  • How can I bring my photo library from my desktop or external HDrive into aperture itself

    Good morning,
How can I bring my photolibrary from the desctop or external harddrive into Aperture itself?

    Marcus,
is the Aperture version on your new Mac Aperture 3.5.1?
the contents of aperture on to a external drive
Is that your old Aperture library? Does it look like this?
If it is an Aperture library, that you copied to your Desktop, click it to open it in Aperture. Aperture should update/upgrade it to your current Aperture version. What happens, when you try?
If it is not an Aperture library, but a folder of referenced images files, search for your old Aperture library and transfer that to your new mac.
Do you already have an Aperture library on your new mac and want to import/ merge your old library into it? Then You first need to let Aperture upgrade the old library to your current Aperture  version, before you can import and merge the library with "File > Import > LIbrary".
Could you perhaps post a screen capture of what you are now having on your Desktop? And any exact error messages that you might get, when you are trying to open your Aperture library?

  • I bought an album on itunes of my ipod touch 4. I don't know why but the album is deleted of my ipod and it isn't on itunes of my computer. With my computer, how can I re-download my album without having to buying it again???

read my question. also, I don't know why but I cant click on "achat" or purchase on itunes store...

It can take a day or even two sometimes before the transaction is processed. Paypal is then the first to inform you by email and later it is Apple. I have a credit card in my Paypal account which means that I don't have to put money into Paypal.
And if the purchase is not billed at all, no problem at all I guess.

  • On the Mac Pro Desktop can you use a Samsung smart tv as the main and only monitor? Is there any reason one would not do that with a wireless keyboard?

I have not purchased the Mac Pro yet when I do my thought is to use our Samsung 55" Smart tv as the main monitor along with a bluetooth apple keyboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated

A TV set is not a Monitor.
A TV set is intended for displaying moving pictures, and not stable, static pictures, with bright, saturated colors in adjacent areas on the screen without "bleeding", fine lines one pixel wide without vibration, or smooth-edged diagonals in fine text edges.
The 55" width is beyond your ability to see the screen edges when sitting close. If you sit appropriately far away, the text will be too small to read.
The Mac requires that any display respond to a query including display_name and capabilities. Many TV sets have a problem "paying attention" to the computer port and responding when queried, so the screen may often remain dark at startup and after sleep, requiring your intervention to show a picture.

  • Some Thoughts on the Mac Pro Design

The design of the Mac Pro raises some interesting questions, and I'd like to know if anyone on this forum has insight on these issues.
First, the use of riser cards for main memory is unusual in a consumer or small-business oriented PC design. Designers normally try to avoid this architecture because it adds cost and potentially slows the system. The higher cost comes from the additional connectors, mechanical support hardware, and interface circuitry necessary to drive the memory chip data across the logic board connector. (That's why the Mac Pro memory modules are fully buffered.) Placing the memory slots on the logic board (as in the G5 design) is significantly less expensive. Riser cards also have reduced memory bandwidth due to the additional capacitance and inductance associated with the longer signal traces between the memory and the CPU. The riser card approach is usually used only when there are packaging constraints (i.e., space constraints) that preclude placing the memory chips on the logic board, or when there is some plan to allow future expansion of the system by adding new hardware using the riser board connectors (e.g., additional processors or other devices).
The only explanation that I can find is that Apple was forced to this architecture by packaging constraints imposed by the carry-over tower architecture.
Second, the use of ECC memory in a consumer or low-end business machine is also unusual. ECC memory is typically used for high-reliability computers that process data for non-consumer applications where the consequences of corrupted data are substantial (as in computing at financial institutions, control systems for medical devices, etc.). ECC memory offers a level of data integrity, but is generally higher cost (more chips) and slower (it takes time to compute and compare the ECC codes) than non-ECC systems. Since Apple is using ECC, it would seem that they are either planning to sell Mac Pros in to high reliability applications, or they know something about memory bit failure rates that we don’t. The actual memory die used in the Mac Pro memory modules are standard DDR2 5300 parts, and are the same as those used in the Macbook Pro.
The overall design of the Mac Pro positions it well for use as a work station, and perhaps that was Apple's intent.
The price of the Mac Pro is remarkably low when compared to machines from Dell or Gateway. The good news seems to be that there is quite a bit of room for future price reductions in the form of a Mac Pro with a new case design and simpler memory architecture.

