PS2 & Canon 40D

When I open a RAW file from the 40D in PS2 I get an error message - 'could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of file'.
I've been processing 30D files (CR2 format) in PS2 for 2 years without a problem. The 40D RAW file is also CR2 format, the same as my 30D.
I'm not sure if it's a camera setting or a PS2 issue. Any help would be appreciated.

And to expand a bit on that, CS2 cant be upgraded to read 40D raw files.
You have 2 ways to go, upgrade to CS3 or get the latest version of the DNG
converter from Adobe (free) and convert you RAW files to DNG format and CS2
will then edit them. And your original RAW files are not changed in any way
doing that.
Hope this helps

Hi all help needed I have a canon 40D. I am thinking of buying a canon 6D.
But not sure that my lenses will work.
    I have a 170mm/ 500mm APO Sigma.
A 10/20 ex  Sigma   HSM  IF.
And a 180 APO Sigma Macro or do I have to scrap them and buy others.
ALL Help will be greatly received. Yours  BRODIE

In short, I love it. I was going to buy the 5DMark III. After playing with it for a while at my local Fry's store where they put 5DMII, 5DMIII and 6D next to each other, using the same 24-105L lens, I decided to get the 6D and pocket the different for lens later.
I'm upgrading from the 30D. So I think you'll love it. It's a great camera. I have used 5DMII extensively before (borrowing from a close friend).
Funny thing is at first I don't really care about the GPS and Wifi much. I thought they're just marketing-gimmick. But once you have it, it is actually really fun and helpful. For example, I can place the 6D on a long "monopod", then use the app on the phone to control the camera to get some unique perspective on some scenes. It's fun and great. GPS is also nice for travel guy like me.

  • Cannot open SRaw files from my Canon 40D can open Large Raw files

    Hello,
I use Windows XP. I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. I use Canon 40D. I have run updates in Photoshop and all is updated (I have ACR 4.2). Camera raw only appears once when I look at About Plug-In. I am not able to open the small raw files, but I am able to open the large ones with Camera Raw in Photoshop.
Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone help?
    Thanks! Linda

    Jeff,
I also put a level of responsibility on Canon
"Please be sure to place _ALL_ of the responsibility on Canon...it's THIER firmware. "
FWIW, I did lace into Canon Tech support today about two major pieces, first the lack of any information regarding the update. Spoke to a supervisor. He claimed that being only out there a week was not enough time for them to get informed. I reminded him that he should probably add another week to that allowing build time to get the cameras loaded with the new FW and out to distributors, and that 2 weeks was more than enough time for them to hear something. With regard to the "responsibility of the RAW software company to be code to new cameras" I reminded him Adobe already had and it was working fine with the 40D and that their "point release" which no one seems to be able to find (except on the cameras) broke what was working. The Saga sadly continues...

  • Just bought Canon 40d - Use CS2 - Cannot read Raw files in Bridge

Heading says it all really. Just purchased new Canon 40D Body and have been using CS2 on Mac OS 10.4 for over two years. Cannot read RAW files in Photoshop Bridge which is what I have used consistently with 20D files up to now. Quick search on Google brought up fact that Adobe had not up upgraded Bridge to read new 40D files but that was 2 years ago. Am now looking for plug-in! Can anyone help or am I now forced to upgrade my CS2 or move away to Aperture or Lightroom? Any help gratefully received. Rob

The 40d is not supported by any version of Camera Raw that can run in CS2.  You need at least CS3 and ACR 4.2 or greater.
Dowload the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 5.3 and convert the raw files from your 40d to raw DNGs first, then you can open the DNG files in ACR 3.7 hosted by CS2.

  • What is the BEST way to get my macbook with lion on it, to communicate with my Canon 40D camera?

What is the BEST way to get my macbook with lion on it, to communicate with my Canon 40D camera? It says the utility disk is a PowerPC app and that is no longer supported. What do I do now? I can't upload photos from my camera.

Also, I had the same problem happen when I tried to install an older version of Corel Painter. Are Macbook Pro users just NOT supposed to be able to use their laptops for the purposes they are best designed for?

  • RAW import from Canon 40D to Elements 4.0

I have a Canon 40D camera, and still use PE 4.0. I am unable to import my raw files - help! I have downloaded and installed the camera raw 3.7 plug-in. What am I missing? Any advice welcome. Many thanks...

