Providing WiFi in subways

What would an architecture for providing WiFi in subways look like?  I am specifically interested in reading about architectural options for the in-subway-train options (as opposed to in-the-station options).  Thanks!

  • I have a modem from my cable company that provides WiFi.  When I try to connect time capsule to the modem via an ethernet cable I am unable to and I also lose my wifi connection

I have a modem from my cable company that provides WiFi as well as ethernet ports for internet TV and Sonos.  But when I connect Time Capsule via an ethernet cable to the back of the modem I am unable to get it to work and I lose my wifi connection completely. I added Time Capsule to back up data and also to extend the reach of my wifi with an airport extreme hooked up by another computer.

Put the TC in bridge before you plug it in.. ie do the setup in isolation to the rest of the network..
I would also start a new wireless name on the TC so it is different to the cable router..
If you want to be exacting also set wireless channels so the cable router is set to say channel 1 and the TC set to 11 for 2.4ghz. Then plug it in.. you will have no trouble as the TC will get an ip address as part of the existing networking.. then extend the wireless using the extreme.

  • If I'm connected to my home wifi , and I make a call does it still connect to my wifi ro does it switch to my provides wifi .

If I'm connected to my home wifi , and I make a call does it still connect to my wifi or does it switch to my provides wifi .
    Thanks for helping

Your call will be made over your cell signal, not wifi, unless its facetime.

  • Using Time Capsule in a college provided WiFi environment

This fall, my daughter transferred to Barnard College from Drexel University.  Drexel provides internet in the dorms via ethernet.  Barnard is totally WiFi.  At Drexel, she plugged her Time Capsule (TIME CAPSULE 2TB (4TH GENERATION)-USA - MD032LL/A) into the ethernet jack and connected her MacBook to it wirelessly.  Now at Barnard she does not have the same setup.
I know she can connect her MB to TC with an ethernet cable, but is there a way to configure her TC and MB in this environment to use the TC wirelessly such that her MB is connected to both the TC and Barnard's WiFi internet connection?

Not directly no.. the problem is wireless cannot connect to two clients at once. (Ethernet can).
Nor can the TC at as a wireless repeater to a non-apple wireless device. That is just how apple make them.
So choices.. setup express as wireless bridge to the TC.. so it can connect by ethernet, then send a wireless signal to the MB so it can connect to both. This can work but not if the college has a login screen.. that messes things up entirely.
If they have a login screen then you have to use ethernet or you have to use a USB wireless dongle plugged into the MB to provide a second client.
Note also they may have rules about running your own wireless routers.

  • Cant set up Airport Express. Trying to create a new wifi at my apartment complex that has provided wifi. I plug the ethernet into the wall in my room and I cannot connect to the wifi.. help please

to help me set up my airport express to my public wifi at my apartment complex

I am a bit lost if you have a public wifi why are you using ethernet into the wall.. is the ethernet just for your apartment.
The Express can work as a wireless  bridge only to the public Wifi nothing else.. it cannot extend wireless.. so the express would need to plug into another router for you to get more than one single connection to the building.
Also does your public wifi have a login page . .. because that will then make life much harder.

  • My airport extreme no longer provides wifi

Earlier today I lost wifi capability on my home network.  My iPhone 4s and macbook (running Mountain Lion) cannot receive anything via wifi.  The airport utility shows that my network is functional, but mail times out on my laptop and is in a perpetual load on my iPhone.  If I turn off wifi reception on my phone, mail will download on it.  I ran a software update and installed an update to the airport utility, rebooted my modem and the airport extreme and laptop and had about two minutes' worth of wifi before things went back to the same issue as before.  The wired function of the extreme works fine.

A hard reset seems to have fixed the issue.

Apple sells AirPort base stations which provide WiFi access, but you need an ISP or to use a place with public WiFi access to connect to the Internet.

