PS CS4 hanging up

Hi all,
I am having an issue with my Photoshop CS4 version 11.0.2
I am running it in a Macintosh environment. Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 12 GB ram. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8, the scratch disk is set to an empty partition on an external LaCie firewire 800 drive.
I have been running Photoshop in this way for quite a while and just recently started developing a problem. The problem is that, intermittently, during some retouching, PS will hang up and I will get the dreaded spinning beach ball for several minutes before it finally completes the action. I have my OS and applications on a separate internal hard drive and noticed a lot of chattering coming from the drive lately (indicating some fragmentation). So I took a newly initialized drive and did a clean install or Snow Leopard and migrated the apps and other info from my other drive. This hasn't seemed to have helped as I am still getting PS hanging up intermittently with the spinning beach ball. Could it be somehow that PS is not recognizing the ram in some instances? I checked my ram and system profiler indicates that all the chips are good. None of my other processor intense apps are having this problem. I'm really stuck here and have a good 8 hours of retouching sitting in front of me.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Dennis

Not sure exactly what you are saying, but Adobe applications realy, really need to be in the root level Applications folder on the same volume where the OS resides, in other words on your boot volume.

Aaah!  All bets are off.  "Migrating" applications brings nothing but grief.  Install them fresh from the original media.

  • Media Encoder CS4 hangs when opening large XDCAM HD MXF files

I am having a problem with Media Encoder CS4 hanging consistently when importing large (18GB) XDCAM HD (25mbps, MPE-2 HD) MXF files.  Smaller files are not a problem.  This is on a soupped up system, HP XW8600 Workstation / Windows Vista Pro.  The same files work fine in After Effect CS4.
Any idea what could cause this?
    Thanks.

Yes, I did.  Thanks for the tip though.

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 Hangs and whole system goes down.

Adobe Bridge CS4 Hangs and whole system goes down.
This is happening when I just finished edition RAW files in ACR and hit DONE, right after that a Bridge hangs, Cannot open Explorer, PC functions are down, cannot start anything, cannot stop Bridge process, cannot properly restart. Only holding power button shuts donw PC forcefylly.
I happens once per 10 edits of RAW files and super annoying.
    Pleeeeease help!

No wonder I think this is Bridge.
That is indeed a tempting thought, have you already tried the refresh preferences for Bridge using ctrl key pressed down while restarting Bridge?
But Bridge is very critical in reacting on odd system behavior, so also keep the advice of Station-Two in mind. On a Mac repairing permissions often solves problems, don't know the PC equivalent of this.

  • CS4  hang after using Nik Sharpener   - on Snow Leopard

    Hello everyone,
coming from Windows to MAC - to avoid trouble - I see it is not trouble free ... ??    While using the Nik Complete collection filters, all filters work fine with CS4 - except Nik Sharpener.  It looks to me that the Filter works OK, one can use it with its user interface and after hitting " Execute" the filters works and needs to give the results to CS4 .... <--- this step does not work.  It takes a while and then  CS4 does not react anymore and I must kill the process.  I tried this with some of my pictures, it is NOT related to the size of t files . The hang comes with small files as well as with big files.  I can  - sometimes - use it and it works fine, but this is only in rare cases. Theres is no difference wetherI tun other programs like Bridge or Capture One at the same time or not - CS4 hangs come in any case.
Has anyone observed the same issues and knows what the root cause might be?  Adobe support sent me a list what I should do. I tried some things, but I'm new on MAC and do not know the OS that good . I'm not able to follow all these steps. The Mac is a Mac Pro with 10 GB RAM. There should not be an issue with the RAM for CS4. The OS is Snow Leopard with the newest patches. Technically the Mac has no hardware issues or any other strange behavior - its is only this point that does not work
THANKS a lot for your help
    Kind regards,
    Hartmut

    Hello Chris,
I have the newest version downloaded incl. all available patches.  But I will in addition to this post this question as well to NIK support, because I cannot see where this hang starts to happen - still in t plugin or already in CS4 . Nevertheless, I assume tis should be based on any configuration  because CS4 is a mature software and the Sharpener plugin also --- such basic bugs should no more be available - is my assumption.  Therefore I thought someone might have had the same issue and knows the solution.
    Thanks, kind regards,
    Hartmut

Most likely the problem is another bug in the Nik plugins, which only Nik can fix.

