PS CS 5 Cursor sticking as hand tool-more discussion

I just purchased a Macbook pro and also have an iMac.  Both are OCX 10.6.6, laptop is a clone of the desktop.  So why would I have the new issue of the cursor sticking as the hand tool only on the laptop?
Rebooting does not help.  It seems that disconnecting the wacom and totally powering down is the only answer.  Is this an Adobe issue or Mac issue?  It's making me crazy.
Cindy

Maybe the thing PECourtejoie links to in the FAQ has some bering on the issue – mind you, that’s a »maybe«!

  • Why does dragging on a Touch Screen change the cursor into a Hand Tool?

Why does dragging on a Touch Screen change the cursor into a Hand Tool? This did not happen in CS 5.5 and I could edit on my touch screen monitor. With Photoshop CS 6, as soon as I start to drag, the cursor changes to a hand cursor. I have look at all of the system options and nothing seems to affect it so I have to assume it is something wrong with Photoshop CS 6.

Try staying with it for a while.  It is much nicer panning that way.  Give it a flick, and touch the screen again when in the right position.
I think it came in with CS4 BTW, but it makes a lot of sense keeping it on the Touch version.

  • PhotoShop Elements 5.0 Cursor locks to Hand tool

I use Photoshop Elements 5.0, and sometimes, my cursor will lock to the hand tool and I can't use any other tools.  I will exit the program and open it back up, and it will still be locked on the hand tool, but later, it will randomly start working again and let me use the other tools.  How can I fix this?

I'd start by checking the space bar on the keyboard. It might be sticking. When (if) you get stuck in the hand tool, try tapping your space bar.
Reason: The space bar is the shortcut that calls up the  hand tool.

  • How do I reset Cursor not Hand tool on Adobe X on mac with mavericks?

Adobe just started defaulting to hand tool in Adobe X on mac with mavericks.  How do I get my cursor back??

    Hi glbalwarmth,
Acrobat / Reader opens with whatever tool that was selected when it was last closed.
Try the following step and let me know if it worked for you :
    Go to > Acrobat > Preferences >Accessibility
In the section marked 'General', De-select the options 'Make Hand tool select text & images' and 'Make Hand tool read articles'
    Quit Acrobat.
    Reopen and check.

  • How do I stop my Cursor from being stuck on the Hand tool icon?

I have Illustrator 10 (Yes, I'm aware it's old, but I can't afford to buy the newest version, as much as I want it) and Photoshop Elements 1(Again, I know it's old, but I do have 7, but it sucks, because when I go to scale pictures down, there is no option of pixels, just inches, points, and everything but pixels, and I only use pixels, so I only use PSE1), and they both started getting the hand icon as the cursor, no matter what tool I selected.
One time I had Illustrator open, it was fine, left it for awhile, came back, and it was last on the Direct Selection Tool, and it was now showing the hand icon. I would reset the computer and it would be fine, thinking memory is the issue, but it just happened again. I had rebooted my computer(just on an unrelated thing), and decided I'd work on one of my cartoon characters and I loaded it up, and the picture, and voila! The hand icon was showing right off the bat, and I didn't want to reboot again.
Is there something I can do? Seems like these Adobe programs are going "hand" on me. I just am very frustrated, as I never had so much as no trouble with these programs(I had I10 for a long time), and now they go wonky on me. It first started with PSE1, but only once, and I thought it was just a random glitch, nothing to worry about, since it never happened again....til it did much, much later.

  • Cursor defaulting and remaining on Hand Tool

    Hello all
I know this has come up in the forum a few times before, but a colleague and I are both having this issue (randomly, our tool defaults to the Hand Tool and will not switch to a another tool for some time, even after program closure and reopening).
Suggestions I've found here have been to switch off hardware acceleration (have done this on the card side) and to trash preferences, which we have both done but to no avail.
I'm wondering if the problem is persisting for others and/or someone has nailed the issue and could share their solution.
It's happening on three separate machines, so that's unusual in itself - am coming to the conclusion it's a bug, but haven't heard anything widescale about it, so it must be a select few (oh, the joy...).
Apart from this issue, am loving Id CS4 :)
    TIA for any help.

    I would suspect a hardware-factor, too.
You do have you tried tapping the space-bar repeatedly (and with some force)?
Have you tried trashing prefs (though that does seem unlikely to help)?
If it should indeed be some software problem you may want to provide more info on your system, though.

  • Path/Shape tool and Hand tool are awful in CS6.