  • Can't connect to web despite full-strength connection on wifi

Alright, I've scowered the internet and read several other topics, but none of the suggestions presented there helped fix my problem, so I'm throwing this at the support discussions. Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions/advice!
My wife and I live in an apartment building that provides wifi for the entire building. It's password protected, and about every 24 hours, you'll get a splash page (I don't know if that's the proper term) where you have to scroll through the building's terms & conditions and click "I Agree" before you can continue surfing. We had absolutely no problems with this setup for 9 months, then suddenly we lost all connection in our unit about 10 days ago. Between my wife and I, we have a Macbook Pro, iMac, Windows 7 laptop, 2 iPhones, iPod touch, and iPad mini, and none of these devices could connect. Unfortunately, the router and modem for our building's connection is located in another renter's unit, so I can't just reset them whenever I want. However, we did have them try this several times, but it didn't help. I even asked them to rotate the antennas on the wifi router, to see if somehow they got bumped and our unit became a dead-spot. Unfortunately this didn't work either. I even purchased a brand-new iPad mini and it never connected, right out of the box.
If I wander the halls of our building, I am able to get online in Safari and browse the internet on both the Macbook Pro and the iOS devices. However, once I go back into my apartment, I get the message that I am no longer connected to the internet, despite having the full signal at the top of my screen. Then, for no apparent reason two days ago, our Windows 7 laptop regained connection in our unit, and has consistantly worked since then. Just today, I renewed the DHCP lease on the iMac, and it has been connected for several hours. Occasionally, the Macbook Pro will connect in our apartment until, but the connection literally lasts for about 60 seconds before it goes back into the "You're not connected to the internet" mode. I've tried renewing the DHCP lease on the Macbook Pro as well as the iOS devices, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Here's what my wifi connection page on the Macbook Pro looked like yesterday when I was in my apartment and I didn't have internet connection, despite the fact it said I was connected:
and then here's the MacBook Pro's wifi connection page looks like when I am out in the hallway and able to connect to pages on Safari:
Lastly, (I don't know if this is helpful or not) but here's the connection page on the iMac, when it is working...taken at the same time as when the Macbook Pro was connected when I was out in the hallway:
    A couple of thoughts:
Does the iMac have a larger wifi range than the other devices? It seems that in the past, I've been able to see/connect to more wifi networks on my iMac than I have on my Macbook or iOS devices. Could it just be that the Windows laptop and the iMac are able to reach our network, while the iOS devices are having a hard time for some reason? Particularly odd that all devices worked for 9 months then suddenly stopped.
I'm asking the apartment manager if they she contact our local cable company about replacing the modem and/or wireless router. Given that I've never seen these (they're in someone else's unit) I have no idea how old they are, or if they need firmware updates.
Do you think this is a problem with the wifi network (range/dead spots), the router/modem hardware, or a problem with my computer/devices?
I'd love to get all my devices connected again (seriously, they all worked for 9 months before stopping suddenly), but I'm kind of working on the MacBook Pro first, and then will try and get the other things sorted out.
    Thanks for your help!
-J- (writing from the hallway of my apartment complex!)

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Ask whoever is in charge of the router to restart it. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 3
The administrator may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Step 4
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

  • Want to have My iPod Touch to be connected to a WiFi while away From Home

While at Home I am connected to my WiFi through my computer system but when I am away from home there isn't very much WiFi Hot spots in my area except when I am in a Star bucks or in a business that says that they have "Free" WiFi. I have a few WiFi iPod Touch Apps that are able to locate Free WiFi Hot Spots but when I go and try to use them when I am away from home I am not able to use it at all.
Is there a way that I can have my iPod Touch to be set up where I can be connect to any WiFis when I am away from Home? or have my iPod Touch to be able to search for any WiFis in my area?
Note: I have a MobileMe Account and I have a email account with my local Isp which is a Pop account.

