PS crashes in Windows 7.  Possible windows explorer issue?

Hi,
I have an intermittent but annoying problem.  Basically, when I use the "Open" dialogue box to access a new file CS4 will hang, shutting down completely.  The same issue has occured when using the "Place" command.  It doesnt seem to happen when using Bridge to open files. A possibly related issue is that although this does not happen every time it does seem to come in spates and when it does CS4 automatically shuts down the automatic advanced openGL functions (i.e. no revolving my screen dynamically while drawing which realy IS a pain as I am an illustrator and this function was a major draw to upgrading to CS4...)
Does anyone have any advice on how I might resolve this?
Thanks in advance!
Phill Evans

Resetting your preferences is described in the FAQ.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.   A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • RemoteApp Windows Explorer Issue on Recent folders

    Hi,
I have a issue with explorer application on remoteapp / Citrix session, the issue is Windows explorer recent folder not getting updated. On regular RDP sessions  to the same server has no issues. All the Recent places getting updated.
I have tried steps on below KB article but no luck
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951048
    Thanks,
    Lakmal

    Hi Dharmesh,
Thanks for the reply, I'm trying to run remote app from different server to the remote app server. I have tried the same with MS word, still the
recent app folders not getting updated even though MS Word correctly shows the recent files on open tab.
I have checked this issue with Citrix,  they said this can be an issue related to full desktop , as remote app is not loading the full desktop while
running the app. They said recent places function might only worked under full desktop.
    Thanks

  • Windows Explorer was crashing/restarting every few seconds and after trying several different methods of fixes, the only one that worked was removing Firefox, is there something I've missed that I can get Firefox back?

I'm running a Toshiba Satellite laptop that was originally running Windows Vista 32-bit, but was upgraded by me to Windows 7 32-bit. On Windows Vista, all I would run was Firefox. I loved it!!! On Windows 7, I've noticed that Firefox kept hanging whenever I would try to download a file...from anywhere. I got so frustrated I went to try several different browsers. They all worked extremely quickly, whereas Firefox was working so slow, I could click on a link to a page, go get some lunch, come back and it still be trying to load the page. This was drastically unusual for Firefox. I used the other browsers and everything was fine for a week and then Windows Explorer started going down every few seconds. I went to the windows 7 forums and started looking. There were several suggestions on how to fix the problem, none of which worked for my compy. I tried restarting the compy in safe mode. That didn't help. I turned off every startup program except for the essentials and that DID work in keeping Windows Explorer from restarting. I then dove into the tedious task of trying to discern which 3rd party program was the offender. I removed everything from my compy that had been downloaded in the last ten days (well before the windows explorer issue, but not before the firefox issue). That didn't work either. I tried replacing an explorer file, which didn't work either. There were several other things I tried, as well, but nothing worked. Then, I saw a post that Firefox had caused the problem for one person. I went in and did as was suggested and completely removed Firefox and all associated files. Unfortunately, this worked. I haven't had any more trouble with windows explorer restarting. My big problem is, however, I can't run Firefox!!! And I LOVE Firefox!!! It's spoiled me! I hate Internet explorer, which is what I'm forced to run now. I've tried Safari and Google Chrome and don't like either one of those, either. I want my Firefox back! But if it's not working 100% it's less frustrating to be forced to live with the Internet Explorer. I'm going insane, here! Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried clearing out browser history, changing download files and a couple of other things and nothing worked with the Firefox to get it going better before I started having the Windows Explorer difficulty and had to completely erase the Firefox program. If I've missed any info, please don't hesitate to ask!! I'm happy to supply whatever I know about the issue!!

uninstalled firefox ....deleted all files still remaining under mozilla firefox directory in program files ... to avoid having to reprogram all my settings, reisntall all addons as well .. I did not remove anything from mozilla firefox that is stored in either appdata or under the windows users directory (if any)
... the as suggested reinstalled the latest version of the firefox browser using the link you provided in the email ..; tested and several issues still remain present and unresolved ....
so please this is urgent or I will have to jump browsers and start using chrome .. because we work 14 hours a day 6 (sometimes 7) days a week, to get ready for the launch of our newest venture and we cannot lose that much days on browser related issues ... so please instead of putting me through week long step process .. of do this .. do that .. can you please actually look into the issue from your end .. I use firefox for so many, many years thta I deserve this kind of support .. thnx Robert

