Proximity Sensor Gone Wild; How to Check?

On the iPhone 4S, the proximity sensor is constantly on by default to support Siri. Turning off Raise to Speak is supposed to turn off the proximity sensor, and usually it does. But for some reason, sometimes the proximity sensor will come back on even when Raise to Speak is still off.
This is a problem because the proximity sensor being on means the difference between a 4-hour and 8-hour battery life for me. I can fix it temporarily by turn off Siri, then doing a hard reset. It always comes back on again eventually though.
On my iMac8,1, I can see if the proximity sensor is on with the iSight camera, which conveniently captures the IR signal from the sensor, so I can figure out if the sensor is causing problems and do the hard reset. On newer FaceTime HD cameras, this is no longer visible, which means I now have a problem and I don't know when it's actually manifesting itself. Is the proximity sensor a known issue? What can I use to detect if it's on? Better yet, is there a fix for the problem?

@piyush123
If you suspect that it is a damaged or defective sensor, I believe that it would require a board replacement. I do not think it is a separate part. But I would recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Proximity Sensor Doesn´t Work. How to fix it?

I´am experiencieng a problem that many other iphone users may either.
The proximity sensor doesn´t work. When i answer a phone call, the display doesn´t turn off, and everytime i keep dialing numbers, endind calls and a lot of other little things that are getting on my nerves.
It seems apple couldn´r care less for those problems we are having, and nothing has been told or done. Thats good for us to see how much apple is concerned with customers.
Anyway, is there a way to fix this annoying thing???

this could be a few reasons,
    1. try and update the device to the latest firmware via itunes, to check you on are on 4.3 go to settings>general>about and under version, if is lower than 4.3, update the device
    2. if this fails remove any cases or screen protecters (silly, i know) that may block the sensor
    3. if that fails, take to the nearest apple store, and describe your problem, they will either replace a=or repair
    hope this helps

  • How does the proximity sensor work?

How do you know if the proximity sensor is working if you have a screen protector on the phone?

You can also listen to a voicemail and put your finger to the left of the earpice.  The screen should turn off nd back on when you move your finger.

  • HELP! my emails disappeared after I modified the pop incoming and outgoing server settings in my apple mail email account. I have checked all my mailboxes--gone. How could they have disappeared? I am talking about 200 plus business emails

I have checked all my mailboxes--gone. How could they have disappeared? I am talking about 200 plus business emails. I am using Lion X.0

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

  • My proximity sensor doesn't work anymore while calling... How do I fix this?

The proximity sensor of my iphone 5S doesn't work anymore. Therefore my screen just stays on while I'm on the phone and every time my face touches the screen I pauze the conversation, or mute it, or...
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Try removing your case.  If still an issue, take it in to Apple.  You have a 1 year warranty.

  • How to tell if HP Envy really has a proximity sensor, preferably BEFORE ordering one.

Recently,  I ordered an HP Envy 17"  17Tj000.  This unit comes with Windows 8, non-touchscreen.  I made sure to order it  with backlit keyboard, and in the options section "help me choose", it says that includes a proximity sensor to turn the keyboard off when I walk away for more than a specified period of time.    I couldn't get the proximity sensor to work, if it even has one.  I downloaded the utility to control it, since it wasn't loaded on the system.   The utlity functioned, but the sensor did not.
So I called (actually chatted)  HP, and they politely showed me how to touch the backlight key.  I explained that I knew how to turn it off and on, but I wanted the proximity sensor to work, etc. etc.   After about 45 minutes, the support person said it must be a BIOS issue.  They loaded new BIOS, and that was the end of the machine.  Could not boot, could not restore old BIOS (tried hitting windows key + B), and the machine had to go back.    Great support!   Another technician I talked to later said he didn't think it really included a proximity sensor.
So...I could order it again....but is there any way to know if the system actually comes with a proximty sensor????  WHere is it located?   I  looked at a maintenance and service guide for this model, and I didn't see where it mentioned a proximity sensor at all.  Sales people swear it has one....support people (at least one person) says it does not.
    Thanks.

I don't think so. I use an HTC One from the same carrier. The HTC One is doing very fine, even though I've unlocked it, changed its cid number and installed several custom roms before coming back to the original one. My point is I've tinkered with the HTC many times. So I  don't think my call-quality issues is related to wireless carrier problems. I wonder what a highly-hyped phone it'd have been had HTC One been made by Apple. Don't get me wrong. I am still a loyal apple fan.

  • Proximity sensor failure

I've been using my Xperia Z1 for some time now, and since the latest update, I have noticed a few strange problems.
    1) the screen will suddenly go very dark, and gradually increase to maximum brightness. This happens when I'm playing Dragons - Rise of Berk, or Knights and Dragons. Don't think it happens when I play Jetpack Joyride or Crazy Hill Climb.
    2) The ear proximity sensor doesn't seem to be working when I make calls. My display is still on even though I hold the phone flat against my face during calls. Doesn't matter if it's on the right or the left side.
    3) the backlight on the screen remains on, even though I press the power button to shut off the screen. This is also another indication that a problem has occurred.
    4) I suspected that this might be due to a faulty light sensor or proximity sensor and ran a diagnostics. It shows that the ear proximity has failed.
    5) starts working properly as soon as I reboot/restart it. But if I leave the phone on standby after a period of time, the proximity sensor fails again, forcing a restart.
    6) phone occasionally gets very hot for a short period of use(under 5 minutes), and remains hot to the touch. To the point that it gets uncomfortable to have the phone in my pants pocket due to the heat.
Do note that these problems only surfaced AFTER I updated the phone to the latest firmware that was prompted on my phone update program.
Is there anything that is being worked on to have this resolved? Or, is there anything that I can do to fix it?
    Solved!

