PS CS6 Beta - Crop tool problems

Generally, i think the new crop tool is pretty good. However, i'm having some problems with predefined sizes / areas.Let me try to explain:
1. For example, I have a scanned image that is 26.14 x 20.32 cm @300ppi
2. I have defined a size called 'Half Page' which is 23.5 x 15.5 cm @300ppi
Now, what i would expect is that:
1. The moment i open the scanned image, click the crop tool and select the 'Half Page' setting, the crop boundaries would show up up at the correct setting in terms of size and resolution.
2. I should then have a window within which i could move the image to get the parts i want into the crop box.
This is not happening:
1. The crop size (box) is showing as 23.5 x 15.5.
2. The info is showing as 26.14 x 17.24
3. The image size is showing the same and @ 300ppi.
Obviously, i'm probably doing something wrong or else...
Grateful for any help!
Cheers!
S

Further Noel... just tried setting the predetermined box in pixels... same problem...
What seems to happen is that the largest dimension reverts to the image boundary, while the smaller dimension crops into the image. This despite my setting the ppi to 300 - the same as the image's ppi.
The way i look at it, when i set a predertimed size, the crop box should be at that size... particularly, as you suggested, when i have pixels selected as my dimensions. And my rulers are also set to pixels.
The latest attempt as follows:
1. Image size is 20.32 x 26.14cm @300ppi (2400x3087 pixels)
2. Crop size is set to 1831 x 2776 pixels (ppi setting enabled to 300 and rulers are also in pixels)
What happens is the crop box defaults to the full height of the image and crops in at the sides. Info box shows: W:1831, H: 2776. But it's encomapssing the full 3087 pixels (height) of the original image.
The way i look at it i should get a crop box that is smaller than the image and now should be able to move the image around to gt th crop i want. This way i still have to crop into the image and it's then resampling the image.
Cheers...

  • CS6 PS Cropping Tool has many problems for working professionals...

Ok, I understand that the kids at Adobe would like to change things around in "upgrade versions" of Photoshop.  However for working photographers and professionals that crop A LOT of images in the course of their work, the new cropping tool is a DISASTER!  A few may like the new tool... however, there are many that don't.  http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop_6_crop_tool?utm_content=re ply_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=reply_notification#reply_10280572
To the point, here's how to fix the problem.  Adobe, you have the CS5 PS cropping tool code... please put that code EXACTLY as it is in CS5 into the "Classic" option for CS6 PS.  This way, those who WORK with Photoshop and PAY to use the software can get their work done using the excellent crop tool as was in CS5 (which I have downgraded to so I can get work done) and those who are giddy about the new crop tool can play to their hearts content.
Adobe, you are upsetting a lot of paying clients with your new crop tool and the "faux" classic tool option.  You might want to address this issue soon!

Ken, I have to say that I too chose to go back to CS5.  I feel like I got nailed with being an "early adopter", you know the guys that get to do the bug testing for a company because they didn't know how to do it or were too cheap.
That is something that  Noel (How you doing Noel? You probably don't remember me from back in the Macromedia user group days, but thought I'd say hi anyhow) either doesn't understand or isn't acknowledging so far.
I am judging by his like 19k+ posts that he's either a rep on behalf of Photoshop or an avid user.   I appreciate what he is trying to do, but on the other hand, just admit the tool is a pain.  It isn't intuitive. It does take WAY too long to figure out to use.
I have NEVER had this much problem with any tool in Photoshop. This tool represents the biggest pain I have EVER experienced with a Photoshop tool and I've used it since '93. I adore Photoshop. I am a power user. Those words aren't the words of a flippant newbie.
I know if I use it for 8 hours a day like you Noel, that I will get used to it, but that isn't the point.
The point is that I feel like I was hit with a poorly thought out tool, with a poorly implemented "Classic" mode that feels buggy, to say the least. It's usability doesn't "flow" because for example what genius thought of hitting the P key to go into Classic mode, when that conflicts with the Pen/Paths tool? Really? My deeper concern is that Photoshop is slipping on it's usability standards like Apple is on it's iPhones.  In the words of usability guru, Steve Krug "Don't make me think."
What I chose to do is this:
1)Grudgingly use CS6 for the things it does really really well. Can I just say I love the new Raw interface, and love "Clarity" for example? Great job guys. I watched a tutorial and got it almost instantly.
2)Continue to use CS5 for cropping lot's of images, something I also do a lot of.  Cross my fingers that whoever dropped the ball on this gets their act together and makes this tool truly usable and intuitive.   At the very least they will make the Classic mode work properly.  For example, why do I keep popping out of Classic mode? Why doesn't the preference stick consistently? There shouldn't be a learning curve this steep on a crop tool. I'm really surprised this didn't come up in usability testing.
I hate being the first adopter, because they get to work out all the kinks for the people who failed to do their job in the first place. That's what feels like happened here.  If users don't complain and give feedback, Adobe will never fix the problem, right?
Now before somebody freaks out and calls this a flame, it isn't. No emotion is to be read into this that isn't expressly stated.  I'm not being sarcastic, sardonic or unfriendly. Whatever tone is being read into this is a projection of your own mind.

