PS CS5 messes up menu bar; dialog boxes distort during drag; etc

I'm having weird problems with Photoshop CS5.  I'd love help, or even tips for how to frame the question when searching for help.
Here are the symptoms:
- After starting PS, if I open any dialog box and then close it, after closing the PS menu bar is corrupted -- it looks like a single row of pixels is missing through the File, Edit, Image, etc words, and at the right end of the menu bar, the three control icons are overlain with Windows control icons.  Both these problems can be seen in the screen capture image below.
- When a dialog box is open, if I drag it around, it gets clipped as repainting tries to keep up with the mouse.  It's always rectangular, but edges flicker off to varying depths as it repaints to move.  When the mouse stops, the repaint works and it looks fine.  While moving, the faster the movement, the worse the effect.
- When using tools such as Lasso select, the movement feedback (the selection gray line) lags a few millimeters or more, depending on speed.
To me it looks like an application + video driver problem, but all s/w is up to date.  Messing with OpenGL setting (Edit->Preferences) doesn't affect things; it acts the same with OpenGL on or off, basic, normal, or advanced.  My video card is displayed correctly in the Edit->Preference: Performance box.
The first problem (menu bar corruption) is obviously least interfering and I believe has been with me longest.  The latter two problems make PS somewhat difficult to use, and I believe showed up in the last few months (since the last time I used PS intensively, about 8 months ago).  I can't recall for sure, but I think I installed updates to both PS and ATI drivers in the last 8 months (ie., so both could be suspects).
Any ideas what is wrong, or what to search for?  What would be a good search query for this sort of problem set?
Does this seem to be an Adobe problem, or ATI, or who?
Here's my set-up:
- Dell Inspiron 580 with 6 GB RAM
- ATI Radeon HD 5450
- Windows 7 64-bit
- PS CS5 standard edition
Thanks for help and/or ideas!

I don't know about pre-packaged themes, but what I do is along these lines:
Minimize Chrome on the Desktop
If you have a sharp monitor, good eyes, and don't like that Microsoft has made all the useless chrome and border space around everything larger in the later versions of Windows, you'll likely want to minimize it to make more room to do real work...
·    Right-click on Desktop - Personalize, ensure the Windows 7 Aero theme is selected
·    Choose Window Color – Advanced appearance settings...
·    Active Title Bar item to size 17.
·    Menu item to Size 15, font Segoe UI size 8.
·    Border Padding item to size 0.
·    Scroll Bar item to size 16.
·    Caption Buttons item to size 16.
·    Icon Spacing (Horizontal) item to size 27.
·    Icon Spacing (Vertical) item to size 41.
You can experiment with these settings to find a balance you like.
Hope this helps!

  • CS3 Fix for Spry Horizontal Menu bar/drop boxes positioning bug in IE?

    I have searched threads to see if there is an "easy" solution for the incorrect positioning of horizontal menu bar drop boxes in IE browser older versions(mine showed up at the top of the screen and mysteriously included the word "false" in older IE ONLY). Is there a downloadable patch or quick fix for this problem at this point in time? I saw an available download for a newer version of Spry but seems like overkill for this small issue. I am not an experienced web designer or computer geek, but can follow specific directions I am given. The horz bar with drop boxes showed correctly in Firefox and other browsers but not in older(?) IE. For now, I've simply removed the drop boxes to make the page look respectable, but boy did it look good with those boxes. I am hoping somebody can talk to me without lots of teckkie terms. Though I appreciate and love all of you tecs out there.

    You really should install the Spry update as it fixes some IE issues that the earlier versions of Spry had. Then use the Dreamweaver Command menu to update your Spry files within your site and you should have the latest and be ready to go. If you're still having issues you may want to also check out the Spry forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/labs/spry
    Let us know if the update doesn't solve your particular problem.

  • Photoshop CS5 32bit No HDR Pro dialog box after merge

    Hi
    I wanted to merge 3 photos using the HDR fucnction in PS CS5. Everything seems to work perfectly, I select the files and they seem to merge but at the end when the dialog box should pop up and allow me to make adjustments it just closes down. not Photoshop... but the window with whatever it is doing and leaves me with a blank normal PS screen as if I just opened up photoshop. The dialog box never appears. I tried the 64bit version and it does work normally but the 32 bit version does not. I removes any plug-ins I put there and removed my extra actions / plug-ins folder and restarted Photoshop each time but nothing made the dialog box work.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Mike, you have me at a loss.  I assume we've corresponded in the past.
    I'm sorry that I can't think of another thing to tweak in this case to see if you can get it to work.  I assume you've let it run a long time.
    Do you see any errors in your Windows System or Application Event Logs that might yield more info?

