PS CS5/6 on AMD?
Hi all
I'm considering rebuilding my old workstation as a backup by replacing the guts with something a bit more up-to-date. I've noticed some very nice prices for AMD compatable motherboards and AMD cpus, esp their 8 core models. I recall a lonnggg time ago there was 'issues' with AMD and PS - so I'd appreciate some feedback from AMD box users today. Worth the effort? Thanks!
I have used both and I'm actually begining to see a very minor difference in favor of Intel, but negligible for the price difference, AMD is just fine.

CS5 Compatibility with AMD E350 Processor
I just opened up my new computer and I realized it didnt have a CD Drive. Later looking into the specs I failed to check if the CS5 Design Premium Suite will run on my AMD Fusion E350 Processor ( 1.60GHz 1MB ) APU. Its an 11.6 inch netbook with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. 3GB of RAM and plenty of Hard Drive Space. But I am mainly asking if the AMD E350 Processor is enough to run the CS5 Suite (Mainly Photoshop) well.
PS. If you know how to install photoshop cs5 without a built-in CD Drive any advice would be helpful.Yes, it will run. When I travel, I take a HP DM1Z-3000 along that is loaded with PSCS 5, Illustrator CS5, and LR 3.5. That HP line uses the AMD E350 Fusion processor. Is it as fast as my HP DM4 laptop with an I5 processor - no, but it will get the job done. The bottleneck for you will be the RAM, not the processor. It really is quite fast and very energy efficient. My recommendation would be to up the RAM and you will have something that will work quite well. I upgraded the RAM of both machines to 8 GB (quite cheap at this point), and even the little DM1Z can run circles around my 2 year old Core2Duo laptop that now sits on a shelf. For comparison, the old Core2Duo laptop also has 8 GB of RAM and it is simply not as responsive as the DM1Z....

PhotoShop CS5 with Windows 7 64 bits and/or Windows 7 32 bits
Hello
I just bought a new computer with an Intal QuadCore, 8 Gb of memory and Windows 7 - 64 bits edition
I plan to upgrade from a former Photoshop CS3 onWindows XP and it was a 32 bits edition
Is the Photoshop CS5 supported on BOTH Win 7 32 AND 64 bits ? Or are they different versions ?
I plan to either have a dual boot Win 7 32 Bits - Win 7 64 bits or separate hard disk on racks, so I'll still be able to use 32 bits softwazre that don't run on 64bits
But if PhotoShop CS5 comes in 2 versions, I need to decide which one I should buy
Thanks for any help you vcan provide
have a good day
PS : Is the problem with PhotoShop CS5 running on AMD processors solved ?Windows 7 x64 is a separate build from Windows 7 32 bit. Windows 7 Ultimate comes with BOTH.
There isn't a separate package of Photoshop CS5 for 32 bit or 64 bit. Photoshop (since CS4) installs both 32 bit and 64 bit software on a 64 bit Windows system, or only 32 bit software on a 32 bit Windows system.
Photoshop CS5 is fine with every variant of Windows 7.
Photoshop CS5 is reportedly fine with modern AMD processors, though I have only used Intel.
The detailed system requirements are here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/systemreqs/
My own (personal, subjective) opinion is that ATI (AMD) video interfaces are better than nVidia.
Hope this answers your questions.

