ProxySTA on Airport Extreme?

I need to connect to Ethernet from a PVR in a room that is not cabled, but is accessible on wireless from a Zyxel VDSL router. I have an Airport Extereme with LAN ports, but cannot activate them. I have read about ProxySTA, but cannot find the "allow ethernet clients" in the setup.
I have both AIrport Utility 5.6 and 6.0, and my Airport Extreme is running firmware 7.6. From the discussions it seems it worked on 7.5.2, but I guess I cannot downgrade frimware. WDS is not an option since my router is not compatible with AE on this function.
Is Proxy STA removed from 7.6? If not, how can I activate it?

Unfortunately, ProxySTA is a special feature that will only work on an AirPort Express 802.11n model. It works on all versions of firmware for the Express "n" version..
Proxy STA is not offered as a feature on the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, so it would not matter which version of firmware you were using on one of these products.
You might want to consider a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to provide an Ethernet signal where it is needed....if running an Ethernet cable is not an option.

Airport Extreme and Airport Express and Slingbox (and ProxySTA) = confused

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) acting as a router behind an Actiontec modem (in bridge mode) on Verizon in the east coast.
I can connect my Slingbox Solo to the AEBS with an ethernet cable and set everything up to see video off the internet in another city - fine.
But I really would like to have my Airport Express connect to my AEBS as a wireless bridge (using ProxySTA) with my slingbox connected to my Airport Express through a ethernet cable (they are in a different room from the AEBS).
I've confirmed both my AEBS and Airport Express are the latest models, n-capable, etc.
I think I've followed all the instructions correctly for setting up the wireless bridge (I followed these instructions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2638404&start=15&tstart=0)
I have also done port forwarding of the Slingbox Solo in AEBS (using the method discussed at the bottom of this page: http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?4,2774962)
Anyway the problem is that the slingbox is not working the same as when I had it connected to the AEBS directly by cable - the slingbox is "recognized", and is listed in AEBS's client list, but still regular video signals aren't coming through.
(Please don't be too thrown off by the fact that this is a slingbox; the advice I'm looking for could apply to anything being connected, like an Xbox, a playstation, etc. )
I've tried a few obvious things like hard re-sets of both Airports and the slingbox to no avail.
I have a sense that the problem may have something to do with my port-forwarding and/or other settings -- I'm totally a babe in the woods here.
There are a few issues I'm confused about, and would appreciate clarification on:
For the port-forwarding ip address, was it correct of me to use the "DHCP reservation" ip address I had setup in AEBS for the slingbox?
For the Airport Express settings, should I have selected the "join network" or the "extend network" option (I've read conflicting advice about this)?
I configured the port-forwarding of the slingbox ip address before setting up the wireless bridge configuration. What is the interplay between these 2? Do the wireless bridge settings need to be integrated into the port-forwarding settings in some way? Should the wireless bridge ip address be port-forwarded in addition to the slingbox ip address?
I have come across this discussion (second from last post): http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=84151&highlight=proxysta which introduced these new questions to me - how should I set up my settings at AEBS ->Internet->NAT? Should I enable default host? enable NAT port mapping? what should be filled in if using Enable default host?

It's not documented in Apple's user guide, but the only way to use ProxySTA is configure the AirPort Express to "join" a wireless network and "enable ethernet clients" during setup.
The Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it is configured to "join". It simply receives a wireless signal from your main router and provides a signal at the ethernet port. In effect, it becomes another LAN port on your main router supported by a wireless connection. (You won't get ethernet speeds...you'll get wireless speeds).
The main advantage of setting the AirPort Express up this way is that it provides better bandwidth performance.
If you use the "extend a wireless network" setup, the Express provides more wireless coverage in the area where it is located AND the ethernet port is also enabled in this configuration. But, there is some bandwidth loss providing the additional wireless coverage.
So, it's a compromise to choose which setup will provide you with the best performance. If you don't need the additional wireless coverage from the Express, the "join" setup would be the best choice, performance wise.
If you have the Express setup to "extend" now, you can perform a simple test to see if you got the configuration right. Just plug in a laptop to the ethernet port on the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and see if you get an internet connection when you open your browser.
If you do, the configuration is correct. If you don't, something is not right with the configuration of the Express.
Sorry, I can't help on the port forwarding questions. That really should be another post.

this is my issue i bought a Airport Express to connect a PC via ethernet to my wireless network already working at home. Cant figure out the settings???? need help. My home network is using a airport extreme base station. the problem is the PC doesn't have wireless capability so i connected the PC to the airport extreme in order to connect to the network, but no luck so far.

