PS Elements 5. Trouble restoring backup catalog - Organiser freezes

Old computer died and i re-installed PS Elements 5.0 on a Win8.1 machine. The first time instal indicated i was working on "My catalog". I ran a restore catalog function to restore my backup, original "John" catalog. The restore appeared to work ok i.e. the backup file *.tly was processed but my photos didn't show in Organiser. Have since uninstalled Elements 5.0 and reinstalled. On the new instal Organiser is looking for catalog "john" and just freezes. An explorer search cannot find "john" on the computer. How can I either reset my computer for a new clean instal so I end up with "my catalog" and can try a restore again OR how can i restore my "john" catalog without using Organiser.  I have circa 6000 images which were/are catalogued.  Any help appreciated as I don't want to have to tag/collection all of them again.

Hi,
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The pictures I have stored independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
about 7300.  Why would that be
Some of the extra files should most probably be the breeze.xml files. These are created due to preprocessing of face data. I didn't quite get "duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup" ?? . Do you mean they have numbers like -1 , -2 etc attached. If yes, then they exist mostly when you had ediited files present in Organizer. Since these are part of version sets in Organizer so theie count is not shown in Organizer but you see it in your backup.
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
To restore the catlog, you will need to go to File>Restore catalog from ... , browse for the .tly file and hit restore.
Incremental backup comes into picture when you had taken the backup of catalog before. So next time, you make changes to catalog and wish to take a backup , you have the option for an incremental backup which backs up only the changes done in Organizer since the original backup was taken. Incremental backup builds on the original backup and hence its not allowed to overwrite the original.
Hope this helps. Thanks

  • Elements 12, trouble restoring the catalogue from an external drive on my new Mac to another external drive - catalog too big for Mac HD.

I have completed a backup onto an external drive using Elements 12 on my PC running Windows XP. I am now trying to restore this backup onto my new Mac using another external drive as the destination as the catalog is too big to fit onto the Mac internal HD. All seems OK until I click the restore button then I get an error message "The Disc Drive in Mac HD does not contain a valid backup" The file names on the backup drive are visible on the Mac so I presume this backup must be valid so why is there a reference to the Mac HD?

  • Trouble Restoring Backup

    Hello all!
    Here's the background:
My mom's late 2007 macbook with Tiger had its home folder backed up to DVDs with Backup. Her hard drive decided to die, so I replaced it. However, my mom lost her OSX 10.4 system disc. This was no big problem, and we just ordered a 10.5 system disc and loaded that on the computer.
Now, here is my dilemma. I installed the Backup program on her newly restored computer, inserted the first backup disc, but when I go into the Backup utility and select the backup disc, the "restore selection" button does not activate. I can not figure out how to recover this data. Please provide your suggestions.
    Thank you!

Backup doesn't seem to handle restoring from a multi-disc backup without the original plan.
I think it keeps the multi-disk info in the plan data in the home folder's +Library/Application Support+ or Library/Backup folder. With that gone, it's just confused.
(Backup was originally designed to get relatively-small (100 mb or so) amounts of data off-site, to your iDisk (and I still use it for that, in addition to TIme Machine), but it just doesn't handle multi-gb backups all that well.)
So, if you can, try the "restore from this disc." You may get that for each disc in the set.
If that doesn't work, there's an even more difficult and tedious workaround, so post back with your results.
One other question: are these all one "Full" backup, or are there any "incrementals"?

I cannot backup my catalog in Premier Elements 11.  It stops at 68%  when calculating media size.  What can I do to get past this block?

I am not one for backing up the Elements Organizer. But, when I saw your thread and questions, I thought that I would give it a try in view of your most recent comments. My Premiere Elements 11 and its Elements Organizer 11 are on Windows 7 64 bit.
I imported 65 photos into the Elements Organizer and did the Elements Organizer File Menu/Backup Catalog and the Full Backup. I did the Backup to a USB -  8 GB Flash Drive. Everything went surprisingly well
    a. first the Copy Backup Files progress bar
    b. then the message that "The backup completed successfully
When you are getting your feature message, does it specifically say that it is calculating the number of media files or does it just say copying backup files?
After I wrote the above, I came across the following articles that may be of interest in solving the issue.

