Proxy server keeps asking for authentication

My MacOS10.7.3 server coordinates a small subnet of 100 macs. To access the internet as provided by the larger organisation we must go through a proxy server. Unfortunately the proxy server keeps asking for authentication and checking the Remember This Password barely helps. Any tips would be appreciated.

Who is the provider of this email account?  It can be very hard to distinguish between a PW prompt instigated by the Incoming server vs the Outgoing server.  What are the recommended ports to use for each from this provider?

  • Keeps asking for authentication

Trying to move photos from my desktop into folders, and it keeps giving me the message "The item (photo name) can't be moved because (folder name) can't be modified." Then gives me two choies: "Authenticate" and "Cancel." I enter the password and it happens. How can I move stuff without giving my password every time? Select that folder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and give yourself write access in the Sharing & Permissions section.

What changes are you making? Some changes require admin authentication and there's no way around that.

  • Keeps asking for username password proxy server

When i start Firefox 8 at work, Firefox keeps asking for username and password. I have fild in the network settings to not use a proxyserver for: 150.0.*;12.0.*.
Now the startpage of Firefox is our ourIntranet which is: http://ourintranet (which has a ip example: 150.0.2.3
So what i want to do is: use proxy except for this ip: xxxxxxxx, because this ip is http:\\ourintranet
Now i cannot go to http:\\ourintranet because he keeps asking for password.

I'm not sure why it's not working. I think Firefox looks in the hosts file and then the configured/automatic DNS server for address resolution, in that order. To specify otherwise (for eg. a proxy for address resolution) the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.proxy.socks_remote_dns network.proxy.socks_remote_dns] in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config] has to be set to true.
You can also check in a [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles new profile]. A new profile would have the default settings and wouldn't usually have any installed extensions and would be clean. You can try then try the proxy settings.
The 150.0.2.0/24 should work (24 bits for the network with 254 addresses - http://www.subnet-calculator.com/cidr.php) unless perhaps the network is super-netted in which case you can also try the supernet prefix instead of /24.

  • How do you stop my iphone keep asking for my works proxy server name and password

how do you stop my iphone keep asking for my works proxy server name and password

Having been in IT for close to 30 years what they actually thought was, "whether you can connect your phone to our network isn't out problem, please go away".
They don't want to troubleshoot it. And, honestly, if it's your personal phone, they shouldn't have to. it's not their problem unless their boss says it is.

  • Lion PAC proxy asking for authentication reapeatedly

Hello, Can some bro help with this problem which never happens with the same PAC proxy on Snow Leopard, like title says, Lion (10.7.2) frequently pops up the dialog asking for the authentication for the proxy server.

Do not use the suggestion to unload the notification center.  That does not fix the problem.
This post provides the correct solution.
Usually a proxy authentication dialog allows the user the option to 'allow once' or 'always' etc, and to save the proxy login details to the user's login keychain.
But under both 10.8 and in particular 10.9 whenever a proxy is in use, the user gets bombarded with multiple recurrent proxy authentication dialogs without any save options and without any identifier.
Using the terminal command nettop, I discovered that the offending dialogs come from system processes, most notably syncdefaultsd.  (How to do this at the end of the post)
The problem is that syncdefaultsd is not keychain aware. It needs access to the user's proxy settings at regular intervals, but can't get them from the user's login keychain. It's proxy request dialog does not have the option to save the details to the user's keychain, and worse still does not identify syncdefaultsd as the requesting process. Even if you open your login keychain to allow any application access to your proxy, syncdefaultsd will still keep asking for your proxy details.
The solution is to ensure that you have working proxy settings saved in the *system* keychain, not just your personal login keychain.
So when you next get one of these dialogs:
    1. Note the server name that is requesting authentication, the port (usually 8080) and if it is an http or https request. Typically it will be something in the form https://someproxyserver.someorganization.com:8080
    2. See if you already have an entry for that server in your login keychain. If not, make one manually, (being sure to enter the whole thing as per the example above with the :8080 at the end). Typically that there needs to be two separate keychain entries per proxy server, one for http and a second for https, though syncdefaultsd only uses https.
    3. Once you have login keychain entries for the proxy server, double-click them and ensure that under Access all applications are allowed, and that your user name is saved.
    4. Now for the fun bit. Option-drag and drop these entries into your system keychain. Click on the system keychain, and confirm that they are there, and that all the settings are exactly right.
For good measure, do a shift-restart then a normal restart.
You should now get no more annoying dialogs for that particular proxy server. If your proxy server has more than one alias, or if you have several, then whenever you get a new unidentified dialog, repeat the above.
I discovered it using the terminal command nettop, typing into the terminal:
    nettop -m tcp
This lists all active network processes. If you quit all apps you should still see quite a few network processes. If you see syncdefaultsd, wait for it to go away, or kill it via the Activity Monitor. If you haven't done the fix as above, and you open Safari, you'll see syncdefaultsd open shortly after Safari, and the annoying dialog immediately appears. After the fix is implemented, the dialogs don't appear when syncdefaultsd tries to start up.
Hope this helps someone, and that Apple fixes it in 10.9.1
    Cheers
    Chris.

