Proximity sensor going haywire

When one makes a call and places the phone next to the ear the proximity sensor should shut off the screen to preserve power and prevent unwanted key presses. When removed from the ear the screen should re awaken allowing one to access the phone interface.
However my iPhone 3G seems to go nuts whenever I remove the phone from my ear to finish a call. The screen goes black and I cannot terminate the connection. I have to wake up the phone with the power button and slide the slider just to get back to the homescreen.
This surely is not normal behaviour?

Think I've worked out the problem. It seems that the case is covering or partially covering the sensors located to the left of the ear piece in a different position from the original iPhone - I'm using my old iPhone case.
I think I can kind of work around it by peeling up the case in that corner when I remove from my ear but I guess it means having to buy a new case after all. So thats case, dock, car charger ... Starting to add up now

The keypad sensors are going haywire. Only Messages has this problem. The other apps with messaging like FB messenger are functioning well.
And its not just with typing; even with scrolling up or down, the sensors wont cooperate. Pfft.

    venicespent,
Boot into your Mavericks Recovery partition by hold down the command and R keys whilst booting. You'll see a screen that looks like this:
Click on the Disk Utility item to open Disk Utility. You should see your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've changed it) in the column on the left of the screen. Select your boot partition and click on the "Verify" button. Let your Mac do it's thing - if you get green text telling you that everything seems to be OK, then your disk should not be damaged. If, however, you get red text telling you that the disk needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If the disk can be repaired, you should be good to go. If the disk cannot be repaired then the drive is damaged.
But before you do anything, make certain that you have backups!!!

  • Is apple ever going to respond to proximity sensor problems?

apple has responded to the antenna problem, how about this one? i HATE my iphone becaus eof the proximity sensor problem. i hang up on calls all the time.

I had the same problem. I took it to the Apple Store. The man helping me said that the sensor was hardware. No software fix he was aware of. I demonstrated the problem to him. He brought out a store phone to compare to. He simply said "I'm sold" and he brought me a new phone immediately. He also placed mine in a special case with my name printed out on the label to be sent to Apple so that they could examine the phone and try to learn more. Indeed, I believe that they are concerned, but I also believe that they will have to have more returns before it becomes a serious issue to them. By the way, my new phone is "better" but I still occasionally "Cheek dial" or hang up on people. I have found that sliding the phone back a bit so that my ear canal is not directly over the sensor works, and I can still hear the call. Hopefully a software fix WILL resolve this, since a reset has helped some.

  • Nokia x proximity sensor functionality issues?

I'm using nokia x and found a setting (Turn on Proximity sensor) in it that states it will dim the display when attending a call .
It works as like a light sensor (automatic brightness reduction) and it seems proximity sensor is not present.
CPU z app shows a record for the proximity sensor but doesn't show any reading all the time.? Is this issue only on my device ?
    with regards,
    Pradeep V R

No.. the display doesn't go black. On a first time after restart,  proximity works for one single time and display goes black and thats's the end.Sensor stops working. No touch response. No power button wake up.It doesn't  resumes whatever i do.Only thing to get display back again is when the call ends. When i turn off the setting, light sensor seems to work and dims display, but never wen't black.
When i try CPU Z app after a restart, the proximity sensor reading shows 0cm and it never changes. Closing the app and opening it again shows null value.
I do a factory reset and it doesn't change anything.

  • Re: Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

Im sure if it is a hardware issue, all Apple would have to do is change the software. Im sure they can add something to the software that allows you to lock the buttons when on a call, or make the sleep button on top of the phone disable the proximity sensor if you hit it. Granted, it would be lame if they had to do this, but we all know they aren't going to recall the phone, so hopefully they can 100% fix it, but if not, there are other options, even if we may not like them.

    Dear Gentlemen:

  • Locking the screen with the proximity sensor

    Hi,
I'm hoping that there's a setting for this and I just missed it.
According to the manual the phone has a proximity sensor so that if you're talking on the phone and it's pressed against your face, your face won't be pushing buttons.  The manual also says that it only works while making calls.
Is there a way to enable the proximity sensor for other times, i.e. when the screen is locked?  The reason I ask is that I keep the phone in my pocket - if there's an alarm reminder (or text message), the screen temporarily unlocks, so when I reach in my pocket and get the phone (even holding it on the sides), the alarm frequently gets snoozed or silenced - and goes away before I can see it.  I had the same problem with the mechanical buttons on my N95 but was able to resolve that by just being more careful taking the phone out of my pocket.  Doesn't work in this case!
Any thoughts on this one?  It's one of very few things that really bother me about this phone.  If there was a way to use the proximity sensor to keep the touch screen locked while the phone is in my pocket, that would be a huge fix.
    Thanks!

  • Proximity sensor works just touching the phone

hi i have a problem with the proximity sensor , when i make a call i have to press the phone against my ear to close the screen.
Any fix for this please ? Im able to open the phone if needed.
    Thank you
    Danniell

The proximity sensor should activate before you touch the phone, otherwise that is not 'proximity', it is direct touch!
If you think the sensor is not deactivating the screen early enough try a genius bar appointment, they may be able to tell you if it is abnormal - it does sound less effective than my experiences with multiple iPhones.
If you have Applecare or remaining warranty there may be a replacement offer etc. You will want to backup the device before going - there is a good chance they will ask to reset the device to factory conditions. You could try that yourself if you want to help the process move faster - just test without restoring a backup, then restore the backup.

  • Proximity sensor after 4.01 update...

