PS opens files but fails to display them

hi there! ive already done some searching but did not find anyone else having my problem.
im using vista x64 and PS CS4 (updated). the problem occurs on both 32bit and 64bit versions.
when i open an image with PS (does not matter which type or which way to open it), PS seems to open the file correctly, but does not display it at all.
everything looks like the image is opened (f.e. small thumb of it in the layers window and the name of it in the title bar), but where the image should be displayed in fullsize you only see the grey PS background.
it seems that besides this PS works completely fine. f.e. when i use the paint bucket tool on the grey area in the middle, the layer thumb changes to the color used..
another strange thing: when i switch to another program and switch back to PS the grey background is gone and instead you see whatever program is beneath PS at that moment.. you can move the PS window and see right trough it, only the PS control windows are still displayed. thats what you see in the attached image: there is no screenshot of my explorer loaded in PS, it should be a picture of keira knightley.
so far i have already tried to delete the PS settings and reinstall PS but it wont help.
any help would be very appreciated!

[edit] the problem occured all of a sudden. the day before PS worked completely fine.
I have quite new gfx drivers installed.

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

Reader opens file but can't display it properly

I've encountered this problem before and did then find a solution for it, even in this forum, if memory serves.
I can open any file without a problem, but the display leaves things to be desired. Basically I have a horizontal stripe on the upper- and lowermost boundary that refreshes sporadically when I scroll up and down. I know the solution is simple and easy, I just don't know anymore what exactly it was and can't seem to find it somehow right now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try turning off any thing that boosts the speed of your video display.

Well, first, just make sure it's the Mac version and not the Windows version (which indeed would not run on your Mac). You say "Windows Office" which is why I mention it. I think you probably just mean "Microsoft Office" though.
Next, is this on a disk (DVD), or did you purchase and download it from the Microsoft site?

1.5.1 Opening File in PlsqlNode incorrectly displays a default connection

I have just noticed that opening a file as a PlsqlNode (based on file type preferences) displays a default connection (the connection for the current tab). However, when compiling, you are prompted to select which connection you want to run against - ie there is no connection associated with the editor. This happens regardless of how you open the file (File > Open, Open toolbar button, Ctrl-O, double click in Files navigator).
This does not happen for SQL Script file types, where no connection is displayed on opening them.

Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
drwxrwxrwx 13 yourusername staff hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

Firefox "loads" but fails to display.

After updating Firefox, the browser loads (it shows up as running in Task Manager) but fails to display on screen. In other words, it is completely unusable. I've uninstalled & reinstalled the program, without favorable results.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

Opening files in apps that created them

OSX drives me nuts. Preview is the default for opening files, and when I follow the instructions for "changing all" so all my Photoshop files open in Photoshop, Word in Word, etc., it won't let me do it...it defaults back to Preview!
So, what can I do to have ALL my files open in the application that created them when I double-click on them, whether they are Classic apps or OSX apps?

Preview is not the default for opening all files. Each application uses a unique way of identifying its document file - an extension. Word uses ".doc", for example. If you don't make any changes to the default application used the correct application will open when you double-click the document file.
You can gain more extensive control over file associations by installing the freeware RCDefaultApp (www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.)
Perhaps your system needs a bit of maintenance:

TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files still imports and displays them as seperate images

Hi, I am taking RAW + JPEG files on a Nikon D810. The RAW files are saving to a CF (primary slot) and JPEGs to an Eye-Fi card (secondry slot). When I am importing into Lightroom 5 directly from the camera, even though I have 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files' UNchecked in preferences, it still imports and displays them as seperate images. I am trying to import the JPEG as a sidecar file only to the RAW file as I have read about but this is not happening, any ideas why? Thanks

Well in Lightroom they are apart from each other before the actual import, all the JPGs list first then all the NEF files next. The same actual photo as the NEF or as the JPEG both have the same file name apart from the .JPG or .NEF so that is not the problem. The NEFs go to the CF card and the JPGs go to the EyeFi SD card, I think you are onto the issue but I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. I guess I need to change a setting on the D810 itself. There really doesn't seem to be any other settings apart from the RAW + JPEG vs only one or the other and allocating which card is primary for the RAWs and which card is secondry for the JPEGs. I really need the JPEGs to go to the EyeFi SD (secondary) for live iPad image viewing and not to the same primary card (CF) as the NEFs (RAWs) go. This does seem to be a typical setup so I would think it has been encountered before.

