PS CS4 seems to run slow under Snow Leopard...

Hello, this is my first post at the forums.  I just did some tests and am a bit baffled.
Scenario:
Computer 1:
- New Mac Pro quad xeon running snow leopard and PS extended 10.0.1, 6 gigs of ram with only photoshop running
- opened a 52"x52" 300 dpi image.
- cropped image and the cropping took a bit longer than I hoped for maybe about 3-4 min.
Computer 2:
- Imac Intel core 2 duo with 2 gigs of ram with PS and AI and other apps running
- opened same image
- cropping was faster than the Mac pro.... took about 2-3 min
Any thoughts?
Another Scenario:
Computer 1:
- New Mac Pro quad xeon running snow leopard and PS extended 10.0.1, 6 gigs of ram with only photoshop running
- opened a 2.8 gig 300 dpi image.
- cropped image and got a message saying operation can't be done because out of ram
Computer 2:
- Quad g5 6 gigs or ram
- opened same file
- was able to crop but it took a while.
Any thoughts?
I wanted to see if it's the OS or the Machine but I tried to install 10.5 in the new mac pro and it won't let me.
Just wanted to share been looking around for any info about app speeds.
- Nico

Oops I meant 11.0.1 also to clarify the one running on the imac is PS CS4 standard not extended but the one running on the G5 and Mac pro is Extended.

  • Why does Lion run slower than Snow Leopard?

I recently loaded Lion on my older MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo, with 4 GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. and it runs slower and the it seems to be hotter and consume more battery power. Are the configuration option that can reduce the power drain?

You may have some mildly-incompatible third-party software, or you may be doing tasks that demand a lot of RAM and 4 GB is no longer enough on a system that has double the memory requirements of SL.  Or could be something else entirely.  Take a look at Understanding upgrade nightmares* for more information and some potential solutions.

  • Lion runs slower than Snow Leopard

We called about our very new Power Mac with 12 cores. We are running Maple on that machine, and less than 2.4% of one CPU is used for our calculations in the Lion 10.7.4 windows mode. The last advisor advised us to install Snow Leopard on the new machine.
We tried that as we had bought a family pack of MacOSX 10.6.3 some time ago and used that for two older machines. But the new machine complained that the installation can not be performed as this version apparently uses a fat binary.
We have also contacted Maplesoft, and they believe that Java and the GUI in Lion may cause the delay in the calculations. They advised us to run in Command Line mode using the nohup feature (In Terminal ending the UNIX command by &). We have tried this and found CPU use of 100% and even higher in parts where parallel processing was used. However,  running in the Command Line version of Maple is not attractive, as it takes away most of the interactive response with the program and produces results in linear form that are hard to read.
An old small 2 core PowerBook on which Snow Leopard runs is now our top machine, as long as the problem on the brand new machine is not resolved.
Do you have any further suggestion? We have wasted a lot of time and money on the new Power Mac so far.

Power Mac? Do you mean Mac Pro? Power Macs aren't capable of running anything higher than Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard because Snow Leopard and Lion are Intel-only.

  • Safari load times slower under Snow Leopard?

    Has something recently changed?
Safari used to be very snappy- suddenly pages are taking forever to load.
The first days I ran SL- all seemed fine.
The last few days- major hang-ups.
I have three machines and it happening across the board.

    Greetings,
It's probably the Top Sites and Cover Flow features caching all those web pages; that can slow things down quite a bit. And if you don't clear your History before you quit every day, that cache just keeps getting larger. You might want to consider disabling those features and removing their cache of web page preview images.

  • TS2510 problem with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 under snow leopard

Hi, I've just upgraded my mac book to snow leopard and now when I try to record something with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 through the line input jack, the internal microphone is still switched on and none of the preferences allow me to switch to the input jack,ks
Does anyone know whether STP v2.0.2 will run ok under snow leopard? If I need to upgrade the drivers, does anyone know where I can find these and how to instal them.
    Many thanks.

    There are no "drivers".
Use Audio MIDI Setup to set your audio input.
    Good luck.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • Adobe CS3 and CS4 updater under Snow Leopard issues

Hey everyone -Ive been trying to research this and I have CS4 and CS3 (just photoshop installed) under snow leopard -(clean install) and when I launch the adobe updater on CS3 it just crashes-and on CS4 the updater runs but finds no updates and I know they are out there.
This is all I could find on Adobes Forumns
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2349031#2349031
They talk about changing the permissions of the admin group but you have to be careful or you will mess your machine up -I dont wanna do that.
Is anyone having this problem? Or can anyone help
    Matt

You might try creating another user account (testUser) and seeing if those installers will function properly there, under a clean account...

