PS CS3: trim bitmaps

I have a folder full of small monochrome bitmaps, shapes made up of black contiguous pixels on a white background. Is it possible in JS crop the image to the black shape, in other words, trim the surrounding white? (PhotoShop's trim doesn't work on bitmaps.)
Thanks,
Peter

Peter,
What is your intended use? You can convert your bitmaps to black on a transparent background, and Crop very closely to the black pixels, but then you will need to Save_As a format that supports Transparency. For a 2-bit image, GIF would probably work well, but PNG, or PSD would work too. Much would depend on how you will use these images, as one format might well be better, than others.
To turn the white pixels Transparent, just get your images into a Mode that will support a Transparent background, use the Magic Wand to select those, then Delete. You can Crop, at any time, in tighter on your black pixels.
Hope that helps, but your later use might dictate some things.

  • PS CS3: Trim layer content that overhangs layer?

I have a large picture that a part of which I have on a layer. The image itself is much larger than the layer itself. So when I chose transform, the edge marks/lines are way off the layer screen. I need to drag these layers to a new PS file of the same size and I dont want to bring over the entire huge image layer. Is there a way to have PS inverse select all alyer content not on the layer itself and trim it?

Select all. Then image... crop (will trim all layers). Or just select all, copy and paste to new doc. Or, select all, shift drag that layer to new doc.

  • Trouble with Crop and Trim Marks in Illustrator CS3

    Hi,
I'm creating a print document (in Illustrator CS3, using Windows Vista) and sending to a professional printer who requires trim marks. I've created my document so that there is 0.125" trim area on all sides to bleed. Here is what I'm doing to create trim marks:
    Artboard is set at desired print size (5.5"x8.5") + 1/8" trim= 5.75"x8.75"
Object>Crop Area>Make This give me crop marks at the edge of my artboard
    then I do
Object>Crop Area>Release This allows me to change my crop marks to my desired, 0.125" size
    Then i do
Filter>Create>Crop Marks This shows me my crop marks exactly where I want them in a red retangle
then I save the file as a PDF and select the following settings:
    Press Quality
Marks and Bleeds: I select the "Trim Marks" box to print the trim marks
If I tell it to show bleeds, it only shows up on the top and bottom, not left and right, even though there is "0.125" in all fields.
(Although these have only showed up for me once, I cannot get it to show up again)
When I select "Save" and then view the file, the trim marks are there, but not were I specified them to be. They show up at the edge of the artboard.
When I change the Artboard to letter size (8.5x11), THEN the crop marks show up where they're supposed to be. Why is this happening???
    Any thoughts?? Thank you!

I can get crop marks by using the "Print" menu and printing to PDF. My question is: How do you handle bleeds when printing crop marks in the "Save" or "Print" stage? Aren't the crop marks placed at the file extents?

  • Beginner Illustrator CS3  Set Trim size and Live area

Our graphic designer is on vacation I need to submit this image to print as poster...I have the image but I need help how to set Trim size to 45" width and 67" height. Visual live area set to 43"wd x 64" ht DPI 150 at 100% saved into PDF. Please help how to do this in Illustrator CS3?
    Thank you very much!

    > Trim size to 45" width and 67" height.
File > Document setup. Make that the document size.
    > Visual live area set to 43"wd x 64" ht.
Just keep all important info (text, logo) within that area. 1 inch margins left and right, 1.5 inch margins top and bottom.
    > DPI 150
That's PPI, for Pixels Per Inch, not DPI. That's the minimum resolution for imported artwork, like scans or Photoshop files.
    > saved into PDF
File > Save A Copy. Choose ADobe PDF as the format and then Press Quality as the preset in the following window after you click Save. Unless the printer provided more specific requirements, which I doubt.

  • Image Trimming CS3?

