Providing wireless to an out building using two Aironet 1232AG's. Repeater or Bridge?

I'm hoping to provide wireless access to an outlying building two using Aironet 1232AG's. My plan is to have AP-1 on the main building LAN with a directional antenna and AP-2 in the out building acting as a repeater.
Is a repeater configuration the ideal setup in this situation? If I configure a bridge instead, is it possible for AP-2 to still function as an AP and broadcast a SSID?
Also, does anyone have a 1232AG compatible antenna that they would recommend for outdoor use and a distance of ~100 yards between AP's?
Would appreciate any advice you folks have.
Nathan

I would go with "Wireless Bridge" option rather configure it as Repeater. That gives more flexibility when configuring SSID/vlan on your AP in remote building.
Make sure station role "non-root bridge wireless-clients" is supported by this AP model. Here is a few config reference when it comes to bridges.

  • Using two displays with FCE

    Hi
I wanted to see if anyone out there uses two screens when editing with FCE HD. I use a Powerbook g4, and wish to use the laptop screen for viewing editing timeline, maybe soudtrack or live type and a 2nd LCD screen to maybe see the output or toolboxes. For example, if you set up dual display mode in system prefs, and do a powerpoint show, the laptop screen shows something different (such as upcoming slides etc.) to what is output to a projector connected to the DVI port.
Is there something like this on FCE? Thanks
    Abhi
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have now got FCE 3 and answered my own question. For any others who might be interested...if you have FCE and are looking to make use of more than one display, you have two options.
One is to use the OS's inbuilt multi-display options and have the different windows (timeline, viewer, canvas etc.) on different screens, making each one bigger. Or even have livetype open on one and FCE on the other. (Though G4s seem to struggle with this.)
However, a better solution (particularly if you have an HD capable display attached) is to use FCE's Video Out feature (Tools > Video Out). This outputs your canvas in full screen on the second display. It's great to work, and watch a huge full quality version of the final video at the same time.

  • My situation is two separate buildings 100 feet apart. can time capsule provide wireless internet in both?

can time capsule provide wireless internet service between two homes 100 feet apart?

OK.. starting to get the picture..
You should have run ethernet between the two buildings not cable.
Does the cable for the second building start inside your house.. ie do you have a termination for cable or does the second building come in directly from the street.
If you have cable link between the two buildings you can buy ethernet to cable adapters.. plug one it at each end and simply extend by plugging it into the router on the main cable link.. simple and far superior to wireless.
Otherwise you need to work out what kind of budget you want to spend to do this..
You can buy professional or semi-pro stuff from companies like ubiquiti which are far superior to domestic wireless link.. or if you want to do it on the cheap figure out what is the min speed you can live with.
I can give you instructions for using a pair of old airport.. in WDS.. or new ones.. but the new ones will cost far more and no gain.. you can usually pick up the old discus ones for $10 on ebay and they work great.
But don't try to do it without a link.. ie a specific set of AP in one house plus repeater in the other. As anything you do without making a link will just fall down or become unreliable.
You must have a pair of matched items.. You want to do this with WDS.. and you want something with good range. If you want N wireless that is fine.. but buy a pair of N wireless routers that can do WDS with full WPA2 security. eg full N wireless edimax stuff is not bad. TP-Link also not bad.. but if you want to run airplay and bonjour etc.. anything apple network then stick to apple. You will find that non-apple wireless routers will often not work with apple specific protocols.. as they are just that.. non-specified.

  • Network security - using two wireless WRT54G Routers

I have lots of  ports on my router open for numerous family software applications that are all on one computer and I would like to isolate these risky activities from the rest of my network.
I recently read I could use two routers, plug one router into another,  assign each a different starting IP address (such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1). Then attach my at-risk PCs--to the router that's directly connected to my broadband modem, and all  other computers to the second router.
Internet traffic to and from the unsafe PC area would then not reach my secure subnetwork at all.
I currently use a WRT54G V5...does buying a second one and using it as described make sense? It sounds like a rather inexpensive way to add security to my network.
I assume the second router gets connected from it's internet jack to one of the port jacks on the first router? Is there anything else that would need to be changed or set in either router to make this work?
Can I please ask if u respond to try and keep your response at a level that a non expert could understand.....I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks for everyones advice!