  • Major Issue - Main Interface (Desktop, Windows Explorer, etc)

Seems that my desktop or windows explorer is malfunctioning. Whenever I log on, my desktop is shown, then it proceeds to flash to a colored screen (the theme color), then back to my desktop and so on. It may be that windows is having issues attempting
to identify which screen is on top, but it essentially goes haywire and the only way I can do anything is going into task manager and launching things from there. (Taskbar and other applications/shortcuts don't show up) I should also note that it does stop
flashing back and forth after a while, but I am still unable to do any task, such as toggle the start menu. This is the third time that I have had windows 10 on my pc, the first two times ended in this same problem although I was just too lazy to contact the
forums and just re installed windows 10 (windows 10 seems to work fine for the first little while - 15ish launches) If you are able to help in anyway let me know, if you need any information to do so let me know.

Windows Update  KB3020114 is supposed to fix windows explorer issue.
Suggest that you go to Windows Updates > click Check for updates > see if KB3020114 is available to be installed.

  • Windows Explorer encountered a validation error (?)

Hello. I've seen the above message multiple times with reinstalling Windows, and for different .dll - but mostly the kernelbase.
My motherboard is a MSi product, so I was given a Drivers & Utilities disc to enable internet. As soon as I install the LAN driver, it gives me the error message. The disc also gives me an installation of Google Chrome, but for whatever reason, it's
slow and won't allow me the search engine nor click on any links to obtain a security program like Avast.
The message also pops up whenever I am trying to access IE. Since I'm avoiding the Chrome install from the disc, I tried to maneuver and seek Avast via IE, but it's the same slowness I've encountered with Chrome.
I've tried reinstalling Windows 7 Professional a couple of times to rid of the problem - because I am fairly ignorant and assumed that a virus leaked from just staring at Yahoo! the very first time I was able to open IE. Maybe that isn't the correct road
to take, but there you have it.
I've read other threads of this topic, but everyone's situation is unique and I'm in need of some help. This is a brand new set-up that I've built myself -- and whenever I assembled parts with a MSi motherboard before, with the Drivers & Utilities disc,
I have never encountered the error message before in my life. My internet browsers never took a millennium to open.
Thank you to whomever answers this.
EDIT ADDITION: There is a program option in the Start menu that reads 'Windows PowerShell' and it's for modules. However, it is unable to do so because of the "execution of scripts is disabeled on this system".

    Hi,
The validation errors occur if certain Shell Extension not compatible with Windows or some system files are corrupted.
Regarding Windows Explorer issue, please use ShellExView to disable related extensions of Windows Explorer:
Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip
Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
    b. Extract "shexview.zip" file and open shexview.exe. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions.
    c. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard.
    d. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes.
    e. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.
I would suggest that you run a SFC scan which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Please also install any available Windows updates. Many service packs and other patches replace or update some of the hundreds of Microsoft distributed DLL files on your computer.
If the troubleshooting advices above is unsuccessful, performing a Startup Repair should restore all Windows DLL files to their working versions.

  • Windows explorer disappears when I access my usb 3 hd

    Hi all,
I'm having a very bizarre and infuriating problem where windows explorer often shuts down on me unexpectedly when I am accessing information on my usb 3 western digital hard drive that is attached via my docking station. I have spent about 2 weeks trying to work out what is going on and despite my attempts to fix it recurs....
I have the latest updates from Lenovo
    I have the latest bios
I have the latest Windows updates (running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit)
I have the latest intel usb 3 driver for my T430 (core i7 3520M)
I have the latest firmware and drivers for the WD My Passport HD
I have had the docking station replaced by Lenovo
None of this has helped, so if anyone can advise that would be really appreciated as this weird windows explorer issue is making things unworkable for me. I am led to believe that this is a usb 3 issue specifically because the windows explorer issues doesn't seem to happen when the WD HD is plugged into a usb 2 port (or at least for the couple of hours I was running it in that port explorer didn't die).
    Michael.

I'm wondering if Windows is maybe shutting down the USB 3.0 to save power?
Unfortunately I don't have a system here with 3.0 but maybe you could take a peek in the properties of the controller in device manager to see if there is a power management option to allow Windows to turn it off as with USB 2.0 and other hardware.