  • Samyak Veera - Why Photoshop Crop Tool Problem?

Yesterday, I had problem with the photoshop crop tool. It usually works fine, but suddenly it has been acting up, whenever I try and crop something it turns the image into a tiny little dot I have NO idea why. Was it a setting problem or other thing that I might have messed with? Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks Samyak Veera

One way to fix a tool acting up is to reset it. Right-click or Ctrl-click on its' icon in the Option bar and select Reset Tool.

  • CROP TOOL PROBLEMS

    Hi everybody ,
using the crop tool when typing the crop marquee the select square doesn't show
the side handles only the corner handles.
The effect is random , some times i have all the eight handles
and the other times only the corners , as you can see in the attaches file
HAVE ANYONE SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THAT PROPLEM
    THANKS

You're right to expect side handles.  The outline should also change from dashed to solid if you're running with OpenGL enabled.
Go into the Edit - Preferences - Performance menu...
Is [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing checked?
If so, try unchecking it temporarily and testing.
MAKE SURE to close and restart Photoshop before testing any change to the OpenGL settings.
If you want to continue to use OpenGL, try click the [ Advanced Settings... ] button.
What controls in the GL Settings are checked?
If some are checked, try unchecking various controls.
If you are having OpenGL issues (i.e., if any of the above make a difference), visit the web site of the maker of your video card, and download and install the latest video driver they have released.
What video card did you get?  ATI/AMD video drivers for modern cards are up to Catalyst version 11.1, and I find it works pretty well.

  • Adobe Publicly Claims Leopard is the Reason for PS CS3 Crop Tool Problems

From the Adobe User to User Forum for Mac PS:
"Adobe and Apple are working closely to provide a fix to a known issue running Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended on Mac OS X Leopard (v10.5.1). Currently, when you enter values in numerical fields to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, those values revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
While we have identified workarounds for some of the affected tools, this issue prevents people from working as precisely and intuitively as they expect. Providing a fix to customers is a top priority. Please note the following:
The fix will be provided through an update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) update.
Apple is collaborating closely with us to get this fix incorporated into a Mac OS X Leopard update. *No public schedule* is available at this time, but both companies understand the urgency of this fix."
This is a huge major problem and would hope that Apple, if indeed it is their problem, will assign all the resources necessary to get a fix far before 08 arrives.

Adobe should have had updates waiting on the day 10.5 was released. Not possible? BS! Even a dippy little driver like SteerMouse had a 10.5 version posted to download the day after 10.5 was released.
You are conveniently omitted the various developers, much smaller than Adobe, who did not ship updates the day Leopard was available, claiming that they really needed to test with the final shipping version. I might try to dig up a few of those notices.
Believe it or not, Adobe actually beat several small developers to Universal Binary, even though it took a while for Adobe's huge code bases.
And if it's a Leopard bug, then I want Apple to fix it, rather than forcing the developer to work around it if there's a fix coming anyway. That would be a waste of time.
Also I severely doubt that Adobe had the, as you say, "source code" for Leopard. Does Apple let any other developer have the "source code?" I think the only source code allowed outside the Apple campus are the parts that were already open source to begin with.

  • Tips! How to bypass new crop tool CS6, photoshop

Do you dislike the new crop function in Photoshop CS6?
I found out a way to handle and bypass the function so it works like in earlier versions.
    1. First step is to change to classic mode (this is done in settings above the image a little "gear")
    2. The second step is to change ratio to unconstrained.
The third step is the tip!
I was very frustrated that I could not start outside the picture to begin my cropping.
You know when you want to crop a landscape image of a portrait image and want to go from side to side.
The problem was that I started to rotate a crop frame that was there by default... REALLY CRAPPY FEATURE!
    3. So here is the tip
Place your cursor is outside the picture
Before you begin dragging, hold down shift.
Begin the dragging, then let go of shift, and "tada" the crop frame behaves as it should.
I hope you found this info useful
    Best Regards // Daniel

I don't see why your method is better than just using the new perspective crop tool (it allows you to start outside the image, use a specific size, and rotate the crop (by dragging from near/outside of a corner).
In a lot of cases want to go from left to right edge of the image.
    From Original ratio:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Move down the upper edge, move up the lower edge.
    From unconstraind:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Almost drag the area I want, move the edges out to left and right.
With my method I can easily drag the area I want in one movement.
at least a couple of problems with that: You still can't distort the crop lines (grab a corner and move it independent of the other corners) to fix perspective and such; and you aren't cropping to a particular size (which means you have to do it as a separate step after cropping).
I am sorry I could not find a way to do that easy...
And I agree to the common opinion, why limit something that works well, without having the option via settings to get it back.

