Protecting files or folders

I was wondering how to protect folders placed on the TC from other users on the network? For some reason if I create a folder on the TC it automatically gives access to all users in the permissions section. So do I create the folder on my computer give myself read write access only and then move it to the TC? I would think even then other users would have read access. This is probably a simple solution but I have never had to do it. I have tried to change the permission on the folder but it will not allow any changes. Instead of enabling disk access via disk password should I set up accounts? I appreciate any ideas.

Correct, it is easier to just do accounts from the get go. But jerry, in your case, you can revert back to the default disk access setting of no password and you will have access to the whole drive. You can then move the files you had moved before you setup accounts into your account folder (it will be the name of the account you setup for yourself). Then you can setup the disk access for accounts again and you will see your account folder has all the items you just moved.

  • Password protect files and folders Creative Cloud Files

I know this feature has been requested a number of times, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether or not the ability to password protect files and folders for sharing purposes is in the works? It appears to be a glaring omission to me, particularly as Adobe's vision for the Creative Cloud encompasses the corporate world, where security is obviously of great importance.
    Any news would be welcome.

Is there any way to password protect a folder? I'd like to password protect my iChat logs, so that iChat can still write to them and I can still access them via spotlight, however to open any of them I'd need a password. Is there a way to do it?

Create an encrypted sparse disk image with Disk Utility without saving your password in the keychain, mount the disk and copy your files or folders, then make an alias of the files or folder that are in the disk image to anywhere you prefer. When you access the alias, the disk image will mount and ask for your password.

  • Password protecting files which will be uploaded to a web site

    Hi,
In Snow Leopard I know that Disk Utility will create a disk image that can be password protected. Can that disk image be opened by a windows computer as well as a mac? Is there any other way to create a password protected file in SL? I need to upload secure audio files for clients to ultimately download (clients may not be very handy with computers). Thanks

An encrypted disk image can't be opened by anything without the password, unless you have the resources of a national security agency. There's no other way to password protect files or folders in OS X. Give it up, your paranoia is showing.

  • Auditing failed access to files and folders in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2

    Hello,
I've been trying to figure out why I cannot audit the failed access to files and folders on my server.  I'm trying to replace a unix-based NAS with a Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 solution so I can use my current audit tools (the 'nix NAS
has basically none).  I'm looking for a solution for a small remote office with 5-10 users and am looking at Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 (no props yet, but on a Buffalo appliance).  I specifically need to audit the failure of a user to access
folders and files they are not supposed to view, but on this appliance it never shows.  I have:
Enabled audit Object access for File system, File share and Detailed file share
Set the security of the top-level share to everyone full control
Used NTFS file permissions to set who can/cannot see particular folders
On those folders (and letting those permissions flow down) I've set the auditing tab to "Fail - Everyone - Full Control - This folder, subfolders and files"
On the audit log I only see "Audit Success" messages for items like "A network share object was checked to see whether client can be granted desired access (Event 5145) - but never a failure audit (because this user was not allowed access by NTFS permissions).
I've done this successfully with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/SP1 and am wondering if anybody has tried this with the Windows Storage Server version (with success of course).  My customer wants an inexpensive "appliance" and I thought this new
variant of 2008 was the ticket, but I can't if it won't provide this audit.
Any thoughts? Any of you have luck with this?  I am (due to the fact I bought this appliance out of my own pocket) using the WSS "Workgroup" flavor and am wondering if this feature has been stripped from the workgroup edition of WSS.
    TIA,
    --Jeffrey

    Hi Jeffrey,
The steps to setup Audit on a WSS system should be the same as a standard version of Windows Server. So please redo the steps listed below to see if issue still exists:
Enabling file auditing is a 2-step process.
[1] Configure "audit object access" in AD Group Policy or on the server's local GPO. This setting is located under Computer Configuration-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings-->Local Policies-->Audit Policies. Enable success/failure auditing
    for "Audit object access."
[2] Configure an audit entry on the specific folder(s) that you wish to audit. Right-click on the folder-->Properties-->Advanced. From the Auditing tab, click Add, then enter the users/groups whom you wish to audit and what actions you wish to audit
    - auditing Full Control will create an audit entry every time anyone opens/changes/closes/deletes a file, or you can just audit for Delete operations.

