PS CS6 beta - background saving is stucked or...

Hi guys,
OS: Win 7 Pro x64, Dual Xeon X5650, 96GB RAM, Disks: OS:480GB/270free 16TB/12TB free Disk storage, 1TB/700gb free Scratch disk,
I have been sitting and working on some tiff files (10) and when I got to the last one, and finished my work and started to save it, its stuck at 34%, I can still make duplicates of the file within PS, which will save just fine.
Interestingly, while I did the screen shot, it when to 0% again, and is still at zero % while typing this
Any ideas anyone? I do have the Photoshop edit log on! if that is any help..... it states that it has PSAutoRecovered the file... when I looked at the PSAutoRecovered folder there wasn't a copy of the file, only that document that I created last which is the attached image
thanks
Henrik
PS: Terminated PS via Task Manager.... start again no big deal

Further Noel... just tried setting the predetermined box in pixels... same problem...
What seems to happen is that the largest dimension reverts to the image boundary, while the smaller dimension crops into the image. This despite my setting the ppi to 300 - the same as the image's ppi.
The way i look at it, when i set a predertimed size, the crop box should be at that size... particularly, as you suggested, when i have pixels selected as my dimensions. And my rulers are also set to pixels.
The latest attempt as follows:
1. Image size is 20.32 x 26.14cm @300ppi (2400x3087 pixels)
2. Crop size is set to 1831 x 2776 pixels (ppi setting enabled to 300 and rulers are also in pixels)
What happens is the crop box defaults to the full height of the image and crops in at the sides. Info box shows: W:1831, H: 2776. But it's encomapssing the full 3087 pixels (height) of the original image.
The way i look at it i should get a crop box that is smaller than the image and now should be able to move the image around to gt th crop i want. This way i still have to crop into the image and it's then resampling the image.
Cheers...

  • Background saving bug CS6 (stalls)

    Background saving bug CS6
    Problem:
    1. Was Editing a rather large and complex file, 16bit, 1,6GB
    2. Pressed ctr+s to save the progress
    3. Immediately launched a 3rd party plugin, Niksoft Define 2 (I mean with two keyboard shortcuts in a row, within seconds of each other)
    4. Plugin started
    5. Background saving got stuck at 0% and went nowehere as the plugin launched.
    6. No progress on the background saving after the plugin exited, and not able to save as a new file because PS said it was already saving the file. After 20 minutes still no progress. Taskmanager showed PS using 0% CPU and no disk i/o activity even though it stated it was saving.
    Workaround
    1. Duplicated the entire psb to a new file inside photoshop.
    2. Saved and it worked fine.
    3. Had to terminate photoshop via the task manager as it wouldnt let me exit "before file saving was complete".
My workflow here was probably a bit quick and "incosiderate", but I would still consider this behaviour  a PS bug - I mean whats the use of background saving if it stalls when you are doing other tasks. Anyone else experienced this?
    (OS W7 x64+PS CS6 EXT)

I have experienced this bug many times and it is very frustrating. There is no pattern to when it will happen it just happens out of the blue, I work full time commercially in 8, 16 and 32 bit regularly, file sizes averaging 5gb sometimes much larger and the bug has occurred in all these instances. I have however made these observations:
The original PS version with bg save had this fault and to my knowledge there was no easy work around apart from a very laborious process of Scripts/Export layers to files. Any duplication and resave of the document did not work as it was held in a queue behind the first file stuck on 0%
The next version of PS, CC and possibly first release of 2014, had a work around as suggested by someone else, by simply duplicating the file and saving. This would then jump the queue of the first file which was stuck on 0%.
The latest version of CC 2014 updated a couple of days ago has resorted to the first patten, i.e. duplicate and save but stuck in the queue, thus no work around.
This is a very serious problem which has gone on a bit too long. I am prompted to write this because it happened to me again last night whilst working on a 6gb 32bit render layer file, costing me a fair bit of time and effort on a commercial job.
I always use bg save and 10mins recovery, when the problem occurs I am able to use PS as if nothing has happened but unfortunately cannot save, I am thus forced to force quit the application. Unfortunately in this instance the force quit is not seen by PS as a crash and therefore offers no file recovery. What I think we need is the following:
The ability to force abort a save of the stuck file so that we can save another.
The ability to access background saved files even if PS has not actually crashed, this would have saved me last night.
In addition, a 5-10gb file takes a while to background save, during this save I cannot make a smart object. I would like to be able to pause a save so that I can make the smart object and then carry on my work whilst the save continues. This applies to recovery save also.
Adobe please help us out and address the problem.
    Many thanks, Mark.

  • CS6 Beta ended by crash - How/Where to keep my Auto-Saved Recovered file ?

