Proxy settings at work

I've searched for an answer but I can't seem to come up with one on this topic. My problem is at work when I start iTunes, I get asked for my proxy user name and password a significant number of times. So many times that it's not worth trying to access the music store so I have to cancel out. Normally when I start Safari I might get asked once, then everything works fine while I'm using Safari. iTunes seems to be where the biggest issue is. This used to work fine but a few updates ago I started to have this problem. A friend of mine is still on an older version of OS X and does not have this issue at work. Maybe an OS X issue? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I spent 2 hrs this morning trying to get this working. Nothing worked but here's an outline of what i DID try...
1) Upgraded to 6.0.3, like you said, this didn't work for me either.
2) Removed Library->Preferences content for iTunes and basically removed all iTunes related files. Ran iTunes which opened like a first install, still didn't work.
3) Tried running the software under a newly created user account. This did not work. Also this new user account used a different username/password for the proxy, so there's no way it is a problem with proxy authentication, Safari works.
4) I removed all package install receipts from /Library/Receipts for iTunes (iTunesX.pkg, etc) and after each time installed a different version of iTunes.
I tried 4.7.1 - 6.0.3 and all exhibited the same problem of deleting my keychain entry for the proxy server.
Summary
I believe this is a problem with the operating system itself. This happened with 10.4.5 and 10.4.4 and I don't have a previous version to test. It may be something iTunes 6 did to the OS, I'm not sure, but Windows is looking better and better to me every moment.

  • Windows - Use system proxy settings not working as expected

    Hi everyone,
I have a bit of an issue that I could use some help with. We currently have remote users that utilize an SSTP VPN connection to access our internal network. Once connected, those users are required to use an internal proxy server to connect to the Internet. The proxy server is Microsoft's TMG and utilized domain authentication.
On our remote Windows clients we have their Internet Options configured to utilize a proxy as follows:
Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings -> No proxy configured at all
Internet Options -> Connections -> Highlight SSTP Connection -> Settings
Use a proxy server for this connection -> IP/Port of Proxy Server
Firefox and Chrome are both configured to use system proxy settings.
Here is my process to demonstrate the issues:
    Remote client workstation is rebooted.
With the above configuration just after a reboot, a remote user that is not connected to the VPN can browse the Internet with Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. None of the browsers prompt for credentials.
A remote VPN connection is then established.
FF is opened and HTTP connections utilize the proxy server. However, HTTPS connections do not use the proxy server, but instead attempt to use the default gateway. FF does not prompt for credentials. FF is closed.
Chrome is opened and can access both HTTP and HTTPS sites without issue. No credential prompt. Chrome is closed.
IE is opened and can access both HTTP and HTTPS sites without issue. No credential prompt. IE is closed.
    Here's where it gets weirder...
FF is then reopened. The VPN connection is still up. FF will prompt for credentials. Domain credentials are supplied and FF can now utilize the proxy for both HTTP and HTTPS connections. FF is closed.
    VPN is disconnected.
FF is opened and cannot access the Internet as it is still trying to use the proxy server. FF is closed.
IE is opened and can access the Internet. IE is closed.
Chrome is opened and can access the Internet. Chrome is closed.
FF is reopened and can now access the Internet. FF is closed.
In summary, in the above scenario FF acts in an unexpected manner with regards to proxy usage when "use system proxy settings" is applied. However, Firefox begins acting as expected after IE is opened and closed. For example, connect to VPN, open IE, close IE, open FF, and everything works accordingly. Disconnect the VPN, open IE, close IE, open FF and everything works as expected.
Any insight you can provide would be appreciated as it is affecting our FF users and the sooner we can achieve resolution the better. As a note, we've also worked through this issue with WPAD and proxy auto-detect. I've intentionally removed these from the equation to simplify troubleshooting.
    Thanks

Quick update. Added to a previously filed bug. Looks like it's assigned now so maybe we'll see a fix for this soon.