I'm using InDesign CS3. I need to (over the internet) submit up to 22 spreads for a school yearbook. This needs to be submitted on a school internet connection (which means that we have horrible upload speeds).
Last year, we had software from our publisher which let us trim images down to where we need them (the size they are put in at, and trimmed to 300 DPI). This year, the software is not offered.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Right now we are using full size images, and each spread is about 100 MB. There's absolutely no way we can upload over two gigabytes of data through a school connection.
I couldn't find anything that could trim the images to what is used in the spread and to 300 DPI.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks for the answer, but unfortunately we have to submit the InDesign files so that they can add certain elements (e.g. dropping in portraits)

I want to change the bitmap of a shape (graphic symbol) by loading an external file (image file ex.jpeg)  and also want to keep aspect ratio. (say my shape size is 800X600 px and i want to load 1486x1020px image in that shape. So, it will keep aspect ratio and resize to 800x600.

Not entirely sure what you're looking for, but you use a Loader to load images at runtime. You can size them as you like by setting the width and height.

  • Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?

    Hi all,
I'm working in Illustrator 9 on Windows 7.
Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
I've imported a layer from Photoshop and I have a triangle path on a sub-layer of that placed bitmap layer that I'd like to select around outside of and then trim around the path on the imported bitmap layer to make that bitmap layer the shape of my triangle path.
But when I select "Inverse" it is trying to select other paths outside my triangle path, so it selects only the bitmap layer and leaves me to delete only that entire bitmap layer.
I want to select my path, then have it trim around the outside of the path on my placed bitmap layer.
    Thanks for any input,
    digi

    Hi Monika,
I was just writing back because that's what I figured.  But my wavy line paths were very labor intensive when I created them in Photoshop so I was trying to copy and paste or import those in to Illustrator, but with no success.
Years ago I was able to transfer paths created in Illustrator to Photoshop, but I don't remember ever doing the opposite.
When I try to copy those complex, perfect sine-wave paths from Photoshop, I eventually get the message, "Could not export to clipboard because rectangle is empty."  But actually I'm trying to copy the paths from a TIFF with a background layer made of the color waves, so I'm not sure about that message's accuracy... and anyway I'm trying to copy the paths, not the background layer.  I right-click on the path and select-copy, but it doesn't copy back in to Illustrator.
I've also tried "placing"/importing the sine-wave path, but it only places the background layer from the Photoshop TIFF.
I've also tried simply dragging and dropping the path from Photoshop to Illustrator, but no go.
Is there a way to import my sine-wave path from Photoshop to Illustrator?
    Thanks again,
    digi

  • CS3-Trouble with Transferred Trimmed Project

    Hello...
New problem; have not been able to find answer.
I need to cut a 20 minute SD video down to 10 minutes to share at a retreat for documentary filmmakers. The last interation of the video was on my editor's machine. Saved a trimmed project without previews to an external drive and then transferred the project to my computer.
The problem is that when I do changes, the renders are glacial. I timed one...2.5 minutes for 50 frames...and there was nothing fancy going on. When I save the project and reopen it, it shows rendering is needed again...some areas required rendering which were not changed.
Premiere seems to handle other projects ok. Crazy making...there is obviously something I do not understand about working with trimmed projects. My editor has a much newer and more powerful computer, but is running CS3 as well. (Running Win7.)
The computer is long in the tooth...but has always been fine in the past...and is fine with other projects. What's up? I know I need a new computer but this one should be able to handle this.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for that info. Sounds like things should work just fine.
The "lost Renders" often happens when one is using an external HDD to edit to/from, or a networked drive, but this does not seem to be your issue.
When I archive a Project (usually TO and external HDD), I will test that Project, prior to moving on. I have yet to encounter any issues, so long as my Assets are in the Project's folder hierarchy. I have run into issues, with Assets not being gathered, when the Assets are spread about. I encountered this with some SmartSound files, that were in a separate folder, since they were being used in about 22 separate Projects for that client. I learned to Copy those into the Project's folder structure, into Music sub-folders, even if that meant having 22 Copies on my system. That has been the ONLY issue, that I have had with archived Projects, using Project Manager, but do have to admit that other than my initial test, I have not revisited many over the years. Do not have any idea why the Render files are causing an issue, and also why the Projects are slowing down, as they are.
Hope that others will see what I am missing, and will have tips for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • CS3: Offline Media in Trimmed Project

