PS CC (since JAN 2014 update) Layer-mask editing causes hangs/crashes

ONLY since JAN 2014 update, PS CC has been hanging/crashing when I paint/edit a layer mask. All may be well at first (or not), but suddenly the display of the mask (or mask overlay on the layer itself, as shown when hitting backslash key) is not shown in full but renders in s-l-o-w-l-y in rectilinear pieces <snapshot below was taken before video card upgraded but is still typical of what I mean>. When I view Windows' Task Manager for PS, I see my CPUs are each working at their upper limits (up to 80+-90+%), varying only by a few points, over a VERY long time... which could be MANY minutes. OR the System has decided PS is Not Responding.
In any case, whenever this happens, it means in all practicality PS CC is not working, so I either kill it or it's crashed.
Now, here's the thing: that VERY file, can immediately be opened in PS CS6 (which I have fortunately kept installed on my computer), and the mask will be as I thought it should be, and I can edit it as I always could, just fine! So it's obviously a PS CC thing, and I do NOT recall this happening prior to the JAN update. It is still a problem after the two subsequent updates.
I have not been able to determine the specific instances when this happens, as it seems to happen whenever I am editing a mask, no matter what size/softness/color brush, what magnification, what view mode, many or few layers, big or small file, etc.
I did upgrade my NVIDIA card (from GeForce GTX 260 [with current driver] to GTX660), just in case it was a factor (maybe kept it from crashing as fast? hard to tell... but it's still an unworkable problem). You can see from my Sys Info shown here from the PS CC Help menu  that it should be more than sufficient for any PS CC task, and it's running the latest driver:

I work on digital-photography files, and use a layer mask in almost every file, so this relatively-recent bug is a big PITA, having to switch back and forth between CS6 and CC!
Until there's a fix... is there a way to roll-back my PS CC version to BEFORE the JAN 15, 2014 update?

I am not qualified to comment on technical issues; I'm just a user whose son in IT is my 'technical support department.' (But he's not much of a PS user.)
I'm pretty sure, however, that all my Prefs were set to the same things BEFORE the Jan 16, 2014 PS CC update as after (unless the update itself changed something I was unaware of... the settings APPEARED to be the same but I can't easily locate my notes of what my Prefs were from long ago).
And they were the same as the PS CS6 I have had installed on this same system for a very long time, with older video card with older driver, with newer driver; newer video card with newest driver, etc. Yet after that CC update, CC has not (until this workaround) worked re 'the masking bug' for me, yet CS6 has always worked just the same.
So I conclude that the only variable (other than the video card upgrade I did in an attempt to solve this and of course those Windows auto-updates) in this scenario IS something to do with PS *CC*, and after Jan 16, 2014.
As for restarting the machine vs. restarting PS, well, PS is the major player of my system, so when I shut that (and LR) down, I might as well 'clean things up' by Restarting. BTW, I am in the habit of closing and reopening PS (CC or CS6) whenever I finish with a file and load another, in order to get back some of that memory which PS never seems to want to let go. (This is not new to the latest versions, I think. My son says it's a 'memory hog'? ;-) ) I track its memory use in Windows' Task Manager and find that seems to let it 'refresh' itself. (See, I told you I'm not a technical person. ;-) ) But I do not think this has anything to do with the bug. Just a quirk of PS. Like when a tool goes all wonky (for example, its little icon becomes just a 'plus' sign even though the tool is still performing correctly, it's telling me, I think, that it would like to be restarted. And that makes it feel all better... I mean, tool icon reappears.)
Anyway... it's up to Adobe to figure out IF and what may be wrong with PS CC -- it still doesn't work for me as I had it configured at first, and I think it should, right? -- and to fix that... PLEASE. SOON.

  • Bug report: [layer mask] editing colors

Sometimes it appears that the white/black color combination that is automatically selected in layer mask editing may override the selected color combination outside of layer mask editing.
    Example:
    1) Open Photoshop.
    2) Select two colors: white/white.
    3) Create two blank documents, each with an empty Layer 1.
    4) In one document, add a layer mask to Layer 1. The colors should have been automatically switched to black/white as the layer mask is selected.
    5) In this document, use the gradient tool to fill the layer mask with black/white.
    6) Switch to the other document, and notice that the color selection is again white/white.
    7) In this other document, use the gradient tool to fill Layer 1. Notice that the layer is filled with black/white instead of white/white as selected.
    Tested on: PS CS6, Windows 7, 64-bit.

On further testing I think the issue may not be directly related to layer masks at all.
Basically the issue is that the Gradient tool colors don't update to the 'default foreground/background colors' in cases where it seems that they should.
One example of such a case (as illustrated in the original post) is when the Gradient tool keeps the black/white color combo used for a layer mask in a previous document after switching to the current document where a non-masked layer is targeted and the default fg/bg colors have correctly reverted to white/white.
    Example:
layer mask targeted in doc1 - notice synchronised Gradient and default fg/bg colors
after switching to non-masked layer in doc2, Gradient is still black/white although default fg/bg colors have reverted appropriately to white/white
Bug or not, it's something I wanted to point out as it seems inconsistent.