  • How do I stop Windows 7 from searching hidden files and folders

In XP it was simple with the intuitive Advanced Search Options.
Even if you enable "Don't show Hidden Files and Folders" in Windows 7, they still show up in the search menu.  A similar post included a suggestion by a support dude to post a question here.  I've searched for every possible solution and yet something so simple appears to be non existent.  Has Microsoft just lost its mind with omitting this feature?  Is this something that will never be solved?  Indexed or not, hidden files and folders still appear in Search.
    Thanks

what have you setup in Explorer->Organize->Folder & Search Options?
Don't show hidden and Hide: Empty, Protected, etc. all ticked
if you have at some stage indexed all those system folders, and subsquently removed those from the index scope, then you may need to rebuild the index so those results are not presented by searches?
i've assumed that you are getting things like \windows included, and this seems to be typical. perhaps because some common tools like notepad, wordpad etc reside in those folders.
have you checked out the Indexing Options?
from memory, "don't show hidden & system" really only obscures the stuff when you're browsing in explorer. the indexing engine doesn't respect that kind of setting. you'll need to get your indexing scope worked out to affect the search results presented.
I'm not concerned much with indexing, it's just amazing that there is no option to stop "Search" from searching hidden files and folders when "Don't show hidden" is checked - the way it was with XP, etc.  As I understand it whether folder is indexed or not, will not stop "SEARCH" from searching them.  It was quite simple in XP but in Windows 7 it seems it is impossible.

  • Cannot print "working with files and folders htm

When I try to print "Working with files-and-folders" from a Google search, it only prints part of it. I have changed my destination folder to no avail. Thank you or any help, Jack Menendez

What's the best method for moving all my nonsystem related stuff over to this new driveIan has provided you with the best solution, SuperDuper.
But if you have a 250 GB external, you really ought to clone your entire system,(only about 3 GB) so you have a backup.
I keep mine with a complete clone of my internal, that way it is easy to boot from the external and run utilities like Disk Utility, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior, etc. on the internal and vice versa.
If you run into a problem with say Preferences and don't know which one is the troublemaker, just trash the whole pref folder and use the good one from the clone. Font problem, same deal. And, if diaster ever strikes, you can just boot up from your external and keep right on working - fix the internal when you have time.
    That's my 2 cents anyway

  • Can't see files in folders

I have one user who cannot see any files in folders on Sharepoint. She can see the folders themselves, and any file not in a folder, but gets a 'page cannot be displayed' when she clicks on any folder.
We have granted her full access but still the problem presists. No other users have this problem.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Gordi,
If the user tries to click the folder from other computer, can he see the file in the folder?
The Limited Access permission level is designed to be combined with fine-grained permissions to give users access to a specific list, document library, item, or document, without giving them access to the entire site. For example, if you grant user access to an item in a list and they do not have access to the list itself, you will see “limited access”.
As we don’t know the permission configuration on your entire site, I would suggest you remove the user from the whole site collection and re-add her again to see if it will work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Re: Qosmio G - Hidden files and folders not showing

Hi folks, I have some hidden files and folders, which I was able to access before, and I used to click on the 'organise tab', view, Advanced Settings, show hidden files and folders, in order to hide or show the files.
Unfortunately there seems to be a problem, I just can't access my hidden files and folders any more, even when I go through this method.
someone help me out please, ASAP....
    THANKS

    Hi aaz911,
First of all it would be nice from you if you post more informations about your notebook model and operating system. This should be done always to get a detailed answer.
Anyway, I never heard about such a problem but make sure that every files will be displayed:
Start Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View and enable the following options:
-Hidden files and folders: Show hidden files and folders
-Hide protected operating system files (this should be disabled > without mark).
Furthermore can you find these missing files using Windows search?
If not I assume the files are deleted from somebody or due a virus. :(

  • How to recover hidden files and folders from memor...

When you connect your memory card to a PC or connect your phone as a mass storage device to a PC which is infected by a virus, the virus may hide all your files and folders.
The virus also changes their attributes to "hidden" and "read only" and may move all memory card content to another hidden folder, though the size of the disk looks unchanged, files are still invisible.
Steps to recover hidden files and folders:
First, change the settings in "folder options" so that we can see all hidden files and folders,
Open any folder > select organise > folder and search options, select view tab and under hidden files and folders setting, select "show hidden files, folders and drives", and uncheck the option "Hide protected operating system files" and click ok, click yes if a prompt appears for confirmation, now you should be able to see all hidden files and folders.
Second, connect your memory card to PC using a card reader or you can connect your phone as a mass storage device and note down its drive letter. (L) is the drive in my case as shown
    1. If you have autorun.info file, you can manually delete it or use tools like autorun eater(or any other you like).
If all the folders are moved inside a hidden folder, select all the items inside that folder, cut them and paste them to root directory of your memory card.
If you select properties of any folder on your memory card, the hidden attribute might be locked as shown:
To solve these issues, type cmd in the start menu, right click on it and click run as administrator.
    2. In the command prompt window, type the following:
    L: [Press Enter]
Here, I assume L as your drive letter.
    3. Type the following code to reset the attributes of all the files and folders to their default:
    Attrib *.* -r -h -s /s /d   [Press Enter]
After few seconds, all the files and folders will be reset to their normal attributes settings.
Hope you enjoyed reading the post and was helpful.