  • Illustrator CS4 hangs when trying to map art on 3D object

Hi, does anyone have a solution for this problem:
Illustrator CS4 hangs when trying to map art on 3D object
The rendering dialog box comes up and never goes away.  I have to force a quit.
    I'm on a Mac OS 10.6.6
    I've got AI CS4
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Linda

This may not be exactly what you are looking for but another user experienced a crash:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3162350
Scroll down to JETalmage's post and see if you are doing anything which he describes as being a potential cause for AI to stop responding.
Also, as in the link I provided, try to give more details about your scenario so we can see if the problem can be replicated.

  • AE CS4 hangs while rendering to AVI

(running CS4 on Win XP Pro x64 on a quad core Opteron system with 4GB memory)
I have a fairly long composition (8744 frames) that I used to render just fine on this system with AE CS2. Then I upgraded to CS4 (and subsequently had my .aep file converted). Now when I try to render the entire sequence to AVI,AE either just hangs around frame 7120 or I get an error around that same frame complaining it could not read a certain input AVI - but I can manually move the time cursor to that frame just fine, and the AVI is fine, too.
I tried changing the memory/cache settings but got no effect. Also changed number of CPUs to no avail. The rendering tab reports max. 35% memory usage (of 4GB) anyway.
Any ideas/suggestions what could be causing this and what I could do to get my movie rendered?!
    Thanks!
    Martin
Edit: Now I tried to split the sequence in two parts. First part 0-7000 worked fine, second part (the rest) gave me this:
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <8068> <ae.blitpipe> <2> rect t:0.000000 l:0.000000 w:0.000000 h:-73.000000

    Mylenium,
first of all thanks very much for taking interest in my problem!
The composition as well as all the footage is non-interlaced, so not sure your suggestion applies. Also, the hang occurs on different frames each time, but very close to each other (I use the Render frame counter to tell where it hangs). In the meantime, I had AE write a Log file, tested the 'secret' preference options, tried to render shorter segements of the composition - all futile.
What I found out is that it is indeed caused by one specific video clip used in the composition. If I hide that, it renders fine. That clip is an AVI encoded using the (free, lossless) Huffyuv codec which, granted, is not supported and I am using it at my own risk but I never had any problems with it before, inlcuding older AE versions. I have converted that clip to another free, lossless codec (Lagarith) and now the composition is rendering.
It took me about five hours to find this out. I still have no good explanation, and I am certainly not impressed by AE's error recovery/reporting. :\

  • Fireworks CS4 hangs on install

I am attempting to install Fireworks CS4 from an Adobe DVD
sent to me by mail. When I get past the licensing agreement, I get
a "prepaing to install" message. The process will go no farther
than that. I even left it in that state overnight with no progress
    this morning.
I found a post online somewhere that said to delete the
install log file and reboot. Did that. Same hanging result. I've
seen other problems ahead dealing with fonts and loading, but I'm
certainly not even that far in the process. I can't even get the
program installed. Guess I'll have that to battle later (hope not
    though).
Any solutions to resolve this problem would be appreciated.
(running on XP by the way)
    Thanks.

Ok, I got this working, FINALLY!
Out of desparation, I uninstalled just about all of my Adobe
software. Then I cleaned the Adobe entries in the Registry and
removed the excess Application Data from my c:\Documents and
Settings folder. Then I rebooted my computer and disabled my
Antivirus software. I was able to install the entire Master
    Collection without any errors.
This was a waste of a perfectly good week. It would have been
helpful if the install program did this for me. My company paid
good money for this software, not to mention my time to
troubleshoot the installation. I have no beta software on this
computer so I'm not sure how I got into this state.
    Good luck, all ye followers!