  • Messed up menu bar-

    I have certainly seen this weird menu bar before, I do remember that I found a simple fix for it. That was some years ago, but now I this same weird menu bar occurred with a client who's asking for a fix, I just cannot remember what I have possibly done to fix this weird menu bar earlier.
    My client is using Mac with Arabic language enabled, and Arabic fonts, I feel one of these could have triggered this problem.
    See the image attached please.

    As suspected it was a language matter.
    I tested dragging English language to the top of Languages list rather than Arabic in the International Preferences pane on my machine earlier, I didn't have this weird menus on my machine because I have Adobe Illustrator Middle Eastern version.
    I asked our client to do the same in the Mac OSX Preferences, their Illustrator (International English version) displays menus correctly now.

  • Labview - How to create custom menu bars, drop down menus, pop ups etc.

    Hi,
    I have  a very naive question. How does one create menu bars with custom labels (not NIs defaults), drop down / side menus, pop ups etc.?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    Search for the following on the NI website: Run-Time Menus, Run-Time Shortcut Menus.
    For pop ups, search for 'dialog' in the Examle Finder (Help -> Find Examples)

  • Time machine icon in Menu bar no longer rotates during backups

    Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, the Time Machine icon in my menu bar does not turn while it's doing a backup.  I have to click on it to see whether it's doing a backup.  This started with Mavericks, and was not fixed in 10.9.1.   Will it be addressed in 10.9.2?

    That's just the way it is now.

  • Spinning beach ball in menu bar, sys pref does not work etc

    Since last 2 days I have the following problem with Macbook:
    1. When i hover the cursor over the menu bar, the beach ball appears. this is for the Mac menu items such as Airport, Spotlight, Fast switching, time & date and also for iStatmenus. However, Little Snitch menu bar indicator is not affected
    2. Sysprefs also does not work. It opens up and immediately the beach ball appears and I can't click on any of the sys preferences
    3. If i try to watch a video, then the video will not display, though the progress indicator will happily be progressing away (QT, VLC etc)
    4. When i run in Safe mode, then everything seems to work ok (at least the menu bar, though the video part still doesn't work)
    5. And also in Normal mode, Safari/Netscape Navigator/Camino et al hang & the beach ball appears, but in safe mode they work ok though very sluggish.
    6. Though i can't be certain, I think all these problems began after iTunes crashed on me while running a podcast (?)
    I have tried everything; repair prefs and repair disk, have run Tinkertool system2 to see if that would help but to no avail. I even downloaded and installed OS X 10.6.7 Combo update-didn't do any good.

    I have been trying to deal with the same problem for the last week.
    My machine is a MBP 17" 4 GB 2.6GHz, 250 GB alluminum.
    1) I've immigrated my whole user apps and doc files to an IMAC 20" 2GB 2.66GHz 350 GB, and the system works just fine on the IMAC (I am using my system that used to be in the MBP right now).
    2) I've over written everything on the HD with zeros and have done a clean install of SNOW LEOPARD on my MBP, but as the system got loaded, already before any working files or app files have been reinstalled, the spinning beach ball appears on the upper RIGHT portion of the menu bar and makes the system inoperable.
    3) Done system update and made it into a 10.6.8 but the problem persists.
    I've basically done what Ravindra had tried.
    Please HELP.

  • CS5 save as JPG slow dialog box

    I notice when I go to file=Save As and choose JPG, PS hangs for about 4 seconds and I cannot cancel or hit OK. The annoying part is that I often click twice thinking I  missed it and end up making another change to my file with whatever tool was in use.
    Does anyone know a workaround for this?
    Using Photoshop 12.0.1 with Mac OS 10.5.8 GB Ram Quad Core

    Yes - Use Save As Jpeg on large images - there will be an unacceptable pause and delay before the dialog appears.
    There is also a problem with the Jpeg quality slider. It doesn't update properly. After a long pause, when it eventually "catches up", the slider just flicks around, with a delay in the graphics refresh. Seems to happen regardless of Open GL being on or off too. Almost unusable. Don't think I've actually seen such an obvious coding error, for a long time in Photoshop, which is usually very well tested. My guess - whoever it was who rewrote the code for that bit in the move over to Carbon, fluffed it. Problem happens in both OS's - 10.5 and 10.6
    Sort it please guys.