    Hello,
I was working on Photoshop CS6 beta on Lion OSX since one month with no problem.
Yesterday seemed to be the last day of use (1st june annonced however) and Photoshop CS6 Beta shutted down since I was working on it.
On the re-opening it asks for a licence key so I try to buy one month rental on the e-shop but the 3 bank cards tested failed. So I gave a call to the commercial service and they told me that they do not take in charge rental but only full licence and that I can download the trial for one more month if I want to.
So, I will replace the beta by the trial.
    But :
    - How can I keep my Auto-saved Recovered file I was working on when crashing (pretty important work)
    - Where the recovered file is saved on the hard-drive ? And, can I make it works whith CS6 non-beta ?
A lot of thanks in advance for your help.
    Kind Regards

As I understand it - having not (fortunatley) had the opportunity to test this - if PS crashes and you have auto-save switched on, you need to re-launch PS and it will automatically open with the recovered file(s) in the state they were at when auto-save last saved them. Auto-save stores files temporarily in a special folder that's located at the same file path as your scratch disk location. (My scratch disk is at root level on a seperate drive, so it's easy to see the auto-save folder if I look there, but if you can locate your scratch disk, you should see the auto-save folder also.)
Of course, the fact that you can no longer open PS is going to present a problem here. I'm not sure if you could re-access the file via the trial version once that was installed and pointing to the same scratch disk area.
I might have got this wrong, but I think it's correct... Feel free to disprove my post!

  • CS6 beta locks up when saving portrait files

I've had an issue with the CS6 beta.  It doesn't happen every time, but it has happened at least 5 times.
When I have been editing portraits in CS6, occasionally when I flatten an image and then go to save it, the program will lock up with the 'save as' window frozen on my screen. I can move my mouse around, but it won't click on anything photoshop related.  I can pull up Safari, or go to other programs... but CS6 is jammed. Fortunately, CS6 has a recovery feature, and I haven't totally lost my work (only the layers of the other opened files, which could obviously present a problem).   I think it might happen if I click in the 'Save as'  box within a few second of it opening  when I go to rename a file - If I wait a while longer, maybe 10 seconds longer after the 'Save as' window pops up, it seems to avoid the issue.
It seems to happen when I am working on multiple images (more than one portrait open at a time).
Also, now when I am running Portrait Professional through cs6, my macbook gets very hot... it never did that before.
This issue has happened on my macbook pro, Mac OS X,  version 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 2 cores, 8 GB memory.

I am not that familiar with OS dialog, and bad disk data structure...  but I am not doing anything different than I normally do.
When I flatten my image and go to File/Save, and the standard little window pops up - and I click inside the Save As text bar at the very top to give the file a name - cs6 locks up at that point.  Each time this has happened, I have not selected a new location, I merely clicked in the Save As text box... but could do nothing else from that point on. When I click file/save as, when the window pops up- The current file name inside the text window always appears highlighted in blue - indicating that it is selected and ready for re-naming, when I click on that to rename it, that is when it locks up. The letters remain highlighted in blue... just frozen to the cursor.  I can't get photoshop to 'hide' at this point either, if I go to Photoshop/hide photoshop.
I will check out the DiscUtility idea, but I do a lot of work on this computer, and have never ever had this issue until cs6 beta, and only when I am on cs6 beta. The few times that I have used cs5 since I downloaded cs6 beta it hasn't done it.
These files that I am working on don't have any issues after I force quite cs6 beta and reopen them. The only thing that I can determine might be causing it, is clicking in the box too soon... like I have to give it 10 seconds to get its act together to "save as' another name. It might be preparing a file thumbnail... that makes sense, but it is taking an unusual amount of time.  I have tons of memory, so it doesn't need help in that department.
Beside this issue, I really like the look and feel of cs6.