We recently upgraded to CC at work and I do love the idea. Hypothetically, what could be better? Sadly, CC comes with CS6 which doesn't shine so well. Photoshop in particularl is hindering me and slowing down my productivity. Therefore I am sharing my thoughts and hoping something will get done.
Paths/Shapes in CS6 are absolute trash. As an illustrator, I use these tools frequently on a daily basis. It used to be rapid and easy. Now, when I undo more than one stage I have to reselect the path, so that's +1 click per mistake.
I used to love the expanded pathfinder view, of the shapes/pen tool. Now it's contained in a drop-down which feels very dumbed-down and is +1 click EVERY time I need to use something in there. REALLY AWKWARD and a complete pain to use. Especially if I select the wrong draw mode. Why is there not even the option to use the old expanded view, or a PATHFINDER PANEL added to Photoshop for 'traditional' users/illustrators?
Seeing as that hasn't changed for as long as I can remember... I imagine that it is annoying a lot of people. I don't know how you thought it would be good to change that outright without even phasing it out gradually or offering the original view as well. Terrible. Don't even dare tell me to draw my paths in illustrator. Worse still, the infinitely useless marquee tool keeps the original expanded view! So it's not even like it couldn't have been done. Just. Annoying.
Also the Hand tool is a right pain. Are you seriously telling me I can't scrub freely? Outside of the 'frame'?? That's retarded. Even if an imported layer is larger than my document bounds and the 'frame' I still can't even scrub outside of it?
I've been a loyal user of photoshop for over 10 years and this is the worst update I've seen in all that time. There are great things happening, with the content aware stuff and better GL processing etc etc. Sadly, tried and tested features are being wiped out as you try and turn photoshop into one giant DESIGN button.
Sorry for the massive rant. I had real high hopes for CS6 and to be honest, I'm moderately disappointed.
I couldn't figure out where on earth to post this as I couldn't find a feedback button in photoshop. Which may also be a great idea to consider.

Apologies for the triple post but this is still frustrating me.
I don't understand why Adobe would do something that slows down long-term Photoshop users so much!
When I am on the path selection tool, the little check mark to deselect all paths is gone. Why? It was one tiny button that didn't even add clutter and was impecably useful.
Now, if I'm trying to add to my path or subtract from a path, the minute I switch my pen to this mode, the whole shape layer abides by that rule. So my existing path is inverted if I select subtract, etc.
Why does the pen tool now control paths in the same way as the path selection tool? I thought that was the ENTIRE POINT of the path selection tool. For selecting and modifying a paths properties. Any modifiers applied to the pen should be strictly for once you draw with the pen? Again. More clicks, more undos and more workarounds to figure out. All of which seem much slower and more convoluted than every previous version of the CS.
Also, where have the transform controls gone from the path selection tool? Once again, another click. Right click > free transform. Who thought that would be smart? Works for some but not me for a second.
These bulky, childish cursors are annoying some of my colleagues too. Even precise cursors are now massive. Where have sleek, 1px thick cursors gone? Why have we got these chunky horible things that look like they're from the Sims or something?? I'm not playing a videogame. I'm working. I feel like a school child with these hilariously over-sized pointers.
It's not even like a fix for these issues is needed. Simply revert back to the method which was practical and useful? With some of the new additions like the rubber band and illustrator style-stroke... All great stuff, if applied to the *real* path tool. Not this lame excuse of one. Why did you got screwing with what WAS one of the most versatile tools in photoshop? I can only hope this is the first stage of a major upgrade in this tool.

  • Tiger & PS CS2&3 image redraw with hand tool.

Having aproblem with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and 3 after I up graded to Mac OSX Tiger. Currently, I am on version 10.4.8.
Does anybody know how to fix image redraw problem I am experiencing?
It does not happen every time, but it happens enough to be very hard to work.
When navigating through an image with space bar pressed down (hand tool,) Image does not redraw smoothly. It becomes over-wrapped with itself many times. Also, your cursor will leave foot prints over the image just by moving cursor over the image.
I am on PSCS 3 beta now but also happened on CS2. It is also happening on 2 machines, so I don't think it is a graphic card or hardware problem.
    Thanks,

  • Zoom mode hand tool

When I'm in zoom mode, is there a way to scroll the image using a hand tool instead of moving that tiny crop box?

Just click spacebar and the cursor will change to the wellknown hand and you’re ready to scroll

  • PS CS4 - Hand tool/panning lag after updating OS to Mavericks

I'm on an iMac, from early 2009. With a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory. I'm using Photoshop CS4, and ever since my upgrade to Mavericks the hand tool has a bad lag to it. I've tried updating Java runtime, disabling/enabling OpenGL Drawing, flick panning with no luck. What's happening? I'd really prefer not to reinstall Photoshop, but it's slowing my work down so much that I'm almost willing.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • The Hand Tool has stopped working