  • LOOOOOONG pauses in Windows Explorer with file copy, rename, new folder, etc.

I am using Windows 7 64-bit pro and I am experiencing horribly long pauses in Windows Explorer on very simple file operations, such as renaming a file, copying a file, creating a new folder, etc. Here is an example:
    1. Open a folder in windows explorer, e.g. My Documents
    2. Select a file
    3. Hit F2 and enter a new name for the file, then hit ENTER to save the name
    4. Windows Explorer now shows the wait cursor and becomes completely unresponsive, sometimes for MINUTES.
This is crazy. I read somewhere it may be due to shell extensions -- another post specifically called out MagicDisc, but I uninstalled that and still have the problem. After a fresh reboot the problem usually is not there immediately, but always comes back eventually.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Lex3001,
I would like to confirm what are the results in Safe Mode and Clean Boot?
I also would like to suggest you run ShellExView again and disable some shell extensions to check the issue.
    Run ShellExView
    =================
    1. Launch ShellExView again and scan the computer.
    2. Press "Ctrl" on the keyboard and click all items which are marked in pink in the list.
    3. Choose "File" then "Disable Selected Items".
    4. Quit and restart the computer to check the Windows Explorer issue again.
    Does it work?
In addition, I also would like to suggest you create a new user account to check the result

  • Export function crashes Windows Explorer or at least the exported images do.

This is the first time that I have used the Export function since upgrading to version 2 so believe that it is tied in with the upgrade somehow.
When I choose an image > Export > Temp folder on the Desktop the image does indeed appear in the temp folder. Double clicking on the folder displays the contents and so long as I take no further action nothing more happens. However, as soon as I move the mouse over the image icon this causes Windows Explorer to crash.
With LR closed down, I navigate to the folder where the image is located and by right-clicking > copy I then save a copy to another temporary folder on the desktop. Moving the mouse over the image icon does NOT this time cause Windows Explorer to crash.
I have tried the Export function with RAW, DNG and JPG files to see if the problem was related to any one particular file or file format but it makes no difference - the same problem as described above occurs.
Has anyone else experienced this or can advise on how to possibly isolate this problem?
    Windows XP2 SP3

Thanks for that John. Having done as you suggested, the problem appears to be with a dll file associated with another application I used for displaying cr2 and crw thumbnails in Windows Explorer. In the applications (dpMagic) preferences if I uncheck jpg and jpeg from the file associations Windows Explorer does not crash following Export from Lightroom and in this situation, double-clicking on the exported jpg/jpeg file now results in it opening in Windows Fax and Picture Viewer.
Even uninstalling the application followed by manually searching for any trace of remaining files prior to a fresh install does not cure the problem and I suspect that not all files from this application are being removed.
Anyway, I have now emailed dpMagic support for advice but am happy that the cause of this crash does not now appear to lie with Lightroom.
Thanks again for your advice, regards and have a nice day.

  • After updating to Windows 8.1, Windows Explorer crashes.

Hello, I have recently updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. When it finished the install and reboot, it went to my desktop where my background image was gone, Kaspersky Pure 3.0 was gone, and Windows Explorer crashes every time it is opened. The other
two problems are not as big of a problem right now so I searched around for a fix on this issue. I found that some applications, specifically Autodesk, were causing conflicts. I don't have Autodesk but I decided to update everything anyways. I reinstalled
Kaspersky, fully updated it and ran a scan to see if it was a virus, which it is not. I updated AVG 2014 free, Malwarebytes free, and many others. I also ran Windows Update. I ran CCleaner to see if it would fix the problem and it didn't either. I looked at
the error report and saw that it was caused by StackHash_35ff, which through further investigation turned out to be a fancy term for nothing. What is my problem? I really don't want to restore to an older version because I've spent the better part of the day
allowing Windows 8.1 to bother me. Please help because I'm out of ideas and nothing from other responses seemed to be the solution.

    Okay, so the above worked. I ended the Com Surrogate task, the went into cmd and typed in these two commands;
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
Everything seems to be back in order. I hope this helps anyone who has the same problem, seeing as no one else came up with this solution.

  • My taskbar crashes when I try to open any documents folder. (Windows Explorer, My Library, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Dropbox folder, Skydrive, every folder!)

