Protected pdfs in preview
A site is creating protected pdfs. Have to use the acrobat plug in in safari, since it is using a form pdf into which values get inserted. This pdf can be opened in preview, but all the values are wrong. If the document is opened in acrobat, it display the correct values.
Using a password removal program, preview is able to display the proper values. So it would seem that preview is getting confused because of the password. On another document with a password (one required to open the file), preview couldn't display anything. After optimizing the document in acrobat, preview was able to display the correct content once the password was entered.
Don't know if this problem is still present in snow.
Serious? C'mon...do some work...
Adobe makes a reader...try their website.
Safari works great as well.

Can't enter password in protected pdf in Preview
I occasionally use Preview to save a pdf document as a jpg file (for posting a preview of a downloadable file on a website). Some of the pdfs that I am trying to do this with are password protected. I know the password (they are created in-house; they're our documents), and yet when I select the menu option in Preview to enter the password, it doesn't actually permit me to enter the password. The entry field is non editable.
Anyone else having this problem, or have a solution? Please advise. Thanks.Does the password work if you use the Adobe Reader?

Mavericks Preview Opens Password Protected PDF?
I exported a image in CS6 Illustrater as a pdf. I saved the pdf using two passwords. One password was for opening it and the second one for editng it. It was saved with any editing turned off. When I opened it in Preview on Mavericks the Preview app correctly displayed a password textfield to open it. After I entered the password it opened correctly. When I attempted a basic edit of the pdf, a simple rotatation of the image, Preview displayed a little note indicating that the original document was password protected so it made a copy of the original pdf. I was then free to edit the copy in Preview such as rotate, add txt, and so forth. I don't think this is going to make many people who distribute and sell password protected pdf files that happy. What the heck is going on here?
It looks like this issue may be limited to files that have been set to restrict the user's ability to print or edit the document (even after a password has been entered for viewing). I found that a password-protected PDF could be viewed in iBooks, but after I added the print restriction, I had the same problem you reported.

Why is the text not the visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?
Long story short:
I've created a document in Microsoft Word 2010 and saved it as PDF. With the .pdf open now in Acrobat Reader 9.4.1 I have enabled the protection over the .pdf file by only allowing Printing and saved the protected .pdf. All of these actions are made on Windows 7 machine. Now when trying to open the protected .pdf on Mac (with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Preview) the .pdf opened only shows the lines and bullets but not the text.
Why is the text not visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?
(is this bug or a "feature"?)
Note: the protected .pdf looks good on Windows 7 and it works on Mac if the .pdf has no protection.
Thanks!A. What application are you using to add the protection? Reader cannot add any file security and I don't think the PDF feature of Word will either.
B. Mac Preview has issues with PDF standards so there may be some features that you will experience issues with that have no workarounds.
C. Have you checked the file after adding security to see if all fonts are embedded? -
Viewing password protected pdf
I have. Windows Surface RT and I take classes online. My text books are pdf files that are password protected. When i go to sign in to view my textbooks the adobe reader will not let me. Any ideas on what to do?

I have a password protected PDF from a colleague which will not open in Mac OSX.
When I try to open the file I get the error message
`The file "file.pdf" could not be opened.
It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize.'
When I open the file on other operating systems (on other computers) I am prompted for the password and am then able to view the file.
This may one case where the Adobe Reader application could do a better job. You can find it here:

You'll have to pick your OS version and architecture (Intel or PPC). -
Password Protected PDF? Major Fail
Have just found to my cost that this is as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Anyone with a mac can open a pasword protected PDF, out of Illustrator, with 'Preview'.
Re-save and now open in Illustrator allowing the artwork I spent 4 hours on to be sent to another signmaker. Client said, "the other company only charged me £200". Well, that's because he used the artwork I thought I had protected.
Thanks Adobe
Thanks very much
GrangerI didn't send the client the password
I was unable to open it in Illustrator without entering the password.
I opened the document in Preview without entering the password. I then resaved it and then opened that document in Illustrator without being asked for a password.
Anyhow, I've learned a couple of lessons.
There are sign companies out there with no integrity. This is due to the fact that no training is needed to produce a product. The product may be rubbish but it is a product nevertheless.
There are clients with no integrity. I have to learn how to spot them.
All proofs/visuals must be low res screen grabs.
I'm going to invoice him for the design work. Lack of integrity can be a costly business.