  • I cant' print using firefox. print preview won't display, won't print, printing dialog box won't display, etc

    Seems like since I updated to firefox 5 I can't print web pages, print preview won't work. I click on the print option under file and nothing displays or prints.

    Try the Firefox SafeMode and see if you can initiate printing from within Firefox. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
    ''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
    ''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
    If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Spry menu bar won't collapse

    When I open a page in Dreamweaver CS5.5, the menu bar code appears like this
    <script src="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <link href="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <link href="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    and further down this
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    var MenuBar1 = new Spry.Widget.MenuBar("MenuBar1", {imgDown:"../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif", imgRight:"../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});
    //-->
    </script>
    </body>
    </html>
    and the menu bar then won't collapse.
    Initially, I deleted the the ../ in front of the SpryAssets, and the problem was solved, but this no longer works.
    I would love to know why this is happening - the menu bar works on the website, just as soon as I copy them to my computer and open them in DW, I have this problem
    As a result, I can't edit/update any pages as the menu bar stops working.
    Windows 7 64 bit, Dreamweaver 5.5
    Many thanks

    It appears that I have to do this for every page, but that's not a problem as long as it works...
    Be careful. If the orginal pages had the ../ infront of them when you took over the site then this means the pages were stored in a sub-folder of the site. If youre moving those pages to a different location within your site folder then make sure that the other links on your page work too because storing them in a different location within the site folder will break the links.
    If you do move pages within your site folder do it through the site files panel then Dreamweaver will ask if you want to update the links if you move the pages to another place in the site folder.

  • Spry menu bar widget

    Having followed instructions from web sites and
    books I still can't modify the rollover background colour away from
    the purple. It must be something basic but I'm stumped. I can
    change the style of the menu bar in other ways - text, colour etc
    but whatever I try, when I preview in Safari I still get the purple
    rollover colour. Help

    You cannot center a CSS horizontal list unless you assign
    fixed widths to
    each root level LI and then you can use Joe's suggestion by
    assigning a
    width to the outer wrapper that is equal to the aggregate of
    the root LI
    widths (adjusted for box-model). If the root level LIs are
    set to an auto
    width, then you will be able to center the menu construct but
    the first LI
    will be aligned at the left edge of the centered box.

  • "PDF Modification Detected" dialog box

    When I attempt to open certain PDFs in Illustrator (up to and including CS5.1), I get a dialog box with the title 'PDF Modification Detected' and the text 'This document has been modified outside of Adobe Illustrator.'
    I can't work out what it is about these PDFs that causes this dialog box to open (most PDFs don't cause it, including ones that have been edited using programs other than Illustrator). Discarding changes does indeed discard certain changes.
    The dialog box appears even where the file is opened using a script that suppresses dialogs. This together with the icon makes me think that this is a really old piece of code that's being triggered in a different way from most dialogs.  Does anyone have any idea of what causes this dialog to appear, and if there's any way to take it into account (e.g. setting a default answer) in scripting or batch processing?

    It could be that this is just caused by out-of-sync timestamps on the file.
    But possibly you've got a bigger problem. PDFs generated by Illustrator may in fact contain two files: a PDF and an AI. WHen you open them in Illustrator, the AI will be edited (and the PDF will be updated when saving). When opening them in other software, the PDF part will be edited (and the AI won't be updated). Illustrator realizes this and warns you.
    You know your files, you'll have to find out what happened.

  • 'MobileMe / Sync Now' menu bar item

    A MobileMe / Sync Now icon has appeared on my menu bar in Finder (2 semicircular clockwise arrows), which I am unable to remove. I cannot see a check box in System Preferences>MobileMe giving me the option to show / remove this icon. Is there another way of doing this?

    Launch iSync and open its preferences. You should see an option to "Show status in menu bar". You can also often remove items from the right side of the menu bar by doing a command-drag.