  • FAQ: What are the known issues so far in Photoshop CS6 Beta

    APPLICATION  COEXISTENCE
Lightroom 4 Beta + Photoshop CS6 beta -- Editing the same video file simultanously in both applications may result in an error, crash, or blank (transparent) frames. You might see this Photoshop error: "Could not complete the Render Video command because of a problem with Adobe Media Encoder".
This will only be an issue with Lightroom 4 beta and Photoshop CS6 beta on the same system, editing the same video. The released versions will not have this issue.
Workaround: Upgrade to LR Release version (even if it's just the trial), or don't open the same file in both apps at the same time.
CS5 Help fails to launch after install of CS6
Workaround: Launch the stand alone "Adobe Help" application or reinstall CS5
    CROP
Crop action shows wrong crop box.Playing an action with a crop step that has dialogs turned on results in a crop box that covers the entire canvas instead of the expected area.
Workaround: Ensure that the Crop Tool is selected before running the action or disable dialogs for the action.
    FILTERS
(32bit OS only) Initial "Merge to HDR Pro" image display and result is black until settings are changed
Workaround: It will remain black until droplist in the "mode" line is selected, changed and activated, then action appears to be normal.
Bokeh color is different from preview after render at certain zoom levels on particular image patterns
    Workaround: View image at 100%
Lighting effects bump map generates artifacts if an alpha channel bump map is used. The resulting preview and final image is artifacted across the gradiated areas of the alpha channel.
Workaround: Do not use a gradiated alpha channel as a bump map
Liquify will perform the filter and save to just part of the photo if you click cancel while it is "finishing processing" a large file.
    LAYERS
If a vector layer has a center-aligned stroke combined with an inside-aligned layer style stroke, then that vector layer's stroke may not display correctly -- part of the vector layer stroke will disappear as the layer is moved around the image.
Workaround: Use the "Path Selection Tool" to move your vector around -- alternatively, Change the stroke alignment or remove underlying layers.
Dragging a selection box while layer filters are applied stops marquee selection from following cursor movement
Workaround: Even though the graphic of the selection marquee stops, the selection still happens. OR Turn off layer filtering before targeting the layers using a selection box
    TYPE
Editing text attributes in the Character panel when the layer is locked can result in a crash
Workaround: Unlock your text layer prior to attribute adjustments in the Character panel
Setting the menu type>font>preview size to "huge" after opening a saved file caused photoshop to crash
Workaround: Uncheck Background save in Photoshop CS6
Style by example or definition not working as expected:
If any attribute in the Paragraph Panel is set and you create a new Paragraph Style, the new style is based on the default and the override is not cleared.
    DRAWING AND PAINTING
Paint is offset with Grip Pen- if you select the Soft Low Density Airbrush Preset with Grip Pen paint with swicth facing right with a high tilt towards you the cursor shows the spray should be going up, but it sprays down.
    3-D
Creating a video timeline and rendering video from two 3D layers may not include ground plane reflections
Workaround: Use mesh for ground plane instead of 3D engines construct, or duplicate the file and remove the keyframes
Creating a New background texture after changing lighting presets results in crash
Workaround: Create the New background texture prior to adjusting lighting presets
Unable to create a constraint on extruded object with Pillow Inflate setting applied. Further actions may result in Photoshop instability or crash.
Photoshop may crash when trying to align/distribute constraints from selections of two 3-D extruded objects
Photoshop may not always save a texture when you paint directly onto the 3d object using Paint on Target Texture setting.
Photoshop may crash when selecting a different panel filter after the focus has been on 2 fields in the environment flyout with IBL map present
Photoshop may crash after embedding a 3D layer into a layer group, creating a new 3d object in the group, and then closing the document.
When changing the color of the lines or points in the 3D scene cross section from the Properties panel, side b color overwrites the color in side A.
Program Error when adjusting fill value in Layers panel while in Lighting Effects workspace.
Workaround:You will have to use opacity slider instead of fill slider to pull back the lighting effect
    PLUGINS
DUPLICATE PLUGINS CAUSE ISSUES ON MAC:
If you install duplicate plugins or point the additional plugins folder preferences to a duplicate set of plugins (such as, to an older version of Photoshop), then it is possible for odd Photoshop behavior, such as an inappropriate file extension to appear when saving files.
(example: while performing a "save as"  to JPEG file type, the file format appears to change to .dcm)
In this case, there may be a duplicate "file formats" plugin that's populating the Save As file types list with duplicates of the same options.
If there are duplicate file format plugins installed, the Mac OS will remove the duplicates from the list, but you may still see the odd saving behavior.
    Solution:
    Remove the duplicate plugins.
If you are not sure if you have this issue, but are seeing odd behavior, you can check for duplicates by looking through the plugins listed in the Help > System Info dialog.
    Bridge
Unable to Copy and Paste in File info in Bridge
Workaround: Typing info in Manually works, or copy and paste work in Photoshop's File Info dialog
    Install
Adobe Setup Utility may quit, or error during install. You may see error: "Exit Code: 15"
Workaround: Create a folder named 'Templates' at "<Windows drive>:\Users\<current user login id>\AppData\Roaming\Micorsoft\Windows\"
Message saying trial of PS CS6 beta expired,Content coming soon, stay tuned.
Workaround: re-launch photoshop CS6 beta. This issue should not happen anymore