I've noticed something odd recently. My mouse has been behaving weirdly. First of all, for about a week, mouse response in Logic was jerky and sluggish. Not enough for it to be a real issue, but annoying enough, what with all the crashing and all. That's stopped now, but something else has taken its place:
The hand tool no longer moves or copies channel-strip inserts or I/O settings from one strip to the other. I just get the standard click menu. The cursor turns into a hand, it just doesn't work. Also, when double-clicking on an insert or AU object sometimes doesn't open it, it just brings up the menu.
I've tried theree different mice and messed with my mouse settings in sys prefs but it still doesn't work!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have this problem across the suite -- in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Strangely, the problem turned out to be some kind of conflict with the Chrome browser. When I quite Chrome, the spacebar starts working properly again.
I've seen people saying that the same thing has happened with Firefox, so it might be a more general bug with the system accessing the web while Adobe apps are running. It seems to happen in particular when I am using Gmail or any site that uses a lot of AJAX (Twitter seems to trigger it as well) and is constantly refreshing in the background, but that may just be a coincidence.
    Hope this helps!

  • Hand tool 'locked'

Hi all, I have a simple problem:
In Photoshop CS3, the hand tool is the only tool I can now use: no matter what tool I click, the hand tool stays, nothing else happens. I tried restarting Photoshop and that didn't work. Any ideas?
    Thanks heaps!
    Brad

    Stuck space bar?
Try tapping it a couple times to unstick it.
Happens to me too. I'd like to take my keyboard apart and clean itjust because it really needs it (ashes, eyelashes, cat hairs, dust, crumbs, etc), but it's a particularly tough one to disassemble.
Now, having said that, I DO think there's something in the software (I'm using PS CS2 on Mac)that causes the "Hand Tool" to stick, because it'll happen in PS (tapping the space bar fixes it), but I've never seen a long stream of repeating spaces being generated in any other app where I type text, for example.

  • Hand Tool Automatically switches to Select Tool

When viewing a PDF in Acrobat X, the Hand Tool (pan) is available as long as the cursor is moving.  When I stop moving the cursor, the Hand Tool switches to the Select Tool without me doing anything.  I run a Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Dell Precision computer.

What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Sounds like maybe you have Quick Mask enabled.
Click on the Quick Mask button toward the bottom of the toolbox to get out of Quick Mask mode.

  • Hand Tool

I am using Fireworks CS4 and the hand tool will not go away
if anyone knows what I am doing wrong let me know.... Thanks in
    advance...

Thanks!  I'll try it if it happens again!
    half hour later . . .
Okay everyone . . .  the people suggesting tapping the space bar are correct.  When the tool sticks as the hand, tap the space bar, and that clears it.
I am not convinced that the keyboard is the problem.  Rather, I think that there is something in the program that causes the hand tool to appear and then stick, and the space bar clears it.  Here's why:
FYI - I said what follows, above; but I'll repeat here for clarity:
To try to rule out issues on my end, I . . .
    1) re-Ghosted my PC back to a pristine image (then DL & installed all updates) to try to rule out system software issues
    2) did Symantec disk check to try to rule out disk errors
    3) DL Photoshop from Adobe website all over again (to try to ensure error-free file); install and reboot
    4) DL Photoshop update; install and reboot
It doesn't get much cleaner than that.  In addition, my keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II) is pretty new.
Here ias where the hand tool issue has appeared repeatedly for me:
I used photoshop for a couple of hours doing simple layers, cropping, and text with effects without problems.  But then, I closed the program and opened it up again to do something more complex.  The hand-tool issue appeared at the same point it did before I went through all this:
I had some photos that I wanted to use as fill for shapes on the masked layer below the group . . .
    1. I grouped 6 layers
    2. ctrl-click the masked layer below the group, then clicked on the group
    3. Choose layer>layer mask> reveal selection (puts the grouped photos into the shapes in layer below)
And this is where the hand appears--not every timwe, but a few times.  I was also frequently going back and forth between a You Tube viseo and Photoshop when the hand appeared.
Anyway, tapping the sapce bar seems to resolve it.
    Cheers.
    mike

  • Issues with Photoshop CS4 and Spacebar/Hand tool

I am pretty sure this is not the other hand tool problem I have read about. What happens is when I want to move around a document I click the spacebar to get the hand tool, in previous versions of PS i could do this and when I let go of the spacebar the cursor goes back to the previous tool I was using. In cs4 it doesn't go back to the previous tool unless I hit the spacebar again. This also hinders my zooming in and zooming out, I have to click the space bar let go and then click either the ctrl or alt button alone to zoom. It used to be that i could hit space+ctrl and let go and it would go to the previous tool.
I have PS cs4 on WinXp. I have checked every place i could in the prefs and in the keyboard shortcuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is really hindering my workflow.

    elpipetuanis wrote:
That is a good idea, but the keyboard is fairly new and I didn't have a problem with this on cs3 last week with the same keyboard.
It could have just become noticeable!
Other than that you could experiment with different setting in OpenGL or look at keyboard repeat rate in the Control Panel applet.
