PS Elements 6.0, Vista: Moving Files

I need to move my massive set of files off of my computer and onto an external drive (I need the space on my computer hard drive for work). I have all the files backed up already on a third hard drive. Here is the problem.
1) In order to not lose the tags for all the photos, I did "move" within photoshop, assuming that the program would then be able to know where the photos were now placed. However, when I did this operation it did not know where the photos were, so when I go to a photo in the Organizer and call it up, it has to search for it. I direct it to the new location on the external hard drive that now has the photos, but it seems to need me to do this one-by-one, which will take days with 10,000 photos. Is there a way to have it do one massive "connect" process with all photos, so I do not have to do it one-by-one?
2) In copying, it did not retain the file structure. I have all photos in files such as "Montreal with Family" or "Creative photos" which helps me locate them if I do not use photoshop. But these were not retained. The result is one massive file on the new hard drive. I am not sure why the move process did not include the file structure. How can I do a "move" that includes this file structure?
Item #1 and #2 are related. One solution is to just copy all the files, with the existing file structure, using Windows explorer, but then do a collective "hook" up from Elements 6.0 to these new files, if possible.
3) I think that the tags are really kept with the thumbnails in Elements -- not in the photo files themselves. Is that right? If so, while I have always backed up the photos themselves many times, it seems that I should also backup the thumbnail structure and tags that Photoshop uses. Where is the file kept with that information, so I can make sure to back it up?
4) While I am at it, I bought Lightroom because I heard it was better at managing files, but can not figure out how to get Lightroom to recognize the hundreds of tags I built up within Elements. Is there a way to do that? Until I know how to do that, I will not switch over to Lightroom to manage files.

Ray,
It sounds like you moved your photos to the external drive using the File > Move command. As you discovered, that command moves individual files and does not preserve the folder structure. (A point of terminology to avoid future confusion: a file is an individual photo, document, movie, etc. A folder is the thing that contains many files.)
I think you ended up with lots of missing files in your catalog because of a bug in the PSE 6 Move command. When you move a file into a folder that already has a file of the same name, that second file is permanently deleted. Since you were moving all the files in your catalog into a single folder, you were bound to end up with many that had the same name.
To move all your photo folders to the external drive preserving their structure, you can use Display > Folder Location view:
http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos

The locations of your photos, along with tags, albums, stacks, dates/times, captions, thumbnails, etc. are stored in your catalog. You can find the location of your current catalog by doing Help > System Info. You should definitely back it up. If you use PSEs builtin backup, it will do that for you. But if you prefer to use a general-purpose backup utility, then make sure your catalog is being backed up, for sure.

Lightroom 2 can import PSE 6 catalogs.

  • Pathway problem when moving files in PSE

I use PSE 6.0 and recently had to reload my operating system (OS).  After reloading my OS I reinstalled PSE 6.0 and restored my catalog to a new location on my hard drive.  I had my catalog backed up onto DVD's.  The restore worked and I went to link missing photos, b/c I did the PSE 'no no' and moved files outside of the PSE program.  It appeared that the missing links were reconnected.  I started to spot-check some of the file property locations and noticed that many of the photo properties had the restore location that I restored the catalog to.  I did not want to keep the photo in this location, so I went to move these folders and files to my external drive where I keep my pictures (I have two drives: one for video and one for photos).  When I try to move the files in PSE to my external drive it moves them to my external video drive instead.  The problem is that when I follow the pathway it moved them to, I do not have this link on my video drive.  The pathway, however, is identical to my photo pathway.  For example.  I have a picture with the property of C:/Documents and Settings/Amy/My Documents/Restore Adobe PSE 100111/My Picture Downloads/Pella Trip.  I tried to move this file to my external K drive (which is my photo drive).  In PSE I click on file then move then browse and moved the file to K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  In PSE when I go to verify that the file was moved to that drive, instead in properties it tells me that the file location is M (my video external drive) and lists the pathway as M:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I go to START and click on that external drive to follow the pathway to find the photo, it is not on M.  M does not even have the pathway to follow as I do not even have M:Micah's camera in that location.  I have tried disconnecting my external drive M and tried to save the file from the C location to my K drive and then the file becomes an offline file and I have another problem.  So then I tried to reconnect that particular file listed on M but since it's not really on M, I follow the K pathway name and find the file where I requested it to be saved which was K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I find the file and click on reconnect I get the message that the file already exists in the catalog.  Then in the dialog box it says M:Micha's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07 was not connected to K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I click on ok to exit the dialog box my photo is then missing.  I then can't do anything with it.  The pathway in PSE won't move it b/c I can't link it.  It says the file is on my M drive, but it really isn't.  I don't know what to do next.  I would like to move my photo files/folders from C (my hard drive) to K (my external photo drive).  I do not know why PSE is moving them to M (my video drive) which doesn't take me to that file.  I have searched the forums but have found no problems similar to this.  I'm not sure what to do to fix this.  Sorry this got so long...Can anyone help me?

