Protecting files/documents

is there a way to password protect files/documents?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
are instructions for Tiger, and I think are the same for Leopard.
In #9, I DESELECT the add to key chain option. This way I (or anyone else) have to type the password. CAUTION: if you forget this password there is NO way to open the disk image.
NOTE: it seems that if the disk image is open, TIME MACHINE (if you are using it) will fail. Just close the disk image and either wait until the next automatic backup, or start TIME MACHINE manually.

  • Is there any way to password protect a file/document in  Pages?

Is there anyway to password protect a file/document in  "pages" ?

To the best of my knowledge, Pages for iOS does not support passwording of documents.

I'm trying to find a way, using version 2.0.4 of iWeb on a different
pb to recover the file into the iWeb app or a way to download the site into iWeb.
There are 6 pages of images and text, and it
would be a task for me to recreate the whole thing again. I did
download the site but I don't know how or if I can get iWeb to see it and open it.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this? The link to my site:

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • Older version of text edit won't open protected file

An older version of Text Edit has replaced the copy I had. It is not opening. I have a disk mounted password protected file that holds a Text Edit document. Clicking on the document isn't working.
I tried to find a download page for the current version of Text Edit, but I didn't see one on Apple's site. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I am trying not to go back to the Genius Bar, as a stray Text Edit icon from yesterday's session (another issue) started this mess!
    Thank you!

No need to open Textedit - just select it in Finder, then press Command I (or Finder - File menu - Get Info) : a new window should open with information about the item, including the version number.

  • Is it possible to open a password protected pages document made on my mac on my iPad?

I can't find the answer anywhere in the Pages documents or googling, so I thought I'd ask here. I own Pages on my ipad, but not my imac. The ipad version won't create a password protected file, but the mac version will. Could someone who has Pages on both their mac and ipad do a quick test for me to answer this. It should be as easy as:
    1) create and save a password protected document on the mac Pages
    2) sync it through icloud to the ipad.
    3) try to open it on the ipad Pages.
    4) report back
If the answer is yes, I'll probably buy Pages for the mac, but if not, probably won't.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

  • Why can't I save my password protected file in a password protected folder?

I've just encrypted my folder which contains password protected files. I've attempted to save a new password protected file (Word document) but have had to save it to my desktop because when I try to save the file to the folder I receive a message: "Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full [which it is not] or write-protected [which it is]". Sooooooo. Does this mean I can only password protect the folder and not the files? Which is really annoying because I really do need the two levels of security. Please can someone help?

File Vault is not in Disk Utility.  It is in System Preferences/Security/FileVault.

  • Firefox allows the printing of PROTECTED files on my server. WHY?

ALL other browsers RESPECT the fact that a PDF file is password protected and does NOT allow this file to be printed. Fire Fox violates this rule and let's internet users simply by pass the protection and print the files. That really SUCKS! This should be fixed to comply with common practices. Will this be fixed?

I am not sure where this is best discussed. One of the developers mailing lists possibly.

'''You certainly will not get developer's attention on this support forum. '''
I doubt any bug filed will gain traction without prior discussion & agreement from developers. The wider subjects of copyright protection are also offtopic here but of course the problem is not just copying pdfs there is much other media that has copy protection and there are often methods of circumventing that. <br />
Even your current issue is probably not unique to Firefox. What is your site ? can you post a test file ? I imagine I will have no problem obtaining the same files with alternative browsers.
In any event there is a <s>there is</s> a currently open bug and anything filed is likely to be quickly closed as a duplicate of that. Bugs are for developers to work from and not for discussion of the bug merits.

From that comment it would appear the responsible developer is Asa Dotzler and perhaps it may be appropriate to politely enquire in one of his [http://asadotzler.com/2014/02/11/netiquette/ blogs] where this matter is being discussed
Another suggestion put your protected files behind a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paywall paywall] or at least a login for identifiable known subscribers.

  • Password protected files do not preview.

    Can someone help me?
When I upload a password protected file with restrictions on printing and editing it does not preview the file. I have not set any password for viewing or opening the file. I want to share the document but not allow for people to download it i.e. just for online viewing.
I do understand that download of the document is inevitable for a person that has some basic level of computer literacy but still want to get that done.
Is what I am trying to accomplish possible?
    Regards.
Edit: I am referring to Acrobat.com document management and sharing.

