  • HP Pavilion g7-2270us: The disc tray won't open when I press the button!

Hi everyone! I've had my laptop for a day or two now, and I love it! Today, though, I wanted to burn a disc, and realized that when I push the button on the disc tray to open it, it won't open.
It still opens, though; I can go to Computer> Right Click the disc driver> Eject, and the tray opens just fine. Is the button defective?
I mean, it's not all that bad, and if that's the only problem, I can deal with it. It's not going to get worse, is it? Should I concern myself with replacing it?
    Thank you in advance!
Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong section...

    Hi,
It does sound like a mechanical defect with the optical drive release mechanism.  While this may well not cause any other issues, seeing as this is a brand new machine, my best advice would be to simply return the notebook to the retailer it was purchased from and get a replacement.
    Best regards,

  • Disc drive won't open after update...

Just noticed my disc drive won't open using the eject key...I can open tray with toast and disc will mount and eject it.. but eject key won't work...have repaired permissions after the updates... one was for bluetooth which I don't have installed..other was security...
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated..

What system do you have? From what I read it looks as if you haven't yet installed 10.4.3.
Try (re-)installing 10.4.3 using the combined upgrade.
Oops... I just saw you indcated you are running 10.3.7. Any reason you did not upgrade to 10.3.9? My advice to reinstall the combined update to the latest system still holds
Before that, just to be safe (one never knows) don't forget to backup!

  • Help! Disc drive won't open

I have a Satellite P75-A7200 that is less than two years old.  My disc drive stopped working for no apparent reason.  I tried pushing into the little hole to the right of the button, but it won't open.  Can someone please help?  Do I need some kind of driver update?  Or is it just a physical problem? Thank you!

The paperclip or what ever you are putting in the hole to open the drive has to go in far enough to release the drive, mine goes in around 3/4 of an inch you should feel the door release, then it should open.

  • CD-Rom Tray won't open

I Just purchased a Used G3 B/W 300mhz Rev 2 off Ebay. The system came with a Zip and Cdrom drive and 6Gb Harddrive that was formatted with no OS installed. When i power the System on and attempt to open the cdrom tray it wont open, so i figured maybe the drive was damaged. I then attempted to use my old cdrom from my PC and got the same result, However i noticed when i just plug in the Power Ac in the back of the drive it will open and close on both of them. It just stops workin when i plug in the IDE cable
Any thoughts?? this is my 1st Mac so have no idea what's wrong
    G3 Blue White   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

It's not unheard of for the cable to go bad. It often (but not always) will show some hint, such as a crack in the insulation at one end of one of the cable as it enters a connector. It may also have a bent or busted pin. (Some Hard Drives have a missing center pin as a feeble attempt at polarization.)
The CD cable is a 40-wire cable on 40-pin headers, so it is fairly common and easy to get right. They are not too expensive if you shop carefully. Try not to go much longer than the original cable, as data errors may become more frequent at longer lengths. 18 inches is the nominal maximum length.
Be careful with which-way-up with replacement cables, as many are NOT polarized the way your original Mac cables are. Nothing will work right if the cable gets flipped over and plugged in upside down.

  • CD tray won't open via keyboard

I recently moved one workstation. The CD/DVD drive tray had been opening fine by using the "open/close" key on the keyboard, now it does not respond, even though it will open (eject) through TOAST. Reads and writes OK.
Have replaced the keyboard… no go!
    Any ideas?

Have replaced PRAM battery and the F12 key doesn't respond either.
Note: I have discovered a problem with leftover files from a third party keyboard (Adesso) Multimedia thing.
Forgot it was once on this station.
kbdwatcher.crash.log and associated files are eating up the system.
    Thanks

  • CD tray won't open after intalling 10.4.9 update

Can't get the CD tray to open after installing 10.4.9. Tried command E also. Currently nothing in the tray. Any way to get it open manually? Any other ideas? Worked fine before this latest update of the OS.

Are you aware that there is a 1.5-2 second delay on the Eject key in 10.4.9? You have to hold the key until the eject symbol appears on screen.

