PS CS5-- apply labels in MiniBridge?

I am loving MiniBridge in CS5-- incredibly useful. I'm wondering, however, if it's possible to apply labels within MiniBridge? Right now I'm going through a huge batch of images, viewing thumbs and opening files via MiniBridge in PS, but having to revert to (full) Bridge to apply lables such as "approved" etc. which is rather silly.... it would be *great* if I could use shortcuts like CTRL-8 to apply labels directly within MB; please tell me I'm somehow overlooking this functionality?

I'm a bit late to the party, but you actually CAN rate and label in Mini Bridge. You have to be in one of the three preview modes "Slideshow", "Review Mode" or "Full Screen Preview". In those modes you can use the common keys 1-0 and alt/option+Backspace to rate, label and reject.
However, I would still love if those keyboard shortcuts were also available in Mini Bridge's thumbnail view. When inserting a bunch of images in InDesign I would like to hide those that are already in the document. labeling/rating and a filter would do the job, but having to go into a preview mode is a bit inconvenient.
A function that shows and filters by placement status in an InDesign document would be even more elegant. Would also be handy when working on a larger batch of images in Photoshop.

  • I can't apply labels to images in version 2.1.1

Last November 3rd I updated IBooks Author to version 2.1.1 (459). Since that day I can't apply labels to images. I can edit labels for the existing images, but there isn't any label list when I import a new one. If I create a new widget, labels are applied and can be edited.
I've tested this issue with new documents and existing ones with the same result. I also tried to restore a version 2.1 from my previous TimeMachine backups, but no succes.
I've being working well since I installed Maveriks, until this version 2.1.1 update. It is a bug? I've read complains about the same failure in the comments of the App Store from Spain. Can I downgrade iBooks author?
I am finishing a techical book with hundreds of images, so, you know what I am feeling.

Might be a bug - best to contact Apple directly so they can take a look, I think...

  • Applying labels to multiple files

How can I apply a label to multiple files through the visual interface? In other words, I want to select 3 files at once and then select the label option.  I know I can click on the add button for the apply label dialogue but this can be very tedious if you are dealing with a large set of files.  there has to be a way to do this right?
    Thanks in advance . .

Let's see if I can describe this clearly.  If I don't, do not hesitate to ask for clarification:
We have a parent folder Main that has production code.  When  a developer needs to work on a new project, he or she will branch a section of code to development folder and start working on it (if the same code files are there, there is no need to branch).  to make sure we have a rollback option (in case things go wrong), the developer should be able to select a group of files and label them as labelproj1 old before he or she starts development.  The way we do do development here is we have a rollback versions (we are still using VSS) based on previous pinnings if the project gets rolled back for whatever reason.
Selecting a group of files means we are only concerned with the files we modify.  We don't want to select the code at the folder level because we are not modifying those files.  We only concern ourselves with the files we modify for audit purposes.
does this clarify what I am looking for or do you need more clarification? Let me know and I wll be happy to clarify.

  • Can Not Apply Labels

    Hi, All.
I've upgraded from Bridge CS4 to CS5. It's been great, except for one thing: I can't seem to apply any labels of any kind to files.
Here's what happens: I select the files which I want to label and either use the keyboard shortcut or the menu bar to apply a label. Then, nothing changes. No color appears, and, if I go back to the menu bar, there aren't any check marks next to the labels that I've applied. Things that are labeled from CS4 appear as a white bar.
    Any suggestions, hints, or ideas?
Should I file a bug report?
    Thanks in advance!
    -Nate

    Thanks for the link!
Even though I was pretty sure that I had all the permissions I needed, I went to the Get Info window for the root of the drive that my photos are on. I was owner and had r/w, but to be sure I did a Apply To Enclosed Items. This fixed things.
    Thanks!