Hello. I don't know if this is the right category for my problem but here it goes.
Since yesterday, I've been trying to open Windows Explorer folder (which include Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Downloads, Computer, Dropbox, Skydrive, etc.) and as a result my taskbar and my background crashes, the folder doesn't open and then my taskbar
and bg goes back to normal. I searched the problem in other forums but the responses are from last year and this is happening since 29/03/2014 (yesterday) so I don't know if this is a new thing or old. I called my sister because she has this same laptop and
asked her if this is happening to her also and she said it is so I'm starting to think that W8.1 needs an update. Idk :(. We have a Dell Inspiron 15 and it's brand new ! I ordered mine last month.

    Hi,
Did you make any change to your system recently? To fix this problem, firstly, you can try to use
SFC /scannow command to fix it for test.
If problem persists, just try to boot your system into Safe mode to test if this problem occures. If problem occures, It would be better to use system resotre to revert your system to a former timepoint state.
To find the reason about this problem, you can use Process Monitor
to capture Explorer.exe when open folder or library.

  • Help! Windows Explorer crashes regularly when using "SharePoint" directory synced with OneDrive for Business

We are using SharePoint 2013 and I want to sync document libraries with
OneDrive for Business with my PC running Windows 7.
In general, it works, but my Windows Explorer crashes very often (after a few minutes) when I navigate in the synced directories and open files there (or copy files into them in Windows Explorer).
How can I find out what happens and how to avoid it?
    remark:
We are still using Office 2007, so I installed only OneDrive for Business from the Office 2013 DVD and
deactivated all other components like Office 2013 by hand:
(so for example, the shared office feature or MS Info Path etc. were not installed)
Is there a crash log, where I can find more information about the crash?
Does OneDrive maybe need other components to be installed and can I install them without damaging my existing Office 2007 setup?

Did  you check your Event Viewer for any errors during the time when Windows Explorer crashed?
    Thanks for this hint!
The Log file says the following, so it seems to be WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\btncopy.dll
to be responsible for the crashing Windows Explorer

  • Creative Cloud Desktop install crashes Windows Explorer and hangs

This all started with my inability to activate Adobe Acrobat on my computer after wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS.
I had no trouble initially downloading or installing anything from the Adobe Creative Cloud. I ran several apps and they worked (albeit in trial mode for a day or two)
And then the Initial Problem: Trying to Activate Adobe Acrobat failed to get pass the sign-in screen.
It would hang for about 30 minutes and then come back to the error that the computer's clock must be incorrect or an error with the Internet connection. (It's a standard error documented on Adobe's site that says you need to make sure your computer can really get to all of Adobe's activation servers/sites/etc. I double-checked everything in the troubleshooting list to be sure but found nothing wrong with the computer or the ability to get to Adobe's sites.
Exasperated. I went online for tech support. It was definately Level 1 support (had me checking all the stuff I had already spent an hour checking - and had already told him I tested it all).
Anyway, I spent an hour on the chat with Adobe Tech Support going through the usual stuff.
He had me check virus programs, computer clock, conenctions to Adobe sites (like the licensing servers). But nothing ever helped or worked. Then he told me to try going directly to the Adobe Creative Cloud site and trying to download and install the Creative Cloud desktop manager. I did that but it hangs when it launches the manager on the initial window with a black/grey Creative Cloud bar at the top (with the tool drop-down on the right side) but the rest of the window never loads.
After an hour of going in circles I decided it would be better to try again later with someone in second-level support.
In the meantime, I uninstalled ALL Adobe applications. There is no Flash-Player, no Acrobat Reader - nothing from Adobe in my programs list.
I then tried to download and install the Adobe Application Manager. It works up to the point where it launches the Creative Cloud Desktop tools and then hangs at the same place.
There is a Creative Cloud window with the normal black/grey bar at the top - but the rest of the window (where you would normally see and load the apps from) stays empty.
I have rebooted the computer several times to be sure it is a fresh start. That has not helped at all. One additional thing I have noticed in these multiple attempts is that when the Creative Cloud Desktop Manager installer gets about 95% done, it causes Windows Explorer to crash (not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer). Once Windows Explorer resets, Creative Cloud continues the installation but then opens the window (above) that has nothing but the black/grey header.
I'm struggling for what to do next. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I am paying $50 a month for something I can't even install or use.
For what it's worth, the system is an HP laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. 8GB of RAM and plenty of HDD space. All security updates applied and Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1. I doubt that any of that last line is relevant since I could run all of this with no problem before wiping the hard drive AND it was all running with no problem - other than Activating Acrobat at the start of this whole issue.