  • Weird CS4 hanging issue in windows Vista when opening files with PS already loaded

I just installed the demo. I have a dual monitor setup running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with 8GB ram ...
It appears I have both the 32bit and 64bit versions of PS CS4 installed. If I open either of these apps, then choose say a jpg on my desktop, right-click in windows, choose, 'open with' and select 'Adobe Photoshop CS4', then PS hangs - period. After a while, clicking the title bar of the app (which is a kind of menu bar in this version) causes it to return to the old look windows title bar where it shows my image name and the zoom etc, but with the usual (Not Responding) at the end of the title bar text!
It does this no matter which version (32 or 64bit) is presently loaded. It also does it if I have CS4 loaded and I select 'Edit with Photoshop' in Lightroom 2.1 (my main app which is configured to output files in 16bit PSD format).
Another weird quirk I found in CS4 - if I select 'Help', 'System Info' it displays the info on my second monitor, not my first! I figure this by the screen res shown as my second monitor (monitor 3 in Vista) is only running 1280x1024. Not sure if this has an effect on which monitor profile is used by PS - I would hope not as my 1st monitor is my calibrated one!
    Thanks, Paul

Freeagent - I just did some more testing and figured the issue I think! I had selected 'Enable OpenGL Drawing' in Performance preferences and even though I have the very latest nVidia driver (downloaded today) this still causes this issue!
One issue I have noticed though since figuring how to fix this - I have 2 monitors and on the left one I have the panels un-docked and laid out neatly on the desktop. I then have the main PS window with it's height shrunk as slim as possible and filling the top width of my 2nd monitor. In CS3 when I open an image, it generally remembers where the last one opened and uses the same place - this includes if I had the image in its own window on my main monitor. In CS4, it seems to want to open them in tabbed dialogs within the PS main window and for some reason they are on minimal magnification, so I need to drag the tab over to my main monitor every time and zoom in to get a decent size displayed.
Is there anywhere to configure where you want it to open images?
    Thanks, Paul

  • Adobe soundbooth cs4 hangs when called from premiere cs4 in windows 7 64 bit

Whenever I try to edit a soundfile from within premiere cs4 Soundbooth starts and then hangs on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit machine; works fine in XP pro.

I discovered the problem only occurs once I try to open an mp3 file in Soundbooth CS4 from within Premiere CS4 and Sounddbooth is not already running.
If I open Soundbooth before I try to open an mp3 or any sound file in Soundbooth CS4 from within Premiere CS4 then there are no problems.  So the workaround is easy: start Soundbooth before I try to edit soundfiles form within Premiere.
Question: are you using 64 bit Windows 7?

  • AE CS4 hanging on Render (aeselflink)

    Hi-
I'm on a Mac Pro, 16 gb RAM, OSX 10.5.6, After Effects CS4 (latest updates installed as of this posting). It is a Quad Core machine, so the OS sees 8 CPUs.
More times than not when I go to render a movie the render process starts (the yellow status bar from left to right gets started) and then hangs, usually within one minute of beginning the rendering. When I go into Activity Monitor I see one or more of the 6 aeselflink processes displayed in red "not responding". I'm forced to cancel the render, and AE won't close from within the program, the spinning-colored circle "wait" icon is displayed and I'm forced to shut down the application from the Activity Monitor. The movie in question is only 2 mins long and while it has some green screen/chroma key footage in it, it is only a simple 640X480 test movie. No music, only a single voice and I've played with the export settings till I'm blue in the face with no success. Render, render fails, force close AE, change or update settings with the processor and/or RAM, restart the box. Rinse and repeat.
The only thing I could find about this is that back in AE CS3 you had to assign at least 2 gb RAM per CPU that you assigned to AE. I've tried all sorts of combinations of CPUs/assigned RAM levels (AE CS4 has a select list of only 4 values in each, I tried all of them), including computer restarts and this application is still failing. I've closed all non essential processes and have tried running AE by itself; no other apps open at all on my system - doesn't seem to matter. I've now spent days on this issue and am getting to the point where I may have to either contact Adobe Support about this or abandon the CS4 suite alltogether and head back to Final Cut Pro.
Anyone had a similar experience with CS4? How did you handle it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

Thanks for the link, that's interesting.
I don't think that's the issue with mine though. If I run in single core mode each frame in the animation takes 1.5 minutes... so maybe it's just a huge render and thus the activity monitor thinks it's not responding. It does slowly do the job though it seems.
If I use all the cores all my RAM dissapears, thus causing even more problems.
I've also tried just using four cores giving them 2GB each, but the same thing happens.
    Thanks for the reply though.

