Protected Songs

I have purchased music from MSN and would like to send it to my I-POD but it will not convert due to it being protected, can anyone help??

You should be able to burn these purchases to an audio CD, that audio CD can be used like a CD you would purchase in the store, to re-import the music into iTunes.

  • HT201272 How to convert "protected" songs

How can I convert my "protected" songs to "unprotected"?  I thought maybe re-downloading them would work, but on my purchased list, these show up as already "downloaded", so apparently that's not the answer.  I see articles on here talking about upgrading the songs using iTunes Plus, but I can't find that either. Did I miss my opportunity to do that?

    Gayle,
Well you did miss one opportunity.  For several years Apple offered to upgrade protected songs to Plus for 30 cents (US) per track, but that program ended last year.
But you still have two options:
You can subscribe to iTunes Match, and use it to upgrade your tracks as described in this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1711
You can use iTunes to burn the tracks to an audio CD, which can be used like any normal audio CD.

  • ITunes problem... Purchased protected songs wont play!!! Help!

I just purchase a Mac mini... My old MacBook has left us after years of service...Ive purchased alot of music from iTunes over the years and some of it will not play on my new Mac mini... I've authorized the Mac mini for iTunes use but still certain protected songs will not play. Before my old MacBook crashed I backed up all of my music on an external hard drive... I then uploaded the hard drive music onto my Mac mini.... I have about 11 bob Dylan albums that will not play although the are authorized.... Help pleaseeee!!!

Hi all this sounds all too familiar The only difference I noted was that mine is not playing all songs (and videos) that I previously purchased (although it did play one purchased album!! I've searched all the help files and cannot work this out. Appreciate any guidance.

  • Convert Purchased DRM-Protected Songs to DRM-Free Versions

Convert Purchased DRM-Protected Songs to DRM-Free Versions
as per iTunes / Help / Usage rights for iTunes Store purchases:
"All songs offered by the iTunes Store now come without DRM protection. These DRM-free songs, called iTunes Plus, have no usage restrictions and feature high-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding.
If you have older iTunes Store purchases that are now available as iTunes Plus downloads, you may upgrade your existing purchases. To do so, visit the iTunes Store and follow the onscreen instructions."
Looking at iTunes / Store / Purchased, which shows the list of songs that I have purchased, I do not see how I can tell if my older songs are with or without DRM protection.
How do I identify what songs have DRM protection? I want to convert any purchased music, which have DRM protection, to newer DRM-free versions.
    Thank you.

    Yank,
The upgrade program described in that document was discontinued  by Apple a few months ago.  Here are the options now:
If you have a lot of tracks to upgrade, you can do it by subscribing to iTunes Match and following the instructions by which to delete your DRM copy and download the non-DRM matched copy.  See the section "Can I upgrade my previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?" in this guide: iTunes Store: iTunes Plus Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you only have a few to upgrade, you can buy them singly.
How do I identify what songs have DRM protection?
In your library, use Songs view, and look at the "Kind" column for ones with the word "Protected."
If you do not see Kind, enable it by going to View > View Options.

  • Protected songs won't let me transfer music

i need to put music on my HTC ONE but i have protected songs. is there anything i can do?

    i have protected songs.
Upgrade them to non-DRM via iTunes Match (price US $24.99), or else burn them to audio CD and rip back to iTunes.

  • Moved songs to new computer and protected songs won't play

I have purchased songs from Apple Store long enough that I have songs purchased under an old Apple ID and my new Apple ID.  Someone has started using my old Apple ID as their own.  When I moved my iTunes library from my old hard drive where the protected songs were authorized to my new hard drive, the protected songs purchased under the old ID asks for a password for the old ID which I no longer know. How do I reset the Apple ID on my old songs to my new Apple ID?

Items purchased under an account remain permanently linked to that account (whichis why it is not a good idea to use more than one).  I don't know if it is possible to use an ID that somebody used before, but you can bet the old account is still there and is still linked ot whatever email address you used last with it. You will have to authorize the new computer using the old account to play the protected songs, or upgrade them to unprotected (will still require access to the old account).

  • Protected song used in slide show?

If I use a song bought from the iTunes store (hence protected) and use it in a slide show, burn it to disc as a movie with iMovie or iDvd will unauthorized computers playing the disc be able to play the audio track?
    thanks

Image> Resize> Image Size is the way to go. You may need to resample though. I don't recall what resampling algorithms are in v10, but in v12 'Bicubic Smoother' is recommended for enlargements.
I also have a fallback Scott Kelby (a prolific Photshop / Photoshop Elements author) tip from an early version of PSE that recommended gradual upscaling by 10% at a time to avoid 'jaggies'. It sounds weird but it often works.
Note that for screen display you don't need high pixel per inch counts. 72 or 96 are typical common ppi resolutions.

  • I have the original CDs with protected songs, how do i import?

