PS CS3: cannot select object in layer with keystroke

Hello. I've looked in various places and cannot find the answer to my question; perhaps I'm not asking using the proper description. I hope someone here in this forum understands and can help.
In past versions of PS I've been able to select the object in a layer by hitting control and clicking on the layer. I would get the marching ants and then could use that selection by creating a new layer for it and then manipulate it as I desire. Now it looks like the stroke causes linking to turn on and off.
I very much liked being able to select the object in a layer and used it quite often in my designing. I still want to use it, but how? Does anyone know if this function has been preserved and how do I access it?
Thanks VERY MUCH. -Kat

Well, fabulous. You think I would have figured that out...
Thank you, Ed.

  • Noob Question 1: Selecting Objects On Layer Like CorelDraw?

    Hi,
    I'm moving from CorelDraw. (I know this makes a lot of people laugh, but it's a great program. I'm moving to Adobe just because the pre-press house we're using demands it.
    Anyhoo... In CorelDraw, there is a button one use to see in a sort of 'tree view' all the objects on a given layer. When you click on the layer, it opens the tree so you see the objects that belong there. This makes it -super- easy to select objects that are deep down/partially hidden.
    Is there anything like this in InDesign? Sometimes it's kinda hard to grab a particular object, especially when there are lots of things on top of one another.
    Ideas?
    TIA,
    ---JC

    No, nothing like that yet. You'll find that in Illustrator and it a requested feature for InDesign so you might just want to chime in here:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
    That said, you can simply ctrl/cmd click to click down through a stack of objects.

  • Cannot select objects in Adobe Fireworks

    I suddenly could not select objects in Adobe Fireworks on my MacBook Pro. I was using a Magic Mouse.
    I replace the mouse, but the problem persisted — it wasn't the mouse
    I restarted Fireworks, but the problem persisted — it wasn't Fireworks
    I searched the Adobe community and found this thread
    One user stated that his Spotify was causing the problem. I didn't use spotify but I did just install the Radia app on my machine. It is an app that plays Pandora.
    I closed the Radia music app (thinking it similar to Spotify) and the mouse immediately started working again.
    If you have this problem. Check for other software causing an issue; specifically ones that have a home up in your task bar.

    Radia has replied to my support request.
    "Hi,
    Radia binds your Mac’s media key to enable you control it convenient and fast. Try disabling the binding to see if the problem goes away:
    open Radia window > click on the gear icon > select Preferences… > uncheck Bind Media Key"
    Restart both your design program and Radia and you should be good to go!

    1) Whenever you see a message from Java,
    JavaWS, or an application saying words the the
    effect of 'cannot find..', try checking the URL of the
    resource in a browser. If a browser comes
    up '404' (not found), then the Java tool or app.
    will be unable to access it either.
    That is the first and fundamental problem with that
    JNLP. The DOCTYPE element is not strictly needed
    in a JNLP, and I would recommend removing it entirely
    rather than try and hunt down any NetBeans DTD.
    With the way NB writes JNLP's, I would not trust
    a DTD written or controlled by them, in any case.
    App JNLP File
    ===========OK.. I recommend replacing the current JNLP
    with the one below, here is a summary of the
    changes I made..
    - removed DOCTYPE line with reference to '404' DTD
    - compacted resource elements, removing empty attributes
    - changed ztest17.jar to main='true'
    - removed redundant 'download="eager"' attributes as well
    as main="false" and version="" from swing-layout.. jar element
    - removed broken(?) <icon> element and empty <description>
    - changed homepage href to relative
    Some of them are guesses, but I'd give it a 90%+
    chance of working, if written like this.

  • Cannot select object sent to back

    If I make a rectangular, fixed object, select it, and choose Send Backward or Send to Back, I can no longer select it.
    Is there something I'm not understanding about how to re-select that object?
    -Michael

    Hello Michael,
    as I know this is not documented in the Pages manual. I haven't read the manual (nor version 1 neither version 2) in it's entirety, and I think this is such kind of "feature" the developers are thinking of as a must known one. But in my opinion this counts only for users with experiences in (most) vector image editing and not for the casual/normal user who is just discovering the Pages universe.
    But, as I use to write in such situations, for this kind of questions and other problems this wonderful discussion board exists

  • Selecting a Graphic Layer with Apple Script

    I'm trying to build on a very helpful post by sstanleyau showing how to choose different layers in a placed PSD or PDF. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in my test script. It seems so simple …
    Here's what the script should do after an image is placed in a text frame:
    1. "Read" the names of each of the graphic layers in the placed graphic.
    2. If one of the names contains a string, then
    3. Turn current visibility of that layer on
    4. Turn the visibility of every other layer off.
    However, my script seems to come up with a different result each time I run it and often fails to "find" a layer that I know is there. Is it possible that my script can't access the name of a graphic layer if its visibility is set to off?
    Here's why I've got
    --before running, user selects a test frame containing a placed PDF with multiple layers named blue, red and green.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
    set theFrame to item 1 of selection
    set glOptions to graphic layer options of graphic 1 of theFrame
    set theName to text of "blue"
    repeat with z from 1 to count of graphic layers in glOptions
    if name of graphic layer z of glOptions contains theName then
    repeat with d from 1 to count of graphic layers in glOptions
    if current visibility of graphic layer d of glOptions ≠ false then
    set current visibility of graphic layer d of glOptions to false
    end if
    end repeat
    if current visibility of graphic layer d of glOptions = false then
    set current visibility of graphic layer z of glOptions to true
    end if
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell

    Im NOT sure if you have just made this a little over complicated… This works just fine for me. Tested with about a dozen psd layers…
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    tell active document
    tell rectangle 1
    tell graphic 1
    tell graphic layer options
    set GLC to count of graphic layers
    repeat with i from 1 to GLC
    if name of graphic layer i ≠ "Blue" then
    set current visibility of graphic layer i to false
    else
    set current visibility of graphic layer i to true
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    This variant also works as I would have expected too… Retaining visibility from a list…
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    tell active document
    tell rectangle 1
    tell graphic 1
    tell graphic layer options
    set On_List to {"Red", "Aqua", "Orange"}
    set GLC to count of graphic layers
    repeat with i from 1 to GLC
    if name of graphic layer i is not in On_List then
    set current visibility of graphic layer i to false
    else
    set current visibility of graphic layer i to true
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell

  • DW cannot convert object tag created with swfObject 2

    I have a Flash video on static html page 'embedded' using the swfObject 2 method. When I open the page in DW CS3 I get this error message:
    "this page contains <object> tags that may not work properly in the most recent versions of IE. DM cannot convert the <object> tag."
    The page plays the video both local system and on the server.
    this test page is here: http://www.rjdutton.com/about_movSWF2.html
    Relevant source code is:
    --> <object classid=   ..... etc and
    --> <object type=
    since that's the only code on the test page that references an object tag.
    The embedded Flash I have on the site (home page & about us page) now are embedded using <embed> via Flash CS3 (AC_Run active content), but that method does not validate. the swfObject 2 method validates.
    I work on a Mac. Could someone check the page on IE Win and see if the video runs?
    Can I safely ignore the Dreamweaver 'error' message?
    Thank you -- Susan

    I believe you won't have any problems ignoring the message.

  • Keyboard accessibility, Captivate 8 - I cannot select multiple choice options with tab / enter.

    It seems that most information I can find is that it's a standard feature, and if you have the accessibility checkbox selected then it should work.  I'm viewing my quiz in HTML5 Chrome.  Tabs do not enter the answers, am I missing something obvious?

    I don't know if you resolved this yet... but I had the same problem. Eventually I realized that you have to TAB - SPACE BAR on the quiz slides. With the drop downs for filling in the blanks, it is TAB to, SPACE BAR, UP DOWN ARROW KEYS, ENTER. I am having to put instructions on the slide. Also, I'm having a nightmare with the tabbing on quiz slides, because for some reason it tabs on EVERYTHING on the slide, not just the interactive options. It even tabs the slide itself. I can't fix it... I've tried everything. I have it all perfect on everything but the quiz slides, then it loses focus. Also, for the fill in the blank quiz slides, it tabs to the selections all over the place. First it goes to question 1, then 6 then 3, then 2... and so on. As these don't show up in the tabable order feature, I can't fix that either.
    Sorry I just probably made it worse for you... but if you know of a fix for these other tabbing issues with quiz slides, please let me know.

    Check this:
    SQL> create view my_view as select rowid rd from dual;
    View created.
    SQL> select * from my_view;
    RD
    AAAACsAABAAAAGiAAA
    SQL> select * from my_view where rd = 'AAAACsAABAAAAGiAAA';
    RD

    Create view Test_Data as
    Select t.column1, t.column2, t.rowid rd from table1 t

  • Why can't I select and move guides with selection tools?

    I'm using Illustrator CC and I cannot select and move guides with the selection tools. The guides are not locked. I can select the guides in the Layers Panel, but I can only move with the arrow keys. I can also "Release" the guides once they are selected in the Layers Panel, but I still cannot move them with the mouse - only the arrow key.
    Summary of Problem:
    Guides are not locked.
    Some guides can only be moved when they are selected in the Layer Panels and when using the arrow keys
    Non-selectable Guides can be "Released" but only altered in color and line weight and still only moved with the arrow keys.
    Desired Outcome:
    I want to be able to move all guides using the mouse for greater accuracy vs the arrow keys.
    Thank you for your help.

    Channing, anotherhead,
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Zoom-in tool and selected objects

    Hi there,
    I am wondering about the possibility of making the zoom-in tool directs to the selected Object or Layer, and how that increase the accessibility with the shortcuts like CTRL+(+).
    Regards,

    Hi,
    you should make "selection objects" which represent your rect.s.
    they could have a drawMe(Rectangle source, Rectangle dest) method which would be called in the rendering loop. While source represents the selected area of the orignal image and dest the destination aera which drawMe would actually draw the image into.
    Source would get set on mouse up after dragging, dest would be set after the click equal to your drawing area.
    I'm not sure about the actual image scaling but i think it can be done similar like that: http://www.rgagnon.com/javadetails/java-0243.html.
    You dhould definately have a look at javax.imageio.*;just some ideas

  • Error ORA-01446:cannot select ROWID  - Bug?

    Hi
    I am getting an error message in SQL Developer 3.0.04.34
    Error ORA-01446:cannot select ROWID from view with DISTINCT, GROUP BY, etc.
    (you can read the full details at http://www.techonthenet.com/oracle/errors/ora01446.php )
    when I create a view containing "DISTINCT" even though it doesn't have a rowid anywhere in the select.
    Is this a bug? The view seems to function well enough but sql developer itself seems to be struggling a bit.
    I have found accounts of similarish bugs on this site from about 2007 but relating to slightly different sets of circs, but if I am asking an old and obvious question then apologies in advance.
    C

    Hi C,
    Well, the question may be old (see at least: ORA-01446 error in SQL Developer 3EA4 but I doubt it's obvious.
    The simplest cases of create view ... as for the following selects
    select distinct deptno from dept;
    select deptno, count(*) employees from emp group by deptno;work fine in all the 2.x, 3.x releases in the object viewer data tab. Of course, running a select which includes a rowid on these views from a worksheet will fail as expected.
    In such situations a simple, reproducible test case is always nice but, at a minimum, please provide a listing of the broken code and a description of exactly how/where in SQL Developer the error occurs.