Highlighting a batch of images and dragging from the PSE9 Media Browser to a folder in the left hand panel, located on external HDD works fine although I’m using Vista and Windows 7 and automatically invokes the elements Move procedure.
Make sure the new folder has a blue icon to indicate it is being managed in Organizer. If not right click on the folder and choose Import to Organizer.

  • How do I upgrade elements 10 to open raw files from my Canon 70d?

How do I upgrade elements 10 to open raw files from my canon 70d?

Normally, if there are any updates for your version of PSE then they should be offered to you automatically.  However, you can also check if there are any new updates by going to:
    Help >> Updates
If your camera is relatively new then even by getting the updates you may not be able to edit raw files from the new camera because old versions of PSE are normally not updated as soon as the new version hits the market.  We are currently at version 13 so version 10 was stopped long time ago.  However, you can see a workaround at this link where I posted a video to get things moving:
<Why can't I open my RAW files from my Nikon D7000 ?? I can open RAW files from my old Nikon D70's but not my D7000...>

  • Trouble moving files in lightroom 2.5

I can't seem to resolve a problem with moving files in Lightroom 2.5. While in the program, can not drag and drop images from one folder to another. If drag and drop from IE (Windows Vista), and then go back into Lightroom 2.5, catalog does not update or recognize the move was done. I have to resync the folders every time.
Based on tutorial videos that I've watched, it should be capable of these very basic things. I'm still new to LR and learning but can't seem to get past this. Is this a bug or setup issue? Not sure what I'm missing but it's driving me nuts, would appreciate any help.

When you want to move a photo to another folder in LR, you have to drag the thumbnail, not the rectangle around the thumbnail.
Lightroom does not find the new location of photos moved in Windows. Simply not a feature of the program. Therefore, you are best off to do the move in LR.
Based on tutorial videos that I've watched, it should be capable of these very basic things. I'm still new to LR and learning but can't seem to get past this. Is this a bug or setup issue? Not sure what I'm missing but it's driving me nuts, would appreciate any help
I don't know what tutorials you are watching, but as I said, locating files that have been moved in Windows is not a feature/capability of Lightroom. You have to point Lightroom to the new location of the photo, or better yet, move the photo in LR. Or, even better, don't move photos from one folder to another, instead browse your photos in Lightroom, using keywords, metadata and collections (instead of folders) as your method of organization.

  • ITunes moving files

For the last few months I've been having issues with iTunes moving my music files. This is a problem because I have a large music collection and each time the files move I must go back and place them into the iTunes music folder. My settings are so:
Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized is on
Make copies to iTunes Media folder is on
I am running Vista with the newest update of iTunes
It seems that every month or so iTunes decides to select random folders and move them out of the iTunes Music directory. From here they are placed into my default music folder given to me by Windows. My iTunes music folder is located inside of the Windows music folder. So currently this is my situation.
Username/Music/iTunes/iTunesMusic is where most of my music is (and where it should be)
Username/music is where some of my artist files and folders are being moved to
My issue: iTunes cannot find the files thus giving me that wonderful exclamation point
This usually leads to me putting everything back in place and manually finding all of the songs through iTunes
Please help, I've wasted quite a deal of time on moving files and folders

I don't use WMP either but a few summers back after an update, I noticed a lot of random changes in itunes...and I knew I hadn't changed 500 tracks worth of tags on things I hadn't played for over a year. It took me hours to fix the mess WMP had made of my tags.
itunes is, frankly, too stupid to do this - it only gets info from the internet when you rip a new CD.
A lot of folks don't believe WMP is doing this, since they never open WMP. But WMp can run in the background and change things. Then the next time they look in itunes, itunes has read the changes made by WMP.
Long story short, after I fixed my tags and made sure EVERYTHING was turned off in WMP, it didn't happen again. Until a few months ago, for some reason I opened WMP and saw a bunch of my itunes files in the WMP library. I looked back and they were added right after a windows update that included a WMP update. The option on the WMP security tab was allowing web pages to open WMP in the background.
You'll have to wait and see if this happens again. I realize it's not something you can say right now has been fixed. Let us know in a month or two if it has stopped or continues.