How can we handle graphics in DITA source files in order to display them correctly both in PDF and H

We are using FM9 to publish PDF and HTML output from DITA source files and we cannot find a way to display images correctly. By adjusting the appropriate DPI, the image gets correctly displayed in HTML but not in PDF where it appears cropped according to the the text frames of the source file in FM9, like this:
We have tried to enlarge the text frame in the source file but for some reasons FrameMaker doesn't take these changes into account.
By modifying the attribute of the element <fig> (expanse = page), it was possible to improve a bit the rendering in the PDF but not completely.
Our graphics are in JPG format.
Any help on this is highly appreciated.

DITA doesn't provide a way to store additional information about anchored frame properties (since there is no "frame" element, just image), that's why FrameMaker doesn't allow you to set the frame size to something other than the image dimensions.
The "standard" DITA way to reference an image with two different DPIs is to insert multiple fig/image elements and conditionalize (via attributes and ditaval) each image so it shows up in the proper output. This can be a bit tedious to insert two images for each instance, but that's the typical way to handle it (unless you've got a CMS that switches the images for different output types).
If you use DITA-FMx, it provides a "fmdpi" feature which allows you to tag an image with the DPI you want to use in the FrameMaker-generated output, but the DITA coding sets no DPI (or height/width), so it uses the default image size for your HTML output.

I can open audio files but can't find them with Finder or Spotlight.

I wanted to delete a few songs and found that by searching in Finder or Spotlight they couldn't be found.
I can open the files in Finder by opening iTunes, ctrl clicking the song and selecting 'view in Finder'. If I then 'get info' on the file it gives a folder, 'iTunes music' that I can't find. Is it possible the folder is there but hidden or that 'get info' is giving the wrong address?
I've recently moved my data (only) onto a new computer using Migration Assistant. On my old computer I'd find the songs by searching in Finder with no problems.
Here's an example incase I've not been clear:
I ctrl click on 'the boy who killed time' and select 'open in finder'.
It opens in finder and i again ctrl click on it and select 'get info'.
Get info gives me the following address for the file: Macintosh HD ▸ epoche ▸ Music ▸ iTunes ▸ iTunes Music ▸ vincent vincent and the villains ▸ are you ready for the country.
If I look for the song by clicking through the folders in finder (opening 'epoche' then 'Music' then 'iTunes') I can't find the folder 'iTune Music' in the 'iTunes' folder.
Any ideas? Rachel

Copying music files to Mac HD iTunes folder, but iTunes doesnt display them

Hi. Presently I am copying all the my iTunes music files from a hard drive that was used on my old PC onto my iTunes music folder of my new MacBook. Having copied a selection of these files my iTunes does not pick them up and the only way i can make it find them is to go to the folder of the individual artist album files and highlight to Open in iTunes.
Surely there must be an easier way!
(The files which i am copying are MP3 while the files i already have on my Mac iTunes are MPEG 4... does this affect it?)

Drag the files into the Library icon in the iTunes source list. iTunes uses a file to keep track of the songs in its library and the location of each instead of checking the contents of the iTunes music folder to determine what appears in the library; therefore, items added to the iTunes music folder manually won't appear in the library.

Pages temporarily deleted my files but won't redownload them

From what I've been told by a friend, the iWork apps will temporarily delete the files in them so that you have more space for better functionality. They will then redownload them from the iCloud when you need them. I think my Pages was in the process of redownloading my files when i decided to close it as i had to go on and do other things. Now i have no idea how to get my ipad to continue redownloading the files. I've tried closing and opening it and I've left it for a few days but nothing has happened.

Any help is greatly appreciated !