  • Restoring a catalog from backup and incremental backups on external Hard drive

    Hello!
I recently bought a new computer where I installed again Elements 8 (that's the one I'm currently using). From my old computer, I have an initial complete catalog backup which was saved in a folder (I called this folder "Complete catalog backup") on an external hard drive. I also made then subsequent incremental backups which were saved in different folders called "Incremental backup 1", "incremental backup 2" etc. on the same external hard drive. Apparently in Element, I discovered that incremental backups can't be saved in the same folder as initial complete backup!
How should I proceed now to restore my catalog on my new computer? I know how to do it when one has only a complete initial catalog backup, but now I have also several incremental backups (contained in folders "incremental backup 1", "incremental backup 2" etc.), I just don't know how to proceed.
Some help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot

First and foremost: Forget re-importing. You would loose all your edits. Importing is strictly only for images that have never been imported before.
The remedy for "missing" photos is to re-link them.
In Lr / Grid View right-click the top-most folder in the folders panel. By "top-most" I mean the parent folders of all folders. If you have several parent folder right-click one of them.
Then select <Find Missing Folder>, navigate to the corresponding folder on your new drive E and select it. Do this for every other parent folder. If the folder names and structure haven't changed Lr will find the sub-folders on its own.

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 Restore catalog issue

Okay...I am a novice here...but I have been using Elements since 3.0.  I had my computer setup to backup my catalog in incremental steps to an external hard drive.  I just reformatted my computer (Vista...UGH!)  and now when I restore the catalog per adobe instructions...I don't get all my tags back.  Now here is where I screwed up (I think):  I Had a couple catalogs saved and I can't remember which one I used for the backup.  I think I uploaded the wrong one, now it won't let me overwrite that one!  Also when I finish a restore catalog session, it leaves up the screen that shows the catalog location and when I "x" out of it or cancel out it gives me a "cancel restore session" message.  I am frustrated...Does Adobe provide techs at a cost to come out?  Or can anyone help here?  8 years of tagging photos...I can't give up now!  Thanks

Okay, well I get the catalog to "restore"...but when it is apparently done, it leaves up the window that is "locate next backup items to restore".  If I just "X" out of it or hit "cancel" then elements asks me "are you sure you want to cancel the restore?".  I have no other options but to "x" out of it or cancel.  so I think I'm not getting my complete restore...what do you think?

    Andaleeb,
    Thanks,
I think your answer about the order of incremental backups for restoration should be included in the link you provided.
The only hint about that is :
      " Note:
If you selected Restore From CD/DVD, Elements Organizer prompts you if more than one disc is required to restore a catalog. Follow the onscreen instructions, which differ depending on whether you’re restoring a single backup set or a single backup set plus one or more incremental back ups."
Especially because starting from the most recent incremental backup is exactly the contrary to what most users would expect.
Following onscreen instructions is good, but when those instructions go against what is expected... .

  • Backup catalog files not readable by Elements 6

I have been using PSE 6 for quite a while and have backed up my catalog several times with no problem.  For some reason, this time, when saving it to my ext hard drive, PSE saved them in some odd tagged files which i will include.  One of the files I can open but it is not the catalog that I was intending to save.  I have tried opening each of the files but to no avail.  Is there any way to restore this catalog or is it lost forever?  These are the files that it saved in my elements sequel folder:
    backupCT DAT file 1KB
Catalog PSEDB File 368KB (I can access this one)
    collstatus DAT File 1KB
    itemData.mk4 MK4 File 221KB
    Tagstatus DAT File 1KB
    Thumb.5 Cache File 2,143KB
This is where the catalog was saved to
    computer>Exp Drive>From Elements>Elements Sequel>Elemenst Sequel
Are there any downloads that I could use to open the cache file?
Thanks for any help you can give.

It'll do no good -- the cach file only contains the thumbnails.
Can you make another, full backup?

  • Lost captions when restoring from backup catalog.

Restoring from my photoshop elements 8 backup catalog to Premiere Elements 12 running under Windows 8.1 was successful but for the captions which are not appearing. How do regain visibility of these captions?

Where did the pictures come from - where they taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, saved from emails/websites etc, or where they originally synced from your computer ? If they were taken with the iPad/saved from via kit/emails then they should be in the backup so the restore should have copied them back. If they were originally synced from your computer then they aren't included in the backup so you will need to re-sync them via the Photos tab if you want them back on the iPad.

  • Restoring multiple catalogs from Elements 9 to new computer

I currently am using Elements 9 with Windows 7. I will be getting a new computer with Windows 8.1. I have 5 catalogs. All are backed up on external hard drives. I plan to install Elements 9 on the new computer and then restore the catalogs. The catalogs are in chronological order. Should I restore them in any particular order, and if so, should I do the more recent catalog or the oldest one first?
I guess I should also ask if Elements 9 will be compatible with Windows 8.1.
    Thanks for any advice!