    1. You can get full support for your camera by upgrading to Lightroom 4. But personally, I would wait for Lightroom 5 since it will be released shortly, probably within the next month. Lightroom 5 will work with Photoshop CS5. The only difference is that Lightroom will need to create a TIF or PSD file that contains all the changes you have made in Lightroom. That's not a big deal, in my opinion. That file has to be created at some point anyway whenever you use Photoshop.
    2. Yes, Lightroom 4 will pass images back and forth between it and Photoshop.
    3.  The upgrade would not break Lightroom 3. It would essentially work the same as it does with your current setup.
    4. If you purchase CS6 it is my understanding you will be allowed to use it indefinitely. This is not true of the Creative Cloud version. Support and updating for additional cameras will cease for CS6. Adobe has announced that they will make Camera Raw 8.1 so that it can be usable with CS6 as far as reading Lightroom adjustments. But any new controls will not be accessible.
    5. So far, Adobe has indicated that they have no plans to making Lightroom a subscription-only offering.
You are asking your questions as though you are addressing Adobe directly. This is a User-to-user forum. I don't work for nor do I speak for Adobe. I am only giving you the information as I understand it. It seems to me that upgrading to Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 is a "safe" choice. None of us, not even Adobe, really knows what the future will bring. Technology changes so quickly anymore that everything we are doing right now could be obsolete in a matter of a very short period of time. As Adobe changes their marketing strategies I think it will probably motivate some people to look elsewhere. I have Photoshop CS6 and I'm going to upgrade to Lightroom 5. Then I will have to wait and see what develops after that. At any rate, I have tools that I can use for the foreseeable future. If I have to change at some point then I will do so.

  • CS6 Beta first impressions

Here is a list of things I noticed during a first test drive of the Photoshop CS6 Beta. This is a mixture of feature requests, bug reports and general observations. I just typed this up as I went along. I'm sorry I don't have enough time to file proper bug reports and feature requests, but I though this might still be useful feedback. These things are in no particular order (well, except in the order I noticed them), and I'm sure there are a quite a few grammar/spelling errors, but right now that's all the time I can invest, sorry.
And even though this all sounds really negative (I basically just listed the annoying points since a list of good thigs probably isn't very useful), I am quite happy with the new version, congratulations to the team! I love the cat graphic on the splash screen by the way.
All these things were tested on a MacBook (2008 I think) with OS X Snow Leopard and 8 GB of RAM. So here you go:
Ctrl+Some Key still not available as shortcuts (e.g. Cmd+H Hide Photoshop, Ctrl+H Hide Extras)
The aesthetic merit of the font choice in the about box/splash screen is debatable
Despite all the vector enhancements, Spacebar+drag still doesn't work in the Pen tool like it does in other Adobe applications
Paragraph and Character style definitions apparently cannot be shared with InDesign or Illustrator so far. There is no way to link to external style definition files, and no way to import or export. Since all these applications use the same text engine, this seems like a missed opportunity, requiring a lot of duplicate work on the user's part (not as much as in previous versions, though)
The title bar of the document window uses the system title bar and thus does not match the overall interface skin. If that is set to dark (which is the default), it calls attention to itself.
There is no way to hide the filter bar in the layers panel, making it waste screen space on laptop screens when it is not needed.
The Warp option in Free Transform was updated to add GPU acceleration, which is great. That would have been a perfect opportunity to make the number of subdivisions user-adjustable.
There are lots of new vector features. This would have been a perfect opportunity to integrate After Effects' mask and shape system (including effects like repeaters), resulting in increased compatibility for importing Photoshop files into AE. Besides, all enhancements would pay off double since two applications would benefit from them. That would also have added the option to feather vector shapes for use as soft vector masks (Photoshop's mask feather function seems to perform a blur and thus is significantly slower, plus it applies globally to all paths in the mask). Still, the vector features are very well implemented, even though Fireworks still seems to have a slight edge.
The red "active" indicator on the layers panel filter bar calls attention to itself. The entire application uses grayscale icons. While I can see why this indicator needs to be obvious, I think that is too much.
The "Scripted Pattern" function is not very intuitive to use without any kind of preview. Also, it is not really clear how to create your own scripts, edit the existing ones or even just adjust parameters.
The Fill dialog in general takes too many clicks with that popup menu. Using icons or something similar would save a lot of mouse miles/clicks.
There is still no way to directly load 50% gray as the foreground/background color. In photo retouching etc., this comes up a lot. Adding a little icon to the color picker in the toolbox with the ability to assign a shortcut would help a lot. Waiting for this since version 5 or so...
Curves still doesn't support editing the layer's alpha channel nor LAB mode (at least not without converting the entire document to LAB mode or a smart object).
The "File Info" is still the ugly inefficient Flash monster where everything takes ten times as long to do than it did with the old dialog it replaced a few versions back (mouse wheel doesn't work on tabs, text editing shortcuts are different/don't work, tabs instead of the InDesign-like list of categories and many more). Photomerge is still ugly, but at least it doesn't have such major usability issues. The interface is inconsistent enough already, why do these have to be Flash?!
Shift key during canvas rotation to constrain angles still only works when using the tool but is ignored when using a multitouch pad gesture
The minimum size on the new "Adjustments" panel is larger than necessary
There still seems to be no option to not hide all panels when activating another application, causing that visual jump and slight desorientation every time
That new pen tool cursor is huge
There are still no Lightroom-like info bubbles or indicator icons (like LR's process version upgrade warning) for entering Quick Mask, toggling Softproofing etc. that would alert the user when accidental keystrokes
Photoshop doesn't seem to ask the user to automatically migrate settings and presets from any previous version on first launch. The migrate presets function does nothing (don't know if this is an issue related to the computer I am testing this on).
The "Blend RGB Colors using Gamma" feature in the color management settings still seems to be global and not per document (not 100% sure, though). This results in files being displayed differently on different computers, which is not a good idea.
The line-based warping in "Adaptive Wide Angle" is only available within that filter as far as I can tell. This is a missed opportunity IMO. Being able to specify arbitrary source and destination paths to that algorithm would make for a very powerful warping tool.
I'm not exactly sure what caused it, but I managed to accidentally disable path anti-aliasing and I can't seem to find a way to switch it on again. No combinations in the GPU preferences under "Performance", including switching GPU acceleration off completely, restored it. This is either a bug or a usability problem. Personally, I think the option to antialias paths and guides should be located in the View menu, not hidden in the GPU preferences.
In the settings for a LUT adjustment layer, clicking any of the radio buttons will automatically pop up a file selection dialog, even if my intention was to use one of the presets. That file selection dialog also gives me no clue which file formats are supported (i.e the regular format popup is missing).
Both Cmd+Space and the zoom tool itself now seem to behave identically. There is no more way to drag a box, except to switch off "Scrubby Zoom" altogether. Using both methods in parallel (as I would prefer) is unfortunately no longer possible as far as I can tell.
The brush cursor in Liquify is always dark, making it hard to see on black surfaces for instance. "Advanced Mode" is also off by default. Since the entire thing is in a huge dialog box (a solution like Blur Gallery's interface would seem like a better way to do this by the way), there is no real benefit to hiding these controls since there are no UI elements that would benefit from the additional space. It just requires an additional click.
The Liquify preview flickers as I am typing this in a TextEdit window that is floating above it
Select > Color Range would benefit from buttons with icons for preview mode instead of a dropdown. Same for Curves (tabs would probably be best in that case, but at least we have the shortcuts for now)
The "Sample all Layers" option vanishes when switching the Patch tool from "Content Aware" to "Normal"
That's it for now, thanks for listening.