Airport Extreme Base Station as Access Point/DHCP relay

Hi there, I am getting overly frustrated with both the hardware and its doc, so I figured I'd ask here...
Basically, I have a DSL modem that is also a router and wireless router (non-Apple, Westell) setup upstairs. What I would like to do is be able to use an AE to extend my network: the AE would be connected wirelessly to my network and provide ethernet ports for appliances in my basement... I have googled all over and only could find vague answers (either "sure you can" or "use bridge") but nothing detailed... I can't believe this cannot be done, does anyone have recommendations or detailed info?

The AirPort Extreme can "extend a wireless network", but only if that network has been created by another Apple(n) base station. You won't be able to configure it to "join" your network and have the ethernet ports active.
The Airport Express(n) has a very nice feature called ProxySTA. In brief, this allows the AirPort Express to "join" virtually any wireless network according to the article below. By checking the "enable ethernet clients" box, the ethernet port will be active. You could connect a simple switch to the ethernet port on the Express if you need more ports at the "remote" end.

Airport Extreme (802.11n) - Airport Express (802.11n) - XBOX360 (LAGGY)

I purchased an Airport Express to bridge my Airport Extreme to my XBOX wirelessly. I used the "extend this network" option to extend my current wireless network. The XBOX is connected to the ethernet port on the express. It seems to connect to the internet fine for streaming movies or downloading files. When I try to play games the connection is extremely laggy. I can manage (barely) if I only play as a client. If I host a game everyone in the room complains that the game is unplayable. _The latency is HORRIBLE_. This is unfortunate considering I purchased this specifically to connect my XBOX instead of the Microsoft wireless adapter.
My question is -- Is there a setting I can change to make the connection faster (less laggy) or is a better option just to return the device and get the Microsoft adapter?

Since you are connecting your Xbox 360 to the AX via Ethernet only, I suggest that you reconfigure your new 802.11n AX as a ProxySTA instead of using it to extend the wireless range of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). As a ProxySTA the AX would perform like an Ethernet bridge.

Why can't my AirPort Express (A1084) see my AirPort Extreme network?

I've done lots of searching and it seems that the answer is that it simply can't, but that doesn't make sense to me and I just want to make sure before I completely give up. Specifically, what I'm trying to do is get my old AirPort Express to join the network I have set up with my new AirPort Extreme (A1521) and then pass the signal via ethernet cable to my Xbox. When I try to set up the old Express in AirPort Utility (v5.6) and it asks me to choose a network to join, it doesn't see any (not even neighbors' linksys, etc). Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting that I need to change in the way my Extreme is set up? I was hoping that since, according to Apple literature, the Extreme is compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n devices, that the old Express would see it and just run off the G signal and this would work, no?

The A1084 (and A1088) versions of the AirPort Express do NOT have this type of capability.
You need a feature called ProxySTA which was added to the A1264 Express, when Apple introduced the product in 2008.
The current A1392 version also incorporates this feature.

AirPort Extreme + AirPort Express ≠ bridge to server

Here's the dilemma: my office recently purchased a multifunction Toshiba printer, which must be accessed wirelessly to print, scan, etc. This is accomplished via a server (aka the "Fiery").
Our LAN centers on an AirPort Extreme (802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n), which provides our internet access via its ethernet connection to a cable modem. Originally we extended the network via a Cisco Linksys bridge, which recently was rendered useless by a power outage.
Thinking that keeping everything within the Apple family would obviate some of the troubles we had to deal with when using the Cisco bridge, I added an AirPort Express, plugging it directly into the surge suppressor that protects the Fiery and the printer. The Express connects to the Fiery via ethernet.
While both Extreme and Express were showing solid greens in AirPort Utility, and I had set up the Extreme to "create" the network and the Express to "extend" it, I still cannot connect to the printer from my Mac—the whole point of this exercise. Any thoughts? Thanks!

