PS OVM
this is query regarding Oracle VM manager and ORACLE VM server ( what do i need VM manager for??) do i need OS or not?
I am confused as in what do install first and do i run both.
Also is it essential to OVM or i can use my already existing VM which has linux installed and continue with DB / app and web.
Please detail out the steps for proceeding with PS OVM.
Thanks
Hello,
PSOVM needs an Oracle VM installation. Oracle VM is a bare-metal visrtualization software, it does not need any OS prior its installation onto a server which is dedicated to Oracle VM.
Strictly speaking, you do not need Oracle VM Manager to make a PSOVM working, but if you are not very familiar with this tool, this is probably much easier, Oracle VM Manager offering you a GUI to make all your virtual machine with mouse clicks instead of command lines.
Again, Oracle VM won't be installed on top of any OS, so regarding your third sentence, PSOVM will come instead of existing env onto your server, not in addition.
I wrote several blogs entries regarding PSOVM, you could have a look out of there :

PS: there is a forum dedicated to Peoplesoft OVM, this thread has been moved for easier reading, please continue there :

How can I convert an OVM vm (.img) to VDI (virtualbox)?
Hi,
how can I convert an OVM vm (.img) to VDI (virtualbox)?
Is .img format a raw image? If yes can I use "VBoxManage convertdd" to convert from .img to vdi?
tnx & regards,
S.Hi,
"VBoxManage convertdd" solved.

How to configure multiple IP-Adresses on one NIC in OVM
Hi guys,
we have some OVM Servers 2.2.1 installed. They all have three NICs in them (eth0-2). For eth0 and eth2 we need multiple IP-Adresses configured to work with our storage solution. The configuration should look like this:
eth0:0 - 192.168.31.x
eth0:1 - 192.168.33.x
eth1 - 192.168.0.x
eth2:0 - 192.168.32.x
eth2:1 - 192.168.34.x
I tried creating gonfig files ifcfg-eth0:0 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts with the following content
DEVICE=eth0:0
BOOTPROTO=static
ONBOOT=yes
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.31.3
TYPE=Ethernet
HWADDR=00:1b:21:06:f0:fa
But it does not work. Neither eth0:0 nore an additional xenbr is configured when i restart.
I can configure multiple ip addresses for xenbr0 by calling something like "ifconfig xenbr0 192.168.31.x". But these settings get lost as sonn as i reboot the server.
I have already searched google, forums and blogs for a solution but could not find one. I thought that this should be a pretty common task. In "normal" linux it is not an issue at all.
Has somebody any experience with a setup like this? I would really apreciate your help.
Thanks
MarekHi,
configuring IP aliasses seems to work the same way like configuring VLANs. You will have to configure the appropriate bridges at system startup manually.
E.g. this little script is what I use to configure VLANs and briges on my OVM:
#!/bin/bash
echo "Configuring VLANs and bridges\n"
echo "Configuring VLAN 24 on eth2"
vconfig add eth2 24
brctl addbr br2.24
brctl addif br2.24 eth2.24
ifconfig eth2.24 up
ifconfig br2.24 up
echo "Configuring VLAN 31 on eth2"
vconfig add eth2 31
brctl addbr br2.31
brctl addif br2.31 eth2.31
ifconfig eth2.31 up
ifconfig br2.31 up
This script is run at startup by init using this startup skript in /etc/init.d, which is what I think you're missing as you can already seem to bring up the needed IPs manually - you'd have to change the chkconfig accordingly, that is make sure that the config script gets startet after the network has been brought up, like this: # chkconfig: 2345 11 91
[root@oraclevm01 ~]# cat /etc/init.d/vlan-config
#! /bin/bash
# vlan-config configure VLANs
# chkconfig: 2345 11 89
# description: Configures VLANs at boot time before the \
# network is started.
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: $vlan
### END INIT INFO
# Source function library.
. /etc/init.d/functions
if [ ! -f /etc/vlan-config ]; then
exit 0
fi
# See how we were called.
case $1 in
start)
# configure vlans
/etc/vlan-config
echo $"Usage: $0 {start}"
exit 1
esac
exit 0

OVM Server takes long time to boot up - gets stuck for minutes after joining domain
Server takes a long time to reboot. Seems to get stuck for 8-10 minutes every time after joining domain.