@Chris Cox: I didn't mean post professionals who probably answered your surveys, but cinematographers and the like who currently simply deliver JPEGs of their desired look as far as I know, not colorists and effects artists using Photoshop to generate their look. But I'm no expert on those workflows, and I completely agree, a third party solution for LUT export is probably the best way to implement such a workflow.
@c.pfaffenbichler: Most professionals are still working predominantly in a semi-destructive way (i.e. using layers). Smart objects are too much hassle for most things (especially not being able to see your changes in context when editing them), so keeping an original layer and re-applying a filter is still very common.
Seeing that Blur Gallery can export a channel, that actually makes it quite useful, contrary to my initial assessment. Even though the interface is currently not optimized for this, it looks like Blur Gallery is a great quick and easy way to generate layer masks for color corrections.
@TLL..: Professionals will always buy their software. And those people who don't won't make that decision dependent on the licensing model. Very few of those who pirate programs are actually lost customers who don't buy software because they found a way can get it for free. It just doesn't work that way even though many companies would like to think it does. Most people simply wouldn't buy the software if piracy was not an option, with price being the deciding factor. The question is simply how spread-out the transition area inbetween is. I don't have Adobe's research data, though, so I can't comment on their specific case (I'd guess Photoshop is one of the most pirated programs, though), but I don't think threatening them with piracy is going to be that effective, they probably have someone who does nothing else all day than figure out smart ways to optimize these kinds of things for maximum profit
Just as a side note, in some cases piracy actually works in a company's favor. Microsoft owed much of its market dominance in their early days to the fact that unlike the competition their software was not copy protected and thus became much more widely used than comparable solutions, leading to much higher sales than copy protection could ever have given them.
Don't get me wrong, I am in no way defending piracy here, of course, I just think it's interesting from a strategic perspective. On the other hand, Photoshop is quite well known and doesn't have any real competition, so that probably defeats my point. Anyway, moving on.
I had a chance to play with the Beta again today for about an hour, and here are a few more things I found (again, a mixture of bugs, features I had hoped for, quirks etc. that I noticed and jotted down as I went along):
The new in-place/on-canvas filters like Blur Gallery use an OK/Cancel button combination to exit the semi-modal state, which is inconsistent with all the existing semi-modal tools like Crop and Free Transform (which continue to use the checkmark system).
Panel groups can no longer be collapsed by double clicking in the free area next to the tabs, only the tabs themselves. Not sure if that is intended behavior or a bug.
Most panels seem to be docked below the Brushes panel by default for some reason so that showing any of these panels will also automatically bring up the much larger Brushes panel.
ExtendScript Toolkit always crashes when switching to the "Fonts and Colors" tab in Preferences. This behavior can be reproduced every time. Unless this is related to a specific configuration, I can't imagine how this could have slipped through during QA/internal testing.
There is currently no documentation for the APIs for the new Deco patterns, at least I was not able to find any, but I guess this is going to change in the release build.
The Displace filter is still stuck in the early nineties (no preview, not accepting channels but using separate map files etc.). Displace is one of the most used filters in photo post production and image compositing.
When placing files, it is never made 100% clear to the user which files/file types are linked to and which ones are embedded. An option to choose and possibly even a links panel like in InDesign and Illustrator would be useful.
For placed videos (which seem to be linked to rather than embedded), the link seems to consist of just an absolute path (heard about this problem somewhere else, didn't have a chance to verify). I'd suggest storing both relative and absolute paths and if one fails to match, try the other before requesting a manual relink.
The properties panel displays an unnecessary vertical scrollbar for Curves adjustment layers that just scrolls down to some empty space below
The Timeline panel flyout menu has lost the "Document Settings" command. There now seems to be no reasonably obvious way to set the overall animation duration. There is also no "Trim Animation to Work Area" command. New layers seem to always use some kind of default duration, not the duration of the current timeline sequence.
The segments in the animation timeline are a very vibrant color (at least on a wide gamut monitor). Ideally, they should at least match the color palette established by the blue selection highlight color, the ok buttons in the options bar and the render progress bar (which I really like). Strongly colored UI elements affect the perception of color in the image. Autodesk Smoke/Flame does a great job of using a non-obtrusive color palette in its interface.
The "Set Current Time" dialog box that pops up when double-clicking the timecode display in the bottom area of the Timeline panel does not support pressing the escape key to cancel if the text field has the focus. Pressing Tab doesn't seem to change the focus either. Pressing down on the OK button, holding and dragging out of it doesn't hide the selection in the text field, but the escape key now works as expected. The return key works as expected in all situations, no matter which control has the focus.