If no-one else comes up with an answer have a look at my thread under the RAW Issues forum
    m. It may or may not be of help. It's entitled "Opening Raw Files saved as DNG"
The title might not seem to relate to your question but I think you may be suffering from the same problem I had . If not I'm sure some kind soul will come to your aid.
If nothing else it may pay you to post your thread under the Raw Issues forum rather than let it get lost where it is.
    Good luck, James

  • Camera Raw 4.4.1 still unable to preview Canon 40D CR2 files

Even after installing Camera Raw 4.4.1 plugin update as per installation instructions and purging central Cache...I am still unable to preview Canon 40D Raw (CR2) or Digital Negative (DNG) files on CS3 Bridge or Photoshop.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Jeff..thanks for your helpful feedback. OS used is Vista. After recieving your suggestion I confirmed that I saved the plug-in to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats - and then rebooted the system. This seemed to resolve the problem and i can now preview raw file.
    Jeff, thanks again. Cheers, Doug

  • Aperture and Canon 40D RAW

When will Aperture support RAW from my Canon 40D?
In the meantime how should I handle my RAW images? Can I import them into Aperture now with metadata attached and when the support is there all my photos and metadata will appear?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first question has been asked many times in the last 4 weeks and there's no answer. Ask more and Apple will lock this thread.
Second question. If you shoot RAW only, Aperture will import the file, and you won't be able to see it or work with it. You can export it to use Canon's DPP, Photoshop or other available converter to process it, save it to TIFF or JPEG, and then reimport to Aperture for now.
If you shoot RAW and JPEG, Aperture will import both files, but it's not apparent where the JPG file is. Control-click or right-click the grey square thumbnail or the reddish main window, and click "New Version from Master JPEG" to reveal the full-resolution JPEG image the camera took.
When OSX starts supporting 40D in the future, those RAW files will automatically be shown inside Aperture.

  • No preview for Canon 40D Raws?

    Hi,
I got a problem with my new Canon 40D. Everything works fine, Lightroom supports the Camera Raw but there are no previews shown in the import dialog.
Sometimes i got pictures on the camera from different locations or shootings and seeing which pictures to import where would be helpful.
If i shoot jpegs they are shown, but i really don't need them and they do only waste the space on my memory card...
Is it a known problem? Will it be resolved in the next version? Or can i do anything to make it work?
By the way, i tried to install Microsofts RAW Image viewer to get previews in the explorer but here i got the same problem - it seems not to be able to read ma Raws.

    Hello and thank you
first to ElliR - i tried dbmagic and it shows the previews in windows explorer - thank you very much. Unfortunately it does not support filmstrip view. Do you know if the next bigger version (plus) does this?
Back to my origninal question: it is definitly a thing between the camera and windows!
I'm shooting "full size" RAWs and when i connect the camera to my PC, i do not have previews in Lightroom or in windows explorer (even with the above dbmagic installed).
When i put the memory card (extreme III 4 GB) into a card reader connected to the PC both are working: i see previews in Lightroom as well as in windows explorer (i didn't try that earlier).
So it seems to be windows/microsoft to be the "guilty" - does it make any sense to report this behaviour to microsoft or anywhere else?
For my personal workflow i would prefer not always to fumble the card out of the camera, search my card reader and so on.

    Drop-shadows
Drop-shadows under images both in Loupe and Grid view on Windows (only on Mac before). Though, in Loupe mode, they are somewhat buggy (they don't show until you zoom in and out) and jerky (as you move through the images, there's a visible lag between drawing the picture and it's shadow).
    Responsiveness in Develop
Also, I was surprised (and what a nice surprise that is) to see that the changes applied in Develop module are now applied almost real-time! If you look carefully in 1:1, you can see that the changes are first reflected by a lower quality proxy images, then, in a fraction of a second, re-rendered on the actual image. At least on my machine it was much slower before.

  • Cannot recognize Canon 40D RAW file

My Photoshop CS3 Extended cannot recognize the raw files generated in my Canon 40D, however this camera is on the list of recognized cameras. This camera generates files with extension .cr2. I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3 and the DNG Converter 4.3.1, but still no luck. I am working on a Mac, if that makes any difference. Any suggestions on what else I can try?
    Thanks.

    >I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3
Did you also download, decompress and correctly install the ACR 4.3.1 plug-in, replacing the old one in the same location? Are you sure you downloaded and install the Mac version of said plug-in and not the Windoze version?
When you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in , does ACR 4.3.1 show up there and only once?
Did you purge the Cache for each folder through the Tools menu in Bridge after that?
All of that has to be done precisely according to the very detailed instructions.

  • Canon 40D RAW (CR2) Files import

I've Photoshop and Aperture. Cannot install Elements which would be my preference - so help needed here.
Also - I use iPhoto mostly in the latest Apple OS, yet I cannot import Canon 40D RAW files. I get an error message saying they could not be imported - import failed.
    Help please.
    Freshacre

    Freshacre:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What version of PS Elements are you trying to install? I've installed the PSE 6 demo without any problem.
What type of files are you trying to import and from where?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Canon 40D RAW Files and Leopard???

    Hi all,
Haven't actually bought Leopard yet (have to wait till pay day!!) but have a pretty serious question to ask.
Has anyone tried opening the RAW files from a Canon 40D on Leopard?? Just I know that in 10.4.10 they are simply unsupported. Just in case no-one has access to a 40D at the moment, here is a link to a 40D RAW file (zipped). If someone would be so kind as to try it out and post back, I would really appreciate it!! It's killing me having to use JPG in Aperture!!!