  • What is wrong with the crop tool in Photoshop CS6? (picture included)

Ever since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and started to use the new crop tool, I get this quite interesting visual error and some artifacting.
I didn't have the problem with the crop tool in the previous versions of Photoshop.
    What can be the issue?

Seems like a GPU problem. Can you try going into Photoshop Preferences, disable GPU acceleration and try if that fixes it?

  • Page Cropping Tool Box Size Problem

I just recently tried to crop a page in Acrobat 9 Pro & noticed that the drop down crop tool box does not fit my computer screen; it is too big.  How can I change the size of the box such that I can check the OK box when I am finished cropping the page in order to save it?
My laptop is a HP Pavilion dm4-2180us Notebook PC running Windows 7 (64-bit) operating system.
Please see attached screen shot which should better explain my problem.

Is it possible to compress your display. With a tablet, it is simply a matter of drawing your fingers together when placed on the screen. This does not change the pixel resolution, but does change the size of items on the screen.

  • Crop tool in Camera Raw 8.4 for PS CS6

I recently downloaded camera raw 8.4 for use with photoshop CS6. The crop tool in camera raw now only allows me to crop to a ratio rather than to a specific size. I usually crop to 9x13 or 17x22 inches. How do I get this feature back?  I prefer and need to crop my work to a specific size.
    Thanks, Jeff D.

    Good day!
I notice no difference to prior to 8.4.
But maybe the ACR Forum may be a better place for questions realted to ACR.

  • Photoshop CS6 cropping tools is not good

    Hi!
Everyone who is using Adobe Photoshop CS6 product, the cropping tool is not good as when I try to crop the image moves but not the cropping tool which makes confusing and time consuming.
When I have to print an emergency photo I have to do it within 5 minutes but that cropping tool always makes me confused. Thats why I didn't like photoshop CS6. Currently I am using CS5 product. The next crop tool works better but when I try to move it, image will go misleading.
My question is how you are managing it???
    Thnx

If you ask nicely, the development engineers might provide a single button that toggles back to 'Luddite' mode.   I am not being smug, because I had a wee hissy fit when I first encountered the new Crop tool in the CS6 beta, but I versy soon changed my mind and love it to bits now.  Give them a proper try out and see if you can get used to the new tools.

  • Crop Tool Button Problem - Sometimes it works, other times you get Crop Pages Menu

I can't be the only person who's had this problem. Sometimes in Acrobat when I press the Crop Tool button, I get to use the rectangle selection box window and it works fine. Other times when I press the Crop Tool button, I get the Crop Pages menu which is very fustrating .
I found a solution which is to open a PDF where the Crop Tool works fine. Use the Crop tool command and save it. Exit Acrobat. After doing this, any PDF should work fine with the Crop Tool, but there's gotta be a better way.
Any experts know a setting I missed or a mistake I'm repeating?
Note: It seams when Crop Tool works correctly, the button stays pressed down (darkened), but when it doesn't work, the button stays up (not highlighted).

  • Problem with filters not finding an image in LR 4.0 after being edited in Photoshop CS6 beta

I am running Lightroom 4.0 on a Win7 Professional 64-bit system. I have come up with a strange problem I can describe but don't know how it can more generally be duplicated, unless this is a Photoshop CS6 beta bug.
I am looking through in Library module at a shoot. When I filter by a keyword that some of the pictures have, a recently edited image does not show up. Here is what I mean; let X=IMG_6260:
    1) For X.CR2, edit in Photoshop CS5. All works well - X-ed.tif gets created and added to my LR previous import set.
    2) Clicking on X-ed.tif, edit in Photoshop CS6 beta. All seems fine - X-ed-2.tif gets created and added to my LR previous import set.
    3) The keywords on all three images - the original and the two edits - are the same. I can confirm that by, in grid view, selecting these three and noting no asterisks in the composite keyword view. One of the keywords is the person's name - let's say it is "Sara".
    4) Now, when I click in the keyword list on "Sara", all images in this most recently imported set show up with her *except* X-ed-2.tif - the one created by CS6 beta.
Strange! Should this be reported in a CS6 forum? Thanks.

Yep, it returns nothing. Debug output seems to be largely irrelevant except this oddity:

There are several advantages to the newly redesigned Crop tool in Photoshop CS6. In this video tutorial, Julieanne demonstrates the refined interface, new features, customizable presets, enhanced tools and essential shortcuts that will make cropping easier than ever.

In CS6 if you simply switch to the crop tool after making the selection the crop area is automatically set to the selected area and if you don't want to change anything click on the ok check mark and you are done.  Is that what you want to do?
