PS won't let me save because "Disk not Available"

This is the second time this has happened.  Customer help had me delete a file in the library but I can't remember which file.  Can anyone help me?

If it is the scratch disk full, you may try to delete .tmp / edit/purge/all. Or assign a scratch disk with enough space--if that's what you mean. But if it is disk not available, it's because of the disk permission? On mac, choose the scratch disk you want, press command I-> Sharing &Permission-> Ignore ownership on this volume. (IF that is the boot drive, ignore this suggestion. Don't do it.)

  • Photoshop can't initialize because disk not available

Because of the smaller size of the boot disk of my Mac (40GB) I have to move everything to a larger capacity drive. I have been using a 500GB firewire drive for almost a year for mass storage. I am now have it running as my startup drive, then I will upgrade to OS X 10.5.x on the 500 GB drive. Right now BOTH drives are running 10.4.11. I will keep the older drive on 10.4 until all apps that need upgrading to run on 10.5 have been replaced.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the entire original drive content to the newly initialized large drive. The problem is that Photoshop will NOT start up from the new drive. It will get to the point of measuring memory, then gives an error message of "could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available".
If I click on the Photoshop app on EITHER drive while using the system on the 500GB drive, I get the disk not available message. If I reboot on the original drive, Photoshop WILL run as before. Clicking on the app on the 500 GB drive while running the OS on the small drive still gives the error message.
This problem only is with Photoshop, not InDesign or Illustrator which work normally. Needless to say, having to reboot back and forth is a big pain in the back side and a huge waste of time. There must be an invisible file that requires Photoshop to run on a particular drive with a particular installed OS.
Before I update to CS3, I want to be sure I will be allowed to install on the larger drive and not be forced to install on the drive that the only working version OS Photoshop will run. I have not tried to see if I can run the "new" Photoshop transferred to the 500 GB drive by deleting the original version. I can't afford to run the risk not having any Photoshop at all.
Much to my dismay, you can NOT re-install CS2 for any reason if there is not an older version of Photoshop so it knows you are upgrading. Once you install the one time as an upgrade, you have a set of very expensive coasters!!!! What if a drive dies or an app gets corrupted and you have to re-install? Guess you shell out $1,200 for a new full version. What a rip off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I want to change the way my single computer is laid out, that is my decision, not Adobe's.
    Any suggestions or help???
Related to this problem but not requiring a response as it is a complaint -- I tried to deal with Adobe customer service today and after 30 minutes was told I was being transferred to a supervisor. (Talking to the first person was extremely difficult as they were obviously on a phone bank overseas.) When the phone answered, it asked for a mail box number or wait for assistance. I waited and then a message came on that no one available and hung up on me so I had to call back again. I am NOT happy with Adobe at this point.

I have given up trying to get Photoshop to work on the new external firewire drive, so this thread can die like Photoshop has been doing. Right now, I am not particularly thrilled with Adobe.
I have changed the scratch disk so it could be on any of the four drives, but the app that wouldn't open without the error has to be able to be opened to change its prefs ( catch 22). I also changed the ownership, but that didn't help. The drives are all HSF+.
I have now split apps over two internal 40 GB drives with Adobe and Apple remaining on the boot drive and all other apps aliased from the second drive, giving me a total of 41 GB free space. Data files have been relocated to the 500 GB firewire drive along with iPhoto files and iTunes and all archive and backup info on the 750 GB firewire.
I now think the problem is that Adobe does not allow a user to install a useable Photoshop on an external system drive (since it can work if opened from the internal system drive).
Yes, I know I have an older system, but it works, does the work, and has to do for now. Not everyone can afford the newest and best Mac every year!

  • Could not open PS CS6 because disk not available - new info

Running PS CS6 on a Mac Pro, Mt. Lion 10.8.1, 10 GB RAM, 3.6 Tb on 4 internal drives. A new problem cropped up just today.  Launching PS brings error msg Could not open because a dik was not aviable, and a 2nd msg Could not open a scratch file . . . .  Removing Prefs  file works, but there's a BUT: I can't change some prefs without the problem reoccurring.
I can reproduce the following:  reinstall PS CS6, Change 1 preference, namely make another disk the scratch disk, move it to 1st place.  Problem reappears.  It appears I must leave the boot disk as the primary scratch disk.  All my disks are OK, repaired & permissions verified by Disk Util.
Even if I just clear prefs, verify releaunch is OK, and change this one preference, I get the prob.
FWIW here are the last few lines from the Console log:

The permissions verification (and repair) functions of Disk Utility will not tell you whether a permissions problem is preventing Photoshop from using your non-boot scratch disk. That only checks to see whether directories and files have permissions which match the permissions that they were given at the time of creation or modification by Apple software installer packages.
My primary "scratch disk" is a non-boot volume. Here are the volume's permissions as seen at the bottom of a Finder Get Info window.

  • Could not open PS scratch file or initialize because disk not available.