I'll add another positive review about the MiFi device and its use with a Touch. I've had this for about 2 months, and it works very well. And I'll disagree with the poster who said "get an iPhone".
The MiFi has several advantages over the iPhone -- First, it's a mobile hotspot that can provide WiFi for up to 5 devices simultaneously (the iPhone can't do that, even once AT&T enables tethering); Second, the MiFi allows use of a network other than AT&T (which many users may appreciate)...aside from Verizon, Sprint sells a version that works on its network; Finally, the price of the MiFi and its usage plan may well end up being less expensive than an iPhone.
It's not cheap, but then again, neither is an iPhone and its usage plan. I spend nearly $60/month on the expensive MiFi plan, but can switch down (and then back up) to the lower-priced $40/month plan if I don't need the full 5gb a month that the higher plan provides.
Sure, you don't get a telephone with the Touch + MiFi solution (although Skype works well if you add a microphone to your Touch), but not everyone wants/needs a phone...and for those who want primarily data/WiFi/Web, the MiFi with a Touch will give an iPhone a real run for its money.
I'll also add that the original poster may just need access to more hotspots - i.e., other than those that advertise "free" WiFi. If that's the case, she might consider something like a Boingo membership which will get her online in many places...including just about every McDonalds in the US.

  • Want to use my mac as wifi hotspot with 3G USB connection

    Howdy Folks,
I'd like to try an alternative to my local internet provider, which has now increased to $240/mo for less than 2mb/sec service. (I live in a remote place with just one provider)
The local cellular company offers 3G USB internet "sticks", and I would like to see if I can use that to tether my MacBook Pro as a hot spot.
And, better yet, is there a way to expand that to my Airport Extreme?
Or, use the USB connection on an Airport Express directly?
    Anyone know a solution(s)?
I have a small cafe, so the purpose beyond personal use, would be to provide WiFi access for up to about 6 additional users.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, thanks. I'm still confused. So I turn Wi-Fi off and I try to select "personal hotspot" under "cellular data" and I get the following message: "wifi is off - personal hotspot will only be available over Bluetooth and USB. Do you also want to enable it over wifi?" Then it gives me two choices 1) Turn on Wifi  or 2) Bluetooth and USB Only. If I choose 1 like I did today the bluebar appears but it's connected over a crappy wifi network...if I choose #2 the blue bar never appears and the ipad isn't a hotspot???

  • Does mac mini (late 2014) supports dual-band wifi sharing?

    Hello,
First of all, i'm not native speaker, so, please excuse my poor english.
I have a mac mini (late 2014) and use the wifi-sharing feature of yosemite.
(Ethernet is connected to Mac mini and other devices such as mac air are connected to Mac mini through wifi)
For wifi-sharing, channel 44 is used, and as i know, it is located on 5Ghz band.
By the way, i plan to buy a sony srs x7 bluetooth speaker which also supports airplay only on 2.4GHz wifi internet.
If i wanna connect that speaker to Mac-mini's hotspot, should i change the wifi-channel of mac-mini to 2.4GHz band? or, can mac mini provides wifi hotspot for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously?

Bluetooth is a different network than the wifi network. BT is 2.4 GHz only while wifi cn be 2.4 and/or 5 GHz.
Your BT speakers will work fine using the BT capability of the Mac

  • What is the best way to extend a Virgin wifi network in a thick walled house?

I have a Virgin Netgear wifi router in a downstairs room at home and get a relatively poor signal in adjacent rooms and none in non-adjacent rooms (i.e. at least one intervening room); it is an old (deep) victorian house with many small rooms!
If I wanted to use Airport Express as a solution, would I need to plug one AE unit into the router and then have one in an adjacent room and then another in the next adjacent room, and so on, creating a "chain" to extend the wifi signal, or would I be better off with a plug-in wifi extending solution via the electric ring mains?  For the latter option, I note that I have separate electric circuits for downstairs and upstairs plug sockets (as I believe is normal in most UK homes).
If I do go for an AE chain, I presume that teh lasta nd intervening AE units woudl provide wifi cover?
I am new to Apple and to computer technical issues (having just retired) and so no longer have access to office IT folk.
    Thanks in advance.