  • CS5 - Wrap label around a cylinder (like wine label or pop can)

[This is not a Windows-specific question, I hate to exclude Mac users from this answer, but there is no platform-neutral forum here]
In Photoshop CS3 and earlier, taking a layer, such as a label for a wine bottle or jar, wrapping it around a 3D cylinder and compositing it to an image (of the actual jar or bottle) was almost trivially easy.
Unfortunately, with the advanced 3D tools available in CS4+, the simplicity of the Wrap > Cylinder option seems to have been lost.
Wrapping a complex texture around a cylinder (full coverage, top to bottom) is possible, but how about wrapping a label (especially one that has a die-cut ie: not full coverage)?
A couple of quick searches have surprisingly turned up no tutorials on the subject. Has what was once such a simple technique become so technical and obscure?
Can someone point me to a tutorial (written or video), or provide a list of steps here on this forum?
    Thanks!

Are you saying the work on Refine Edge which is new in CS5 needs re-re-architecting? ;-)
Heh, I sure am. Not that it isn't on its way. The Refine Edge in CS4 showed us where Photoshop was heading in terms of broadening its selection maniuplation toolset (ah, I remember the days of alpha channels + blur + levels + maximize / minimize). But we saw the (almost) disappearance of Extract Filter. Then its most powerful algorithm reappered in Refine Edge in CS5 and it was a Good Thing. Decontaminate Color alone is worth its weight in gold - that's a nifty little algorithm that saves us all time with the paintbrush manually un-pre-multiplying sub-pixel content.
But it still needs work - notably, it is one of the few tools yet that still feel "outside" the standard application workflow. It's its own dialog box (not a palette) and it's a one-shot, destructive effect. I appreciate that you can output to a separate layer, AND make your settings default. It still feels like it's stuck in a pre Smart Filters era.
Please note that I'm not complaining here, just pointing out that it can still get better, and mask manipulations (from my perspective, and that's only one, as the Photoshop userbase is one of the most diverse out there) are core functionality, whereas 3D is arguably not. Or let me put it this way: lots of apps do 3D, and most of them do it better than PS. But no other apps do selections better than PS and that's a fact. Play to your strengths is all I'm saying.
I'm interested in this combination above. You don't feel the additional 3D features in Ps is a good fit, and yet you're being proactive to address demand from students. What are their specific use cases, if any? Do they resist your guidance to try other shoes if the ones Ps provides don't fit? What points do your students raise for why they want/need to use Ps for 3D instead of developing a tool kit that includes full 3D modeling applications?
You're right, my comment warrants clarification. The demand from students is not for 3D functionality per se. The demand for students is that you teach them the latest and the greatest (regardless of what industry actually expects out of a graduate's skillset), because they saw it on Adobe TV, or they read about it in some product review. I spend 24 hours of class time on colour correction (and that's scratching the surface), but about 5 minutes on Content Aware Fill. And I wouldn't even touch it if it weren't for the inevitable savvy student that pipes up in class when I talk about the Clone Tool and says "but isn't that replaced by Content Aware Fill?". So you have to touch on it.
One of the strange new realities of teaching Photoshop post PS5.5 is telling students "just because it's in the menu doesn't mean you should use it." This was first true with things like magnetic lasso, or art history brush, or the spot healing brush tool (though very specific cases can be made for each of them - I'm aware of that) and the tradition now continues on with Content Aware Fill / Scale, Mini-Bridge (though I'm sure this is just a personal opinion, and a good case can be made for it in your workflow on a very fast computer), and IMO, 3D.
So I don't necessarily see a contradiction. Students who are fairly new to the industry are hungry for the "cool factor" (not to mention the "easy way out"), and it's a constant balancing act designing curriculum that emphasizes best practices, while still covering all the bells and whistles (with the appropriate cautionary tales). If I were still teaching Advanced Photoshop to PS pros and they were clamoring for more 3D, that would be a whole other story. I'll admit that I may be out of the loop there, though, which is why I am still eager to hear from you who you think the target demographic that wants true 3D in Photoshop is.
When I was teaching to pros, they were mostly pro Photographers (think Yuri Dojc) or Architects. I can certainly see the latter being curious about 3D in Photoshop, but those that are technical enough are now all versed in the Autodesk suite, so they would be doing texture generation and compositing in PS at most. Photographers are much less likely to be even remotely interested in 3D within Photoshop, but that's probably not the audience you were building it in for anyway.
Do you feel your advanced experience with SoftImage, 3DS, Maya is helpful to understand Ps's 3D features or does it get in the way? IOW, what benefits and hindrances do you note when trying to apply previous learning to the Ps 3D feature set? Or is it hard to answer at this point because you've been blocked due to crashing and performance issues?
Without a shadow of a doubt, my background was essential to being able to pick this up in PS without the manual. I think I would feel completely lost if I didn't have 10+ years of 3D modeling, texturing and animation behind me (note that I don't consider myself a pro in 3D - just an experienced amateur). Possibly even WITH the manual.
3D is a wonderful world full of really cool technical details that merge the artistic with physics. Photoshop has bitten off only one branch of that, namely shaders, but that is in itself a vast subject. The amount of background knowledge you need to have under your belt is vast - what's the difference between diffuse and ambient colour? what's a specular highlight, and how do you control glossiness? what's a "normal"? hell - what's a "lightsource", and what are their different modes?
I just covered the basics of 3D using repousse and height mapping the other day in a class of twenty-odd 20-30 year olds: I spent 2.5 hours with the students (we had a lot of fun mind you) and didn't even get to texturing at all. Not a single mention of maps, colour or anything. There's too much other material to cover - navigation, object-level vs mesh-level manipulations (ask me my opinion on the usability of your implementation of that feature some time, you'll have another page to read!), then TSR, then lightsources, camera views, ground planes, raytracing, merge 3D layers (you'll have to explain the logic behind having separate 3D "scenes" co-existing within the same document some time).
Bottom line: adding 3D to Photoshop seems like you've put a tiny little door in the bottom of the vast, vast world of Photoimaging. When you open that door and look through you discover that there's this other huge huge world of 3D modeling just on the other side. In order to make ANY use of the 3D features, such as they are now (as opposed to the previous incarnations - including Vanishing Point, which had some very interesting potential) you now have to jump into that world and start to get your bearings.
I think the GPU is causing more headaches then the 4GB RAM, but that's only a quick assessment. Have you had much luck finding newer drivers?
You are almost certainly right. I need to get back to Chris on another thread and let him know that my drivers WERE, in fact, embarassingly out of date. Updating them didn't solve all my problems, but a few have gone away thankfully. I have yet to push the limits of 3D on my personal box again, but will certainly circle back with you if I notice some improvement.
Thanks Steve, always a pleasure talking about this stuff. I am about as passionnate a guy about Photoshop as you'll meet, but because I spend 90% of my time in industry using Photoshop as a production and creative tool (I only teach 1 day a week these days), you'll probably find I'm quite conservative. Heck, much of our agency is still running the full CS3 - there just hasn't been enough compelling reasons to upgrade across the entire organization yet.