The confusion (sorry) is from Toshiba not me or you! Here is the description from the Help file:A copy of your computers applications and drivers are stored on the hard drive. You can create an application disc by using the TOSHIBA Application Disc Creator.
The other one is a disc burning utility for files. I would like to back up drivers and applications without imaging.

  • Disk tray won't open, with or without a disk in

    Hi All,
I believe this is happening since I upgraded Leopard 10.5.5. Basically whenever I have to open the disk tray regardless of the disk status (with a cd/dvd in, without, when the disk is reading or when it's not), I first try with the eject key on the keyboard, but I have to keep it pressed for a lot of time before (not always) the tray opens. Most of the time the key is just unresponsive. Same thing if I try to drag the disk icon to the trash, or try any other methods. Only thing working to far is opening the terminal and using drutil tray eject.
    Any clues?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
It sounds like the key is bad. Leopard did introduce a short delay (actually I think it came in a Tiger update which Leopard continued) so that an accidental tap would not start the eject cycle when someone overshot the delete key, as far as I can figure it out.
    You might try this:
    Go to the following directory:
    System->Library->Core Services->Menu Extras
    and double click eject.menu
This will put a small eject button in the top right menu
If this works all the time when ejecting a disk, then I would strongly suspect the keyboard.
You might reset PRAM, but I don't think that would help for a single key.

  • Optical disk trays won't open

    Greetings!
I have a problem with my internal DVD drive's trays: they are stuck. When I press the “Eject” button (or “Option-Eject” for the second tray), I hear the drive trying to open the tray (the motor is forcing to push) and it stops around 10 seconds later (the usual abort when it can't open). Both drives are stuck.
Last month, I've opened my Mac Pro and took out the drives. I've unscrewed them and managed to find the issue (using an IDE kit, I powered one of them and tried to see where the problem lied). I was unsure I found the problem, but it worked. However, one week later, one was stuck again, and again two days later, the other too.
So, I want a definitive fix. I can't manage to open my computer each week to make my drives working only for one week and repeat this. I'm wondering if someone has or had the same issue?

I realize this is an old post but it is the closest I have found discussing the Mac Pro optical drive problem. There are other posts about iMacs and software problems, but this deals with the MP mechanical problem. I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with the original SuperDrive and a SuperDrive from my old G3. Both work fine if I get a disk in them. I went through the whole routine. Three or four tries with the eject key used to work then nothing. Drive doors not working? Something broken inside? No. THE SOLUTION - The little rubber belt on the plastic pulleys that you can see if the tray is out needs to be cleaned/rejuvenated. However you get to it, clean it with some pure alcohol or other such solvent. I used automotive belt dressing. I pulled the drives out and opened the cases. Not too hard to do. I tried a little petroleum jelly on the rails of one and some spray wax on the other. This can be done without opening the case. I'm not sure if any lubrication was really needed. THE PROBLEM - There is a metal and plastic disk built into the top case of the drive centered over the spindle. With the tray closed, the spindle and drive mechanism are up in the "play position. Without a disk inserted, the MAGNET built into the top of the spindle makes direct contact with the disk in the top case. The rubber belt looses grip over time and can't break the magnetic bond anymore. It needs to be rejuvenated (or replaced if you can find one). The drive has to drop the spindle to allow a disk to be inserted. When you try to open the drive, it senses the mechanism is stuck and it gives up. When a DVD is inserted, the spindle is up and it pulls the metal disk in the top case down on top of the DVD to hold it in place. The top metal disk spins along with the DVD. I haven't tried a band-aid fix of always leaving a disk in the drive since my drives are working fine after cleaning the belt. Having a disk always in the drive may allow enough space to weaken the bond between the magnet and the top metal disk and allow the mechanism to do its job. Hitting the enclosure with clenched fists was probably enough to break the magnetic bond but I hope the rest of the computer survived. As for replacing drives, as recommended elsewhere for this problem, I think you need to get one that is Apple compatable. Otherwise you cannot boot from it. I hope this helps at least one person. It drove me crazy for a long time pressing the eject key multiple times to get the tray to open until that finally stopped and I had to do something.