    Hi
I am having the same problem, the image does not appear in the main preview box, it is shown in the sidebar window but you cannot drag it into the main window, I have tried tiff and jpg but to not avail, the only way I can import into main window is converting the picture into eps (but it then automatically converts to a PDF format before importing), I am running 10.6.2, any ideas

  • How do I keep a Pages 09 password protected file in iCloud?

After uploading a Pages 09 password protected file from my laptop it shows as a page with the Pages 09 icon in the center (no visible text) in iCloud.  So far so good.  But once I open that doc using my iPhone, a task that as expected requieres entering the password, the protection seems to disapear and the file gets saved without the protection right in iCloud. The icon for the document changes from the Pages icon I described above to the text of the first page, just as a regular file, and if I try to open it back again entering the password is not requiered!
How do I keep the file password protected?
    Thanks.  Ale

Files stored in iCloud are stored locally as well as on some remote Apple server - just not on the desktop. You cannot keep the file on the desktop but you should be able to locate it in your Mobile Documents folder, make an alias, and put the alias on your desktop.
The Mobile Documents folder is in your Library folder (hold option while selecting the Go menu in the Finder) and your Numbers documents are located in com~apple~Numbers

  • Cannot save a password-protected file

The bank has sent me my own statement except it is password protected. I want to save this file WITHOUT password protection.  How would I do this?  I am using ADOBE X.
    Thanks

You can't do this in the free Reader. Only in Acrobat. Even in Acrobat, the bank could have protected the document in a fashion that you can't remove the security setting.

  • How to open password protected files in Numbers for iPad?

In my company, there are formats created in Excel 2010 which have password-protetected cells. Neither Numbers, nor Doccuemts to Go can't open them.
The workaround is having someone open the file in my office and re-save it in an older version, but it messes up with the formatting and it's simply not a practical solution.
Documents to Go still doesn't support Office 2010 password protected files. Numbers niether, so does anyone know of any app that can solve my problem?

Go to the App Store on your iPad and download Adobe Acrobat DC (formerly called Reader).
Open it and click on Help. Then click on Handbook. Read the section on "Open PDFs in Acrobat DC"

  • Is there a way to password protect iCloud documents?

Is There a way to password protect iCloud documents on my Mac and on iPad?

Roger not so fast. Check this out: I own a studio with about 8 staff ranging from accounts, editors, creative directors and client services. Sometimes, there's even an intern or an outside contractor present for a period of time. So far we use pages and numbers to handle all the scripts, schedules, shot lists, etc and I'd like to also store some of the admin contents (again, files generated in pages, begging for iCloud), proposals, budgets... They should at the very least, let you password protect a folder.
It's so surprising that Apple doesn't simply extend their now FANTASTIC App/iCloud/Device integration ever so slightly in the direction of the SMALL PRODUCTION HOUSE. I have thouroughly investigated everything from Studiometry to Rule to Evernote. Bloat. Bloat. And more bloat!
Apple while you're at it, offer domain name resolution so we can actually use the email service. Right now half my setup is tangled up with google apps and gmail. I shudder at the thought.
Ps I'd have separate apple accounts for each employee but nothing beats the single integration of iCal and contacts etc.

  • Password protected PDF document not opened with E7...

    Dear all,
Password protected PDF document not opened with nokia E7-00. Previously I used nokia N79, that time I was able to open Password protected PDF file such as bank email statement etc. Now I can't.
It is quite disappointing with this phone !

    hi mateys,
you may want to search under "PDF" in the Nokia Store, as some solutions such as Picsel Smart Office exist, where they do open password-protected PDF's.

  • Password protecting a document

How can I password protect a document in Pages so that only I can access it when I provide my password? Thanks!

    p,
In iWork 09, we can apply a password in the Document Inspector, Document Tab. In iWork 08, we use Disk Utility.app to create a secure folder to save our work in. So, the file itself isn't protected, but access to the folder it is stored in is very secure.
To make a secure folder, start Disk Utility and click on New Image on the Tool Bar. Name the folder, select a Volume Size that's larger than you might ever need, leave the Volume Format on the default, set the Encryption to the lower number of bits (recommended), Single Partition, Image Format > Sparse Disk Image.
Don't forget your password because the encryption is such that you'll never crack it and your work will be lost with the password. If you use a secure User Account password to access your account on the computer, you can have Keychain remember your disk image password for convenience. If you carry your work around on a flash drive, you won't have to worry about anyone reading it if you lose the drive.