Lost connection between ovm-manager and ovm-server (ovm 3.1)
Hi,
I have a manager as a VM on my laptop and a physical server as an ovm-server. Everything is fine when i boot the server but after some time, the manager stop to show the information from the server. in the ovs-agent log file the following messages are repeated regulary
[2013-08-29 13:06:19 6160] DEBUG (notification:289) Trying to connect to manager.
[2013-08-29 13:06:20 6160] DEBUG (notification:291) Connected to manager.
[2013-08-29 13:06:20 6160] ERROR (notification:316) No manager Core API server object for 10:60:4b:88:bc:24:10:60:4b:88:bc:25:fe:ff:ff:ff.
[2013-08-29 13:06:34 6171] ERROR (notification:64) Unable to send notification: (111, 'Connection refused')
I did not reboot neither the server nor the manager. No IP change. Rebooting the manager has no effect.
The only way to restore communication is to restart the ovs-agent on the server, but this restart disable the network card. I must be physical on the server to restart the network.
any help will be very helpful
best regards
Jean-MarcHi,
The are many steps to verify:
Verify with your firewall on the Oracle VM Manager system (service iptables stop).
Verify with a ping between OVM Manager and OVM Server using the IP Address and using the hostname for each one (from OVM Manager : ping ovm-server ; and from OVM Server: ping ovm-manager).
I hope this can help you
Best Regards -
How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs
Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
Thanks
SrinivasYou can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
For your review...
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/configure-vm-templates-1656261.html
Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

How to start virtual OVM Manager and restore server pool which hosts it?
It had to happen... the day I migrate our OVM Manager from an ESX host into an Oracle VM, we have a massive NetApp outage, and everything fails to come back. As a result of having lock errors when trying to start any VMs I noted on the forum various solutions and ended up following the steps concerning stopping ovs-agent and removal of /etc/ovs-agent/db/* on all the servers. Next I re-added the repo to all the servers using repos.py, but of course now none of the servers are in a pool so the --list command shows them as [R] rather than [*], and the /OVS directory is not yet mapped. So the next stage, according to the instructions which I am following, describes using the 'Restore' option in the OVM Manager GUI. Given that /OVS is not mounted and all of the servers are now config-less, I can't see how I can start the OVM Manager VM to get to the aforementioned "restore" option...
Thank Jeebus I kept the ESX copy of OVM manager on (but powered down), as I was able to fire it up and do the restore, and now everything is hunky dory. However, this is our Dev platform and I was going to build the Prod platform and deploy OVM Manager straight into the OVM architecture via the template, rather than having it on ESX, but this issue on the Dev install has made me think twice about the mobius nature of managing the VM architecture from within the VM architecture...
I am assuming I am missing some sort of commandline knowledge, so... given:
- empty db directory
- root repos [R] on all servers
- as yet unmapped /OVS
...how to get the server pool up and get something back into /OVS, and then start my OVM Manager VM so I can 'restore'? Is it even possible? because if it isn't, I'll be blowed if the Prod OVM manager is going to get deployed like this...
And no, there's no money in the budget for extra tin just to sit there running the OVM Manager and nothing else.
TIA

Still nobody seems to know of how to create a server pool on the CLI (outside of OVM Manager) though...There is no way to create a server pool on the CLI without Oracle VM Manager. You either need to use the Web UI of the Manager, or use the ovmcli command-line tool. Both of those require Oracle VM Manager to be running.
However, once the Pool is created, you do not need the Manager to be running to perform simple tasks like starting/stopping guests. That can be done with the xm command-line tool.
I agree with you about running VM Manager as a guest of the Oracle VM Server: I actually don't recommend this in production, unless you have at least two Server Pools. Then you can have the Manager of Pool A hosted by Pool B and vice-versa. Most often however, I recommend a completely independent Manager machine, either physical or hosted on a separate virtualization stack. -