  • Non-destructive layer mask editing?

I just finished sweetening a mult-layered texture I was creating and suddenly had a thought - I create my texture in overlaid layers so that I can endlessly tweak, and my process is non destructive, but when I create layer masks for each layer, those have to be edited destructively... so I dupe layers in case I decide I want to go back. This makes for lots of extra backup layers.
So - is there some clever way of non-destructively editing a layer mask? It sounds kinda crazy, but would be super cool if there was a feature to have nested layers just for my layer mask.

Well, you could save as alphas, but then you are still doing destructive edits and archiving them. Only now, they are removed from the layers palette, and it would be easier to forget what goes where. If I leave the copies in the layers palette and turn them off, at least I can group in folders or something - I have a clearer picture of what goes with what.

  • Since my Firefox update this week, Thurdasday, it has crashed 10 times for no reason. What's up

Since the Firefox update was sent out this week. I keep having unexpected crashes. There does not seem to be a pattern. It does send you reports. But just this morning it has crashed twice. Yesterday it crashed three times and the day before two. I switched to using Chrome and have not had an issue.

  • Since CC (2014) update SVG assets dragging in at 900%

My assets SVG files are coming/dragging in at 10% not 100% and when I change to 100% it's Huge (almost 900%)
Original SVG assets showing at large size (I have not touched it)
I checked my SVG files in Illustrator and they are at the right size

    Hi ,
In Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014 we have addressed the SVG pixilation issue which was observed on browsers when any SVG content is animated with "scale up" transform. To solve this problem we are scaling up the container div by a factor of 10(which is by default) and then using image filtering to reduce the resolution based on the inverse scale.
Property panel will show this inverse transform scale since that is the transform scale applied to the svg element.
However, you can also change this svg anti scale value.
This scale factor can be changed from:
    1. Close Animate
    2. Open the preference folder:
    a. Windows: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Edge Animate\4.0.0\
    b. Mac: /Users/{username}/Library/Prefrences/Adobe/EdgeAnimate/4.0.0/
    3. Open the AppPrefs.xml file in a text editor.
    4. Search for the Current line in AppPrefs.xml:
    <key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
    <float>10</float>
    Update this to:
    <key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
    <float>1</float>
    5. Launch Animate.
However note: This setting will work only for new animate content that you create after this setting is applied - i.e it will work only for newly pasted SVG’s in a new composition.
Exiting Animate compositions opened after applying the setting(Step 5 above) will still show the same problem. You will need to delete the SVG and copy-paste again.

  • Jan 2014 Update made my S III Unstable

Ever since the update, I've had problems with my phone crashing. Most commonly, it's while I'm in the Chrome browser, but it has also happened at other times (i.e. I can't blame Chrome). Just a few minutes ago, it crashed while downloading updates from the app store. It was so bad that I had to remove the battery to recover my phone.
Is there *anything* I can do to help restore system stability? My S III has, up this this January's update, been very stable and reliable - it just worked. Now, it's an expensive paperweight.
    Steve G.

In situations as this when removing the battery for about 30 seconds and rebooting (restarting) the device doesn't solve the 'crashing' or locking up problem, you probably will need to perform a hard factory reset (after backing up user data) from the system settings  or from the Android System Recovery Mode (rebooting by simultaneously long-pressing the power button + the volume up button + the home button).
But first, try one or more of the  following steps:
    1. Power off and remove both the battery and the sim card for 30 seconds, then power on.
    2. Uninstall all user downloaded apps and reinstall one at a time (starting with the app that seems to be the culprit, Chrome browser in your case). If you're able to isolate the app responsible for the problem, uninstall it and report your findings to the app developer/s listed in the app description on Google Play Store, as well as to Verizon Technical Support.
    3. If after performing the above steps and the problem remains, a factory reset generally is the recommended action to take. (After doing a few of these hard resets, they're not so scary as they first were. Just remember to backup all important user files and optionally remove any external memory SD card/s, though factory resets normally do not affect the removable memory files.)
IMPORTANT FOR REMOVAL OF SD CARDS--Go to your device system settings and in the storage menu option be sure to 'unmount' your removable memory card/s before powering off and removing the card/s to avoid possible corruption of the external memory.
    4. Finally, if all else fails, call Verizon Technical Support (or take your device to a Verizon store) to test your device and, in many cases like yours, they will replace your device with a new or factory-refurbished model. If you are eligible for an upgrade to another device of your choice, you may have nothing or little to pay with an extended 2 year contract, or you can purchase another device outright. (Another replacement option is to purchase a new or used certified Verizon mobile device from retail stores such as Amazon or eBay making sure that the device is 'clean' not stolen.)

  • Security Update 2007-006 Univ causing randoms crashes

Right after i did an update yesterday, i have had around 6 random crashes where i have to hold down power button to turn comp off. This is after the screen does a fade from the top of the screen to the bottom, greys out. Happened once on launch of Safari, and other times when its idle.
    Anyone else having this problem?

