatible".
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Regards, Don

    Hi Don,
The ”Enhanced Protected Mode ” feature of  Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 7 has been simplified and it doesn`t provide the “Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode” feature. The Enhanced Protected  Mode is based on the 64 bit process.
So that may be the reason.
Here is a link for reference of Enhanced Protected Mode :

  • How do I disable the "Protected mode is currently turned off for the Internet zone" message?

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?
Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one
    too? Thank you in advance

Ok so after facing this myself I determined "By Design" wasn't acceptable.  So I traced down the registry file that gets rid of this message for everyone.  This is especially useful for RDS (Remote Desktop Services Servers) and IE9 with Roaming
profiles and Redirected folders.  I have the full write up here:

  • How to prevent dialog box asking how to handle PDFs while Protected Mode is disabled?

    Hello,
So I must be missing a Registry Key setting somewhere or something (I hope).  We have Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.1.4.  When we install Adobe Acrobat Reader we disable Protected Mode due to some issues with it.
My problem is, when you launch Reader or try to view a PDF embedded in a web page (or anywhere else for that matter) it will pop up a dialog box asking you how to proceed.  You are given three options:
Open PDFs while Protected Mode is disabled this one time.
Always open PDFs while Protected Mode is disabled.
Never open PDFs whle Protected Mode is disabled.
I need to configure it so that option 2 is how Reader behaves.
We are a small shop, I have only 4 people on my team (excluding me).  We have over 1500 machines as public kiosks that need to get this configured when 10.1.4 is installed.  Reader is currently out of date in our deployment, apparently because of this issue holding back pushing newer versions.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.  I set it manually and looked at the registry hive for Adobe and didn't see any changes to existing keys or any new keys created so I'm not sure this is something that can be done via the Registry...

Well, this didn't come up in Google Searches initially and I'm not finding the search feature here at Adobe.com to be very useful.  Actually, I can't even seem to see one for the forums...
Anyways this seems to cover the issue: http://blogs.adobe.com/dmcmahon/2012/07/27/adobe-reader-cannot-open-protected-mode-due-to- a-problem-with-your-system-configuration/
Which helps explain why it became a problem for my deployment.  I'm suspecting that its a problem with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 needing to have an exception for AcroRd32.exe.  I hate to do it given its an infection path but we do what we must.  I will update this post once I have verified that this is what the issue is.

  • How can I browse websites without disabling FP or Protected Mode?

I have been installing the latest Flash Players on Windows 7 computers, with IE 8 and 9 for over a month with this issue.  Once our Users are logged in with just User Level accounts they may be able at first to browse websites like MSN or TV stations, but the next day or so cannot do so (Pages take forever if they waited!) unless the IE Add-on of Shockwave Player is disabled, or IE Security setting Protected Mode is unchecked (disabled).  I've tried some steps including changing the Hardware Acceleration, uninstalling and re-installing Flash Player.  I'm not finding a solution!  Your help will be appreciated!

    Hi Joe,
This is a known issue with IE and should be fixed with our latest beta release which you can download here:

Please give it a try and let us know how it works for you.

  • How do I disable Protected Mode at startup on Reader XI

Dragon NaturalySpeaking software doesn't work on FireFox in with Reader in Protected Mode.
I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint.

  • How will I know when Flash Player will run with out crashing in Protected Mode?

Firefox 15.0.1 had to disable Flash Player Protection Mode to view flash videos. I want to know how I will know when to enable Protection Mode.

It is a case of try it after upgrades and see if it works.
There will probably be celebrations if and when it is fixed ;-)
I have not noticed any Firefox staff predicting imminent fixes.
(Which reminds me I need to try something, I remembered reading about a novel solution that I have not yet tried)

  • How do you disable Enhanced Protected Mode in the Metro/Modern version of IE11?

    Hi All,
We need to try and disable Enhanced Protected Mode in the Metro/Modern version of IE11 as it's causing SSO problems with our proxy server (prompting for credentials).
I have already disabled EPM on the desktop version and SSO is now working, but only for the desktop IE.
It looks like turning of Protected Mode (for the Internet zone) resolves the issue on both the Metro and desktop IE versions but we'd obviously rather not do that!
    any ideas?
    Cheers,
    G

I have already disabled EPM on the desktop version and SSO is now working, but only for the desktop IE.
Looking at the IECompatData.xml file suggests that there is some kind of override involving EPM but that would be specified on a host basis.   Can "SSO" be expressed in terms of a set of host (or domain) names?

Don's link points to this which may clarify (a bit?) what EPMCompatMode involves

  • How are permissions set for Reader XI Protected Mode?

    Hi, all,
I've just installed Reader XI, and I immediately ran into an issue with Protected Mode "protecting" me from my workflow.  I'm trying to access a .kml file on my desktop to import some annotations into a Reader Enabled PDF file.  When I get the popup window saying that I don't have permissions to open this file, I head for the Reader security settings.  Adobe kindly provided us with a UI to select files, folders, and hosts to treat as priviledged.  I enter my desktop folder's path using the UI, and save.  I restart Reader, expecting this setting to help.  In fact, the security UI reports that  my desktop folder is priviledged, which is good.  The operation still fails, with the exact same error message.  Is this the anticipated behavior, and if so, what is the privileged file, folder, and host for?  I can't read or write files to my priviledged locations.  Is this correct?
    Thanks
    Joe White

Does it work if you change the file extension to .xml from .kml?

  • How to add two protection mode in oracle data guard

    Hi all,
We have a discussion on oracle physical data guard yesterday.....
As we all know that data guard has 3 protection mode
    1. Maximum Performance
    2. Maximum Availability (Default)
    3. Maximum Protection
Now we were discussing about is it possible to have two protection mode on same data guard simultaneously... for e.g. Maximum performance and maximum availability.
We have searched a lot but don't find any help on google.
Can any one help on this with any doc, pdf or links..
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,
you don't find anything on this because it's not possible and would make no sense even if you could do it.
Maximum Availability uses SYNC commit between primary and standby db. If you combine Max. Availabilty with Max. Performance then your db clients have to wait on commit until primary and the max. availability standby have commited. That they would not have to wait on another Max. Performance DB doesn't change anything to the client. You would only combine the disadvantages of both approaches, the wait on sync commit for max. availability and beeing not in sync with primary for the max. performance db.
The max. protection mode requires by definition that the primary db shuts down in case no standby can process the commit. If the primary is not up and running it is pointless to have another (max. availability) standby db at hand, if this max. availability db would take over the service this would violate the defintion of max. protection. No Dataloss is valued higher than db availability, having the data commited only on one db site is not allowed.