The "Split Clip" button doesn't seem to work well with the undo system. The corresponding menu bar item (Edit > Undo Split Clip) is sometimes grayed out. Switching to another application and back to Photoshop seems to re-enable the menu item in some cases. The grayed-out menu item obviously also blocks out the use of the corresponding hotkey (Cmd+Z in the default configuration).
Dragging transitions to clips sometimes has no effect. I can't give a specific combination of things that cause this behavior, but it seems to be a per-document issue. If it kicks in, transition dragging doesn't work at all, i.e. it is always all segments in a particular timeline that don't accept transitions, not just individual ones. The dragging process happens as expected, but basically, the segments don't highlight under the mouse, nor do they accept the transition.
Keyframe interpolations are limited to "Linear" and "Hold". A minimalistic "Smooth" option would be really useful, and it wouldn't have a noticeable impact on the complexity of the video timeline feature for novice users. I'm no AE expert, but I believe it has a feature called "Easy easy" keyframes, too, giving you smooth interpolation without manually adjusting the bézier animation curves.
The horizontal scroll bar on the Timeline panel always shows some extra empty space, like the Properties panel for Curves. There is also no obvious "Zoom Timeline to Fit All" function (a toggle between 100% and the last zoom position would make sense, I think this is also how Avid implemented it in Media Composer).
3D layer rendering still isn't really a background thread and almost all interactions with the applications cancel the render operation.
Vector shapes unfortunately only support plain vector outline strokes instead of allowing the user to apply any of the brush presets (or even use any of the settings inside the "Stroke Path" command, which would enable things like smearing using vector shapes). In my opinion, that is really the missed opportunity for additional usefulness that vector support in a pixel-based application can offer. I know the vector shapes feature is aimed at designers who don't want to switch between Photoshop and Illustrator for every single vector task, but that would have been a way to make that feature much more relevant for more than just the screen design demographic.
The beta doesn't ship with the Pixel Bender filter, which I hope is going to change with the final build. That filter needs some work compared to CS5 (supporting the AE user control fields, supporting high-resolution images at least in CPU mode, channels as input images, color management issues, etc.) The CS5 release still feels very much like Alpha software (Pixel Bender Toolkit is even worse).
The 3D camera has no on-screen widget to specify depth of field distance settings or even locking them to an object (similar to an aimed camera in compositing programs and 3D software). The sliders are also sometimes quite laggy, ideally all sliders should be completely interactive with only the render lagging behind. A slider that sticks jumps around while the software is rendering can be quite frustrating for a user (Lightroom has had that problem for a long time).
The "Sketch" render presets seem to give incorrect results (i.e. results that have nothing to do with the 3D object, just a bunch of semi-random shapes and rectangles. The render button is also completely disabled. There also seems to be no way to activate the "Sketch" setting except through the presets.
The fact that Content Aware Move allows the user to change the Adaptation setting after the fact is not very discoverable and inconsistent with both the other tools and apparently even the behavior of the Mode setting on the same tool. I'd suggest giving the tool a pseudo-modal state like the crop and free transform tools instead.
The lorem ipsum command is called "Paste Lorem Ipsum". The use of the term "Paste" here is potentially confusing since it has nothing to do with the system clipboard. "Insert" would be a better choice of words in my opinion. Also, the same command inside InDesign is called "Fill with Placeholder Text", so you may want to consider using that for cross-application consistency.
On the 2008 generation MacBook I was able to test this on, Liquify always launches in CPU mode (1 pixel black border around the preview image). Not sure if the GPU in that system is simply not supported. I suggest showing an unobtrusive information note somewhere (maybe below the settings), like "GPU acceleration for this filter is not supported on this hardware configuration". Like the "Efficiency" setting in the document window status bar, this would help users identify potential performance bottlenecks on their systems. The black border is just not very discoverable.
The improvements to text (paragraph/character styles etc.) would make a glyphs panel like in InDesign and Illustrator a logical addition (saves unnecessary copy & paste operations).
It seems that multiple clips in the Animation Timeline cannot be trimmed at the same time, even if they are both selected.
The "Show Asian Text Options" checkbox seems to have disappeared from Preferences. Things like the Warichu option still seems to be Illustrator-only, even though it is incredibly useful for other things beyond what it was intended for (movie poster-style credits are the most popular example, but there are many more). Also, it seems illogical that you would have to choose between either of the text engines available, but I guess this is required by historical engineering decisions.
Panels still can only be docked to the edges of the primary monitor. Docking is not available on secondary monitors. On Windows, docking only works inside the main window, no matter on which screen. I know this is standard behavior, but I never really understood the logic behind that.
    Hope this is useful.