Mac vs. Windows CS5(.5) (not a flame)
Guys,
I swear that I am not flaming here and that I am relatively new to adobe products. In fact, I learned the ins and outs of Dreamweaver CS5, but that's pretty much it. My interest in Adobe products has increased a lot and I recently purchased the Design Suite Premium for a Macbook Pro that I have that is a year old. It has 8gb RAM as opposed to my two PC laptops that have 2 gb each and are much older and not as quick. I am not tech savvy either (disclaimer).
Anyway, I basically have two questions and I'm posting them in the Windows forum because I believe that Mac users can't give criticism to a Mac:
1. I purchased CS5.5 Design Premium. I'm enrolled in a college program for web design. It interests me a lot. All of the research that I have conducted leads me to believe that Indesign would be better to have than Flashbuilder and Contribute. I know it depends upon what exactly a person is going to do, but I have many entrepreneurial ideas and believe that I could benefit from Indesign.
Is Flashbuilder anything special that I would really want to have for web design? It doesn't seem like it to me, so I went with Design Premium. However, since CS5.5 hasn't been released for Mac yet, I could cancel the order and purchase for Windows. I have only used Windows for Dreamweaver. THe only reason I am seriously considering the switch to Mac is because the computer is newer and much more powerful. I just want to be told that I will not regret it. As I said, I have no loyalty to any platform, but I am much more familiar with WIndows because it's pretty much all that I have ever used. I got a great deal on the Macbook through a friend, otherwise I would have never bought it.
Would there be any problems associated with switching to a Macbook for use of Creative Suite products? I just don't want to regret switching to the Mac, but in order to be comfortable with a PC, I'd need to upgrade as the two computers are 3 and four years old respectively and I'd like to avoid spending anymore money. As I said, Dreamweaver is my thing, but I'd like to become familiar with all of the main products in the Design Suite such as Indesign (so long as I go with Design over web premium), Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, and Flash.
THanks for any help. I know I just asked a buttload of questions, so I really appreciate anybody that takes the time to assist me. I really wish that I could be convinced that I won't regret going to Mac as I don't want to upgrade to a new PC.As a nine year Mac user who's also had three PCs for the last seven years. I hope I can give you a pretty objective assessment of your concerns.
First of all, I've worked on two Mac forums and Yes, mac users CAN and DO criticize Macs. I owned a first generation G5 iMac and I'll tell you it was a P.O.S.
FlashBuilder is for people who are going to create Flash content (apps and games mostly) without havig to become an expert in ActionScript. If that isn't what you're looking to do, you won't need it. Contribute is more of an interface tool for easy uploading to a website like if you own a business and hired someone to build your website, but you want to be in control of daily content changes. Again, if that isn't something you need, it isn't for you.
Switching to Windows and then realizing that you would have been better off using the Creative Suite on the more powerful machine (Mac)... will cost you to switch the license from Win to Mac. Granted it isn't a whole pile of money to do it, but if you can wait for the Mac release, do it. Not because I think Macs are better, but because you've admitted the MacBook is a better machine than your PCs are. If you switch the order to the PC version, then find it doesn't run as well as you'd like, you already have a poor impression of the software because of the hardware, but then you'd have to pay and transfer the license, order the Mac software, wait for it to arrive and install & set it up opn the MacBook. A lot more frustration than you'll have if you just wait a little while for the Mac CS5.5
Lastly, since the user interfaces for CS products are now almost impossible to tell apart between Mac and Windows, you won;t need to learn a whole new way to do things to use the Mac version. I've spent the last three years jumping from CS4/CS5 on my AMD machine to my MacBook and back. I'd sometimes forget which machine I created a file on and have to smack my head & say, "Duh! I did that on the Mac!" or the other way around.
I like Macs better, but I also prefer the more powerful machine for anything I do. My next PC will be more powerful than my MacBook and it will move to #2. -
OpenGL seemingly deactivates after use of quick selection tool (PS CS5)
Before using the quick selection tool, I am able to smoothly zoom in and out by holding Ctrl+Space and dragging with the mouse.
If I use the quick selection tool, however, the marching ants line turns into a strange box. I no longer am able to zoom smoothly but instead with the technique above I draw a rectangle which I zoom into. This indicates to me, that OpenGL has been deactivated. I want my smooth zoom back!
I noticed that the preferences always show OpenGL as active, no matter which of the above "state" I'm in. I tried updating my AMD graphics card's driver without success. I found a post describing similar OpenGL problems on the same graphics card and installed the linked driver; the post was 2 years old, but it worked. Re-installing more recent version (Catalyst-Version 12.6) brought the problem back. Newer versions of the driver seem all to suffer from the same problem.
I'm using
Windows 7 64-bit,
64-bit Photoshop Extended from CS5 Production Premium,
AMD Radeon HD 4600 (currrently Catalyst-Version 13.1).
I tried:
"Downgrading" the driver (only really old version worked, as mentioned above),
reseting Photoshops preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift at start),
deactivating OpenGL (reactivating only works after restart and problem reappears) but I miss the smooth zoom.
I hope I could clarify the problem and thank you for reply!I seriously can't download version 13.4...
This is my input for the driver search on their homepage (I'm German, that's why some words are German...):
This is the result I get from the above input:
I have not a single clue, how I am supposed to download another version than the current. AMD makes it really difficult for me.
Maybe someone could post a link to another version? That would be really nice!
Also I tried the "Driver Autodetect". Catalyst-Version 13.1 is now installed...
This actually seems to be a thread for the AMD-Support, but maybe someone knows a workaround? -
Step Back/Forward vs Play (Smoothness)
After 10 seconds of continuously using 'step forward' or 'step back' in multicam mode I start experiencing some serious video stuttering, however, when i just play (spacebar) the sequence, there is no stuttering.
3 avchd tracks, 1 wav track,
no effects on any tracks,
all media on internal 7200rpm HDD at about 50% full capacity
CS5.5.2
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
8GB 1600 memory
ATI Radeon HD 5800 series
c: OS, Programs, Pagefile - 1TB 7200RPM
d: Previews, Media Cache, Exports - 1TB 7200RPM
e: Media, Projects - 1TB 7200RPM
Resource monitor registers a consistent 9MB/sec when playing (spacebar) sequence, but varies wildly from 0-20MB/sec when using 'step forward' or 'step backward'
Is this normal? any thoughts?
Thanks
-wolvWhen stepping forward, each frame has to be decoded without caching, because your next step may well be to step backward or some other action. When playing each GOP can be cached, so it is a lot easier on the system. At least that is what I'm guessing. Your CPU (AMD), memory (only 8 GB) and GPU (AMD) are not very fast, so on a fast system this may not be very noticable, but it will be on your system.