I think Elements 9 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
You can restore your catalogs in whichever order you want. They are totally independent.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
The only trap you might fall in could be if you have different catalogs pointing to the same images (a very bad idea since what you do in a catalog is ignored by the other(s)). Then the order of restore would be meaningful and you should restore in chronological order. Alternatively, you could ignore the backup order and point each restore to a different master folder; that way you end up with a faithful restore of your backups at the price of having duplicate image files. That's what I'd do if the catalogs having common photo files are sub-catalogs of a bigger one.

How do I get my catalogs from elements 8 to elements 11?

    It depends...
If you are still on the same computer and OS, the Organizer in PSE11 (or PSE12) will be able to convert the old catalog to its own format, while keeping the old catalog unchanged.
If you are changing computer, drive or OS, the best method is via a full backup and restore:

  • HELP!!! CAN'T RESTORE OLD CATALOG TO NEW HARD DRIVE

    July 12, 2010
    Hello,
Thank you for any help you can give with this rather desperate problem.
I have installed a replacement hard drive in my Dell Windows Vista laptop and reloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0.  I am unable to reconnect Elements with my old photo organizer catalog.
Thus the system says I have Elements installed, with a catalog with zero photos in it. When in fact I have 12,000 fotos all captioned, dated and tagged for the Elements organizer.
Elements HELP has nothing about reconnecting to an old photo catalog.
Is it possible (???) that Elements does not keep the catalog separate from the program itself – so that when the program itself is lost in the switch to a new hard drive, the catalog is also lost (unless the user made a backup somewhere)?
    Anyway, here’s what happened:
I had made a fairly recent backup of the catalog to an external hard drive, so I copied that backup onto my new hard drive. Then in the Elements Organizer, I clicked on File; Restore Catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive. In the window that popped up, I directed it to the backup file (Backup.tly) and specified a location for restoring files and catalog. Then I clicked on Restore.
Up came a window that named one of my 12,000 fotos and said these approximate words “File already exists, do you want to overwrite it?”. I finally said Yes, and then it went on to another of my 12,000 fotos and asked the same question. I assume it planned to go through all 12,000 fotos, but I can’t imagine why.
But instead of continuing, I then got a window that said, “Error encountered while restoring catalog. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade to the latest available firmware for your specific disc drive before trying again.” (By the way, all my other programs are working fine on the new hard drive.)
I sure hope someone out there can tell me what’s going on. Thank you so much.
    Don

You copied the backup onto your new hard drive? Yes or no? Where was it before?
Then did you try to restore to the exact same location where you placed the copy?
HEre is the proper way to restore a catalog: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402894.html
By the way ... you say: "Elements HELP has nothing about  reconnecting to an old photo catalog." I disagree.
You say: "Is it possible (???) that Elements does  not keep the catalog separate from the program itself" not only is it possible, but Elements does indeed keep the catalog separate from the program itself.

  • Elements 10, after restoring pictures demand reconnecting!

Elements 10, after restoring all the files are on the computer, but catalog doesn't show any of the pictures, says they all need to be reconnected!? A huge job for 47 000 pictures... Did it for the second time now, re-installed the program in between. What now?!

    Yep, you got it.
Had to re-install the whole machine in trying to get Organizer 12 working, installing flash memory of tera and everything. (Didn't help.)
Before that process took backup with Organizer 10, in July 2014.
Backup still available, run it back on the computer yesterday with same results as today after re-installing the Elements 10. (Got so fed up with Adobe that it took a while to get back on the saddle.)
Yesterday used original location, today didn't prompt to create same folder structure but otherwise same location.
ALL files are missing. Yes. Immediately after backup.
Been trying to reconnect, but the pictures don't get any less (47 225 to reconnect all the time) and all the time I get the message that they already exists in the catalog.
Pictures and videos take about 198 Gb.
I have 5 external hard drives, mostly I use the ones with tera space. Pictures seem to all be correctly and fully restored, folder structure is correct and the ones that I have opened seem to work. Even if they would not be, I still have the pics in some other place as originals.
Most of all I would like to save the hard work I've done tagging and evaluating all the pictures.
And I hope to God I soon get to make another backup knowing that everything is allright.
As I told you, this is the second time of restoring with the same result. Not doing it the third time with knowing that something is fundamentally different.