For post-production and audio work, having a quieter computer is one of the reasons I ordered a Mac Pro - quieter is good. And as my MDD dual 867Mhz is now as long in the tooth as I am, it couldn't come at a better time. I was really contemplating buying a quad G5 the past 6 months, but then heard the professional desktop would come out during the developer's conference, and I'm glad I waited. The price is absolutely - and insanely - great. Mine should be here on the 15th, and I'll be counting the hours. As for the risers, I'm willing to endure a few nanoseconds as a trade-off.

  • Mac Pro can access other Macs but those same Macs cannot access the Mac Pro

    Hello.
I have a highly annoying problem that goes as follows:
    My (home) network consists of:
    - 1 Mac Pro (e2008 - 10.5.6)
    - 1 iMac (2008 - 10.5.6)
    - 1 MacMini (2004 - 10.4.??)
    - 1 MacBook Air (2008 - 10.5.6)
The internet connection is alive and well with no drops not that it truely matters here.
    The setup is as follows:
    - Linksys AM300 in half bridge mode connects to the
    - Apple Airport Extreme Base station from which 1 cat6 cable runs to the
    - Mac Pro
The other Macs connected to the Airport Extreme wirelessly.
The Mac Pro has its network settings setup correctly (in fact it used to work fine but then just stopped working) and I have also disabled all network settings, rebooted and reapplied the settings to no effect.
    To clarify:
I (Mac Pro) can connect to all Macs in the network but all those macs can see me but not connect to me. Connecting via the Finder simply says "Connection Failed" and if I open the "Connect to server.." and enter the IP address of the Mac Pro it results in an error/failed connection also.
Any ideas to fix this would be highly appreciated.
PS: As of now, 19/03/2009, I have all software updates installed on all macs in the network.

Place the files you want to transfer on the Desktop
Click on the Finder or desktop to swtich to Finder, then Go > Computer, then double click on the boot drive, then on the Users folder.
Open the target User folder and inside is a Public folder > Drop Box, just drag and drop in there and the permissions change so that user can use the file.

  • Can I connect screen wireless to the Mac Pro?

    Hello,
My name is Ben and I am a frequent Mac user.
I'm looking in to buying a new Mac Pro and I was wondering if it was possible to connect screens wireless? That way I would use the Mac Pro as an external server and instal my screens in different rooms throughout the house.
    Thank you.
    Dear regards,
    Ben

I would like to setup the Mac Pro in one room with a screen attached to it with a cable. In an other room I would like to have just a screen that uses the Mac pro as computer and storage space.
I am talking about Apple 27' inch screens .

  • Is the Mac Pro a Worthy Investment

    Hi guys and gals,
I have a few questions, hopefully the follow somewhat of a logical order.
I am a student look to invest in a new mac for the fall (or new year), but like any good student - I am not made of money.
As an amateur photographer look to become pro (I use PS CS3), Is it possible to get a Mac Pro cheap? Does anyone sell a downgraded Mac Pro this way it's around 1500 or less?
The reason I ask is the Mac Pro leaves space for hardware upgrades (if I'm not mistaken) which means I could use the current hardware for longer and save money to upgrade in X number of years.
Am I just dreaming here? Should I look into older models or other macs such as macbook pros?
Or is there another reliable forum site I could ask this on?
Thanks for the time. I really appreciate it.

As far as performance goes, for still photography a Mac mini would probably be fine, particularly the current models (the previous models would in my opinion have been underpowered for serious photo work). A Mac Pro might indeed be overkill for photography, though the Mac Pro is certainly is nice to work with. Working with photographs doesn't stress a computer all that much; certainly not as compared with video editing and processing. The largest amount of computer power in working with photographs comes when you apply multiple filters and transforms, which you may or many not be doing. A Mac mini would probably be well worth at least considering. The biggest limitation would probably be the amount of RAM in the mini (which applies to any system; the mini is just harder to upgrade). If you're working with very large images, more RAM will be a big performance booster, so I'd recommend that you bump the system to 4GB.
Whichever you decide, I would suggest that you upgrade to Photoshop CS4, which has much better performance on Intel-based Macs, if you want to keep using PShop, though both Apple's Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom would be worth considering, either as replacement (depending on what you use PShop to do) or as an adjunct. As a student you can pick up Adobe and Apple software at a significant discount.
Whatever you decide, don't cheap out on choosing your monitor. While you may not need one of the high-end LCDs sold for precise color matching (though if you intend to be a professional photographer generating your own prints, it might be necessary down the road), do careful research before you purchase your monitor. Many monitors are just fine for gaming but rubbish for a serious photographer. That doesn't mean you have to spend top dollar, just make sure that the reviews and information apply to color rendition for photographic work, not performance with moving images.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Pro will not boot - HD and Machine are fine.