If your goal is to provide Ethernet connectivity to the printer using the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), you don't necessarily need to configure both base stations for an extended wireless network.
Instead, you can configure the AXn as a ProxySTA. (Apple's term of a wireless Ethernet bridge.) As a ProxySTA, the AXn would "join" the wireless network created by the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. Airport Extreme in Bridge Mode for HD Homerun to join network wirelessly

I want capture over the air TV shows via an HD Homerun and store these shows on my mac mini. My current situation in my home makes it very difficult to install a wired ethernet network. I am thinking about adding a wireless ethernet bridge with a an airport extreme or other brand to bring the HD Homerun into the network. I currently have an airport extreme bas station as my router plugged into a cable modem. The mac mini and an imac 1gz and mcb are also wirelessly on the network. I am wondering if this wireless bridge would be adequate to handle the transfer of over the air video to the macmini. Anyone tried this type of thing?

In order for the AirPort Extreme to perform as a wireless Ethernet bridge, it would have to be configured to extend a wireless network provided by another AirPort or Time Capsule. Only the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge (Apple calls this ProxySTA) by joining a wireless network created by any manufacturer's wireless router or wireless access point.
Unfortunately, the ProxySTA feature offers the lowest bandwidth performance. The following would be the typical throughput performance based on the AXn's configuration on the 2.4 GHz band:
o Wired-to-wireless (Default configuration as a wireless router): 85 Mbps
o Wireless-to-wireless (AXn configured to extend another AirPort or Time Capsule) : 33-39 Mbps
o Wireless-to-wired (ProxySTA configuration): 26-35 Mbps

How do I use my AirPort Extreme base station with my FIOS Router to extend my network? I have hard disks connected to my AirPort Extreme and would lik to access them.

Probably can't answer all your questions - but.... I use a Linksys (wired and wireless) router as my primary entry point for FIOS. I use a Time Capsule and an Airport Express as a common wireless connection. So I have two visibile wireless networks and use them both depending on where I am in the house. Both the TC and AEx can be seen either wirelessly or wired from the entire network. Note - the Linksys provides all the DHCP - you set the apple routers as "bridge mode."

Help setting up Open DNS with new airport extreme

I cant seem to get Open DNS to work with a new airport extreme. The status says I am not using Open DNS and its not filtering anything. I have followed the exact steps for set up listed on their website, checked the dns settings, cleared both caches and restarted the computer, modem and router with no success. I set the airport up in bridged mode, although I tried the other option under setup, but not sure what I was doing? I picked up this router because I wanted easy set up and the apple store assured me it would work with Open DNS. Oh, and I also downloaded the latest firmware update on the router. Can anyone help me with the settings or what else I need to check?

I found that your device is mentioned as follows in the intro under Section 1 of this document:
The BellSouth supplied Westell 2100, 2200 and 6100 models (Models A90-210030-04, B90-220030-04, and B90-610030-06/C90-610030-06, respectively) share many features and functions.
Next, I am referring to the information under Section 2, under the heading of Standard Default Mode Connection (separate hub or switch present). Unless you have changed the configuration on the Westell, this is how your device is operating. In this mode, the Westell device is acting both as a modem and router in one unit.
So, an attached router (AirPort Extreme) must be configured as a switch to work correctly. That is what Bridge Mode is....the AirPort Extreme is operating as a switch when it is in Bridge Mode (which would be the correct setting to use when the Westell is set to its Standard Default Mode).
Any changes that you want to make regarding DNS settings would need to be made on the Westell device, since it is acting as the main router on your network.
In Bridge Mode, the AirPort Extreme simply passes that information through to its connected devices. You will not be able to make any DNS related changes on the AirPort Extreme since it receives that info from the Westel device. Some service providers force you to use their DNS servers, so you might want to check with Bell South or AT&T for more information in this regard.
If you want to be able to configure the AirPort Extreme as the main router on your network, and instruct it to use the DNS information that you want, you will need to refer to the section under the heading of Bridged Ethernet Mode ( separate router present).
Please note that the first item under this heading specifies that "This is the preferred configuration when using a separate external router..." (which would be the AirPort Extreme in your case)
So, it appears to me that this would be the way that you must reconfigure the Westell device to allow the AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on your network. In this type of setup, you will be able to enter the DNS information that you want to use under the setup for the AirPort Extreme and it will act as you instruct.
The AirPort Extreme would not be configured in Bridge Mode for this....it would be configured to "Share a public IP address".
The next item in the article specifies that you "Must use a PPPoE client on the Router." This means that the AirPort Extreme would be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE as follows:
AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = PPPoE
You would enter your user name (probably your email address), password, etc in this area. Leave the Service Area box completely blank. Set Connection to Always On, and Disconnect if Idle to Never
Click Update to save the new settings. Power off the Westell device after this and then restart it so that it will pick up the new information that you have programmed into the AirPort Extreme.
I want to stress that this is how I would try to configure the Westell and AirPort Extreme. But, as I said, have not used a Westell device, so I cannot say that this will work correctly for you.
It might be an excellent idea to contact Bell South or AT&T Support to ask for their opinion on this before you decide to change the configuration of the Westel device and the AirPort Extreme.
This type of thing can be intimidating for users, so you might elect to use the services of someone like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or a similar service from a local computer firm. Perhaps the Apple store could help as well.
If it is not critical that you use Open DNS, you might want to simply leave things "as is", with the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode.