Typically, I do a rough cut and then take it over to my editor and have him finish it.
When I took the project to him...most of the files were offline; he manually reconnected some and Premiere seemed to "figure out" where the files were and they were all connected.
Now I want to edit the project a bit more. I have a trimmed project from my editor and most of the files are offline. (Lower thirds and titles on online.) Is there a trick I am overlooking? They relink when relinked manually, but I don't want to do that for each clip...
    Have done a forum search.

Make sure that the drive letters are fixed. So Z on one PC has to be Z as well on the other PC. You can set that up in Disk Manager.

  • When placing a PDF created with Distiller, I only get Crop and Media as import options -- I need it to crop to the Trim! PLEASE HELP!

I'm having a MAJOR problem placing PDF files in InDesign CS4...
When I try to place a PDF that has been created in Distiller, the ONLY import options I can choose are CROP and MEDIA. I need it to crop to the TRIM, but that option is grayed out. The PDFs I'm trying to place were created in-house, and converted from Post Script files to PDFs using Distiller. We use PDF/X-1a equivalent settings when creating our PDFs.
If I export the file as a PDF and then try to place it into a CS4 file, I am able to select Trim as an option.
ALSO, if I open the Distiller PDF in Acrobat and then save it (without changing anything), I am able to select Trim as an option. A workaround I have found is to open all of the PDF files in Acrobat, save them to my desktop, and then save over the ones I need to place. Here's the problem with that: I work for a publishing company, and need to place hundreds of ads for each issue of our publications, and it adds a lot of time if I have to go and re-save everything just to be able to place all the ads.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I need to get this figured out so we can use CS4 for all of our publications again. -- We've gone back to using CS3 until I can get this figured out...
    - Valerie

    Steve,
Thanks for the reply, but my PDFs all have trim boxes on them. If I try to place the same PDF in InDesign CS3, it gives me Trim as an option. Also, if I open the PDF and save a copy to my desktop, I am able to select Trim as an option when placing the PDF, and I didn't change anything about it.
I've been trying to see if it's something with the Print Preset settings I'm using, but I can't find anything that seems like it would affect how InDesign would read the Trim area of the PDF.
I've attached 2 PDF files. One that was created with Distiller, and one that was exported from InDesign CS4. The Distiller one doesn't show Trim as an option in CS4, but the exported one does.... but they started out as the same ad.  Ugh!  Help me please!

  • Open .psd in FW CS3 and maintain paths?

I have a .psd file that when I open in FW CS3 it maintains all the layers just fine, but when I go to click on an object like a box it just shows as a bitmap rather than a path. So I can't edit the color or size.
    Any workaround?
    thanks much,
    Justin

really? That's a bummer. Seems like the whole concept of a suite isn't exactly working out if you loose the ability to edit content on platforms that are meant to stream line the process from design to web.
You need to remember that Fireworks and Dreamweaver came to Adobe through the merger with Macromedia. While FW and DW always worked well together, the products of the two companies were not designed to interoperate. Historically, one would design in Fireworks and code in Dreamweaver.
Since the merger, Adobe has been working to improve interoperability between Fireworks and Photoshop (and also Illustrator)  - mature applications with different approaches and code bases. There's a lot of code to revise and improve so that FW can read all PS effects and so that PS can read all FW layers. They're working on it.

  • How can I restore proper PDF exports from InDesign CS3 or CS5 in Snow Leopard?