  • Bridge CS5 closes when moving files

Bridge CS5 abruptly closes when moving files.  It does not matter if I drag and drop or if I cut/copy and paste to different folders -- I get the same behavior either way.  When I try to move files, I get a Windows dialogue box saying the program has experienced a problem and will close.  After Brdige closes and I open it again, the files have been moved.  Still, it is a pain to have the program crash everytime I move a file.
I have a new computer with great specs and lots of memory (see below).  I did not have this problem before and only began to experience it recently.  The only changes since then are that I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Dreamweaver.  I found another instance of this problem in the forums and followed the advice of disabling all scripts, but it did not help.  What can I do to move files in Bridge?
    Computer: Studio XPS 9100
    Processor: Intel Core i7-920 processor(8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
    RAM: 12GB DDR3 SDRAM,1333MHZ, 6x2GB
    Video Card: ATI Radeon HD5670 1GB GDDR5
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

I have a computer setup very similar to yours, in fact you have one notch higher ram and video card.  It should work.  I do use drag and drop sometimes, but almost always use right click and "copy to".  It will list the last 10 places you have visited so it is easy to click on the folder (or visit it first).  More of a hassle if you have to browse.
I had to add "copy to and move to" to the right click function in Vista and Win7.  Check on-line and there is an automatic program that inserts it into the registry.  It confident instructions are given to do it manually.
Have no idea why it will not work.  Can you drag and drop in Win Exp?
    Hope this helps.

  • Moving files in Lr - very slow

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but the search on "move" does not return anything.
My issue: moving files between folders (on the same drive) seems to be very slow in Lr. Is there anyway to improve performance. The current performance I am seeing, often 20-30 seconds to move a file, is unworkable. I am trying to reorganize a significant number of files, which are also in collections.
    OS: Vista
    Computer: Dell quad core
    Disk file indexing = off
    Thanks in advance
    Rory

I too find most of the usual operations--move, copy, make new folder ,etc, inordinately slow compared to using a file browser, or photo browser, such as Bridge. I do a lot of that, but not in LR, unless it is just the odd image that needs moving as I am working.
Better off doing that on the outside, and then resynching the directories, or even the entire collection (while you eat dinner) to make sure the db is kept up to date reflecting your moves.

  • Legitimate newly purchased Premiere Elements-10 32-bit install files not available

    Friends:
I purchased an $1100 Nikon camera and the deal included OEM PS Premiere Elements 10.
Legit purchase with a CD and legit Serial #.
Can't install because what is Adobe's fault, not the camera vendor's and certainly not mine.
    Adobe's own published notice:
"The 64-bit version of Adobe Premiere Elements 10 only installs on Windows 7 64 bit. If you have Windows XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit, it's necessary to install the 32-bit version. Because the Adobe Download Assistant automatically downloads the 64-bit version in error, it's necessary to download the 32-bit version manually through alternate means."
The problem is that the same holds true for installing on XP Pro SP3 and Adobe makes no mention of it in the above admission.
Then, Adobe's own Solutions 1, 2 & 3 for manual download all fail, even after fussing for days over it.
Even Solution 3, the last ditch option, fails perhaps because Elements 11 is out and Adobe has killed the 10 download Ftp sites.
Files I am unable to download from Adobe (without entrapment by so called Free Dowload sites) are:
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.exe
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.7z
How can I solve my dilemma, being denied my right to learn Elements from a legally purchased 10 and being
forced to purchase 11 instead on top it. Fair?
I am requesting Adobe politely to make it possible to download the Adobe recommended two files withou hassles.
I must mention in this context my own  (and thousands of others') sad experience with Flash updates. Just follow
my own (and others') posts in Adobe forums. Plus, just read the Internet posts along these lines:
"It's impossible to download anything from Adobe. I have given up and I have given up on Adobe products."
Not that I want to, but I am forced into echoing the same sentiment.
    Can anyone help, please ?
    Thanks,
    Pradip A.

    Hello Mr. Wright:
The download now works. Appreciate your help.
The ...7z file is 1.37 Gb long. I have super high speed Fibre Optic Internet connection with Bell. I rarely have the ocassion to download files of this size. After downloading more than 1 Gb, the transfer hung - either at the Client end, or at the Server end. Bell is sending tech Thursday to mitigate some line noise they detected. Hopefully, the stars will fall into the right place before long.