How are other peoples experiences after the newest update, concerning the proximity sensor? If you were already having problem with the sensor, have they improved at all?
My experiences have not been good at all thus far. Same glitches as before.
Pretty disappointing. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and see what they say. I've been putting off calling them, with the hope that this update would actually fix the issue (as stated by Jobs). Now I'm just hoping I didn't miss my window to return my phone (it's now been over 30 days). With this issue, my "phone" is truly unusable. Every other aspect of the iPhone 4 is absolutely astounding, and I love it. But the main feature of the device (the phone) is rendered broken as of right now, IMO.

Called Apple. The gentleman was very helpful and polite. Seemed very accepting of the problem and wanted to get it fixed for me. We scheduled a appointment for the Genius Bar at a Apple Retail Store. The Rep said that most likely the Genius Bar employees will find it to be defective hardware and will issue a new phone right then and there. I'm really hoping for a new phone (not refurb) without this issue.
The antenna issue I am able to "deal" with. But this proximity sensor stuff is a deal-breaker.

  • Proximity sensor reacting too close causing droppe...

I have two Nokia Lumia 800 phones and they react too close with proximity sensor causing screen to become active so when I am outdoors in brighter light calls are auto-dropped when my cheek touches the end call button on the screen. I have compared my two Nokias in Diagnostics and they react at exact same distance (around 3 cm) and I have also compared them side-by-side to another LG E900 Windows Phone in their diagnostics where it reacts 2 cm further away (around 5 cm). On the LG calls are never dropped by mistake. Would it be possible for you to change this distance in upcoming firmwares so calls are not dropped as easily?
If I am indoors in darker light or at night it is not common to see it, but during summer time and during more light it is more common I have noticed.
Workaround I have currently is to disable the screen auto on/off feature by pressing power button once after answering or calling. if you do this manually it is disabling proximity sensor screen on/off until you press the power button again.

I find it completely ludicrous that Apple can interject on this thread and say it's received too many posts and has to be shut down and a "new" thread started. Really now? Seriously? Couldn't they also simply pop in and post 'hi guys, we hear you and are working on it' ...or something to that effect? That's my main complaint really is the deafening silence. What they're basically telling us is to complain all we want, if we don't like the phone then return it for a refund ...that is if you still have your original defective phone, for all you that already swapped phones, you're beat and are stuck with our mistake for the next 2 years when you'll be upgrade eligible again. ...WOW, thanks for the statement without technically releasing one. ...I think we're all left in the dark because Apple really doesn't know what is going on with the sensor, they can't and or won't release a statement without getting the facts straight. ...but we all know one fact is straight...the sensor is dysfunctional and that alone deserves an acknowledgement. How are we to have faith in Apple to fix the issue when we're left to believe they don't think there is one.
...btw update on "my fix" ...deleting all your photos and putting the phone in your arm pit and then under your pillow is only a temporary solution, for mine sensor is on the fritz again. ...shaking my head, if only this were
    funny.

  • Proximity sensor doesn't work correctly after 4.3 update

The proximity sensor disables the screen when I place the phone near my face when in a call, that's fine.
However, it never re-enables it when I move it away. This happened prior to the 4.3 update, however I could press the home button and it would light the screen up.
That doesn't happen anymore, so I can not hang up a phone call once the screen goes off.
    This is a major defect

I have the same issue with a 2 month old Galaxy S4 and I noticed it after the last push from Verizon whihc may have been the 4.3 update. Proximity sensor won't light up the screen again when you move it away from your face.  Verizon told me to do a factory reset, Samsung told me to do a soft reset then clear the cache.  Did all and still have same problem. Had a call yesterday and person on other end did not hang up so I had no way to hand up on my end.  Am turning off the proximity senson durring calls for now but it will use up more of the battery with the screen lit more.  They need to fist it.

The proximity sensor  in my iphone 4 is not workin. What can i do?

    Hey there JLOGON,
It sounds like your proximity sensor is not sensing your face when you go to answer a call. I would try these steps to help troubleshoot the issue:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Screen won't lock or go black when answering calls
Verify mute or speaker have not been activated, just prior to placing your ear over the receiver.
While on a call hold your hand over the top third of the display, and verify that the screen is locked or goes to sleep.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

  • Proximity sensor on 5c doesn't detect face

My proximity sensor on my iPhone 5c has stopped working during phone calls. There is no case on the phone. The sensor still works because when I cover it with my finger the screen goes black, but simply bringing the phone to my ear isnt enough to turn the screen off. I've had a lot of problems hanging up on people please help!

Same issue here. Everytime I run after a while it stops tracking my mileage. It says workout stopped, click the center button to resume. Sometimes it makes the sensor work again, sometimes it doesn't.
Made sure receiver is plugged in correctly, but doesn't solve the issue

  • The Proximity sensor don't work properly of ios4

hello! ive just update to ios 4 on my 3gs, and the problem is that the Proximity sensor don't work properly, when I put the iPhone near my ear it turns off the screen, but when I move it back from my ear it doesn't turn on...
i tried to restore, and at first the problem was gone, and now it's back...
is it a bug? I'm pretty sure my sensors are fine..
    tnx!

I was having the same issue with my new iphone 4 with screen going dark when I lowered it during a call & not having access to the call or controls of the phone. I discovered the problem was the 3G case I was using on my iphone 4 (it happens to fit pretty well). When I removed the case the proximity sensor now seems to function properly. The 3G case must have been interfering with the sensor. I guess I'll be getting a new case. Hope this helps.