Excerpt "Oracle Linux 5.7 Release Notes",
"Known Issues
Hardware virtualized (HVM) guests with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel always use paravirtualized (PV) drivers
Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel version kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.34.1 adds support for paravirtualized drivers in a HVM guest on Oracle VM. Starting with this kernel version, the default is to present only paravirtualized drivers when running in a hardware virtualized guest. To run kernel-uek --including the drivers-- fully hardware virtualized, an additional kernel boot parameter "xen_emul_unplug=never" must be added to the boot parameters in /etc/grub.conf:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-100.34.1.el5uek ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 xen_emul_unplug=never
Adding this kernel boot parameter makes the kernel also present the emulated drivers as it did before (e.g. the 8139cp network driver). "
Update "grub.conf" to boot non-UEK kernel,

(hd0) /dev/hdaI have had success importing VirtualBox images of OEL 6.4, but I am unable to import Solaris 11 VMs to OVM. When I import a Solaris 11 VM, the grub menu comes up. I select Solaris 11 and press enter. The OS begins to boot and progresses through to this point:
SunOS Release 5.11 Version 11.1 64-bit
Copyright (c) 1983, 2012, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
It is at this point that console window in OVM goes black and OVM registers the shutdown of the VM. I have not been able to get the VM to boot any further through the sequence.
Can you give me some grub configuration changes to try? -

OVM 3.0 iSCSI setup generally and how do i find the iqn
Hi all,
I have just setup an HP P2000 iSCSI SAN and created a few LUN's on it that I want to present to a vm server. How do I do this?
In the SAN SMU utility to add a host I seem to need an iqn - where can I find it. What docs explain this (sorry again for greeness)
I look at wim's blog here:
http://blogs.oracle.com/wim/entry/using_linux_iscsi_targets_with
and a lot of the tools dont seems to be present in my dom0
i look at the official docs :http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E20065_01/doc.30/e18549/storage.htm#autoId4
and they dont really tell me much
where do you suggest to look for guidelines for iSCSI setup with ovm 3.0?
ThanksMartin Brambley wrote:

In the SAN SMU utility to add a host I seem to need an iqn - where can I find it. What docs explain this (sorry again for greeness)Create the iSCSI Storage Array in Oracle VM Manager and edit the Default Access Group. It'll show you the IQNs for each of your Oracle VM Servers. Once you've mapped LUNs to those IQNs, you can refresh the iSCSI Storage Array to see the physical disks. I've noticed that some arrays don't refresh and may require a reboot of Oracle VM Server to see the disks. -
Error creating a new VM on OVM Server using 'xm create'
Hi,
I'm trying to create VM using an existing config file bundled with the OVM distribution, like "xmexample1". I've also ensured that all the entries in it, such as, reference to the kernel image, etc. are correct. However, when I run the command
xm create xmexample1
it fails with the following error
Error(<domain-uuid>, "VM_Metrics")
I noticed that another user had a similar issue, but he was running into it occassionally. However, I'm running into it consistently. Any suggestions on how to solve this?
Thanks,
- NitinDo you have ULN access? If so, you should run up2date on your Oracle VM server to get the latest version of ovs-agent. That has far more sensible error messages instead of the "vm_metrics" thing. Otherwise, check /var/log/ovs-agent/ovs_operation.log or xend.log to see if you can find anything more specific.

Error while adding new OVM in server pool
Hi,
I have to add a new OVM server to the existing server pool.
while doing test connecting at the time of adding server in server pool, it is contacting. however, it is showing error with " check the agent connectivity" while clicking OK.
ovs agent server is running.
can any one assit me on thisHi,
Did the subscriber database used for replication before?
Check the MSDistribution_history table in the distribution database. It contains history rows for the Distribution Agents.
In case you encounter the “One or more subscriptions have been marked inactive. Drop and re-create all subscriptions for this node that are failing with this error.” in the Replication Monitor after restarting the Distribution
Agent.
This means that the Distribution Agent is unable to delivery data due to some errors or the job was stopped and the Agent will go into an infinite retry logic.
The Agent will stay in retry mode until the Distribution Cleanup job removes the “cached” transactions from the Distribution Database. At this point the Distribution Agent will no longer have the data needed to “catch
up” the subscriber. As result, the Subscriber will be marked “inactive” and post the following error in the MSrepl_errors table in the Distribution database.
Subscription Expiration and Deactivation