I have a new MAC and am putting all of the adobe programs on the new machine. When opening PS the dialogue box gives the above error and will not open the program. I did see that I needed to diactivate PS on the old system. I did that and still get the error. Because it will not open the program I do not know what to do at this time.

Hold down Cmd+Alt+Shift while starting the program to reset the prefs and define a new scratch file location.

  • IWork bug won't let me save in new folders

Hi I'd like to know why all my iWork apps won't let me save my files in new locations.
Every time I try to save something it only lets me save my file to the page it automatically shows me (my documents).
When I try to make a new folder within my documents to save my files, it tells me that the folder is a read-only location. See picture here:
When I checked the permissions in the info of my documents, or the subfolder I try to make new folder in, it says that anyone who accesses my computer can read and write. See picture here:
Please let me know how I can resolve this because I find it very hassle at this point to organize my files without this feature. I have already restarted the computer, Repaired and verified disk permissions, updated all the software and nothing seems to be working. The only way I can make new folders is by making one through Finder first, placing it in the right location, and saving my files there.
    Thanks

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Acrobat won't let me save current marked-up pdf even though I saved it halfway through. • FCP 7 won't let me save changes to effect default settings

Hey all - using FCP 7,0,3 and it will let me make a change to an individual effects default settings, but it won't let me save a new default - i.e.; I'm trying to change the length of disolves because I don't want full 1 second transitions, ever.  I can add the transition and change that one, but FCP doesn't remember this preference and makes me do it all over again whenever I use the transition.  My FCP is very buggy!

Are you using the correct method to make a new default transition?
If, for example, you want to make a 10 frame dissolve as your default, 1st place a default dissolve on the timeline:
Then change it to 10 frames duration:
Then click on that dissolve in the timeline to select it, and drag it to the FCP browser:
And let go. Then Control-click on the effect in the browser and from the drop down menu choose "Set Default Transition"
Once you have done that, your 10 frame dissolve will the effect applied when you apply the default transition.

  • Boot Camp won't let me partition because files cannot be moved

Hello, i just purchased Leopard so i could use windows (again) on my mac... after uninstalling it a long time ago back when i had Tiger and bootcamp beta.
anyway, the problem i'm having is the same as a few people: it won't let me partition my disk because some files cannot be moved, and that i need to format the disk to a single partition - Mac OSX (Journaled), even though it already IS.
most suggestions have been to erase and restore, or back up your computer on time machine... but the problem with that is i have a large amount of space being used on my external (for photos, movies, music), which would not otherwise fit on my HD, and as a result there is not enough room on my external to back up with Time Machine.
so what can i do to get Boot Camp Assistant to partition my disk so that i can install windows?

thanks for the advice - i finally managed to get it to work!
after a bunch of research i found out that it is in fact because the disk is fragmented that bootcamp assistant is unable to partition the disk (despite the many false claims that OSX does not need to be defragmented).
i didn't feel like paying for iDefrag and waiting to get it in the mail, so i downloaded the iDefrag demo and was able to see exactly where the fragments were (many of them were surprisingly mp3 files), and then i could manually delete their corresponding files to free up continuous space. (where before i couldn't even make a 5GB partition, i was able to finally make a 15GB partition after deleting about a dozen music files)
for anyone who wishes to try this, the way it works is that in order for the partition to be created, it requires a certain amount of free, CONTINUOUS space. Your computer says there is a certain amount of free space on it, but not all of it is continuous, in other words there are bits and pieces of stuff (fragments) littered throughout areas of "free" space.
When you run the iDefrag demo, there is a bar at the bottom with lots of colors which represents all the stuff on your HD. The free space refers to any area of white, and fragmented files are in red. The info bar will tell you exactly what file is being represented by the area of color when you click on it.
The idea is to find large areas of free space (white). If there are a few bands of non-red color in those areas it's OK, but you want to locate all the fragmented files (red) in those areas, find out what they are, search them in the finder and delete them (the info bar will tell you the file name, which will very likely be an mp3, as well as it's exact location on your computer). But be careful because if you don't know what you're deleting, you may screw up your computer.
If you buy iDefrag ($35.00), you can simply defragment and optimize your computer. This will take a long time (~5 hours), but you dont have to do any manual labor, and in the end your computer will be beautifully defragmented: all the free space will be clumped together in one big section of your hard drive and it will be completely continuous, so you can make a much larger partition (depending how much free space you have to begin with).

  • PLease help: pages won't let me save a document

My problem: I type a text, hit 'save as' , name the file and trouble starts:
A window pops up saying it is a locked document or file in use. Of course after
checking it, none of it is the case, well, theoretical yeah the file is in use as I want to save it (!!!)
Does anybody know if SL has an issue with the application of pages ?
I thought there would only be an issue with apple works in that respect.
I'm not a computer person but appreciate any help with this. I tried to save anything but it won't let me save a document at all...the same window pops up.

It might be better to post over at the Pages forum.