  • AE CS4 hangs everytime I open a certain project

    Hi,
Im using After Effects CS4 v9.0.2.42 on Windows 7 RC Build 7100 (actually stabler than Vista) and until now everything was just fine.
But now, everytime I open up a certain Project, After Effects hangs and Windows 7 gives me the Message: "AferFX.exe doesn't react anymore. Cause: AppHangB1" (freely translated from german). I only have this problem with this one project and I can't figure out why.
In it, there's just a video in the background, a solid used as a ground plane, a camera, a light and two Trapcode Particular Particle Worlds.
I could work with this project fine until I opened it from the save.
In case they're important, here are my system specs: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.5 GHz
                                                                                  Ati Radeon HD 4890
                                                                                  4 GB of RAM
Hopefully, somebody here can help me because i would hate to do the whole project all over again.

Hopefully, somebody here can help me because i would hate to do the whole project all over again.
Well, bad news then: If AE doesn't throw an error about "project structure damaged" or "project does not contain instance X of item Y", then the structure is usually unrecoverable. Even importing the project into a new, empty one would not work then. The only other potential culprit I can imagine is damaged conform files in your media cache. Manually deleting that data might help. All that aside -  always make good use of incremental saving, regardless of how trivial a project may seem...

  • Dreamweaver CS4 hangs on images folder - please help!

We are running DW CS4 with Subversion integration for version control.  Whenever we try to open the images folder on our local site copies, DW hangs for what seems like an eternity - usually 5 minutes - before opening.  I've replicated this behavior on both a mac and a windows platform.  On a mac at least, the problem goes away when version control is disabled.
Has anyone else encountered the problem and resolved it?  We want to use version control but if we cannot end this behavior it may render the version control worthless becase of the performance hit our operations will take.
Any help would be extremely appreciated.

This post has been up now for almost two weeks and nobody has responded from Adobe.  I have also been working with Adobe support who have asked theat I delete and recreate the preferences folder and clean up temporary files.  None of these steps have worked.  The behav ior is strikingly consistent - delays of between 3 and 6 minutes to open an images folder, with exactly the same delay each time on the affected site, and absolutely no delay once version control is turned off.
Is anybody else experiencing this?  Though I am willing to acknoweldge the possibility there could be config issues specific to our installation, this issue It has the smell of a bug within the version control setup itself.  I would ask anyone else using integfrated version control with DW CS4 to let me know if they have seen this problem.  Thank you.

  • CS4 hangs while installing Adobe Media Player

I am installing CS4 Design Premium on a MacBook. I can get past selecting what to install and when clicking install it does start to install the program. However, when it starts to install adobe media player it just hangs there. I have left it over night just in case this app takes a long time, but no luck in doing that.
Any suggestions? I would highly appreciate it.

  • Dreamweaver CS4 Hangs On Loading

    Hi folks!
I have been trying to start Dremweaver and it gets as far as iinitializing browserlab and just hangs.
Does this sound familiar to any one?
    bookie56

Ok, I checked around with other people on the team and here's the story: we had to make a number of changes to our login process to be able to work with CS6. Unfortunately those changes are completely incompatible with DW CS4. We're not sure why your copy of DW is hanging on startup (maybe there's a login dialog waiting for a response in the background or something), but even if it wasn't hanging I'm sorry to say that the BrowserLab plug-in for Dreamweaver just won't work with DW CS4 any longer, and there is no way for us to fix this issue.
That's the bad news. The slightly better news is that if you make use of the BrowserLab for Firebug add-on, you still should be able to edit local content in DW and preview that local content in BrowserLab. The workflow is described in this blog post: http://blogs.adobe.com/browserlab/2011/08/22/testing-private-content-with-browserlab/
    Hope this helps,
    Mark