  • System Proxy Settings only work as root

Using Firefox 10.1 on Suse Linux Enterprise Edition 11 SP2
Setting the System Proxy settings to our Proxy and using Firefox with "using System Proxy Settings" works as root user. The Authentication Prompt for Authentication Pops up and after entering the credentials FF works.
The very same Settings do not work as non-root User. Not even the Authentication Prompt for Proxy Authentication pops up.
All Proxy Settings are available too both users (checked Variables exported in Shell).
    Any Pointers appreciated.

Yes, entering the Proxy settings manually does work. Even the automatic configuration using the proxy.pac works. Just the "Use System Settings" part does not.

  • "Use system proxy settings" Not working on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

When I change the network location or when I select "Use system proxy settings" on the connetion configuration dialog.
Firefox is not using the proxy defined on the loction set on Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
I usualy change from work to home, at work I've a proxy and at home I don't, and it's a bit annoying to have to change the proxy twice a day. So I tryed this feature, but It's not working for me.
I've tryed also with Firefox 3.6 (I think) and didn't work either.

I run it from eclipse, and on debug mode i checked the value of
    java.library.path, and it was ok.
Any way, how can i do what you suggested on mac? It's just a command line argument, but there's no reason to add it if your
java.library.path is ok. One of its componenents must be a directory where
your shared lib is stored, that's all. BTW, the Mac is unix based isn't it?
Shouldn't it be an .so file then? (just a wild guess)
    kind regards,
    Jos

  • [Solved]Gnome 3 global proxy settings not working

    Hi
My laptop runs Arch and I use it at a hostel and University. Both have different proxy settings and I had configured it by using a script (if one can call it that) in {/etc/profile.d/} that exported the correct settings. I had to edit (comment/uncomment) my setting every time I mover my laptop.
I need the setting globally for Chromium to pick it up. Chromium until recently had a problem when accessing the Gnome 3 network (proxy) settings. A new update seem to have fixed this but the problem of picking up the setting remains.
I started up a terminal to see how that global proxy setting in Gnome 3 were shown and found that only the following were set
    https_proxy
    all_proxy
    ftp_proxy
The main one that I need {http_proxy} was not set, even thought I defined it. I think this is an issue with Gnome 3 and was not sure where I should report it. Any solutions will be much appreciated.

I've had issues lately with Gnome 3 and proxy settings. For example, as of today (or sometime this weekend) Firefox is not obeying the system proxy settings (System Settings -> Network -> Proxy). Even better was that today I found that the system proxy settings had "magically" reset to proxy.company.com:8080 (or whatever their default setting is). If I manually set Firefox's proxy settings, it connects just fine. All terminal applications that I use only obey the http_proxy environment variable. Other programs, such as Evolution, seem to not obey the Gnome system proxy settings but only the ones set in GConf (not DConf) (which were also "magically" reset today).

  • Firefox suddenly stopped opening webpages, while other browser work properly. I checked Proxy settings and everything that is mentioned in the central help page, but still no solution found...

In addition, i tried to re-install Firefox many times, without a result. In the time these lines are written, I am using Google Chrome to surf the web.
Neither proxy settings, nor the true/false ipV6 values helped.
    The '''"symptoms"''' are as following:
--> The programm itself starts correctly, at usual speed, with no crashes or error messages to pop-up.
--> No page is displayed, neither the home page, nor any other one. I only see a blank white page.
-->The name of the starting tab, as of any other new tab I try to open is "(Untitled)"
-->There is no probability of errors in the Internet Line, because I am using it right now, running Chrome.
-->The full scan results are totally clean, using Panda Internet Security 2011, activated and updated.
-->The Error Console shows the following messages:

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

  • Locking proxy settings in Firefox 6? doesn't seem to work the same as 5?

Trying to lock down the proxy settings so users can't disable the proxy. Did this in 5 by editing the firefox.js file in omni.jar then creating a mozzila.cfg file, but same technique doesn't appear to work in 6.
    Any ideas what's different?

