PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue

  Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files.  I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3  error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all.  What am I doing wrong?

Hey,
Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs  with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right?    Am I missing anything.   here?    Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work?   Will I be at any disadvantage.   Am I missing anything.   here?

Thanks ssprengel for the suggestions and running a side by side yourself. I went through all my settings and applied your suggestions and did a side by side each time. I even uninstalled the entire creative suite on my system then reinstalled and updated and I still get the same outcome. It was fine yesterday with the previous version of ACR. It seems like the updated version is not showing the image preview in any color space. When I switch the color space in the workflow options the histogram changes but it doesn't seem to affect the preview window. And yes the preview button was checked on it was just when I was using the screen grab tool in windows it took focus away from the application so that is why the settings appear grayed out. I have attached more screen grabs below illustrating all my settings. Also here is some system info if anyone out there has a similar setup and would be willing to test.

  • When is camera raw going to support the Nikon D810? I have downloaded the beta version and I can open in camera raw but it not open in PS.

We have just released the final versions of ACR 8.6 and also Lightroom 5.6 tonight. You can now open all your NEF files from Nikon D810 in both applications.

  • When will a camera raw plugin beavailable for the Nikon D810

I recently purchased a Nikon D810 but can not see the images when I download them to either Lightroom or Photoshop.  I am told I need a new plug-in. When will onebe available?

    Check out this:
Re: Lightroom 5 and Nikon D810
There is a solution. Just install camera raw 8.6 to get support in Photoshop. Use dng converter 8.6 to convert the nef files to dng and import those in Lightroom if you want to use Lightroom to edit the raw files. It doesn't support the small "raw" files that the D810 generates but those are a complete and utter joke anyway and nobody should be using those, not even to save space.
    >Update: I've just counted: there are 22 separate threads started in the last week asking why LR doesn't support the D810 and when will it be updated!
That must be a record. I don't think I have ever seen it as bad as with this camera. It must be incredibly popular or perhaps the change in the forum software is making it hard for people to peer down a few lines to see what has been posted already (I am being generous ;-) )

  • I have Photoshop CS2 vsn 9.0 with the Camera Raw 3.7 update and the Digital Negative Converter.  I cannot open any RAW files. Does the fact that I've opened them in Lightroom 5.0 before make a difference?

When I try to open the RAW file (CR2) from the Photoshop application or from the Bridge (even while holding down the shift key) I get a message saying it's not the right kind of file. When I try to convert using the converter, it won't recognize the files.

Which operating system are you using?
Which camera are the camera raw files from?
Did you convert the files to dng using lightroom or the standalone dng converter?
If using the standalone dng converter, which version?
In the dng converter did you try setting the Compatibility for Camera Raw 2.4 and later
    (Preferences>Compatibility)
You should also be able to send the files from lightroom to cs2 without converting to dng, either by using Photo>Edit In>Photoshop or setting cs2 as an external editor in the lightroom preferences

  • Camera Raw Version 5.7 and Nikon D800E

Hi everyone,  So with my new Nikon camera (D800E), I now realize that I can do nothing in CS4 with my RAW files. As my current version of Camera Raw is only 5.7 for it. Will I have to upgrade my version to at least CS5 with ACR 6.7 minimum? Maybe go with CS6?  Regards,  Jason Gaughan

The reason you can’t read the D800E raws in an old ACR plug-in is because that old ACR plug-in doesn’t know the camera parameters that are embedded in the raw converter.  What the DNG Converter does is takes the original raw data and adds the Adobe-camera parameters and packages everything in a DNG file per the DNG standard.  That DNG contains the raw data plus enough information for older ACR plug-ins to convert the data, as long as you set the compatibility options in the DNG Converter to create the DNG for that age of plug-in.
If you don’t delete your original files, then yes, the DNG Converter will create files that are also relatively similar in size to the NEFs, although they could be smaller or larger depending on what size of preview you embed an if the NEF compression is better than the DNG compression.
Lightroom is good.  Check out the LR 5.2 update and run in 30-day trial mode to make sure it is compatible with your computer.  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
You can always do Edit in Elements with LR Adjustments from within LR to get the file over into PSE for the final edits.

  • What ver. of CS3 Camera Raw will work with the Nikon D5000?

Just upgraded my Nikon D100 with a D5000. Now PSCS3 will not reconize my raw images. Is there anything I can do other than spend money on a new version on PS?