Photoshop CS6 error 0xc000001d
I just installed Photoshop CS6 beta and when trying to run it I get error 0xc000001d. I know there was an issue with CS5 when using AMD Processors until it was updated. I am also running Windows XP Pro, any ideas to get it running?
ThanksAs in CS5, we officialy require SSE2 to run Photoshop (more specifically on Windows, a Pentium 4, Athlon 64 or better). We are still checking to see if we can minimally support older processors by using the CS5 workaround, but it might not be easy or even possible for CS6.

Issues with CS5 Liquify in my iMac with a AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB Graphics Card
I have been trying to get to the bottom of this issue on my own, but to no avail. I am running Photoshop CS5.1 Extended on an iMac with an i7, 16 GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB graphic card. I am running OSX Lion. Speed of the computer should NOT be an issue, but my liquify tool is impossibly slow. I have seen others having this issue, but am not finding resolutions. I have updated all of my software (Lion, CS5) and updated my drivers. I have uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it, but still, no help.
My Liquify tool is so slow that it is impossible to use. It does not register if I release the mouse either and I often have to click a few times to release the brush. I have Photoshop 5.1 on a PC and the Liquify runs very smoothly.
Has this issue been addressed? I am wondering if it has a root in how CS5 is reacting to the graphics card? When I called Adobe, they swore it was Apple's fault. When I talked to Apple, they were positive the blame lay with Adobe. I just want a fix. (Hey, I'll take a CS6 beta if that'll fix it. )
Thank you,
RachelDo you have any third party plugins installed? If so, have you tried disabling them? (one was showng to cause a slowdown, but I don't have my office notes handy at the moment to remember which one)
Also, there was one obscure third party utiliity program (haxie) that also caused slowdowns in Liquify. (and again, my notes are at the office, so I don't recall the name)
And you can try the usual: trash/reset Photoshop's preferences.
Oh, and Lion still has a bunch of video driver bugs that Apple is continuing to work on.
Sorry I don't have more definite info right now. -
Will Photoshop CS5 run on a n AMD-based laptop?
I have an Intel based desktop PC and want to buy an AMD based laptop.
Will the CS5 photoshop program I have run on both types of processors?
This may be a stupid question to some, but I would like to be sure before I buy.
Thanks, FredIt's not a stupid question, but lucky for you those times like back in the 1990s where AMD processors were not fully compatible are long past. As long as you have your system running and installed all AMD specific stuff like motherboard drivers and Windows updates, I would not expect issues. I'd be more concerned about compatibility if the new laptop runs Win 8 instead of Win 7... There may be minor issues to overcome.