  • Acrobat CS4 under Snow Leopard

hello one and all, just received new CS4 web premium and installed on a new mac pro with snow leopard 10.6.1.  printing to the acrobat 9 printer doesn't work.  it gets up to asking for the location and filename of the pdf file, the host software sends the print pages to the driver, but the pdf file never shows up on the harddrive.  additionally, acrobat will die unexpectantly by simply opening a pdf file.  i am hoping/betting that this is because i installed CS4 under snow leopard and i am anxiously awaiting updates to bring stability to the CS4 products.  thank you.  lucas

Here's one way to accomplish having a PDF printer in Snow Leopard:
Requirements: 2 computers—one running Snow Leopard and one running an OS in which the PDF printer appears in the print menu, say Tiger 10.4.11, for example.
    1. On the Tiger computer:
    a. In Preferences, turn on Print Sharing.
    b. In Preferences, make the Adobe PDF Printer share-able.
    2. On the Snow Leopard computer:
    a. In Preferences: add the Adobe PDF printer, which will appear as a Bonjour printer after you clik +
Note that files may not appear where you expect them: printing to pdf results in files being generated on the Tiger computer's desktop (for me).
This was arrived at working with an Apple Support Tech named Eric: thanks, Eric!
Adobe: Printing to pdf is by no means replaced by the drop-down, especially for batch processing of many items.
A way to create a properly scaled pdf and eps file from any application is key for many people.

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

  • VI server runs slower under LV 7

Has anyone noticed VI server running slower under LabView 7 than 6.1?
I use a "Call By Reference Node" to programatically run a VI. This call seems to take at least a factor of three longer in LV 7 than 6.1. The code in each LV version is exactly the same.
    Attachments:
    call_mods.vi ‏48 KB

    Yes,
I have noticed that some of the functions of the VI Server as well as particular property nodes are a lot slower in LabVIEW 7 vs. LabVIEW 6. For instance, if you get the caption labels from a nested control (inside a cluster or array) it will take significantly longer than a regular control on the front panel. The further a control is buried, the longer it takes. I am not sure how to solve the problem though.

  • My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, runs fine under Lion.

My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, even though it was originally written for Snow Leopard.  It runs fine on my Dev machine under Lion. But when I test it on my Snow Leopard Mac Mini the app starts but the window does not appear. Going to file, new window does nothing. My depolyment target is set to 10.6. Is there something I did to make my app lose Snow Leopard compatiblty?

Does your application use features only available in Lion?  Are you getting any console logs?

  • MacBook Pro 17 2.33 running hotter under Snow

I am just curious if anyone is noticing their Computers running hotter under Snow-
    Let me know your thoughts
    Matt

Mine too. Fans on (and noisy) a lot.(MBP 15" unibody)
Plus a lot of stuff crashes (TextEdit,of all things)
Reinstall didn't help much. Thinking about moving back.

  • Running Parallels Desktop under Snow Leopard Server?

I'm considering buying a mac mini server to replace my old windows server. This would require running some windows-based server applications in a virtual machine.
Does anyone have experiences running Parallels Desktop under Mac OS X server? Parallels support says: it's not supported - use Parallels Server instead. Priced at 1248 USD, the latter is definitely not in my spending budget.

I've done this without any problems. Originally I did it because my Mac mini was the only Intel box I had available, and even accessing Parallels 3 via a Mac remote desktop on my PowerMac was speedier and more responsive than running Virtual PC directly on the PowerMac.
So, yes, it certainly runs and I had no problems. Whether newer versions, e.g. today's release of Parallels 5 will also run, I can't answer. I don't see why not. Download the free trial and see how you get on.
Me: I bought a Parallels 4 upgrade this week cos Parallels 3 won't run under Snow Leopard. <grrr>. Onl;y to discover that a new version is released today. <grrr>. I am very relieved to learn that Parallels will give me a free upgrade to Parallels 5. Good on them -- well done Parallels.

Can I run Logic in Snow Leopard?

    LP9 runs fine under 10.6.8....
In fact using Logic Pro 9.1.5 and OS X 10.6.8 turned out for me and many others it seems.. to be one of the most stable combinations of Logic and OS X of all time