  • CS3 / Vista / local files on NAS - DW crawls and is unuseable

Subject pretty much says it all.
DW CS3 on a Vista laptop.  My development cfm files are on a NAS mapped as Y:\Sites\[sitename].  I primarily use this laptop for quick fixes but that came screeching to a halt today.
I opened up a site and told it to sync via ftp to the remote server.  After about 4 minutes it told me there were 10 small files to sync.  Syncing took almost 10 minutes.  (no, it was not the remote server being slow).
When I opened a file locally from the Y drive to edit it, it was extremely slow in code view.  Copy / Paste took 30 seconds to complete.  Even scrolling the page up and down in DW had severe delays.
I did a bunch of Google searching on it and found many people with this problem back to the CS version, but no real answer to it.  The NAS drive is fine and even Windows Explorer is quick bringing it up and moving files around.  This isn't a huge site - maybe 100 cfm templates and none of the pages are hugely complex.
No other software on this laptop has any problems accessing the NAS - MySQL, PS, Office etc.
Any ideas where to look for a patch or setting that can help this behavior?

I've never used a NAS, but can you use a UNC path? If so, any difference in performance?
I have two Vista boxes on this little network and they both take a long time to connect to drives on other computers. Once connected, they transfer files over the local network at expected speeds, though. I don't use DW's FTP, but I could test that later if needed (CS3 on Vista Home Premium, DW8 on Vista Ultimate).

  • Another person asking about moving files in lightroom

I have spent several hours today trying to sort out, what I thought was going to be an easy question.
Moving files from my internal hdd to an external one.
Ok, I know it should be easy, a trillion posts say how to do this.
    Sys info (from LR itself):
    Lightroom version: 3.3 [711369]
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
    Version: 6.0 [6002]
    Application architecture: x86
    System architecture: x86
    Physical processor count: 2
    Processor speed: 1.7 GHz
    Built-in memory: 3061.6 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 716.8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 343.8 MB (47.9%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 318.7 MB
    Memory cache size: 0.0 MB
    System DPI setting: 96 DPI
    Desktop composition enabled: Yes
    Displays: 1) 1280x800
My files and their backups were scattered across 3 drives, I reformatted (a complete format - not a quick format) then proceeded to move the larger part of my library onto it using lightroom, apply some metadata and allowing lightroom to put them in date specific folders.
Phew that was a long job.
Now I wanted to take what was left of my library that currently resides on my C:/ drive in my laptop and move it onto the external 1tb drive.  It says they are already there.
Searching for them outside of windows says they are not there.  Trying to use the import dialog with the move function comes up with nothing to move.
I could drag and drop but I get a dialog box saying I can't undo anything that has been done to these files before.  I want to keep and be able to edit/undo my edits.  Isn't that what LR3 is supposed to be?
Anyways; I'd love some help.  I have tried watching some of David Marx videos (from the lightroom lab site) and a large number of threads on this forum.  I'm stumped and I'm frustrated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Okay....
I think I've answered my own question... sort of.
I tried the drag and drop method of copying and that seems to work.  I don't understand the dialog box and why it makes it seem so final.
So, I don't know why the import function didn't work, when the other night it did, but the drag and drop method worked where the import dialog failed and I'll have to change the folders and metadata manually.

  • Elements does not recognise prel file

I saved a project to DVD (photos with background music) Elements does not recognise "prel" file when trying to reload project. How do i open file in Premiere Elements 10

    Chris (Herbie53)
There was no Premiere Elements 5 and 6. The version numbers went 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (latest) So you probably use Premiere Elements 4 or maybe 7 on probably Windows 32 bit XP or Vista.
Case 1. (Here we assume that you have the project.prel file (project) saved to a DVD disc as data disc.)
Even if you had saved that older Premiere Elements project file (project.prel) along with copies of the media that went into it, it is still questionable whether that old project.prel could be opened in Premiere Elements 12. But, assuming that the media was still connected to it (which it probably is not), you could try by right clicking the project.prel file and selecting Open With Premiere Elements 12. Have you gone that route, and the project would not open or you were greeted by "Where is the file...?" messages.
Case 2. (Here we assume that, when you were using the the older program, you took the project Timeline to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc...this is not the project.prel file, but an export of it.)
In this situation, if you put your DVD disc in the burner tray and explored it, you would see two folders, one named OpenDVD and another named VIDEO_TS. This is your best case scenario. If this is the case.....
    a. Put your DVD disc in the burner tray.
    b. Open Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace. Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
In Change Settings, set the project preset for either NTSC DV Standard or NTSC DV Widescreen. For now, we will assume NTSC DV Standard. Then, before you exit that area, in the last dialog that you see (new project dialog), make sure you have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project".
    c. Next, back in the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace, use Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive/Video Importer where you will select video files from the VIDEO_TS Folder to bring into the Premiere Elements 12 project. You will have to redo the menu in 12. The video files that you want from the VIDEO_TS Folder typically start with VTS_01_1.VOB and continue in series which can be detailed later.
Goal right now is to sort through the details so that we are in sync on what you have in order to enable us to be confident about the troubleshooting strategy.
We will be watching for your comments and results.
    Thanks.

