PS CS6 to CS5 shape problem

Hi.
I'll get this short.
I made a PSD template in PS CS6. This template is fully shaped. When a friend of mine who has PS CS5 opened the document. He got "this document contains unknown data (...)" allert box. Flatten the image is not an option.
Now, I know that shape tool got an signifiant update in CS6, and CS5 don't have it. But I'm asking how cand I make thoose shapes to work in older CS versions too.
I have to mention that not all shapes have this problem, just half of them, so this is even stranger.
If this is somehow important to you, both of us have Windows versions of PS, and both have Extended versions, just CS are different(me CS6, him CS5).

Your shapes ARE fill layers with vector masks under the covers. Depending on what else you've selected - e.g., stroke - there's extra data there, which is the root of this problem. And no, the (non Layer Style) Stroke option is new for Photoshop CS6.
Open this file (created in Photoshop CS6) in both Photoshop CS6 and CS5 and see how things look in each version:

The issue is related to selecting vector shapes. Below I'm describing the difference between Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS6 and showing the actual issue.

The Problems
This is frustrating because it is hard to set layer styles properly, the additional "stroke" that comes from the selected layer mask visuals mess the things up.
Also the shortcut of coppying the vector mask is also different.
I fould a way that solves the problem partially - http://screencast.com/t/CSKcTX3n, but after you select the actual vector path and points, it turns on automatically, which is frustrating again.
Hey guys, you've done wonderful job with CS6 really. Congrats you are trying to incorporate real vector shapes in photoshop, but selection of the shapes in illustrator and photoshop just can't be the same.
Please can you find a way to select vector shapes without selecting the actual vector mask too, this was perfectly developed in Photoshop CS5.

As for the current selection behavior, thanks for the feedback. I can definitely see how that would be annoying, especially if you are used to the previous shape layer workflow. I can't promise any changes for this release, but I will pass it along to the rest of the team and we'll keep it in mind for future releases.
Also, just to clarify some of the terminology, the path associated with the shape layer is called a shape path. It is no longer a separate mask, although it has much of the same behavior as the old content fill + vector mask shape layers.

I totally understand what you're saying, but in CS6 the path is part of the layer. It's not really comparable to any other layer types.
Anyway, I'm not trying to dismiss your feedback or anything -- just trying to help explain what our thinking was behind the changes. Hopefully we'll be able to keep refining the behavior of the new features in the future.

Different behaviour of a plug in in CS6 and CS5.5

I've noticed a difference in a plugin behaviour in CS6 and CS5.5.
In a SequenceSetup function the following call generates a PF_Cmd_ARBITRARY_CALLBACK in CS6 with the PF_Arbitrary_FLAT_SIZE_FUNC state of extra parameter. The same PF_Cmd_ARBITRARY_CALLBACK appears later in a plugin work and doesn't work properly in CS6. Though in CS5.5 there is no problem with this function, it doesn't generate any weird events.

I work in Windows 7, x64. CS6 is 11.0.0.378 version, CS5.5 is 10.5.0.253 version. The only change between these two version of the plug in is the PF_GetCurrentState signature. So I suppose that the problem is inside a new SDK. But I have no guess where it may be.. Do you have any idea what might have changed in CS6 to provide such an error?

Thanks very much for closing the loop and reporting back what worked for you. As to why there is a difference between CS5.5 and CS6, one of the engineers here explains:
"I assume the behavior change is due to me making code in certain libraries thread-safe, and explicitly disallowing the execution of certain callbacks on anything other than the main thread. If it worked before CS6, it worked by accident, and was very unsafe to do."

I'd go to the Adobe AE SDK forum and ask there.
If those are error messages from applying an effect or running a script, what are you doing to generate the error?

Running both CS6 and CS5 bridge

I'm running CS5 bridge but using CS6 tools from the cloud tools. I keep CS5 on board because CS6 Bridge is really useless for getting any work done. I face major pauses when I try to use any of the menu buttons or try to right click on anything. Usually at least 5 seconds.
So I just use CS5 which is very quick to respond to those kind of clicks.
I'm seeing one problem that is apparently related to having both versions:
In CS6 Bridge:
When I set Edit/Camera Raw preferences/ Camera Raw Cache/ Select location
It also sets the same place for CS5 Bridge. And Vise versa if I set it from CS5 it changes CS6 as well.
Somewhere they must be using the same configuration file. Just at a guess I'd say that is not supposed to happen.
Can someone who knows more about the internal workings give me some advice about keeping the different versions from sharing settings?

Yup, its way to aggravating and time wasting to try to use CS6. In my case, running CS5, the one draw back is that I don't have access to the PS CS6 batch processor, so if I have need of that, I have to put up with CS6 long enough to get that done. Forutnately I don't use it all that often.. at least the recent projects I've undertaken have not necessitated it more than a few times.
Are you able to access the PS CS6 image processor from Bridge CS5? (Tools/photoshop/ And here you see several batching sort of tools including the Image Processor). For me; when running CS5 the Tools menu does not have a "photoshop" entry at all.
I'm sort of jumping to a new topic here and hope you don't mind. I wondered if you might have developed a numbered list of things one should try when having the stalling problem some users are seeing with CS6 bridge. I would like to take one more systematic stab at getting a usable installation of CS6 bridge before resorting to the long and usually painful process of getting help from adobe.
It would really be handy if someone with your grasp of this tool could codify and distill down a step by step list of things to try to get CS6 bridge working better.
Your respones to me and to at least one other poster I've noticed (I'm sure there have been more) contain lots of different things to try but with my shortage of experience with this kind of troubleshooting I'm not sure what order to attempt things in.