This does not seem to apply to Firefox 6. I cant locate a place to configure all user settings like there was in the previous versions of Firefox. My Scenario is-
Terminal Server on 2008 R2 and trying to configure all user settings that will apply to all users launching Firefox from the TS.
All documentation and references I have found after an exhaustive search all reference FF 4 and before. Any thoughts?

  • Wi-Fi Proxy settings work in Safari, but not recognised by other apps?

    Hi all,
At home, my iPod Touch (gen two, Firmware 2.2.1) connects fine to our wireless router and all applications (e.g. Safari, Tap Tap Revenge 2 etc) can access the internet. We have no proxy setting at home..
Then, at uni we use special "manual http" proxy settings and had to jump through a bunch of hoops downloading certificates etc. I can connect fine to this wireless network at uni. Safari works perfectly with these settings, as expected.
However when I try and access the internet from another application (for example, Youtube or Mail) the request will time out. My assumption is that it is because these applications are not using the proxy settings that i set -- whereas Safari is, and is therefore working normally. The same issue occurs on every other application besides Safari when connecting to the web. Keep in mind this all works at home.
I don't think it is an issue with things being blocked by the uni, as we can get Live Messenger working fine on our laptops there. In fact there is documentation provided by the uni to connect to the wireless from an iPod/iPhone.
Does anyone know why the other applications (including ones coming default on the phone) are ignoring these proxy settings?
Thought i might ask here, as I'm not back at uni until tuesday.
    Thanks in advance.

Proxy Settings may be set by connection however - that does not imply that all of the services provided by Apple Utilise these connections.
*iPod Touch - No Firmware Updates Applied*: Able to use services like Google Maps, YouTube, Weather
    (Confirmed on 3 iPod Touches)
*iPod Touch - Latest Firmware Updates Applied:* Unable to use services like Google Maps, YouTube, Weather. (Confirmed that this connection fails on 2/3 that have been upgraded, one is still pre v2 firmware and connects fine)
Both iPod Touches are configured identically - with a static IP address, differing by one digit.
Same DNS, Same Gateway, Same Proxy IP Address, Same Username/Password.
The issue is not caused by configurations, it is caused by a difference in how authenticate proxy configurations are handled between the firmware supplied with a pre v2 iPod Touch, and the updated v2 firmware.
Perhaps v3 will resolve this issue, but at this time if you have any choice, do not upgrade further iPod Touches to v2 if you require internet access via an authenticated proxy in applications such as Maps, Weather, Mail etc.

  • Removing firefox proxy settings does not work until a restart?

When I transfer from my work network (with a proxy server) to my home network (no server), I have to restart the browser before it realizes that there is no proxy server that it has to authenticate with. Until I do this, (re)loading pages gives me an error.
However, when going the other way, it smoothly recognises that there is a server, and no restart is required to continue browsing
I have automatic proxy settings enabled. I have tried selecting 'no proxy server', but I still need to restart firefox for this to work.

In Firefox 3.6.4 and later the default connection settings have been changed to "Use the system proxy settings".
See "Firefox connection settings" in [[Server not found]]
You can find the connection setting here: Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select ''No Proxy''

  • Proxy settings working and not working

    Hi all,
I use a Mac Mini to develop within a proxy-controlled network. It's a Windows domain, btw. I have my user and password correctly set in System Preferences, and I use Safari to surf the web.
Well, the strange thing is that sometimes I can surf, sometimes not. Sometimes I'm answering in a forum and my answer gets lost... So I've asked the admin here to check the proxy requests of my Mini: he says that many requests arrive with NO AUTHENTICATION, anonymous.
Is this occurring to some other of you?
I suppose there is a bug in proxy settings management in 10.8.2.

I have noticed, that I had to change proxy server name to IP address and then Safari and AppStore started working.
Unfortunately any other application still doesn't work
It looks like after upgrade to Yosemite there is a quite big issue with use of proxy settings

You can try to set '''Auto-detect proxy settings for this network''' in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''Network''' > '''Settings'''. If it's still not working you may have to contact the network provider.