How do I open the same ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station for multiple computers at the same time?

As the title suggests...
I have a mix of five Mac and PC's at home using an Airport Extreme Base Station as the router.   I need many ports opened on the AEBS for all of the computers- not just one computer. (for example: three people want to play TF2 on Steam at the same time; each machine needs the correct ports open on the router).   Port forwarding only allows me to forward a given port to a single IP, yet I need that port open for five differnt IP's, all at the same time.
How do I do that on an AEBS?
In the same way, I have a small office of four iMacs using an old airport with the same exact issue.   I would like to be able to connect to all of them remotely with Apple Remote Desktop, but the port forwarding on the airport only allows a port to forward to a single IP.   I want to be able to tunnel into the office network and log onto any machine behind the Airport extreme... not just a single IP.    I currently have it set up where I can tunnel into the office from my house, I can find the one machine that the port forwarding has been assigned to, I can log on and everything is just fine... with one machine.    How do I open the firewall for the other machines?
TL,DR version: How do you open ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station instead of forwarding ports?   Forwarding ports doesn't work for multiple IP's.

You can open a single or multiple ports to a single device or different ports to different devices, but you cannot open the same port to multiple devices via the AirPort Utility for the Apple routers.

How do I add an airport extreme to a cable modem with only one ethernet port, while keeping that port connected to my Mac?

I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet. There is only one ethernet port on the modem.
I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed. Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?

The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.

Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well.

Airport Extreme no longer recognizes or provides internet to wired devices

Not sure if it was the power outage or an update that is the problem; but, I had a 5th generation Airport Extreme as the center of my home network with a solid connection to the internet for both my wired and wireless components. A few days ago, after a power flicker (all components on surge protectors) my wireless internet would not stay connected more than 45 seconds before dropping and oddly, none of my wired components we showing up on the network or getting an internet signal from the AEBS. After two hours with my ISP technical support personnel we deduced that the problem was the AEBS and the modem was fine. I bought a new AEBS yesterday (the new long cube one) to use until my appointment to have the 5th gen looked at. Plugged that in and instantly my wireless network came back up - rock solid. However, anything I connect directly to the AEBS via ethernet does not get an internet connection or show up in the network. I searched for two days in these forums for a similar problem - but, have gotten nowhere. I used my wired connections for internet phone service and really need to get this fixed soonest. Much thanks for any help anyone can throw my way.

I would find it odd that you would have a replacement AirPort and still not have Ethernet connectivity ... but, of course, anything is possible. The DHCP service on the AirPort provides IP addresses to both wired and wireless clients by default so it shouldn't work for either if there was something amiss with it.
At this point, I would suggest that you try the following:
Perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort. After it resets it will default to its "out-of-the-box" configuration which is a wireless Internet router that will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN.
Without making any changes to the AirPort, try connecting any of your wired devices to it. If it still does not get the proper IP address and network connectivity I would suggest that you try performing a complete power recycle of your networking hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

Time machine can no longer see USB drive connected to airport extreme

According to what I read, as of March, a year ago March, with update 7.3.1 Time Machine will see the USB hard drive connected to the Airport Extreme. This was working fine. It no longer does. I had the latest airport extreme software and firmware updates. I tried going back to 7.3.1.
Does any one have any idea how to make Time Machine work again when connected to my airport extreme?

what exactly do you mean when you say that TM doesn't see the drive? do you mean you can not choose it as the destination TM drive in TM system preferences? do you see the airport drive mounted in finder? if yes, connect it directly to your mac and repair the disk (not permissions) with disk utility. then move it back to AEBS. see if that helps. if not try the following terminal command
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
it should not be necessary with drives connected to AEBS but it might work.