Greetings, and thank you in advance for your wisdom.
I have a 12-core Mac Pro, and she has been running like a dream. Once a month I run Onyx. Yesterday I did the same and upon reboot I got the grey apple screen and the spinning progress wheel that never stops spinning.
    1. I repaired the HD via Disk Utility. All is fine.
    2. The contents of the start-up drive are accessible - so the drive itself is not physically damaged.
    3. I installed a new HD and made a copy of this Start-up disk via the Disk Utility. It will not boot from this drive as well.
    4. I installed Snow Leopard (still using this) on the new drive to make sure the computer was happy. It fires up fine.
    5. Everything is disconnected from the Mac Pro
So, I have obvious, and idiotically damaged the start-up disk using Onyx (assumption).
My life would be much better knowing I could do something that would enable me to boot from my current start-up and that's where I seek your wisdom.
Another question would be: If the above is not possible, if I install a fresh OS on the new drive, and then begin to replace all of the folders from the old drive (applications, library, etc.) will I be able to access my files as I did before. My issue is that I use this for music production, and there are literally close to 100 plugins that all have been registered. Going back through that process again would be days of labor, as some of these were purchases years ago. Tracking down serials would be a task. I think you understand.
So any advice that might prevent me from having to do as I said above will be wonderful.
    Thank you all so much.
    Lance

Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
    from:
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
If your Hardware is functioning correctly, and your disk has no un-repaired Directory problems [Hint: run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) first] then re-installing Mac OS X modifies ONLY the files that are part of Mac OS X. Your Added Applications, User files (which contain preferences and serial numbers) are not supposed to be touched.

  • Mac pro cinema display cuts out and can't access Mac with screen sharing

    Hi
A weird thing has started happening to my Mac Pro today. After using it for a few minutes the cinema display it is attached to on the Mac Pro just goes black. The Mac Pro is clearly still on - the light is on and i can hear the fans. The Mac Pro shows up on my local network and i can connect to it and access files from my Macbook, but screen sharing doesn't work (i just get the message 'contacting mac pro' and nothing else) and i can't connect to shared iTunes library either, which makes me think it is not just a display issue. I cannot wake the computer with the mouse or keyboard, which makes me think it isn't just a sleep issue. All i can do is physically turn the Mac Pro off, start it up and it will start up successfully and then work for a few more minutes before i get the same problem. I have reset the PRAM and SMC and still have the same problems. Can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
I should mention that i have another problem with the Mac Pro in that it has been spontaneously waking up from sleep and starting up from shutdown, and i still haven't resolved this. I don't know if it is connected to the above issue.
    thanks
    nick

I have experienced almost the exact same thing with my new 2008 Mac Pro and my 30" Apple display. It has happened to me twice in the last few weeks. The first time I chalked it up to a fluke, but now that it's happened again I searched the forums. In both cases I've had music playing in iTunes which continues playing, goes on to the next track, and so on. So the machine has not crashed in full. I too can connect to the files via another computer on the network, but cannot share the screen.
I have not had the sleep issues you have had.
I'll look at the link you provided in your next post to see where that gets me, but I wanted to let you know you were not alone on this one.

  • HT1338 I own the Mac Pro Desktop with the older OS X 10.5.8. Can I upgrade to a newer version?

I own the Mac Pro Desktop with the older OS X 10.5.8. Can I upgrade to a newer version? Will it affect my docs etc currently stored on hard drive's? How much will this cost?

If you have a 2006 or 2007 model you can upgrade it to Lion - 10.7.x. If it's a 2008 or later model you can upgrade to the current version of Mountain Lion. Doing so requires Snow Leopard 10.6.8:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
Back up your current system to an external drive or to an available internal drive by making a bootable clone:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • As soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down

    Linc,
You keep showing up when I search for this problem so I hope you can help.
I'm having the same issue in Premiere and Media Encoder (but not After Effects). My Mac just restarts itself as soon as video is loaded. I can start Premiere and open a project and go through relinking media, but as soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down.
I've fixed the problem temporarily two times. The first time I was troubleshooting what was wrong and wound up putting in my old video card and after that fixed the problem, I switched back to my GTX 680. I also did a driver update. After doing that I was ok for a few days so I figured it was a driver thing or maybe the card just needed to be reseated. Then when it started acting up again I figured something was going on.
So I started searching again and came across one of your posts that recommended removing CUDA. I did that and it worked perfectly for a week until about 20 minutes ago. Crashed in the middle of an edit and now each time I restart Premiere it crashes as soon as video touches my monitors.
I found this post because I specifically searched for "com.nvidia.web.NVDAResmanWeb(8.2.7)" from my Problem Report.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Darren

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.