  • CS5 - Applying Actions to Select Part of Image

    Hello,
I'm working in CS5. I'm new to actions and I would like to apply the action only to a specific part of the image. For example, for a portrait, I would like the action to apply to the background of the image, not necessary on the individuals face.
I'm not aware if there is a way to apply it to the entire image, then erase it from the areas I don't want it to apply, or if I lasso an area and apply it. I've tried it several different ways to no avail.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
    Liv

I would like the action to apply to the background of the image, not necessary on the individuals face.
As the differentiation of fore- and background of an image can be a convoluted issue (have you ever tried to clip the image of a curly-haired person from a background of shrubbery?), it does not lend itself to automation easily.
I'm not aware if there is a way to apply it to the entire image, then erase it from the areas I don't want it to apply
If you work with Adjustment Layers or Layer Masks in general the Masks can subsequently be edited easily.

  • Applying labels to all images in a stack

A long time ago, when I was using Photoshop Elelments I found a plug-in that made it possible to work with stacks as a unit.
If I labeled the top image in the stack that lable was applied to all the images in the stack; then when I sorted the images, the stack remained in tact; instead of just the top image, with the label showing up. I could also label the top image in a stack with flaga and, for example quickly delete all the image with an "X". Oterwise is seems the only option is to open each stack, by Ctrl-clicking the number in the upper left corner, that opens the stack; with all the images selected, then click the star lables I want to apply to all the images in the stack.
I don't remember where I found that plug-in.  I'm hoping the guy who wrote it; and all I can remember about him is that he was from England, has written a version for Lr?