  • HP Officejet pro 8500 won't print and keeps asking for a proxy setting. Help.

HP Officejet pro 8500 won't print and keeps asking for a proxy setting. Help.

    Hi,
Can you confirm that you have an Officejet 8500a or Officejet 8500? On the 8500a model, you can set the networks proxy address and port setting from the front panel of the printer (setup>Webservices setup>proxy). If you are unsure what your proxy settings are you'll need to contact your network admin. If your network uses a proxy users name and password for all devices, you need to enter this information along with the proxy address and port in the printers embedded web server. Type the products IP address into an internet brownser window (printer must be connected to the same network as PC). Select the network tab, and than look for the proxy settings option. Enter in the information and click apply. Once the networks proxy information has been correctly inputed into the embedded web server, try printing again. If unsuccessfully, you might try reinstalling the printer software after uninstalling it. Hope this helps!

  • Safari keeps asking for Keychain Access

Everytime I use Safari after some time it asks for Keychain access. I disabled the autofill forms feature already, but it does not stop asking. Does anybody know how to keep Safari from doing this without disabling the password protection of my keychain?
Honestly said, this erraneous behaviour keeps me from using Safari as Firefox does not make such strange attempts to use Keychain.

I didn't think before reading this discussion to be related, but now I tend to believe it may be. I've recently started using Papers.app and to get access to some publications under institutional subscription I have to configure both Papers.app and Safari to be authenticated connecting to Internet through my institution's proxy. The problem is that now the keychain access manager keeps asking authorization every now and then what really has become a heavy nuisance, not only occurring while a keep Safari open, but also while using any other application which try to connect to the Internet such as iTunes or Fission.app. Before I started using Papers.app I had devoted one browser to download articles nder subscription in order to limit such nuisance to the time I was browsing them. However, using Papers.app I've been forced to configure Safari to that purposes, reproducing the annoying effects every time I open any application which are connecting to the Internet. I posted a message in the Papers.app but nobody has replied so far. I thought of changing the browser used by Papers.app would help, unfortunately, I couldn't find any way to get so. Now that it seems there is a way to prevent the system from asking for keychain access, it may fix the problem. This is the message I posted in Papers' Support Forum. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestion:
Can Papers.app use a different browser other than Safari to get authentication from my institution's proxy?
I am at the University of Barcelona (UB), Spain, we also have an automatic proxy-cache configuration URL (like johnraekwon at the U of Manchester)
    http://www.bib.ub.edu/pac/proxy.pac
Every time I open the browser I've configured to connect through your University proxy, I get a drop down menu to authenticate with and then I proceed to the URL I head to, only now with UB credentials. More or less like johnraekwon has to do.
Unfortunately this aunthentication doesn't last for long, you are often requested to authenticate again and again. This nuisance made me decide to devote a browser different from the default browser to download articles, and it's being working rather satifactorily while I only used that browser to download papers from the Internet.
Now that I tried configuring Papers.app to download those articles which requiring subscription I've found that it only works as long as Safari is configured in the same way, that is, it has to authenticated by the proxy to get access to the Internet. I wouldn't mind using Safari exclusively to browse papers. The problem is that most other applications are also using Safari as default browser and it doesn't seem it can be changed, among them iTunes, which I usually open to download podcasts. Since I've configured Safari to get access through my institution's proxy, it keeps asking me to authenticate, and halting every task in process by doing so.
For most purposes I don't need to get authorized access, so I wish my default browser not being configured in such a painful manner.
I'd like to know whether I can change some of Papers.app options to replace Safari as default browser by, I say, Firefox, therefore limiting those repetitive authentications to just the time I'm browsing papers. It let Safari idle to be configured as a default browser to smoothly work for other purposes such as iTunes.
Thanks for the interest. Any idea will be welcomed.

One more time, iCloud mail accounts are .me, .mac and .icloud. New ones are only .icloud.
iCloud mail is a standard Imap account that can be used with any mail client in existence. But You are talking about the ability to automatically setup an iCloud account in mail, which did not exist until 10.7.2.
You can use password or token authentification with iCloud mail (in Mail) it is your choice.
Set the account manually, set it as Imap, use imap.mail.me.com (no P number) for the incoming email and smtp.mail.me.com as the outgoing server.
The full settings (ports and security) are here. Use them and it will work, regardless of domain (mac, me and icloud addresses all use the same settings.