Check the formatting of the external hard drive. To do that, right click on the drive icon and select Get Info. (Or click once on the drive and type command +i ) The pane includes information about the drive format.
The drive should be formatted as Mac OS Extended. If it is not, run Disk Utility (App;ications / Utilities) and format the drive.

  • Hidden and hiding files and folders

how do I hide or unhide hidden files or folders??
I have a directory that I want to hide so that other people can't see it or get access to it. (or at least limit the people who can see it and get access to it.) How do I set it up to protect that directory and any file that goes into it?
cuz...I have two separate accounts (lets say....x and y) and I want only x and y and root to be able to have access to (e.g.) /home/directory
What command do I use to make it a "hidden file/folder"? (well..the Solaris equilvalent to a Windows hidden file or folder)

The option of changing the permisions is a better solution for what you want to do.
For completeness sake, the way to hide/unhide directories, files etc. in UNIX is by starting the name with a ".".
This does however not restrict access to the resource in any way , it just hides it from directory listings etc. Most tools/file managers etc. have an option to "show hidden files/directories" which negates its use as a security mechanism.
You will find that a lot of applications store their configuration information in directories starting with "." as is the case with netscape which has a ".netscape" directory off your home directory. It does serve the purpose of keeping it out of the way as it is not generally visible while still easily accesable.
The same holds true for WinTel "hidden" directories/files, in explorer they just show up as a lighter shade ( grayed out) but are still accessable like any other directory.

  • HIDDEN files and folders

What is the purpose of hiding files or folders in your applications or downloads folders??? This may seem to be a really dumb question but I would really appreciate some sort of understanding for hidings applications or downloads. Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi there,
This is useful to hide icons you don't want to see (e.g. icons that were pushed to your phone by your carrier but that you can't delete).  It can also be useful to hide certain applications that you don't want others to have easy access to.  For example, I have hidden the BlackBerry Protect icon to make it that much harder for someone to find and play with (or accidentally delete).  If I actually need to go into the app, I can simply unhide it while I need it, then re-hide it after.
The big reason for doing this is that it simply makes it harder for someone to delete an app on your phone or to access an app on your phone that you don't want them to have access to.  And of course, it certainly helps that you can hide icons that are pushed from your carrier.
I hope this is the info you're looking for, but if you meant something else, let us know!

  • Locking files and folders

I want to lock a few files and folders so they can't be opened without having to enter a password first. Any help would be greatly appreciated....
    Thanks,
    John

    1. Open Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    2. Go to New menu -> select new below the New Window -> Disk Image from Folder
    3. Select the folder in question you wish to password protect
    4. Below the window where you select the folder, change Compressed to Read/Write, unless you want it Read only in which case you would select Read Only
    5. Encryption select AES-128 (recommended)
That will let you password protect the folder.

  • Protecting files

I have two accounts made in my OS 10.4
One is password protected, and the other one is not, so that any of my friends or family members can use the computer without having me putting a password in every time.
Today, I had my friend using the open account posting new pictures on her facebook.
When she was making a new photo album in her facebook, the Safari gave her an option of choosing the folder/file from the computer to be posted on her facebook in a separate window. And in this little window where she choose the folder/file, she could access and see all of the files in the entire computer, including the files in my password protected account!
Is there anyway to set it up so that all the files and folders in my password protected account won't be accessed and are not visible to anybody else?
    Thank you.

The original subfolders in a user's home folder - Desktop, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, and Pictures - are normally set up with permissions such that only that user can access their contents. If you had files in Documents, for instance, a different user could see HD>Users>yourname>Documents, but shouldn't be able to see into Documents to access your files.
If your files are located somewhere else in your home folder other than in these original subfolders, they may not be protected. It's possible to change the permissions of an enclosing folder if that is the case.

  • I have been trying to import old family dads into iMovie. I receive the following message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported"

I have been trying to import old family dvd's into iMovie. I receive the following message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported" Is there a problem with the format not being recognized by Imovie? Same home dvd's work on internal dvd player. Any Ideas?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