I love a man with a sense of Humor
Your the man!  Thanks so much.  I bracket all my shots and load them into the  HDR editor in Ps; my workflow will go so much smoother now.

  • Easy way to apply labels?

Is there a utility or script that can apply a label without having to go into a finder/file menu.
It would be good it there were buttons on the finder window so a file could be selcted and button pressed.
Anyone know of such a utility??

Are you asking about the coloured Finder labels, or perhaps I am misunderstanding the question? In addition to the "Finder" > "File" menu, labels can be applied by selecting one or more items and control-clicking to open the contextual menu, which is probably the most convenient way. If you prefer a button in the "Finder" window, the "action" menu in the toolbar (the gear shaped button, assuming the toolbar is showing) also allows labels to be set. If the "action" menu isn't visible, the toolbar can be customized through the "Customize toolbar…" option available through the "View" menu, or by control-clicking in the toolbar.

  • Bridge CS5 applies wrong white balance during thumbnail extraction (raw files only)

    Hello to all Adobe Wizards,
Hobbiest photographer here. I use a Canon T2i and I have been shooting raw with auto white balance.
After I upload the CR2 files to Bridge, Bridge begins thumbnail extraction. This is when the problem begins: I watch Bridge extracting thumbnail photo after photo, turning them into wrong white balance one by one. After Bridge is done, I open one of these photos in Camera Raw, it shows the photo in "custom white balance". I was able to change it back to "As Shot". But every photo in Bridge now has custom white balance and is difficult to view in Bridge. This screenshot shows what my Bridge looks like after thumbnail extraction....
Yesterday, just out of curiosity, I took some photos with different white balance settings on the camera. I uploaded them to Bridge and Bridge over-wrote all the white balance settings. I then imported the same photos (from the same files) to iPhoto, they show up with correct write balance. Please see the second screenshot.
The third screenshot shows a unedited photo I opened from Bridge to Camera Raw, and the same photo as it appears in iPhoto, both unedited.
Again, this only happens to CR2 files. All tif, jpeg files are fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Wolfie

    Any ideas?
First of all, shooting Raw has the benefit of changing the color temperature (Whit Balance) to what ever you like from whatever you shot in camera.
To me it seems you once have saved a custom white balance as default setting and this is been applied to every new file because you told Bridge to do so. The easiest way to get out of this is open a raw file in ACR and in the basic tab at the right side you see a small icon for sub menu (next to the word basic). Click on it and from the row choose 'Reset Camera Raw defaults' at the bottom.
Also decide whether you want to stay in 16 bit mode (as you are now as shown in the blue line under the preview). If you want to chance it back to 8 bit just click on that blue line and choose your options from that menu. You only have to do this once for the files from that same camera, ACR remembers the settings for you.
Using 16 bit mode has advantages when using critical color corrections (but then you also should change the color mode to ProPhoto in my opinion). The disadvantage is that 16 bit doubles the file size compared to 8 bit
Having set the ACR defaults should effect your thumbs immediately by building new thumbs and previews but if not you must choose purge cache for folder from the menu tools / cache/ purge cache for folder. Now the new settings will be applied.
It may take some time so let Bridge do its work properly before starting other jobs in Bridge (see the activity bar bottom left to check if Bridge is still caching).

  • To group images with created text frame and apply label for it...

    Hi Everyone,
We are currently working in auto figure placements for CS3. I have placing the figures into the document. Then i am creating figure caption text frames below the images. Here the concern is i need to group these image and the text box. After this i have to place these images with captions into corresponding pages where the figures have been cited. The shadow effect has to have something to be applied on, but by default text frames borders and fills are invisible.
If you set the border of your frame to a color & thickness, you'll see it gets a shadow of its own, independent of the text. (Try it with dotted and dashed lines!)
Additionally, if you set the fill of your text frame to a solid color, you'll see the single solid shadow you were expecting.