Add On.....The classical recommendation has always been to complete a project in the program in which it was created. But let us see what can be done here.

  • PSE7 Reconnect moved files(a bunch of them)

    Hello,
I had PSE4 installed on my box then I upgraded to Vista and PSE4 stopped working fine. So I stopped using PSE4. I do have 40k images and I did move some around, grouped by year they where shot.
Past days I've upgraded (finally) to PSE7 and of course those files were reported as missing. Reconnecting them all would be a pain, I don't think PSE7 is up for the task. I have a feeling that they don't use a indexed approached when they search for files, why do I think that ? Because when I reconnect them one by one second time the same folders are being parsed.
Another thing I tried was to import them again - sure they would be detected as duplicates but I hoped that Adobe developers would check if the duplicate file are connected and if they are not connect them.
To me that seem to be the best approach to reconnect the files - well that what I thought as a software engineer... but it looks like the Adobe engineers are disagreeing with my logic since such thing is not implemented...
So, now, at the end of this long message, what do I do to reconnect my files ?
Anyone, any cool and good ides ? Can't wait to read your thoughts!
    Q
    Ps.
Why this whole thing is so hard to be figured it out by Adobe ? Files are bound to be moved around, different drives, different folders, why not changing the approach like the guys at Google(Picasa) are doing... Picasa is just awesome dealing with moving files around, new files, and watching folders.

    Evan,
If you have a thumbnail in the catalog that's not connected to its file (it shows a "?" icon on the thumbnail), and you don't wish to keep it in your catalog any longer, you can safely delete it using Edit > Delete.

  • Elements 7 on Vista Media Center

    Hi,
I am running Photoshop Elements 7 on Vista Media Center and am unable to get the Media Center add-in to work properly.
If I open the Elements catalog from photoshop it displays all the thumbnails correctly (some are stored on a local hard drive and some are on a network drive).
In the Media Center plugin it only displays thumbnails of images located on the local hard drive. No thumbnails of any images on the network drives are displayed.
This cannot be a permissions issue since Photoshop Elements Organiser can access all of the images on the network drives and so can Media Center's photo viewer.
Is Photoshop Elements not capable of accessing images stored on a network drive?
    thanks,
    warren.

To rule out obscure problems with permissions, I suggest setting the permissions of the catalog folder and its contents and your picture folders and their contents to Allow Full Control for Everyone.
Also, see this section from the PSE 7 Readme:
    HOME NETWORKING TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: Photos and videos appear as black thumbnails on Media Center Edition (MCE) Extenders.
ANSWER 1: This problem occurs when the Photoshop Elements Digital Home feature does not have permission to view the files in your user account.  To learn more about security and permission issues with MCE Extenders, check the documentation that came with your device. To fix this problem, if your photos and videos are stored in your My Documents folder, you can use the Media Center Extender Manager to grant access to your My Documents folder to the MCE Extender
Launch the Media Center Extender Manager by going to Start > Accessories >Media Center >Media Center Extender Manager
Choose File > Settings.  This will launch the Media Center Extender Setup program, showing you the Content Settings page.
Make sure the Make all My Documents Folders Available setting is checked.  Continue to the end of the setup program by clicking Next at each page.
Click Finish when the last page loads. After running these steps, your photos and videos should display on your MCE extender.
ANSWER 2: Shared folders: An alternative resolution is to make the folder(s) your photos and videos are in, as shared folders on your machine. This will allow access to those photos on remote devices, including MCE Extenders. IMPORTANT: this will also allow access to your photos and videos from other computers on your network.  Make sure you understand the security risks of shared folders before using this option.

  • Moved files incorrectly now their missing entirely...

I'm a first time user of Elements but an familiar with most other Adobe products. I wanted to edit the background of an image so I needed to open other images to merge. I drag-and-dropped those images from a windows folder into the catalog window in Elements.  Now I can only see the  thumbnails of the files in the Elements catalog - the actual files are  nowhere to be found. I've searched my whole PC for image names, in case  they were moved elsewhere - no luck.  Elements will search for the file but it also comes up short.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi.
In the Elements Catalog, select the image thumbnail and press <Alt> + <Enter> to show the properties dialog. In the properties dialog, click the Folder Icon (Reveal in Explorer). This will take you to the image if it is available.
Else try the undelete utility as suggested by the other user.
    Thanks/ Tarun