I had no problems exporting PDFs from InDesign CS3 (on a Mac Pro running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard) until this past weekend, when all the fonts appeared bitmapped or thin and raggedy, and the images lost some color depth and contrast. When I copied the InDesign document to my MacBook Pro laptop, also running 10.6.4, the PDF emerged with its original quality. Calls to Adobe support referred me to documents concerning incompatibilities between InDesign and Snow Leopard. One of these documents was several pages long, but I could not print it from the Adobe website to my HP All-In-One Officejet, because one-third of the document was hidden under a white panel. This makes the document impractical for troubleshooting, because I don't have enough screen real estate (even on a 23-inch display) to keep the document open along with all the pages and dialogue boxes needed for reference. Back to phone and chat support, I was advised to upgrade my Creative Suite Premium CS3 to CS5 ($800!!!) and purchase the latest Acrobat Pro upgrade ($200), with no guarantee that this $1,000 cost would actually solve the problem. I did download the trial version of InDesign CS5, and it did NOT solve the problem. I'm also concerned that the problem did not exist until last weekend. Prior to that, my CS3 and Snow Leopard combination worked just fine. I then checked the forums and was dismayed at the variety of problems associated with PDF files, for which there seems to be no general fix. Meanwhile, I have hundreds of ads I'm supposed to be preparing and emailing as PDF proofs to businesses around the country. I have two books of 120 and 256 pages that need to be submitted to printers in PDF format with all kinds of fonts and image files belonging to my clients. The last time I submitted a book to a printer via email, the job went perfectly. This time, and next, it's obvious I won't be able to send PDFs at all! If that's the case, my 27-year-old directory business will be unable to absorb the expenses necessary to start all over with new computers and software, and I will be out of business. Period. So-- does anyone have a way to fix this? I would surely be grateful.
    David Henderson

I'm on a local network, built on Apple's Airport Extreme. but I'm the only computer user on it. I use it for transferring files between the desktop computer (Apple Mac Pro) and laptop (Apple MacBook Pro) and, occasionally, to print from the laptop to a Xerox Phaser printer.
About a year ago, I added an Apple Airport Express to the network, allowing me to play iTunes music from the laptop through a Panasonic BluRay player connected to a home theatre sound system. No problems of this nature appeared with that installation.
About four months ago, we connected a DirecTV satellite receiver system to the D-Link router that carries wired network service from the desktop computer to the Xerox printer. The satellite TV system includes a series of modems that allows DVR recordings to be accessed and played from any of the TVs in the house. (As you would now perceive, I run my publishing business from my home). However, this set-up has been functioning for about four months, and I did not encounter the PDF problem until last weekend.
    Now -- about the fonts.
Because of the many ads that I publish from various sponsors, it is possible that different versions of the same fonts have invaded my system. In the "missing font" alerts I get, InDesign frequently is seeking TT or T1 versions, which I replace with Adobe fonts when possible. Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium included a fairly large collection, which it keeps in one folder.  The Apple OS also includes a bunch in a separate font management folder; and there are carry-over fonts that came with the business when I acquired it 10 years ago. Some of those fonts may go back 25 years to the book's inception. However, in the past several years, I have generally rebuilt all the ads that appear in my publications, substituting newer versions of fonts. Hence, the preflight program has been able to locate and include all the necessary fonts in the packages that go to the printers.
Once again, I have been able to export good PDF files for all the varieties of ads and books included in my system, until last weekend. One of the documents is built entirely with Helvetica Narrow, for which I have only one version.. Another document consists mainly of Times, and there are 3 or 4 versions of that font in the system; but the version contained in the document has not changed from when it exported properly.
So... I guess the complexities involved in the network and/or fonts could be part of the problem, as you suggest, but golly -- I hope not. The last thing I want to do is disrupt and rebuild the network or font collections. The font situation especially would set back production for months if not years, because so many individual ads and off-site clients would be involved in the process.
I'm sorry if I provided more details than you expected. I didn't mean to take so much of your time.
    Thank you.

