Protecting a folder on a site containing several pdfs

Hi,
I have a folder on my web site with several pdfs that I only want people who register with my site to see. However, if someone has the the url or correctly guesses at it, they can get at the entire contents of the folder. Is there a way to protect that folder and all of its contents? What is the best way to ensure that only the selected people can see the pdfs? Will using a "shortened url capability" solve the problem?

You can use an "htaccess file" to restrict access to a particular folder, requiring a password to get in.
Many hosting services will provide a simple means to create the file from your Control Panel... check there first, it's the easiest.
Or you can write you own and set up as many users and passwords as you like:

Safari launches a window and contains several tabs

Oh boy, My Safari was perfect for the most part in the last 3 years, that is to say, if I launch Safari to browse the web, the browser would launch with a new window, fresh with default page starting at top sites. And by top sites, I mean the various web sites or pages that i have previously gone to recently most frequently. These pages are presented in miniaturized thumbnails of the whole page, or the top part of the page, and are neatly presented in 4, 8, or 12 slots tabulation for my choosing, or that my keyboard focus would already be on the address bar so I could type any other url as I wish. But until the last 1-2 updates ago I start to notice something strange, when I launch Safari, the browser doesn't go to the usual way as I described above, instead it launches a window and contains several tabs. Of which are places i have been recently, but I wouldn't call those as "top sites" by a long shot. At first I didn't realize what's happening exactly. In fact it seemed to me a bit like when my Safari reopen the tabs from my previous session. It first started with a few tabs, and then a few more each week (actually my main browser is now Chrome sorry to say, but there are several personal reasons that I still use Safari to browse certain web sites, therefore, I may not open and use Safari every day. I think last week was still just 10 tabs or so, now it's 156 tabs... my mac constipates from the sharp drain of memory and it now happens even before the browser window has started rendering. Usually, when my mac is done with beach balling, i immediately right click on the first tab I see, and select "close all other tabs", then command-w to close the last tab. Then I reopen new tab/window (cmd-n) and start my browsing all fresh. A new window launches, but only to dump the 156 tabs all over on me again. clearing web data, cookies, clearing cache, disabling all extensions, nothing seems to work so far. And the Apple Care Support would probably tell me to format the hard disk and reinstall new. I've been down that road too many times already, almost as much as I had to do the same thing when i was using windows. Ugh, even Chrome is far from perfect, that's why i come back to Safari from time to time. And I find my Firefox experience is still clunky, ugh. Have we fallen in to the Dark Ages for web browsers or something?

Delete the cache ..
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

For iWeb, I like to do only one site per domain file. I move domain files out of the Application Support folder and place them inside project or client folders, or in DropBox. Once you duplicate a domain file and begin customizing it, it will load and behave as a separate project/site.
I publish each iWeb domain/project direct to a server via FTP. Sometime I publish to a folder, then upload via FTP manually.
iWeb is a remarkable tool, especially when you work from scratch with blank tamplates

ITunes Update attempt: "The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character"

How can I install the latest version when I get this message : "The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character"? The message appears when I try to install the update and it appears when I try to uninstall the previous version. The instructions for manual uninstall says to use the Control Panel Uninstall Programs first and then "clean up" -- but I can't use the Control Panel Uninstall. I am running iTunes from an external drive. What to do?

If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now start with *step 4* from the user tip, and proceed from there.
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

How do I set up subdomains pointing to folder in your site

I am trying to determine whether it is possible to set up a series of subdomains such that each points to content within a folder in your site with the URL of pages displayed showing the subdomain without the subfolder name.
Case in question… If I have a website at say mysite.com.au with subfolders, dir01 and dir02 that each contain the pages I want displayed in relation to subdomains. I set up subdomains sub01 and sub02.
Is it possible to have my BC site working such that I can reference a page, say page01, within the subfolder to be displayed with its subdomain name as sub01.mysite.com.au/page01 rather than seeing it as mysite.com.au/dir01/page01
I know I can point the home page for the subdomain to a page within the folder but it still shows the subfolder in the url – I want the pages within the subfolder to be related to the subdomain and show/use url’s based on the subdomain without reference to the subfolder.
Is this possible and if so is this a simple or complex process to put in place?

Access protected web folder with jsp code or servlet transparently

I'm developing a web site. I want to place some of the web pages (*.swf)
a protected web folder so that no one can DIRECTLY access them through wget or browser.
However these *.swf files will be called by other jsp or servlets to display their content
in broswer. What kind of authentication mechanism should I　ｕｓｅ？ Should I use filter?
Please give me some ideas.

A Filter is perfectly applicable. But you also have to define the requirements which a request must fullfill to retrieve the contents. For example a login mechanism of which the User is been stored in the session, or an unique key provided as request parameter, or maybe the referrer, etcetera.

Securing several PDF's within a single folder

Is it possible to use a batch file to protect several PDF's, stored in a single folder, with a single Policy?

When using Acrobat 8.1 to secure documents through the Adobe Document Center, you can use the batch processing capabilities of Acrobat to secure multiple documents at the same time. The batch processing option is found under the Advanced | Document Processing | Batch Processing menu. You will need to define a new sequence for securing document and choose the Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server as the Security Method and the Policy you want to apply to the documents. Also when specifying the sequence select a source folder where all the files to be protected are located and a target folder where the secured versions of the file
dog breeds should be placed. Once you have specified the sequence you can run the sequence and this will secure all the files in the selected folder.

I've had a VHS tape converted to DVD. The DVD contains several Video_TS files, which I am not familiar with. I was able to play the original on both my iMac and TV but not copy them. I had copies made but they won't play. Why?

Most probably You've made Your copies as Data-DVDs.
If You put in a blank DVD - Your Mac want's to format it and put it on DeskTop/Finder for You to put files and document onto it. Then on Eject it Burns it - and as a Data-DVD. They will never Play on any DVD-Player.
If You want a Video-DVD then You've to go via a program that can structure Your DVD as such e.g. iDVD or Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™.
Disk Util tool - can copy a home made Video-DVD to new Video-DVD copies.
Start Disk Util tool
Insert Master DVD
select to copy it
Eject it when asked to do so
Insert Blank DVD - WHEN YOUR Mac ASKS FOR IT - Else You make a Data-DVD which You don't want.
THIS process do not work for Commercial CopyProtected DVDs - and would be illegal any way. Take Care.

Set a password for your user; create other user accounts for when other people want to use it. You can create a "guest" login which gets wiped after every logout, if that's more appropriate for them.

Can't uninstall iTunes. "The folder path "TVShows nib" contains an invalid character."

Every time I try to uninstall 10.2.5.11 on Windows 7, I get the Error: "the folder path "TVShows>nib" contains an invalid character." and the uninstall fails. Any suggestions?

Assuming here you're uninstalling as part of troubleshooting for installing a newer version of iTunes.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I click ok and then it says try again later, but later is always the same. I've tried to delete the whole thing to start from scratch but it won't let me. Something got messed up when I put the program into an external hard drive. What should I do next?

"The folder itunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside "My Music" folder.
okay ... the best place to start with that one is with the following document:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