Thanks for the quick response....it is disappointing to see that I would lose the ability to share files......I  assume this is also true for printers as well??? Do you have another solution that you think would do a better job?
Anyway I did get a rather detailed response on how to make it work and it's in a fashion that even I could understand.
I thought I would share it in case anyone else had a interest to isolate a computer.
    Thanks
With regards to your concern, the setup that you suggested does address your concern. With this setup, we are somehow creating two networks on your location. In this manner, the computer that needs the set of ports will not be part of the network of the second router thus, it will not be able to affect the other computers.
With this type of setup, we will just have to leave the current settings of the WRT54G v5 (as long as its working properly this time). All we have to configure is the second router wherein we will have to change its LAN IP Address and also, configure its wireless settings in order for the said router to provide wired and wireless connection to all computers connecting to it. Please allow me to give you the steps.
Once we have the second router available, please connect one of the computers straight to the second router using one of the four ports (Ethernet port). With the configuration, only the second router and the computer will be connected with each other.
Before setting up the second router, I suggest that we do a hard reset on the router to make sure that it is on default settings and that we have a stable connection during the setup.
Here’s how to do a reset:
    1. Locate the reset button of the router at the back panel.
    2. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds using a pen or a paper clip.
    3. Release the reset button.
    Configuring the Second Router:
    1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
    2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type 192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
    3. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
    4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
    5. Go to Wireless Tab.
    6. Change SSID (e.g. Vic or your name or last name).
    7. Change channel to 11.
    8. Hit save Settings.
    9. Click on the sub tab Wireless Security.
    10. Set the Security Mode to WEP.
Using pass phrase Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits):
    1. Type a pass phrase.
    2. Click Generate.
    3. Copy key1 on a piece of paper (10hex character).
    4. Hit Save Settings.
For using manual key entry Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits)
    1. Under Key 1 type a 10 digit character from A-F and 0-9 (e.g.: A0B3F58C9E, 0123456789, ABCDEFABCD).
    2. Hit Save Settings.
    3. Click on the Setup Tab.
    4. Change the Local IP Address to "192.168.2.1".
    5. Click “Save Settings”.
    Finishing the Connection:
    1. Shut down all computers.
    2. Unplug the power from the back of both routers.
    3. Unplug the power from the modem.
    4. Wait for 30 second.
    5. Connect the WRT54G v5 router (using its Internet Port) to the Cable Modem.
    6. Connect the WRT54G v5 (using one of the four Ethernet ports) to the second router (using its Internet/WAN port).
    7. Power up the modem.
    8. Wait for the lights to stop blinking.
    9. Power up the routers.
    10. Start up your computer.

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

There is no such option/setting on an iPhone to determine this. Whether you can view the attachment has more to do with your connection, WiFi or cellular, and the size of the attachment than anything else. There will be a paperclip indicating the message includes an attachment regardless if downloaded with the message or not. When connected to the cellular network, if an attachment is below a designated size the attachment will be downloaded automatically. If over a certain size, you must select the attached file icon in the body of the message to download the attachment. The size limit varies by carrier/provider.

  • Bridge is slow because it's only using two threads

I'm finding that Bridge (CS6) exhibits very poor performance when building 100% previews, I think the software is limited to only two threads.
If you load bridge and go into a folder with some images and then Tools->Cache->Purge you'll see that Bridge takes a long time to rebuild the previews even on a high end machine, especially if you have both "Always High Quality" and "100% Previews" selected. I think the problem is that it appears to build the previews using only two threads on the CPU, so while a 2005 dual core machine might get maxed out, a Quad Core, or 8 Thread, or even 12 Thread machine sits there mostly idle while Bridge grinds away for an hour or more.
It's easy to check this, just load up Windows Task Manager, and view the "Processes" tab and Bridge will only ever use 2 threads worth of CPU cycles, i.e. 50% on a Quad Core, and 17% on a 12 Thread high end desktop. I've seen the problem with JPG files, PSD files, and NEF files (Nikon RAW). The processing time of large Nikon D800E NEF files is very slow. After shooting 900 images I can expect the preview build time to take over an hour on a super high end machine with loads of memory, storage IO, and CPU cores and threads, all because it appears bottlenecked on software design. Meanwhile the machine is only running at roughly 20% utilization, the memory barely used, and the IO system close to idle.
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, 64GB RAM, 12 Thread Core i7 3960X at 4Ghz, two Nvidia GTX470 graphics (in SLI), a 2-way RAID-0 SSD storage array for the OS, and an 8-way RAID-0 SSD array for the photoshop work files. The hardware is clearly not the issue. Although, just to check, I confirmed the same problem exists on a simple Win8 Core i7 system, and a Core i5 laptop.
Even worse, after waiting an hour to build previews for 900 images (3 seconds each), after adding GPS data, or after making edits in Camera Raw it then needs to rebuild all the previews again, this is understandable, but super fustrating when you know it's not working as fast as it really should be.
To be clear, I'm not upset it takes 6 seconds per image per thread - there's a lot of work to do, especially with D800 files. But I'm upset that Bridge's software design only uses 2 threads, and thus limits performance to building a preview every 3 seconds, when in fact it could be working 6 times faster on a PC with 12 thread, and I find it shocking that Adobe's latest software wouldn't be optimized for anything more than a dual core CPU, wasn't quad core launched in 2006?
    Roland.
P.S. for any Adobe Tech's reading - I submitted this under case number 184020852 and there's an attached PDF in the ticket including several screenshots.