    Cesar,
Wonderful. I'm really glad to hear that. I have not had a chance to do it myself but will soon. I feel I need to get a backup drive first, even though you managed without any problems. I did call apple today and got my case started and got a case number. I suggest everybody with this issue do the same. the more people reporting the problem the better.
also, i was told there is a battery update in downloads that does not show up when you do a software update. It is something you have to go and get. The techie did not know if it would help but suggested getting it since the issue does seem to be related at least in part to battery power.
Go to Support, then Downloads and scroll down until you find Battery Update 1.2.
I don't have my computer with me so i can't download it myself right now, but if anybody is willing to be the guinea pig, it may be worth a shot if you haven't already gone back to 10.4.9.

  • Windows 7 update breaks Card reader, causes random crashes

    Hi All,
I have a Satellite A500/026 which came with Windows 7 64-bit. Recently, I have found that a) the Card reader no longer works, and b) right after booting, I get an error message indicating that a Toshiba software component has crashed. These symptoms both appeared after a Windows Update, but I can't be sure which one.
The card reader works OK if I boot a live Ubuntu CD, but won't work under Windows, so I assume the problem is with a Windows driver which has been 'updated' during a Windows Update.
Is there a set of Toshiba drivers I should re-install after a Windows Update, or do I just have to wait until Microsoft fixes whatever-they-broke in whichever-update-it-was-that-broke-it?
    Any other ideas?
    Leigh.

Try to roll back OS to previous time using system restore tool and see if this will fix the problem.
For Windows update use important updates only. Do not install options updates.
Roll back OS at first and send some feedback.

  • Serious overall loss of performance since cc 2014

    Hi guys
While the last version of CC was working flawlessly on my mac, since the 2014 update its not the case anymore.
I really lost in performance with the "last" version and CC 2014 is at best really laggy and unstable when i use it.
I've ran multiple cleaner software, uninstalled and reinstalled, checked a lot of forums yet no answer for this unwanted lost of performance ...
Any kind of hint would be great. Thanks.

    Hello Crispe,
Could you please share with us the test file @ "[email protected]" so that we can reproduce the problem at our end? Please be assured that your test file would solely be used for reproducing the issue and won't be shared elsewhere.
Please include the link (CC 2014 - another noticeable degradation in performance) in the mail you send.

  • Since the last update Firefox has been crashing constantly and something is VERY WRONG with the update!!!!!!!!! Why?

Since the last update to Firefox, I have had crashes non stop about every ten minutes or so, with very typical use. The update SUCKS and is crashing computers. I am SURE I am not the only one. PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP. I have been a Firefox user forever, but now going to Chrome and Explorer until I hear from you about fixing this issue. Never before have I had this problem with Firefox. Bums me out. But I can't deal with the constant crashes and it is ABSOLUTELY since the last update a day or two ago.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:<br>
    [[Image:FirefoxSafeMode|width=520]]<br><br>
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

    Hi Mark,
I know you have an SR open, but I'm also curious if you also applied the latest tntfs.ko driver?
@Anders: is there some more detail to what the symptoms are of that found defect and in which situations it might occur?

  • Layer Mask issues cc 2014

So recently I installed CC 2014 and just two days ago the layer mask stopped allowing me to draw into the mask. I can lasso in the mask. I can switch to white and edit the mask with the brush. I can use erase and edit the mask. But I can't draw into the mask. This is HUGE problem in my workflow. Any suggestions to trouble shoot this would be great! Has anyone else encountered this? Is there an update that addresses this bug? Thanks!

It was set to normal. I read a response to a similar problem and a user had it set to dissolve. So I checked it just in case. It wasn't. Then I started having the same issue on a regular layer...So I grabbed my backup Cintiq pen to see if it was a Cintiq issue ( I have an older 21). It happened with that pen, as well. Then I opened the file in CS4 and everything is working fine....it limits me to the brushes I created in CS4 though. The long term issue of CC2014 will have to be resolved, because this seems like a bug. It's been working fine for a week and half until yesterday...

  • Since the new software update I am no longer able to syn my itunes playlist to my ipod nano.  Everything that has been put online since Nov 2014 is not helping, any suggestions?

iTunes latest update has now stopped my ability to sync a specified playlist from my iTunes library to my ipod nano.
All suggestions on line since Novemeber 2014 have not seemed similar to my nano - it is 16gb and very old, not sure what generation.
The screen on this one is long an rectangle and not a touch screen.  A round disk that you run your thumb around has e menu, forward, backward and play/stop button, hope this helps you know which one I am referring to.
Also any iTunes help for my device so far has not addressed and update and how to now use my device.

Okay - let's cut to the chase...
If the Menu Bar (File, Edit... Help) shown in my screenshot below is not visible, use CTRL+B to display it. Then click on Help/Check for Updates. If one is available, you will be able to select it at this time.
Note the item at the bottom of the list; About iTunes. Selecting that will show you which version of iTunes you are using.
An alternative method to display the Menu Bar is click on the box in the top left of your iTunes window...