Protected PDF not opening on iPad mini
Just installed latest version of adobe acrobat for ios on my ipad mini. Try opening a protected PDF. Correctly inserted file user and password. An error message appears: document access is not supported by this version of Acrobat Reader and this support. How can i manage?
You could have a setting or an app that is causing a conflict. I had a setting in General>Accessibility>Button Shapes>On that was wreaking havoc in the Apple iWorks apps. Every time I would try to access help in Pages, Numbers or Keynote, te apps would crash. Astounding when I think about it since the Settings app ... part of the iOS which is Apple engineered/designed and the iWorks apps are also Apple engineered/designed apps. Apple didn't even make sure that its own apps played nice with settings that it created in iOS.
this is Apple's take on troubleshooting third party apps - non Apple Apps.
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support
I would try closing all apps, delete OneNote, reset the iPad and download the app again.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
In order to delete an app, hold down on the app icon until all icons on the screen wiggle. Tap the X on the corner of the icon to delete it. Tap the home button and the icons will quit shaking.
Now, reset the iPad. No data is lost when you do this. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Go back to the app store and either search for the app again or find it in the purchased tab of the app store on your iPad and download it again. You will not be charged to download it again. -
DRM-protected PDF crashes Safari on iPad
DRM-protected PDF crashes Safari on iPad (iOS 5.1/9B176). After restart the document is blank. When choose Acrobat from "Open it..." list it says "The document is empty". Is there a workaround?
It looks like Safari PDF preview software failes to handle DRM protected PDF (by Adobe LiveCycle ES). I am not sure but this was working before.
Thanks.Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > Safari then tap to delete history, cookies, and data then try Safari.
* No data is lost due to a reset -
Edit multiple password-protected PDFs using Photoshop CS5 Javascript scripting.
Good Evening,
Situation: I have a huge stack of PDF files and I'm using Photoshop CS5 to slice out previews and other things automatically, using a self-built javascript. Some (100+) of these PDFs are password-protected. I have the password to these files.
Problem: Every time the script tries to open one of the protected PDFs it will open a popup, stop the whole process and wait for the user to input the password.
Question: Is there a way to add the password to the open command of the app.open(...) function? Or more simply put, can this be fully automated?
What I looked at so far: "PDFOpenOptions", "app.open(...)", the javascript reference("photoshop_cs5_javascript_ref.pdf") in general.
Basic Example code:
var f = new File("path to some password protected PDF");
var d = app.open(f); //this will trigger the password popup
doSomethingWithMyDocument(d);
d.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have access to Photoshop CS6 as well, if that somehow solves the problem.
If I'm looking at a dead-end, feel free to tell me too.It is possible to do that via Scripting.
If you are unable to create such a Script maybe you should look up the chapter »Creating data-driven graphics« in the documentation. -
Scrolling PDFs in Preview is choppy
Scrolling, even the smallest PDFs, in Preview using the trackpad (swiping a la iPad) is very choppy.
Even if I'm swiping very slowly, it pretends that I'm not moving my fingers at all, and then suddenly it jumps down half a page.
I did not have this issue with Mac OS 10.9, this issue only started in 10.10 Yosemite.Thanks...I guess I could have figured that out on my own. To my defense, however, I realized that the document I was attempting to do that to is password protected - a situation that doesn't, understandability, permit this. I tried it on an unprotected version and it worked.
Thanks again. -
Password-protected PDFs making mail blank view of messages?
Surreal problem that seems to have started about the same time as my 10.8.4 update (from 10.8.3):
Viewing the standard Mail view, with mailboxes on the left, message list for the selected mailbox in the middle, and message text in the largest pane on the right of the window; when moving through the list of messages, moving down and seeing the message texts to the right, all of a sudden, the preview pane to the right go BLANK. And I've narrowed it down to several suspect messages that came from a regular group of business contacts who send me reports as password-protected PDFs. I prepared a test PDF with Preview, encrypted, and used that to test the proposition that password-protected PDFs are what is 'breaking' the view of message contents in the right hand window, and it is clearly the problem.
After I view a message with the gray password-protected preview image showing in the preview pane, switching to another message in the message list, that next message shows a normal header but the text/body of the message shows blank. And then the next messages keep showing blank until I either: hide and unhide the main mail window OR quit and reopen mail. But double-clicking on any message in the list to open it properly in its own window shows it normally.
Rebuilding my mailboxes did not help. Rebooting did not help.
Any ideas about what the heck might be going on?I've had the same problem on 3 computers since updating them to 10.8.4
I don't think many will find this thread as most will search for threads relating to 10.8.4
It only happens to my mail after viewing a message that contains a password protected pdf. If I don't open emails that contain the pdfs mail works perfectly, but once I've clicked on a message that contains a pdf every email turns blank. Mac mail & POP accounts. I can double-click the email to have it viewable in a new window but still can't open the pdfs. I get password protected pdfs regularly for work.
They're standard drives, no partitioning.
I've tried the "sandbox" suggestion with no joy. & I've also tried removing junk filtering which is a suggestion on another thread.
I don't think I'm up to re-installing 10.8.3 so I've been using a browser for emails. -
How to read a password protected pdf on a surface pro 2?
Has anyone been able to successfully open a password protected PDF on a Surface Pro 2? The Adobe Reader app doesn't work on the surface pro 2 with protected PDFs.
Use Adobe Reader XI, the regular Adobe Reader for any Windows system.

When i print a pdf from preview it prints strange characters - it looks fine on screen
when i print a pdf from preview it prints strange characters - it looks fine on screen
You can also try opening the PDF with preview, then doing a copy and paste to TextEdit and printing from there.
Adobe makes it easier, but you do have software to accomplish this.
Only download Adobe reader from this site, to avoid "fakes/spoofs/malware" that will cause damage to your machine.

Is there a way of protecting PDF documents from printing and/or copying?
Does anybody know a way of protecting PDF documents from printing and/or copying? All this within the OS possibilities? Is there a way?
know one can buy expensive programmes like from Adobe, but I use it so little that I would like a cheaper solution. Freeware would be great, shareware also.
Any suggestion grateful received. No way to do that using the OS (although the entire pdf can be encrypted, once the password is applied the document is open for copying/printing).
However, the freeware PDFLab does allow password protection, the 'owner' pw allows full access, the 'user' pw can be restricted for printing, copying, etc:
http://www.iconus.ch/fabien/pdflab/
This can also be done with Adobe's Create PDF Online, but the above is free, and works well.
Hope this helps...