Yes, 40D raw files are now able to be opened by Preview.
I just upraded to Leopard, and in addition to confirming that 40D files are now recognized by Preview, iPhoto'08 and Aperture, I noticed another interesting new feature.
    - in Leopard, you don't even need to open Preview or any other app to view RAW files.
the new Quick Look feature in the Finder views all sorts of files right from the Finder, including 40D RAW files.
Just tap the spacebar with any image file (or files) selected in the Finder, and up pops the Quick Look window. works for RAW or JPEG. you can switch to full screen view too. if you have more than 1 file selected you can view index sheet or slideshow, like the old right-click feature in Tiger. works in any Finder view - icon, list, browser and Cover Flow too. looks very handy.
p.s. the Finder Get Info in Leopard now correctly displays EXIF data, including proper shutter speed and aperture (Tiger did not display aperture, and shutter speed was awkwardly displayed in decimal, not a common fraction)

  • When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files?

When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files? I have a new camera and would love to use the raw files in iphoto. No luck so far. Aperature seems to lack the abilty to open them also. Anyone here as to when iphoto will be updated?

    Hi again.
No, I don't use aperture, I tried the demo and liked it, but I'd previously bought the commercial version of Pixmantec RawShooter converter for my 10D - Pixmantec were 'bought out' by Adobe, and Adobe generously offered all RawShooter purchasers a free licence for Lightroom, which I also like a lot (though haven't fully got to grips with), so can't currently justify Aperture too.
The one thing I'd say about Aperture is that the colour management for some reason just nailed the colours when printing using canned profiles, in a way other apps hadn't on Windows (including QImage). I was particularly impressed by this using an old Epson 1290S A3+ printer which always tended to produce prints with a colour cast.
iPhoto seems to handle RAW conversions very well and simply, although it's not as refined as the high end apps. This together with organising features are probably what make you find it so easy. Remember though that when you display/tweak RAW files, iPhoto will be creating a file to store these changes as the RAWs do not get directly manipulated. As all this is done behind the scenes again this probably makes it seem easy.
If you don't have Aperture or Lightroom, both were available for 30 day demo last time I checked.

  • Accurate colour profile for Canon 40D?

    Hi all,
I have an Canon 40D but unfortunately my colour checker is not compatible with the new DNG Profile Editor (it's a PerfectPix Natural).
Has anyone here made a profile for the 40D using the Gretag colour checker that they'd be happy to share with me? I realise that your 40D may not replicate colours in exactly the same way as my camera, however it's got to be closer than any of my other profile options at the moment.
    Thanks in advance,
    James
PS... I hope this request isn't inappopriate, the user to user forum for Camera Raw seemed like the best place.

    Hi David/Eric,
I understand what you mean about the contrast, however I am comfortable that my images are exposed correctly on the whole. I guess it's just very hard to quantify, and very hard to prove, where my images are not "right" colour wise.
I also realise that white balance plays a major role in this type of subjective comparison... The issue I'm finding is that when I am flicking between profiles for an image there are times I just can't find anything that's right.
Maybe the biggest issue, at least in part, is perception. When analyzing an example image I've seen the following behaviour for each profile:
    - Camera Standard is probably best, but while on this example it's okay, in some images it's over-saturated.
    - Adobe Standard is close, probably slightly too green.
    - ACR 4.4 is up there too, best in some cases but can have issues with skin tones.
    - Camera Faithful is next on the list but tends to look flat and lifeless (even though no change other than profile).
    - Camera Portrait makes faces too pink and skies too blue. In general it seems to over-saturate.
    - Camera Landscape makes faces look pretty good, but skies and landscapes are WAY over saturated.
    - Camera Neutral looks relatively good colour wise but has no contrast and looks under saturated.
The problem is, in this one example they've behaved in a certain way. In another example (even one where I've manually white balanced) they'll behave differently... suddenly Camera Standard will look terrible and ACR4.4 will look the best... or Adobe Standard.
I guess the issue is I'm just not confident that LR is reproducing the colours that the camera saw... but only because I don't think the profile is right. Once I know that the profile is right (and whether I'm being silly or not, I would be satisfied that Joe Blog's 40D is going to be almost identical to my 40D) then I'll know that the faces look a little red because I've got my white balance wrong. Right now there are three that are "close" to what I saw, but I'm not confident that any of them are spot on.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not attempting to be difficult, to be honest I figured that the creation of the Profile Editor would lead to a proliferation of downloadable camera profiles that were supposedly "colourmetrically accurate" for each camera... maybe I'm just a little quick on the bandwagon.
    Cheers,
    James
PS. I realise that colour gamut of the monitor plays into this also, but I am assuming that if I can SEE that the colours are too saturated then I'm not exceeding the gamut... I guess it's possible that my "washed out" profile Camera Faithful is exceeding the gamut and subsequently doesn't look very good?