  • InDesign CS3 pstopdffilter Printing Error on Intel Mac

I'm having a problem printing in InDesign, now that I've upgraded to CS3. I've uninstalled all Adobe products and reinstalled, and I was able to print, but had a printer error on another printer, and now I am having the same "pstopdffilter" error as before. I'd rather not have to keep un-installing and re-installing to fix it. Is there any thing else I can do?
It is a Intel iMac, running OS X (10.4.9). Haven't had this problem with our older G4 and CS3.
    Any suggestions?

If the same printer works as expected printing from the same application on a newer version of the operating system, then it sounds like the necessary solution is to upgrade the operating system. InDesign, along with other Adobe Graphics Manager (AGM) Print clients (Illustrator CS3+ and Acrobat 9+), tend to use Apple's print interfaces in ways that are more complicated than most other applications. So you may see a problem only in InDesign, but the issue may be addressed by changes in the OS print architecture. In addition, specific printers interact with the OS print architecture differently. Some printers still in use do not use CUPS-based drivers, thus requiring an additional translation layer. It's all very complicated</understandment>.
Also, printers that are identified as PostScript devices will not allow the Print as Bitmap option to be chosen. That function uses the Mac non-PS print methods.
    Sincerely,
    Matthew

  • Reinstalling CS3 Master Collection on Vista x64

CS3 has worked fine for me up until I did some major Windows updates (mainly for MS Office 2007) on 4/29/09.  Premiere Pro gave me the "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Premiere to be shut down. We will attempt to save your current project" error.  And After Effects wouldn't load (but would show up in Task Manager).
So I updated my graphics card and mobo.  Then I tried all the Adobe Licensing Troubleshooting tricks and other suggestions from all over the web.  Now I get the lovely "You cannot use this product at this time. you must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your it administrator or adobe customer support for help."  Every program gives that error.  If I don't get the error (like in Bridge), Windows tells me the program crashed after closing it.
I also UNinstalled a whole bunch of programs (2 games, misc converters, other junk).  I figure I'm going to re-install the whole CS3 bundle OVER the Windows Updates and uninstalled programs.  First, though, I'm going to save important things like PS brushes and actions.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I go smashing my current installation?
Do you think I would be just fine installing directly from the installation disks instead of copying the disks to the hard drive like I did originally?
Will there be a problem with Licensing since I can't deactivate it now (the programs won't open)?
What do I need to do to COMPLETELY remove everything Adobe before installing anew?
    Thanks a bunch.

    Vista Ultimate 64-bit

    Peter,
Thanks for the insight.  I'm going to take the risk and wipe CS3 off my hard drive.  I don't know if it's the right thing to do, but the latest Windows update was an update that was undoable (in other words, it told me after this update that I could not undo it).  So, in that sense - reinstalling CS3 might be the only thing to do.
Both Microsoft Office AND Adobe are important to my work - I have 8 email accounts coming and going in Outlook, use Excel for my billing, and Onenote for sensitive client information (password protected).  So I don't think I could forfeit Office.
I've done every Vista update as far as I can remember (the important ones - not the extras like games and language packs), and I've been just fine.  I believe the combination of uninstalling a bunch of programs AND major Vista updates caused my problem.  I'm also now having a problem with corrupted Tahoma fonts in Outlook menus and reminders (they look like bitmap fonts - very large and pixelated).
If this re-installation of CS3 doesn't work, then I may end up re-installing Vista altogether.  But with everything I have on my computer and all the customization of the interfaces between programs I've done, I think it would take about 10 years off of my life.  Not to mention the time wasted and angry clients waiting for their work to be done.
Thanks for the CS3Clean Script info.  I'll be running it at level 2 after I uninstall CS3.
I couldn't find any of my PS Actions or Brushes (which was all I really needed to backup), but they weren't amazing in any way.  So I'll just make them again as I go along.
I'll remember that tip about only installing important updates next time.
Thanks again Peter - I really appreciate it.