    Jim,
You are a lifesaver! I can't think of how many additional hours of frustration you just saved me - but Thank You!!
After posting, I had determined (like you said), that Explorer must be doing that for a reason. I created a new user profile on the system (added a user temporarily) and observed the same behavior of Windows Explorer (stopping/starting) but then continuing to work as it should. At that point I knew the answer was somewhere in the user's profile but I would have had no idea where to look. The opm.db file was indeed the culprit.
I sure do appreciate the excellent help.

  • Ejecting iphone causes Windows Explorer to crash

    Hi Guys
After I've synced my iphone in itunes when I eject or remove the iphone from the dock Windows Explorer always "crashes", well it restarts and windows says there has been a problem.
I've got the latest updates for both iphone and itunes. i had the same problem with vista as well (I know I know!).
Any ideas about how to prevent it? Its not terminal just a bit of a pain.
    Thanks in advance

I don't think that this is an iPhone issue. My wife uses Vista and a 3GS and doesn't have the same problem so my guess is that it's a PC config issue.
Have you tried posting on a PC forum?

  • Windows Explorer crashes when plugging or unplugging ipod touch

Seems something is buggy with Itunes 7 or the Ipod Touch itself. This happens to me on 2 different computers, one Dell and one HP so I doubt seriously if it is the computers themselves. All of my drivers on both systems are up to date.
When I plug in the IPOD it will work and sync, however when I unplug it I get a windows explorer crash each time. Needless to say this is irritating as heck.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    thanks
    Redy4it

I have the same problem, even when i use the eject button. I hate vista but on my pc i have no choice but to run it. Never had any problems on my Macs. i also get a strange error on work pc running XP. It says at first that it doesn't recognize the device running in compatibility mode but then it switches over and works fine. I tend to blame it on Microsoft crap, maybe they are updating their OSes to mess with Apple products.

  • Windows explorer + other windows applications crashing regularly at resume from sleep and hibernate

    Good evening,
I have a Thinkpad W510 (4319-29G) running Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The system is loaded with the latest software and drives from Lenovo including BIOS 6NET74WW (1.34), upgrade was done Dec 7th (windows update performed Dec 15th).
    The machine has
    - 8Gb RAM
    - nVidia Quadro FX880M, driver version is 8.17.12.5896, 7-9-2010 and video card BIOS is 70.16.5f.0.b
    - dual harddrives,
       - one Seagate Momentus XT 500Gb (ST95005620AS) FW rev SD23 in the main location with C: and some other partitions
       - one Hitatchi 320 Gb (HTS723232L9SA60) FW rev FC4ZC50B in the bay.
    - Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 AGN, driver version 13.3.0.24, 7-14-2010
    - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection, driver version 11.5.10.1030, 7-22-2010
Recently I have experienced crashes of multiple windows components at resume from sleep and hibernate.
It seems to happen when swithing location (from work to home) and thus switching from docking station with wired network connection to no dock and wireless network connection (dont know if this has any bearing but anyway).
In the event viewer I typically have some 6-12 application errors logged. Sample output from event viewer is:
    Log Name: Application
    Source:Application Error
    EventID:1000
    Level:Error
    Logged:2010-12-15 20:30:02
    Task category100)
    Keywords: Classic
    Computer: xxxxxxx (my computername)
Then for each application the following detailed data is written in event viewer in the general tab:

It seems that a module "nview64.dll" is always the first application to crash. I suspect this has something with graphics to do.
I dont know if this event triggers the following crashes or if it is so that the display is initialized before the other programs.
After all crash diagnostic messages have been shown windows explorer restarts and also other applications restart but a lot of system tools in the system tray are gone so a cold start is needed to restore all tools again.
I really would appreciate any help and suggestions how to fix this really annoying issue.
    Thanks, Anton

I had a similar issue, as soon as a described even a little bit of it to warrenty support they sent someone to swap the board
It seems thats the only fix, its been fine since