I was trying to import from a store-bought CD. All of my other CDs work and import correctly. This one CD gives me this error message when I attempt to import:
"One or more of the songs being added are in the protected WMA format, including the song “Track01.wma”, and could not be converted. iTunes can only convert unprotected WMA songs. If you have the original CDs for these songs, you can import them using iTunes."
So my question is...If I have the original CD for these songs, how do import using iTunes? Is there a link or something in the music store?
    thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

With a protected CD, you have to first Import/rip it to the PC using Windows Media player (WMP). Sometimes you have to use the software that comes on the CD, but in this case Im sure you will use Windows Media player if iTunes is detecting the songs as in WMA format.
Once ripped onto the PC with WMP, you will use that program to burn it to CD. Now open iTUnes and set your prefered import settings by going to Edit>preferences>Advanced tab>import sub tab.
Dont set it to WAV as these files are way too big. PIck either one of the AAC settings or MP3. Personally I prefer MP3 as any device you use is likly to support MP3 before supporting AAC.
Put the burned CD in the drive and when it shows up in iTUnes, you will manually enter in all the info like artist, album and the likes. RIghtclick the CD name in the source list (Where all your playlist and things are) and hit "Get Info". Here you will enter in the artist and album for all the tracks. After that you will rightclick each track and hit get info to enter in each tracks song name.
After all that is entered, hit the import button and iTunes will import all songs on the CD with the proper names and info

  • Password protected song problem

I have over three thousand songs and about half of them won't play due to being password protected. I typed in the password to my e-mail account and it doesn't say anything but it just keeps asking me the question. Finally I decided to make a new password for the account because obviously there is somethign wrong with my old one. I made a new one and it still doesn't work. When it asked me again I typed in the new one, didn't work. Typed in the old one again, that still didn't work. For my Itunes account I have had a new email name for about two years. So to see if the password I was thinking about was the wrong one I logged into Itunes with the one email where half my songs are password protected and I logged into it fine and logged out. I have no idea why the password is not unlocking my songs. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

So...do you have purchases on more than one iTunes Store account? If so, you'll need to authorize for both of them. If authorizing isn't working, it can sometimes be caused by a missing shared folder or other issues. You might try these suggestions:

  • Protected songs no longer playing

Something quite odd has just happened: the 'protected' tracks which I bought through iTunes have stopped playing on my iPhone.
A couple of weeks ago they were fine but I noticed this week that they simply will not play. The songs play perfectly well on my MacBook and iPad (via iTunes Match)
Searching the web for a solution has not worked. So does anyo

    Hello ChidiO,
It sounds like your iTunes purchases are not playing anymore in the Music app. I would try a few things here. First close all the running apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that, sign out of your iTunes account in Settings > iTunes and App stores, and restart the phone, sign back in and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:

  • Protected Songs - Haven't changed computers, but have changed e-mail acct.

A couple of years ago I set up an account to purchase songs. Since that time I have changed my e-mail and the account I set up through iTunes at that time no loger exists according to Apple. I have sense opened a new account with a new username and password, however the songs I purchased under the old account are protected and won't play on my computer. It asks me to authorize my computer, however, there is no longer an account for the username it is giving me. What should I do so I can play the songs that I have purchased?
Thanks for any and all help

Enter the original account name and the original account password to play a song purchased under the original account/password. Even though Apple has closed the account for purchases and the like, you need to authorize your computer to play those songs with the original info they were purchased under. Those data are wired into the music files on your computer.

  • Erase Protected Songs

After de-authorizing a computer, how do you erase just the songs that belong to the de-authorized account? I realized that I have songs from an ex on my computer that she was sharing with me, but now she has appropriately decided to take me off her iTunes account. Now, I'm stuck with unplayable songs that prompt me to enter a password every time they try to play. I don't want to erase my whole library, because I have songs that I've also bought and songs that I've imported off CD.
Any ideas on how to erase just locked songs?

There's no blanket way to erase just songs from the iTunes Store other than selecting them in the Purchased playlist, but if you only have songs from her account, you can use the Purchased list or turn on the "Kind" column in the main library listing and sort by that column. Songs from the iTunes Store will shows as "protected AAC" and you can then select them all by Shift-click and delete them en masse. If you have tracks from multiple accounts and only want to delete tracks from the one account, though, then unless unless the "date added" column would help you identify them, you'll have to look at the info for each one - it will show who purchased it - and delete them individually.

  • Unable to burn certain AAC protected songs

    Hi everyone,
I am having trouble burning some of my music. I was trying to burn a playlist/make an audio cd containing protected AAC audio files. For some reason iTunes decided not burn several of the songs on the playlist. I then created a new playlist containing only those songs that didn't burn properly and tried to burn another audio cd. iTunes will not even attempt to burn these songs.
Why would iTunes burn some protected AAC audio files and not others?

Have you been able to get those tracks to burn yet?  I have the same problem - about 30 songs won't burn.  I don't even get an error message.

  • ITunes newbie... bought MPEG AAC protected songs, wont drag over to Shuffle?

I bought 3 songs from I Tunes store and all are "protected AAC". What to do...

I think what your problem is is that you have the Shuffle on automatic sync mode, that means that iTunes automatically loads songs onto your iPod and you can't do it manually. To put these songs on your Shuffle I would suggest in iTunes when your SHuffle is plugged in to go to the bottom right hand corner and click on the little iPod button. This will open up the iPod options. Then when it says auto-sync, select manual sync and you should be good to go.

  • Song tags when moving from iTunes protected song to mp3

To get music to my daughter's mp3 player after purchasing from iTunes, I've been burning them to a CD, and then reimporting them to convert. It's a hassle, but the only way I've found to get around the protection limitations. The real hassle is that the songs lose all the tags, so I have to manually go through each song and type in title, artist, etc. Am I doing something wrong or is there an easier way?

Usually iTunes keeps track of individual playlists burned to audioCDs ...
A file named "CD info.cidb" maybe corrupted - deleting this file may cure the erratic behaviour.
    Take a look at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=780773&#780773
This guy has the same issue - if deleting the menitioned file doesn't help, try the script mentioned by Michael Allbritton.