  • I'm having trouble installing CS6 beta;

I'm having trouble installing CS6 beta; when I try, it says to close background processes - specifically Bridge, which is NOT open. In fact, I just turned the computer on and tried to install what was dowloaded last night. Any ideas?

Are you on Mac or windows?
If you check the Task manager in Win (CTRL+Shift+Esc), or the ForceQuit applications dialog (CMD+Opt+ESC) do you see any Bridge, or other Adobe applications running?

  • FAQ: Can I use the Photoshop CS6 beta in my production environment?

Although some may find the Photoshop CS6 beta quality good enough to use in a production environment, the nature of beta software is that it is not production quality, so not everything may work as expected. Customers should be aware that Adobe will not offer any technical support for the Photoshop CS6 beta.

Please quit/close Lightroom 4, and any other Adobe software on your system, prior to installing the Photoshop CS6 Extended Beta:
If you encounter the dialog (below) that references the background process named 'dynamiclinkmanager' during installation, please quit Lightroom 4, and any other Adobe software on your system. Then click [Continue] to continue the installation of Adobe Photoshop CS6:

  • Bug Report: unable to install CS6 beta

I downloaded and unzipped CS6 beta and installation started OK but gave an error that Photoshop Bridge was running and should be closed.  I closed it and got an error that some background programs were running that should be closed.  Not knowing which of the very many background programs were affecting the installation, I closed Windows and rebooted.  Now the installion program consistently fails to initialize.  I have done system restore and downloaded and unzipped CS6 beta again and nothing enables installation to continue.  I am using Windows 7 Professional (with and without Virtual XP running) on a Dell Inspiron laptop.  Any cures for this?

  • CS6 beta speed

One question about CS6 - I'm using beta now and really disappointed with speed of saving files in ACR module. If in CS5 it was 4 files in row and my 2600K was loaded at 96 - 98%  constantly - in CS6 beta its one file and CPU load jumping from 50 to 90% result -  2 or 3 hours to save 1500 files against one hour or less in CS5 (same PC - near top - 2600K 16 Gb RAM, SSD SLC for system, adobe cache on 10K rpm WD  HDD, Win 7 64 bit). What about commercial version?

The new Camera Raw is a little slower to do the actual conversions - no question.
I expect the improved conversion quality (e.g., more perfect CA removal, better shadow/highlight retention, etc.) to come at some computational cost...  There's no reason to think that everything that's newer should also be faster, especially not when it has new features and produces better results.  You can be sure the previous versions were highly optimized, making them tough to beat.
I have several versions of Photoshop on the same workstation, a dual quad core Xeon x5460 system (8 cores total)...  Here's a comparison of my conversion times:
    Times to convert 50 Canon .CR2 raw files converted to 6144 x 4096 x 16 bits/channel PSD files:
Photoshop CS6 x64, Camera Raw 7.1 RC set for PV2012:  237 seconds (4.7 seconds per file)
Photoshop CS5 x64, Camera Raw 6.7 set for PV2010:  159 seconds (3.2 seconds per file)
    Photoshop CS4 x64, Camera Raw 5.7: 103 seconds (2.1 seconds per file)
Each file in the newer version seems to take about 1.5 times as long as the previous version to convert, which is quite acceptable from my perspective given the increases in image quality.
Guess we're going to have to start thinking of dumping these old, slow systems and getting some really powerful computers.