  • [BUG] iOS 6 - BATTERY DRAIN : SIRI Raise to Speak/Proximity Sensor Always On/Flashing When Screen Active

Bug: Raise to Speak sensor for Siri remains on whenever the screen is active - regardless of Siri Raise to Speak Setting (enabled or disabled).
After updating to iOS 6 (via iTunes - not OTA), I noticed that my battery was taking quite a bit of a hit.  Granted I was checking out the new features but aside from a very short call, nothing major in the way of activity.
I had also noticed that Siri sounded quite a bit different with iOS 6 (10A403) than with 5.1.1 (9B206).  Not only did the Siri Voice change but also the responses vary between the two iOS versions.
Example: What is the weather like in Alaska?
    iOS 5.1.1 response:
Here's the forecast for Juneau, Alaska through Monday
    iOS 6.0 response:
Here's the weather for Juneau, AK through Monday (note: Siri does not say "Alaska", instead Siri says 'A-Kay'
With iOS 6, Siri sounds more robotic.  After looking at speech rate settings and comparing between the two versions, I could find nothing different.  I decided to post a video and this is where the Siri bug became interesting and tied into the battery drain with iOS 6.
Remember with 5.0.1 we saw a hit on battery drain and one of the fixes was a fix to the proximity sensor (http://hottipscentral.com/could-siri-be-hurting-iphone-4s-battery-this-little-li ght-might-mean-something/).  Well, it appears this bug is back in iOS 6.  When I went to do the video, I noticed that my 4s had a flashing light near the earpiece.  It remained on continuously.  The only time it would stop flashing was when the phone was locked and the screen inactive.  As soon as I hit the lock button to bring the phone out of lock, the sensor would begin to flash again.
Give it a shot, hold up your iPhone to a webcam and see if your result is the same.
Submitting this to Apple via the feedback form.  Please do the same if you are seeing the same behavior.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I dont believe so Amy.  Phone has not sustained any damaging drops nor any liquid spills.  Was not an issue before but I figured I'd post as I believe this is a definite bug.  I neglected to mention that I have my wife's 4s (5.0.1 build) which I am using as a comparison.
Based on the issues folks are reporting with the ambient light sensor, its either the proximity or the ambient light sensor causing the drain.  I've turned auto brightness AND raise to speak both off and the sensor continues to flash as I described in my opening post.
If others can confirm, this will definitely need to be looked at by Apple and fixed.
I just found this - same behavior (posted 7/24/2012 on another forum - source link below).
Hi folks, remember the proximity sensor (always on bug) I reported here in iOS 6 Beta 1 bugs/feedback thread? It continues to happen in beta 3, I reported to Apple and the answer I got from them is that it behaves how it's intended to do
Thing is, when you turn Raise To Speak feature off, and use your webcam (no IR filter) to verify if it turned infrared proximity sensor off, results that it didn't. Since iOS 5 this bug has been present, power cycling, or doing a soft reset solves this issue but this solution does not apply in iOS 6. Don't have an idea on how hard it is on battery draining, but it makes no sense that this sensor stays on forever even when you turn this feature off. Unless it has to do with constantly display brightness adjust feature that we have noticed came with iOS 6 version. Doing some test of this feature (some of you commented about a brightness bug in earlier posts) I noticed that ambient light variations make that display brightness adjust accordingly to brighter or darker ambiences. Previous to iOS 6, the sensor samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once--each time you unlock the phone after waking it. Now in iOS 6 you can easily watch how brightness slider adjusts itself when display senses light variations. If you open Passbook app it raises brightness to full (it is supposed to act this way for easy reading of barcodes) but getting out of Passbook app makes that brightness readjusts itself responding to actual ambient light intensity (this adjusting task occurs slowly until brightness slider stops to right level).
I've checked and ambient light sensor and proximity sensor are separate and work differently but if Apple says that an always on proximity sensor in this iOS version is behaving how it is intended to do; all that I could think of is that it has to do with ambient light "sensing"??

I'm new to Mac. I have an iPhone and a Mac Mini.  My original iTunes was on a Windows computer that crashed.  So, all of my iTunes Music and Movies are gone.  How do I get the movies and music from my iPhone to the new Mac Mini?

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Emergency! Please Help. I have an iPhone 4 with all my pictures from the vacation on it and I plugged into my computer and it sync'ed to my ipod.  all of my pictures are gone.  How do I get my pictures back?

If all you did was sync your phone, and if you haven't synced again since this happened, you can restore your phone from the backup that was created at the beginning of the sync process (camera roll photos are included in the backup).  If you have synced again since this happened this backup has already been overwritten and your photos are lost.  Also, if you restored your phone from the backup of your iPod, rather than just synced, then your  photos are lost too.
If you have an intact backup that contains these photos, do the following:
Without connecting your phone, open iTunes on your computer and go to Preferences.  On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".
Connect your phone to your computer, right-click on the name of your phone when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose your most recent backup to restore from.
When complete, you can go back to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and re-enable automatic syncing.

  • My system preferences have suddenly disappeared! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

I went to my system preferences today and they are all gone except for my language and text icon! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.