There have been many discussions in Photoshop forum about processor speed and multicores.  I know Bridge is not Photoshop but it may give you some insight as what is going on.  Photoshop has supported multithreading since CS3.  Here is a quote from Adobe Tech Note:
Photoshop generally runs faster with more processor cores, although some features take greater advantage of the additional cores than others. There is a law of diminishing returns with multiple processor cores: The more cores you use, the less you get from each additional core. Therefore, Photoshop doesn’t run four times as fast on a computer with 16 processor cores as on a computer with four cores. For most users, the increase in performance that more than six cores provides doesn't justify the increased cost.
I run embedded thumbnails (therefore 100% previews are off) as they take up less space and are the fastest to load.  I ran a simple test with Bridge CS5 (32 bit) and CS6 (64 bit) on one folder of 200 video images totaling 16 gigs, or 80 meg per file.  With folder loaded I clicked Tools/Cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  I then timed the rebuild until the arrow stopped spinning in lower left hand corner.  For CS5 the time was 35 seconds.  For CS6 the time was 72 seconds.
I then took a folder of 1147 jpg images of 660 meg (427k/image).  In CS5 it took 12 seconds to build the cache, and the same for CS6.  However, the interesting part of this is when I loaded this folder in CS6 I had never been there before so it had to build it.  THis took 80 seconds.  When I purged it an it rebuilt it took 12 seconds.  I have noticed this phenomemum before where the initial build takes 5-7 times longer than a rebuild of the cache.
I then ran the same test with the still images with 100% preview and Always High Quality.  With CS5 it took 3 min 30 seconds and with CS6 it took 5 min. 20 seconds.
So with these very SIMPLE tests I conclude that CS6 has quite a bit slower cache process than CS5.  As we have all learned with buying new products, new and improved does not always mean it is better.

  • Using two routers for the same SSID

So here's my story. I have a standard Actiontec router in my basment, connected straight to the coax outlet, and connected by LAN Ethernet to a crappy computer nobody uses. It gives off a WPA2 wifi network, let's call it MyNetwork. For the longest time it's been the only router in the house. The coax outlet is on a splitter, splitting the coax outlet into one wire that goes to the Actiontec modem/router and the other to my TV STB. Recently we installed a new coax outlet on the other side of my house and next to it we have a brand new desktop computer that we use often. It has no wifi so and we can't run an ethernet cable throughout the entire house so we got a new Actiontec modem/router from our neighbor who just moved out. It's the exact same Actiontec device.
What we want to do is make it so that both routers give off signal on the same MyNetwork we have to make it a wider reaching signal, and so that I can connect the new desktop computer to the new router with an ethernet cable. I've read so many guides and they're all so confusing and it's such a mess that I almost completely screwed over my network. it seems like the two routers are completely independent of one another, not even aware of the others' existence. The new router is definitely in range of the old one. I've logged into 192.168.1.1 on the new computer and the new router seems to think it IS the old router (or so I think). It showed me all the same devices that have connected to MyNetwork and such, but then again it's always hard to be certain exactly which device is which. After messing around I must have changed some IP address or something, but it seems that 192.168.1.1 doesn't take me to the Verizon login screen, but 192.168.2.1 does. Can I reset those IP addresses?
And of course, can somone please provide a clean, easy to follow course of action as to how to set up two routers on one network?

I suspect it might be a good idea to step back reconsider your ultimate layout.  Essentially you now have two (or if the STB is also included, three) coax drops connected to the ONT.  It seems that you desire that one of these service the STB, and the other two each service a desktop and a wireless access point.  If this is the case, continue reading.
There is no need to consider the original Actiontec router as the primary router, wireless or otherwise.  Use the new coax location to connect to the primary Actiontec router (you can use either router).  For starters, reset both routers to their factory defaults using the reset switch on the back of each device (for details, do a search).
Once the primary router has been located (or relocated) to the new coax drop, just connect the new desktop there using an Ethernet cable connected to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router.  Then set up your primary wireless network based on this router (once again, do a search on these forums for specifics on setting up a basic wireless home network).
Now use the original coax outlet where the first router was located to set up another access point.  This access point will provide Ethernet connections plus an additional wireless network (if it's still needed).  However you cannot have two wireless devices on a single home network with the same SSID (i.e., network name).  Here are details on some methods to do this:

  • My tv is in a different room than my landlord's wireless router- can I still use my Apple TV?