  • [JS CS5] Apply XmlTag to text selection

    Hi,
Does anyone know how you can apply a XmlTag to a text selection? Currently I tried ...

                                        var myXMLroot = myDoc.xmlElements.item(0);

                                        // Doesn't work
                                        myElement.placeXML(app.selection[0]);
                                        // Doesn't work
                                        app.selection[0].markup = myElement;
What if the parent text frame has no tag applied?
    Any help would be great.
    Kind regards

  • CS5 Bridge labels. Where are they recorded and stored?

I am hoping to get some editing script developed that will make decisions based on labels in RAW files (.cr2). I am wondering where the bridge label data is stored? I understand they are not stored in xmp files and i cant see the .bridgelabels file anywhere. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes the information is stored in the xmp, and can be viewed via File Info :-

  • Need to apply labels to a list of files

I have a list of filenames that I have exported from FileMaker Pro and I want to label them in Finder so that I can collect them and send them to a client. Is there a way to automate this process?
Ideally, what I would like to do is to create a list in FileMaker (a single column table, or some such similar plain text file) and then give that list to a utility that would find the files in the list (they would all be in the same folder) and then label them, or move them, or do something to them so I can gather them in one place.
    Any ideas?
(I'm also not opposed to using FileMaker to do this somehow by interfacing with AppleScript, but that is a topic for a different forum.)
    Thanks.

You can dump the table containing filenames to a text file using the open source tool sqlitebrowser available
here. It will allow you to inspect the contents of the catalog, which is a SQLite3 database.
Install the sqlitebrowser and launch it From the sqlitebrowser program open your catalog (youcatalogname.lrcat), then use the File-Export-Table as CSV File option to export the contents of the table Adobe_imageFiles to disk. Then, bring it into Excel as a comma-delimited file. You should be in business.

  • Cannot Print Labels & Description in Photoshop CS5

It seems that trying to print a photo with Description and Labels being checked in the Output section will not happen.
Any thoughts on why this function will not work in my recent upgrade to CS5 (version 12.0 x64)?
    Thanks

We are having the exact same problem. We have multiple printers and all of them are having issues when labels are turned on in the Photoshop CS5 12.0.2 print dialog box on Mac OS 10.6.5 machines. One of our printers gives a Postscript error "Offending Command: limitcheck: yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" and stops the print. Another printer seems to ignore the Postscript error and print the image but with no labels. If we turn off the labels option, everything prints fine out of Photoshop CS5.
Interestingly, if in the Page Setup dialog box in the Print window of Photoshop CS5 I select to save as a PDF and open that PDF in Illustrator CS5, the labels shows up, but it doesn't seem to be text. It looks like an image.
Adobe Tech Support is being very unhelpful. After speaking to my 4th "Senior Level" tech they will not even test the problem on their end. Apparently no one at Adobe Tech Support has a Mac with Photoshop CS5 on it to try printing from.

  • Labels do not apply on PSD and PNG files

We have just started using Bridge CS3 at work. It seems we can't apply labels to PNG and PSD files.
Is this a known thing with Bridge, and can it be fixed?
As it's unlikely we'll be able to patch Bridge, as our IT department doesn't like that sort of thing, are there any potential workarounds?
I only have Indesign CS3 and Bridge CS3 installed on my machine - not other parts of CS3, or earlier versions of the software.
In advance, thanks for your replies.
    - Richard
    Mac OS 10.4.11
    Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    3GB RAM
    Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9
    Adobe Indesign CS3 5.0.2

Don't know about PNG's, don't have them but PSD do label fine, rating stars as well as assigning color to it.
If you have the files on your own workstation and not on a network folder and they are also not locked they should just accept labels I would think.
2.1.1.9 is the latest version so there is nothing to 'patch', but you should try a purge cache for folder option using the tools menu.
If still not able then refresh preferences with holding down option key while restarting Bridge and choose refresh preferences, after restarting Bridge reset prefs to your needs, restart Bridge again and try if you are able to label the files.