AMD Phenom II's and CS5 Premeire
I'm still using Premiere Pro 2 and I'm thinking of finally upgrading. Now I know everyone recommends Core i7 systems, but the only reasons I've seen for these recommendations always seem to involve encode times. I really don't mind waiting longer for things to render. As long as playback and scrubbing is smooth while editing, and I can use at least 4 or 5 layers at once, that's all that matters to me. So my question is this: would a Phenom II 940 system with a gtx 260 using the hack to unlock the cuda acceleration run smoothly enough during the editing process in CS5? Would it really be significantly worse than an i7 for scrubbing, playback and such? Would CS4 be a better choice for me? Also, my camera only shoots 1080i, so I wouldn't be editing 1080p footage.
AMD is a lousy choice for editing, because of the lack of SSE 4.1 extensions. It performs way slower than Intel.
Even dual hexa core Opteron on CS5 are around 3 times slower than a properly configured i7-920. And a Phenom 940 machine running CS4 is more than 20 times slower than an i7-920 running CS5. -
AMD Radeon HD 6750M and bug in Photoshop CS5
Lately I noticed that merging spot channels in Photoshop CS 5 changes the opacity of the images.
Adapting my settings in preferences > performance > GPU setting solves the problem if you enable the Open GL drawing and in advanced settings mode is set to basic. This was not set by default and so gave the problems mentioned above.
I hope that a future update of the video card driver can solve this problem.MacBook Pro- How to determine which graphics processor is in use

In Photoshop CS5 why does Camera Raw 6.7 not open a Crw Raw Image?
I am running Windows XP Pro 32 bit system, with AMD ALthon 2600 processor. When I first installed Photoshop CS5 it would not open at all. After hours on the internet searching for online help from Adobe,L came across a on line chat. They said I needed a update for CS5.I downloaded the update and installed it and Photoshop opened up.Ithought this had solved my problem.Days Later I tried opening some Crw Raw Negatives. They would not open in Bridge or Mini Bridge. So I tried opening the raw image in Photoshop,a box pops up and says photoshop could not complete the task because it was the wrong image type.I have tried to get help in the General discussion forum,so far noyhing has worked. Also I forgot How to get to the online chat site,if anyonehas any ideas or where this site is It would help a lot......Thanks.

There is no such forum. The Forum Lounge is for social interaction or for meaningless chatter. The Forum Comments forum is to make comments on how the forums operate or ask questions about that. Perhaps you mean the Photoshop General Discussion forum or the Photoshop Beginners forum?
In any event, unless you provide full details no one is likely to be able to reply to your questions.
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

I cannot update Photoshop CS5, Bridge Extended after a fresh reinstall.
It's running in 32 and 64, but there's all these quirks.Like Bridge crashing in 64 but not 32. Raw also. The ATI Radeon5450 is often problematic (not capable of Open GL) In fact, I've been unable to work for a month now. Also, I can't tell if I've got Extended, I tried a downloaded install as well as from my original disk.