Help ma boab did you migrate over your applications and settings from your old computer? It does appear the installer was unable to create the Adobe Photoshop CS5 folder since your current User account did not have sufficient access to either modify they Applications or Adobe Photoshop CS5 folder if it already exists.
If you migrated/copied any files or applications from your old computer then I would recommend running the uninstaller from the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder. Once you have uninstalled please run the CC Cleaner Tool prior to reinstalling Photoshop CS5. A few PS CS6 (13.0, 64bit) problems I've noticed so far

I'm running CS6 64-bit (13.0) on a Windows 7 x64 machine.
A have a 300MB many-layer file that I've been working on with a client in PS CS5 and it's been working fine. However, when I open it in CS6 (same performance options/scratch disks/etc):
It takes 3 times as long to open
Some of the layers are actually gone
CS6 is much more sluggish than CS5
I guess I should have waited for version 13.1.

I discovered that CS6 runs a lot faster (for this "tall and thin" file) if I change the Preferences/Performance/Cache Tile Size to 128K instead of the default 1024K. It would be nice if Photoshop could configure the cache properties on the fly based on the latest file that the user works on. As it is, I'll need to change this value and restart PS when working on a "tall and thin" file versus large digital photos. Of course, I'm not familiar with the challenges of implementing this feature, but I'd assume many PS users switch between these types of files regularly.
The missing layers are there, but not being displayed. They are solid-color filled layers (with paths). Here is an image of the layers panel from CS5 (left) and CS6 (right).
The layers titled "Shape 7 copy" and "Shape 7" do show in CS5, but don't show in CS6. However, "Shape 16" and "teal bar" do appear in both CS5 and CS6 (they're the same type of solid color-fill layer). On the paths panel, the non-showing layers have blank "shape paths" (but those that show have the expected paths). So it looks like CS6 didn't properly import the paths for these particular color-fill layers.
Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it (besides recreating the layers)?

CS6 breaks CS5.5 (Mac)

Hello,
I recently downloaded InDesign CS6 through my Adobe Membership (I have a CS5.5 Suite subscription).
InDesign CS6 downloaded, installed and launched fine BUT now the CS5.5 programs (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop) won't run at all. They launch, all of the toolbars etc come up and then the program closes immediatly. No error message.
Can anything be done about this? I still want to use the 5.5 programs during the transition phase while my collegues upgrade to CS6 and not have to downsave all the time.
Has anyone come across this as well? I am running Snow Leopard.

Yes I can confirm that all of the CS6 apps are activated.
I currently have InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 installed. The problem extends to all of the CS5.5 apps I have installed (also InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop).
As an update on what I said yesterday:
- I restarted my computer then tried to launch InDesign CS5.5, same problem happened (the app launches, shows toolbars and then closes, no error message).
BUT
- When I launched InDesign CS5.5 while InDesign CS6 was running, the CS5.5 version opened and worked perfectly.
I then tested to see if InDesign CS5.5 would run if InDesign CS6 was closed. I then closed both apps and launched the CS5.5 version and hey presto it worked fine.
So, it seems that the CS5.5 versions only work if the CS6 versions were launched first. What a weird glitch. It must have something to do with shared files that the two apps use I assume?
Something for the engineers to think about?
In any event, my colleagues are nearly all migrated to CS6 (already!) so this will not be much of a problem shortly. Furthermore, the fact that I can downsave to CS4 from CS6 natively means that sharing files across different versions will not really be an issue.
I am currently holding InDesign CS3 to CS6 because of the issue with legacy versions and people like printers who refuse to update their software (I worked with one who was still on CS2 the other day! What a nightmare that was).
As an aside, with the launch of Creative Cloud there is no excuse not to have the latest version anymore. I must applaud Adobe for launching such a fantastic and resonably priced service. No longer do I have to shell out thousands of dollars upfront for this essential software but can instead pay a monthly subscription fee which is very kind to my pocket. I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that this will put a stop to a lot of piracy as well and hopefully spur a lot of people to finally get the latest versions so that we can all work on one and not have to downsave the whole time.

Photoshop CS6 has encountered a problem and needs to close

I just download cs6 photoshop, I can successfully download the program but when I try and open it up I get an error that tells me "Adobe Photoshop CS6 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I uninstalled photoshop and re installed it hopping this would work but it didn't. This is the error signature that is pulling up. also ran adobe support advisor and it found no problems. My system is xp version 2002 with service pack 3

How to open a idml file created by CS6 in CS5?

I created a file in InDesign CS6 and saved as idml file yesterday.
But today I can not open either in CS6 or CS5 version.
It says
"Cannot open the file "Project #3.idml". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
Is there anyother way could open this file?

I chose from the drop-down list.

If you didn't have the opportunity to deactivate the installations then you should contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations for all the serial numbers involved.

Make sure you are logged in to the Adobe site, have cookies enabled, clear your cookie cache. If it continues to fail try using a different browser.

Is it possible to use a file from CS6 in CS5.5

I'm hoping to buy CS6 but I use CS5.5 at college. Is it possible to bring a file from CS6 into CS5.5. If not, where can I get CS5.5?

PS files are backward compatible if you save them with maximum compatibility enabled. likewise, AI files can be saved back to older versions. Of course in both cases specific features from CS6 will be lost or rasterized to pixels, so they are not editable in CS5.5. In Design might be a bit more tricky. It supports saving back to CS5.5, but this may completely ruin your documents, if you use the new dynamic layout features, Arabic text etc., so it's less useful to go that route.

Upgrade CS6 Illustrator and Photoshop Problem

When I tried to upgrade my CS 6 Illustrator and Photoshop through my Adobe Updater, I kept getting the following errors:
Adobe Illustrator CS6 Update (version 16.0.3)
Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
Adobe Photoshop 13.0.2

Please advice on how to overcome the error.