  • DVD tray won't open on Satellite C650

    Hi
I'm sorry if this ques has been posted before, but I am having trouble getting my DVD tray to open without having to stick something in the small gap. When i try and open it normally, a little light next to the button just starts blinking orange.
    How do I solve this?
    Thank you

    Hi
The CD/DVD eject button is NOT controller by any software!
Pressing the button is an mechanical process!
So if the eject button does not work and if you are not able to eject the CD or DVD using this button, then I would assume that this is an ODD issue and if your notebook is covered by warranty, I would recommend asking the ASP technician for an ODD check.
In all probability the CD/DVD drive needs to be replaced.

  • Won't boot OSX, how to open disc tray to put in repair or install disc?

My iBook G3 600 won't boot to the desktop, it hangs on the startup/spinning wheel. Can someone suggest a variety of good common sense solutions?
Also, how does one open the disc tray (to put in the original install and/or repair disc) if the tray won't open by pressing F12 during the failed startup?

    Hi Ronda.
Thanks for the target mode article. An earlier attempt to run the iBook G3/10.4 as a target disc resulted in the MacBook Pro not being able to recognize/see the G3's drive, which seems to confirm my suspicion that there is major corruption or disc failure on the iBook.
My needs now seem to center around data recovery (if possible) and then attempting to replace the iBook HD.
As regards data recovery/disc repair, have you used or had success with TechTool Pro 4? I have TechTool Deluxe as part of my MacBook AppleCare program and may decide to upgrade to the Pro version, if merited. The app should work with my G3, which runs OS 10.4 (but not 10.5).
Also, have you attempted a HD replacement on a G3? iFixit.com offers detailed instructions. While it seems do-able for a layperson like myself, it does involve a near complete disassembly of the case, shield, housing, etc.
Finally, and apropos of nothing, have you attempted to put 10.5 on your G3? My understanding is that 10.5 exceeds the G3 specs.

  • Dvd disc tray wont open with the side button, will only open when I click eject

I have a new HP g7-2270us laptop.  The dvd disc tray will only open if I do it internally with the eject dvd file.  Is the dvd drive bead or is there a simple fix to make the button on the disc drive open it up????????

    Hi,
My best advice, if you're still within the time frame allowed, would be to return the machine to the retailer you purchased it from and get a replacement machine.
If you're outside of the time this is possible, you contact HP and arrange to have the notebook repaired under warranty.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

  • G3 iBook white: CD drive won't open, emits beep

When I push F12 on my g3 white iBook the computer beeps and the drive won't open on its own.
I have to use an opened paper clip to pop the tray open.
Likewise the tray won't open when I click apple/E on a Cd's icon.
Is there a firmware fix for this?
The computer is three years old. Logic board has been replaced twice under the logic board program.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried dragging the CD's icon to the trash? Does that give the same result?
When there are operating anomalies, one of the first troubleshooting steps is to reset the PMU. You may want to try that, but I fear it may be a hardware problem with your optical drive.

  • Disc tray door won't open or close

    Hello everyone,
Maybe someone can help me out. I just purchased a new iMac so I am getting ready to sell my old and faithful iMac flat panel (at least it was faithful until now). In preparation for the sale I reloaded the original software that came with the computer and I chose to NOT archive (so that it would delete all of the old data). Everything seems fine and all of the programs are working but now for some reason the disc tray door will not open or close when I press the "eject media" button on the keyboard.
I researched as much as I could about the disc tray and I know that if I restart the computer with the mouse button held the tray door will open - which it does. But then it won't close unless I give it a little push manually. And once it is closed, it won't open again without another restart/mouse trick. I tried repairing permissions and restarting, but this didn't seem to help at all.
    Any thoughts?
    Lincoln
PS: The original OS that I installed was 10.2. But I also have 10.3, 10.4, and 10.6. Do you think if I loaded one of these more recent operating systems that the "eject media" would start working again?

    Hi Barry,
Well, the knowledge base articles didn't help. But then I checked to see if there were any "software updates" and realized that there was a "10.2 combo update" plus a bunch of other updates, so I downloaded everything and when I restarted the computer -- everything works again!!
My computer is back to its old reliable self again, so I guess I can try to sell it on eBay now.
    Thanks for all your help,
    Lincoln
PS: Anyone want to buy a nice little iMac Flat Panel?