I just moved into a new apartment and want to start using my Apple TV, 2nd generation.  (The black one)  My landlord provides wireless and has the router at another location in my building.  Is there a way to bypass having to plug the apple tv into the router?  It's not possible to plug into the router and my tv at the same time.  Can I connect to the wireless in some other way or is there another piece of hardware I need to buy?  Thanks guys.

Apple TV works wirelessly too, so long as it gets the WiFi signal it will work.  The only issue may be signal strength and if multiple users are on the same network you may experience slow download times.

    1. Situation
OS: windows 2000 pro – English
Java version: jdk 1.5.x was already installed. (It’s not permitted to change.)
I don’t have any authorization to install any software on the PC.
But I need to use an Integration Builder.
I already knew URLs of an Integration Builder (http://<hostname>:50000/rep/start/repository.jnlp).
    2. How To Do
At this moment, an Integration Builder (XI 3.0) can be launch under jre 1.4.x environment (on windows).
    2.1 jre preparation
    I download j2re-1_4_2_10-windows-i586-p.exe from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
I installed it on my home PC and copied all files from C:\Program Files\Java\ j2re1.4.2_10\ into my USB.
2.2 Put them into the system
I pasted j2re1.4.2_10 folder from my USB into the windows 2000 pro system.
Finally, I could list up all of javaws.exe under this system.
    c:\j2re1.4.2_10\javaws\javaws.exe
    c:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_05\bin\javaws.exe

    c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\javaws.exe
2.3 Execute a Java Web Start under jre 1.4.x version
    I executed c:\j2re1.4.2_10\javaws\javaws.exe .
    2.4 Change Java Runtime Versions
Go to File-> Preferences -> Java
As you can see, it indicates 1.5 version.
    Click [FIND] button.
    Click [NEXT] button.
    Click the j2re1.4.2_10 folder.
    Click [NEXT] button.
A JRE Finder is able to find javaw.exe automatically. Or you can indicate C:\j2re1.4.2_10\bin\javaw.exe directly.
    Click [NEXT] button.
Finally, there are two Java Runtime Versions. Now you need to uncheck the Enabled column of 1.5 version and check 1.4 version.
    Click [OK] button.
Well, in the General tab, I selected None for Proxies.
    2.5 Launch an Integration Builder
In the Location field, I typed the URL of an Integration Builder jnlp.
    http://<hostname>:50000/rep/start/repository.jnlp
SAP Integration Builder comes up inside Applications area.
Select it and click [Start] button.
If you click Environment-> Integration Builder (Configuration), you can launch Integration Builder: Configuration.

I am not getting anywhere with deploying my application or

I have set up my bc4j project. It contains all my VO info,
    links, application module. (proj a)
I then have another project with DbInfo in it(has all my rowset
info), Multiple Frames, and my Applet.java file.
Actually I have an Applet.java file and a Application.java file
because I was seeing if both/either worked. Anyway they seem the
same, except for that extra window that comes up when you run the
    applet.
I follow the steps in the oracle directions (from earlier post).
And all seems ok. But at ---->
[*] Select the subdirectory under myhtml where your applet's HTML
    file
is located, and enter the directory path of the 'staging'
    directory you

[*]Select the HTML files that JDeveloper created to run your

[*]Select all of the Java source files in your project that make

I have no HTML file associated with my applet, at least that I
    know of.
So do I need to create one, or should it of been done
    automatically.
Also, I trying to figure out what will be the best way to deploy
my project. Applet or stand alone application is what my first
choices have been so far. I have read that there is some issues

little wireless cameras would not have the ability to send back to the base, even thought the base can reach it.
Now if you take regular cameras and wire them into a Cisco switch that was attached to a wireless bridge that could shine back to the base...now you might have something, but your still going to have to do a survey/path analysis to determine if it is feasible.
Coverage isnt throughput. I see one base station with 3 or 4 sectoral antennas depending on direction, pointing two several distribution bridges to bridge the gaps that go out again to the cameras...something like that. And all of it should be higher in the air than your construction.