CS5 can not output MPE to external DV device
This is quite a surprise for those of us who rely on DV output.
Harm Millaard:
"An MPE card stops external monitor viewing."
"The problem is that CUDA does not currently support output
on DV devices, only full screen second displays (DVI, DisplayPort, etc)."
"...one serious limitation, those who use dual monitors for editing and
a third monitor for full screen display and color grading or that use the
fire wire connection to record DV/HDV back to tape.
Some may think tape is dead, but there are numerous people around
that still like to jeep their final cut on a master tape."
"The basic problem is how to get a DV signal back over firewire for
exporting to tape or display on an external monitor and that currently is a CUDA problem."
"It must be resolved. If not, the introduction of CS5 / MPE as a game changer
can quickly turn into a game stopper.
I think (purely personal opinion) Adobe and nVidia must correct this ASAP
Otherwise you end up with a SNAFU."J Graves wrote:
The first post about this CS5 bug was in May. It is now Augusut and still no fix?
Every time I'm about to place my order for CS5, I find out about another "gotcha' problem. I'm still on CS3 and am seriously wondering whether I should continue to move forward with Premiere.
I still use an older "DPS Velocity Quattrus" system and it still leaves Premiere in the dust. Unfortunately Harris, who bought Leitch/who bought DPS, has discontinued the product. A software developer from Itlay is attempting to breathe life into it (ivsEdits.com), but it isn't a fully operational system.
Yes, "Firrewire" output is still a Big Deal. There are many of us who use our editing systems as a business tool. Going back and disabling the Mercury Engine, then re-rendering as "software only" is a waste of my time.
Come On, Adobe & Nvidia, get this fixed!
Well...i'd guess that CS5 hold it's own against a system like yours for flexibility...though if the way that card works is in your workflow "sweet spot" then I guess you're probably best served to stay with it.
If you have a system that has the juice to even run CS5, i can't imagine that running a CUDA-augmented system for Mercury is even remotely necessary for editing DV... as far as using our systems as a business tool...I'm not sure what you're implying. Most of us who are in the production business -in general- have moved to some form of HD some time ago, most of my peers made the move during CS2...
Are you implying the rest of us aren't professionals, even as you are lobbying for aggressive support of a consumer-oriented I/O configuration? I hope not.
It's not a bug BTW...it's a configuration that a few people don't like...but when your effects render is out on the display card, that's the way the pipe is routed. Even HDSDI card manufacturers are finding that pulling those frames back off the display card negates some of the speed gains.
If you have a system that is qualified for it, I think you should download the demo and try it before you assess PPro CS5 any further. You are making lots of sweeping statements about a piece of software released almost 4 years ago running on a hardware system that was discontinued 4 years ago being better than the newest software running on up-to-date hardware without understanding what its performance is really like...even without a CUDA card.
I can shut off CUDA and rip through DVCProHD like there's no tomorrow on my 3 year old dual dual core AMD...I have to believe you'll be able to -shred- DV on even an average-ish machine by today's standards. -
Why does my entire computer freeze while opening or using After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5?
Just built a computer to meet all requirements for Adobe, Autodesk 3ds Max, and UDK, for school.
Specs;
Motherboard - ASRock X79 Extreme 4-M, Socket 2011 - Micro ATX - 4 DDR3 1600/1333/1066/800 - 3 PCI-E 3.0 x 16 - 7.1 CH HD Audio - PCIE GLAN - 3 SATA3 - eSATA3 - 4 SATA2 - 4 USB 3.0 - 10 USB 2.0
Processor - Intel Core i7 Processor - i7-3820 LGA 2011

RAM - Ballistix by Crucial - 2x 8GB Tactical PC3 - 12800 CL8 1.5 VW/XMP = 16GB RAM
SSD - Crucial M4 SSD 128GB - Comptatibility with 6Gb/s & backward compatible with SATA 3Gb/s
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1TB - 7200 RPM up to 32mb cache

Graphics Card - EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX480 - DirectX11 - CUDA - OpenCL Support - PhysX Technology - OpenGL 4.1 (so says the box it came in; but if I'm not mistaken I think the command prompt had shown OpenGL 3 or 3.2)
Disc Driver - LG DVD/CD RW... It is an OEM, Windows claims it is updated.
I use an external component - USB Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard 2000.
I have, as far as software goes...
Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Adobe Creative Suite 5, student version or what have you.
- I do have several plugins installed as well for After Effects only.
Autodesk 3ds Max 2012
-I have several maxscripts as well as a couple plugins for 3ds Max.
UDK 2-2012 & 3-2012
NVIDIA PhysX Lab 1.1
NVIDIA Texture Tools 2
NVIDIA plugin for Photoshop
xNormal
ConTEXT
UnCodeX
Quicktime
AVG Free
Malwarebytes
7-Zip
Java
Sculptris
As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well. Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.
Again, to those who replied, your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated, thank you.