There is not, nor will there ever be, a version of Camera Raw for CS3 that will open your Nikon NEF files directly.  It will be necessary for you to download the latest DNG converter and create DNG (Digital Negative) copies of your raw files.  Then you will be able to open those DNG files with ACR in Photoshop CS3.  The last version of camera raw that was created for Photoshop CS3 was version 4.6.

  • CS5 (camera raw 8.7.1) not reading Nikon d810 NEF files

I just purchased Nikon d810. I have CS5. All updates are current and I've downloaded Camera Raw 8.7.1 but Photoshop/Bridge still can not read NEF files. What am I doing wrong?

If you have Windows, go into the Control Panel > All Items > Autoplay
Uncheck Autoplay (I keep it off because I don't want Windows doing anything automatically, I like to make that decision).
Next to the Pictures category, set the drop-down menu to "Take no Action".
Then when you insert a SD card, Bridge would see it under "Computer", but you would have to double-click to open it, and go to the folder that has the pictures.
One warning: Don't do any processing off an SD card. Make copies and put them in a folder on your hard drive. Too much can go wrong with flash memory and it's unwise to work off it or an external drive. You want backups of your valued photos.
I don't think Bridge CS5 auto-imports Photos from SD cards, so you are safe there.

  • V1.3 and Nikon D100 NEF files - Not so good!

I still use a Nikon D100 for underwater work. I recently updated from Lightroom 1.1 to 1.3 and discovered some very strange results when working with NEF files generated by my D100. There is a dark magenta cast overlaid on every file. My D200 NEF files on the other hand look fine. I went back to Lightroom v1.2 and the problem is gone. I called support and they had the same problem on their end. I realize the Nikon D100 is quickly going the way of the Dodo bird but you would think Adobe would have at least tested this still common raw file format before releasing the updated build.
In any event, just a word of caution. If you still work with D100 NEF files I'd suggest not upgrading to 1.3.

Scott - you are experiencing the same confusion that I was. Here is what I did:
    1. Google "download dng 4.2" - it should take you to Adobe's site where you can download the converter;
    2. Create a folder in Lightroom under the folder where your compressed D100 NEFs - the magenta ones - are located; I titled mine "DNG Conversions";
    3. In the DNG converter choose the source folder with the magentaized NEFS and the destination folder as the one you set up in step 2 above, and then "Convert";
    4. When the conversion is complete, go into Lightroom, right-click the new folder and synchronize it. All of the new DNG files should appear in the "import" window. Once the new DNGs are imported (i.e., the new folder is synched), you should be able to work with them in Lightroom normally, magenta free.
I'm a novice user of Lightroom and had never done anything with the DNG converter...as such was really confused - didn't realize it meant you had to take the conversion process outside of Lightroom and then re-import the new images. Hope this helps. Best -
    Bill

  • Nikon D810 NEF files and Lightroom 4

I just got a Nikon 810 -- and is it true it's not supported by Lightroom 4?

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The D810 was first supported in Lightroom 5.6 so, if you want to import D810 Raw files into Lightroom, you'll have to pay to upgrade to Lightroom 5, if your computer can run it.
Support for new cameras is never retrospectively added to older versions of Lightroom.
Your other (free) option is to download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all D810 Raw files to DNG format then import the DNGs into Lightroom 4

  • Photoshop CS3 Camera Raw Update: unable to open Nikon D5200 Raw files

I have a Nikon D5200, so I cannot view my raw files (.NEF) files in photoshop CS3 and I downloaded the Camera Raw 4.6 update, and installed it using the manual installation instructions found here: Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Camera Raw 4.6 update. After restarting photoshop and attempting to open a .NEF file, I still receive the error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document. I have also tried previous updates (4.5 and 4.4.1) and they have also not worked. How can I fix this?

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The D5200 is supported in Camera Raw 7.3 and later. Older versions of Camera Raw cannot read D5200 Raw files.
Raw 7.3 is only compatible with CS6, CC or CC 2014
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
So you'll never be able to open Raw D5200 files in CS3.
Why doesn’t my version of Photoshop or Lightroom support my camera?
Choices: buy CS6 or join the Cloud.
Free alternative: download the Adobe DNG converter, convert all D5200 Raw files to DNGs then open the DNGs in CS3