Apple's extend a wireless network feature works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. The "main" AirPort Express would be the "hub", so it would need to be located in a central area in the home. Other AirPorts....located at the end of separate "spokes".....could extend the wireless signal.
Each extender must communicate directly to the "hub"....not to another device at the end of another "spoke", so your idea of a "chain" to extend the wireless network signal would simply not work.
Since you have thick walls, it is also unlikely that a wireless setup....even with devices placed at optimum locations....would allow the network to perform well.
The best solution in situations like this is always to run Ethernet cabling to other routers from a main router. This way, devices can be located in the exact areas where they are needed to provide more wireless coverage.
Ethernet powerline adapters might be an option if you cannot run the Ethernet cabling.  In theory, you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
In practice, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest.  The bottom line with devices like this is that you cannot know how well.....or if.....they will work until you try them out in your home. Older wiring may not accommodate these devices.
For these reasons, you would want to understand the store's return policy to test a couple of adapters to see how well they perform at various locations around the house.
If they work well during your "tests", then you can purchase more adapters and add AirPorts or other routers to set up the network the way that you want. I am not necessarily recommending that you use Apple products. Virgin might have some solutions that would be much easier to install and configure.
Having one of the IT guys come out to survey your home and offer some suggestions...even if you have to pay a fee.....would be very wise thing to do before you proceed with any potential plan.
The IT guys may spot a potential problem.....something that you have not thought off yet.....that will help you avoid delays and heachaches in the future.

  • Don't have router. I use iphone wifi to give wifi to ipad. Can I get printer airplay to work without router?

Dont have router ( as broadband in area is less than 1 MB) my iphone provides wifi to iPad Air.
WIll airprint printer work for me

It will depend on what printer you choose.
You need an Airprinter that supports ad hock printering.  This means the printer contains a wifi router ( it limited to only printing. )
    List of supported AirPrinters.
        http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
From this list you need to find the ones that support ad hock printer.  I'd look at hp.
Disclaimer, I have not tried this out.  All is based on what I have read online.
    For example HP D110.
    HP D110 Info Page
Here is how to set up an ad hoc network form their instruction manual.
    HP D110 User's Manual
See Page 31 of User Guide...
    1. In the Control Panel, double-click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center..
    2. In the Network and Sharing Center (under Tasks on the left), select Set up a connection or network.
    3. Choose the connection option Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network, then click Next. Read the description and warnings about ad hoc networks, then click Next>.
    4. Enter details, including Network name (the SSID for your ad hoc connection), Security type, and SecurityPassphrase. If you are going to save this network connection, check Save this network. Make a note of the SSID and the Security key/ Passphrase for future reference. Click Next
    5. Continue to follow the prompts to complete setup of the ad hoc network connection.

  • Is it possible to save videos to my iphone and watch them on my ipad (while on a plane - bluetooth?) without wifi?

I have a business trip to Sydney Australia coming up in a few months (from Vancouver). I'm still new to the whole Apple experience and wondered if there is any way to sync your iPhone and iPad without wifi, allowing me to save movies to my phone yet watch on my iPad, so as to ease the 15+ hour flight? I can only store so many movies on my iPad itself and dont think it will last for the whole flight.
    Thanks!

On an airplane you must operate in AirPlane Mode...which means all radios turned off except WiFi on planes that provide WiFi service.  AirPlane Mode turns off Bluetooth.

  • MIxed Wifi and Powerline Network with Airport Express

Can anyone help set up a network using both wifi and ethernet?
I currently have a BT Home Hub ADSL router providing wifi throughout my house and 2 airport expresses to stream music from my iMac.  The problem is that the sound occasionally drops out.  I've tried most of the common fixes from the discussions but nothing seems to work reliably.  My next step is to try and use powerline adapters.  If possible I want to use the following configs simultaneously:
    1.     BT Home Hub (Broadband) to wifi throughout the house inc my iMac.
    2.     IMac to powerline adapter to powerline adapter(s) to airport express(es). I have 3 200Mbps adapters.
    Thanks in advance.

Each AirPort Express that is connected to the network using an Ethernet connection should be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located just below the row of icons
Assign a separate name to each AirPort Express
Assign a device password for each device
    Adjust Time Zone settings
Remove the check mark (if present) next to "allow setup over WAN"
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your BT wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same security setting as the BT wireless network. If settings are not exact, the network will not function correctly.
Wireless Password = Same password as the BT wireless network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the AirPort Express to restart
When all Express devices have been configured, power down the entire network....all devices...order is not important
Start the modem/hub first and let it run a few moments by itself
Start each AirPort Express one at a time about a minute apart
Sart each network device the same way until everything is powered back up