OVM 3.0.3 - register iSCSI server
Probably a basic thing that I'm overlooking, for which I apologize in advance. Stumped and turning to wider community while I recheck docs. Any ideas appreciated.
A) Problem: Receiving a OVMAPI_B000E when attempting to Refresh Storage Array. The specific message is

OVMAPI_4004E Server Failed Command: storage_plugin_discover oracle.generic.SCSIPlugin.GenericPlugin, Status: socket.gaierror:(-2, 'Name or service not known')
B) Environment:
OVS 3.0.3 fresh install
- hostname caballo5
- host is a Dell Precision P490 dual CPU, quad core w 20GB RAM
- 3 NICs, one on primary subnet (192.168.0), two unassigned
OVM 3.0.3 fresh instal
- hostname gandalfl
- host is a Dell Optiplex 755 w 8GB RAM, 500 GB OS disk,
- Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 6
- also houses Cloud Control 12.1.0
- Production install
OpenFiler 2.99 fresh install
- hostname blackmax
- host is a custom with 4x 1.5TB SATA for storage + 1x 300GB SATA for OS
- iSCSI confiigured with no CHAP for discovery.
I can discover the openfiler iSCSI services from Windows iSCSI initiator as well as from OVM & OVS hosts using iscsiadm. (Added below)
I use FQDN everywhere, but have removed domain in the info.

The same VM template works on another repository. What could be causing this issue ?

The same VM template works on another repository. What could be causing this issue ?

OVM local drives not seen - SAS drive issue
OVM 3.1.1
Dell R510 12 SAS Drives in Raid 5
I'm trying to set up an r510 for a test env, and after reading through the forums, I found that it says SAS drives can't be used.
6.4.3. Local SAS Hard Disks Not Supported for Storage
But that seems crazy. They are in Raid 5. I'm not trying to access them individually. They show up as a Physical Disk, but they don't show up when I create repository.
I've went through this note:
Oracle VM 3.0.3 - Using several local disks
and cleaned up everything. Deleted the 1 partition, ensured multipathing worked, and the storage disk array appears.
Doesn't make since that a RAID 5 volume whether SAS or IDE would viewed differently. The "drive" is presented through the controller. It could be my controller. I've heard others said it works. Some say it works with 3.0.3.
Edited by: ABD - DBA on Oct 19, 2012 10:04 AMOk, I finally go it to show up. When I created the server pool, I didn't notice that it had issues adding the server with local disks. Had a hostname lookup issue. Anyway, I can see the disk now, but have the following error:
Fri Oct 19 14:15:41 EDT 2012] OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: storage_plugin_createFileSystem to server: oravms02 failed. OVMAPI_4004E Server Failed Command: storage_plugin_createFileSystem oracle.ocfs2.OCFS2.OCFS2Plugin 0004fb000005000033f2d7b408ba45eb /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e 0, Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: OSCPlugin.InvalidValueEx:'The backing device /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e is not allowed to contain partitions'
If I run fdisk /dev/sdb and issue print command, there are no partitions displayed.
I look in /dev/mapper and see the following
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 0 Oct 18 16:44 36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 1 Oct 18 16:44 36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792ep1
I used "dmsetup remove /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792ep1"
Now, I can create the repository.

64 bit OEL install hangs at installing dogtail in OVM 2.2
I recently upgraded my server to OVM 2.2 and swapped out the dual core AMDs to quad core AMDs at the same time.
Since then I have been unable to create any 64 bit OEL servers. In every instance the install hangs when Installing dogtail-0.6.1-2.el5.noarch
This used to work at 2.1.5 and I can deploy the existing templates, but they are OEL 5.3.

1) I get the same errors when trying a command line install
2) I can successfully create fully virtualised VMs
So if all else fails I can create fully virtualised VMs and then convert them, which is a bit of a pain but will at least give me working templates.