  • PS CS6 BETA, Mac OS Lion: How to paint without the transfer attribute.

PS CS6 BETA, Mac OS Lion: When I want to paint with a brush without the transfer attribute so that I get flat paint without opacity change I uncheck the option box however it rechecks itself after I make a stroke, why...is this just a bug? It shouldn't work this way.

I have a set of brushes that I always use and one is set for NO TRANSFER so that I can paint flatly.  I'm using an Intuous 4  Wacom tablet.  After attempting to use my brush it did not  give me the flat paint I wanted.  I opened the brushes pallette and noticed that the transfer attribute was on(thought to myself that shouldn't be on because this brush is saved to work with it off).  I turned off the attribute and began to paint only to find that the transfer opacity attribute was sitll in affect.  I turned it off again and WATCHED the brush pallette and saw that without me selecting that checkbox it rechecked itself.  I restarted PS multiple times( the cmd+opt+shift did not do anything after holding it on launch, the Adobe trial dialog box pops up).  I did a test on ALL brushes available and they alll seem to be FORCED into the transfer attribute! I tested it with my mouse and FINALLY the brush painted FLAT so perhaps it is linked to the pressure sensitive pen??(WHICH IS NOT HOW IT IS IN CS5)  In CS5 I was able to select a flat brush and paint flat without having to press down with the full pressure.  As I continued testing solutions the issue changed slightly... Now all of the brushes have the transfer attribute whether the checkbox is on or off.  I would uncheck the box and paint and not get my flat paint but the box would not recheck itself but rather certain actions would cause it to recheck itself such as Fill canvas, hold opt for eyedropper, hold comand for move tool, switching between tools.. it's weird and unexplainable.. Basically it didn't matter if the box was checked or not because no matter what the attribute was autoomatically on every brush.  Please tell me this can be fixed because it is vital to digital painting workflow especially if you prefer firmer wacom pen settings and do not want to have to press all the way for flat color.
    Thank you

  • Anyone Have both Lightroom 4 and Ps CS6 beta?

Specifically, a friend of mine is reporting relatively sluggish performance with Lightroom 4 and I am seeing light, fast performance with Photoshop CS6's Camera Raw 7...  Maybe it's not butter smooth, but my preview display in Camera Raw definitely keeps up in near real-time with slider movements.  Our computers, per their Windows WEI scores, aren't too different in performance.
Apparently LR4 is MUCH slower for him than the prior version.
Should Lightroom be expected to be much slower than its predecessor version and Camera Raw 7?  Or is there a bug being worked on?
I've stopped short of running the Lightroom evaluation version as I am happy with what I have.
Thanks for any insights you can share.
    -Noel

Most likely the reason for the color difference has to do with your working color space. Lightroom doesn't allow you to chose your working colorspace (whereas camera raw borrows from bridge and photoshop). In lightroom use the "softproof" and chose your output colorspace to see what your images will look like. It could also be that your images coming out of lightroom are being output with a different color profile from what photoshop is saving your images as : adobe rbg VS srgb.  In my tests my images from photoshop and lightroom looked the same as long as they were both saved to the same colorspace ( I use srgb)
Noel - sorry for the vague question. I know that some people use lightroom vs ACR for its price. Some use it for it photo managing aspects compared to bridge. I was wondering if in any of your use or anything that you had seen posted if you had seen people choosing lightroom for performance related reasons. (import of raw images - editing - exporting)

I am also using both CS5 and LR4. For some unknown reason, CS5 Camera Raw appears to do a better job than LR4. Perhaps it is the darker interface that make the photo look ok in LR4. When the same photos are compared against Camera Raw later, the LR4 all have this slight warm colour hue. I also find the steps required to open a file from Camera Raw to CS5 much easier than from LR4

  • FAQ: Can I install the Photoshop CS6 beta if I have the Lightroom 4 beta installed?

Yes, both Photoshop CS6 beta and the Lightroom 4 beta can be installed and used together on the same system. However, the Lightroom 4 beta expires on 3/31/2012. If you want to try the Photoshop CS6 bta and Lightroom 4 together, download the 30-day trial of the official release of Adobe Lightroom 4.

  • How to install Camera Raw 6.7 for Photoshop CS6 Beta?

I tried; it installed for CS5 only (exactly what I didn't want it to do). I don't see where the app/plugins are stored on the computer, so I haven't tried to manually fix it.
I'd like to have my old version of ACR back for CS5, and to be able to use the new one in CS6 beta.
    Thank you!

    Hello!
You cannot install 6.7 in CS6. It is specific for CS5.
If you are interested by the additional camera support, I suggest that you convert a copy of the files with the DNG converter 6.7 until Camera Raw will be updated.
If your camera manufacturer supported DNG as a native raw format, you would not have this issue. (And I can't imagine what the ACR/Lightroom and other teams would come with with the time they would win thanks to that.)
