PS6 Video using NVIDIA GTX 680 card in 2009 Mac Pro OS 10.9.4- slow.

Hi,
I just put a GTX 680 in my juiced up Mac Pro, replacing the original NVDIA 120... and the speeds in PS6 doing video seem to be exactly the same as before..... What are the settings I should have in preferences? Do I need a driver or anything? Looking in the graphics card part of PS6 prefs, it seems to be registering the 680..... and everything works... but I see no difference in any speed.
Any advice?

If I turn "use Graphics processor" to "off"... it seems to make no difference to the video speeds- playback, export...
Have I just wasted $700 on the GTX 680?
I'm running Photoshop CS6 Extended.... does this mean the videon editing does NOT use the GPU?

When you enable Internet Sharing in OS X, you are creating a separate sub-net.
There is no option to allow this to be a simple pass-through from Ethernet to AirPort (or the other way).
The problem is easily solved by getting an inexpensive wireless router. You can replace your current router OR disable the DHCP server on the wireless router and allow the wireless clients to get an IP address from the current router.

If I recall correctly, the only system difference between
the two scores was 24GB RAM @#1 instead of 12GB @#17.
It came as something of a surprise that doubling the RAM
was able to knock down MPEG-2 encoding by more than 50%.
I also seem to recall that once this fact was known... most everyone
doubled their RAM within a couple of weeks resulting in my stay
at the top of the list being pretty brief!

RAID card in 2009 Mac Pro & EMC Retrospect 8.x: Experience

I spent the last few days in the often bizarre world of trying to figure the best way to utilize the 2009 RAID card with the newly released version 8 Retrospect from EMC (Iomega). Here's my warning: From my experience version 8 and the RAID card do not get along at all and often result in that dreaded black screen stating that you have to press the power button and restart in multiple languages, meaning the computer has crashed really badly.
But let me start from the beginning:
we recently got 2 new Western Dig RE4GP 2TB drives which were installed in slot 2 and 4 and then RAIDed together (RAID 0 I think). I then tried to backup 700GB from a Seagate ES2 drive to the new RAID volume using Retro8. After a few minutes I got the black multilanguage crash sign, forcing a manual power off. Not good. A few more similar bad experiences and I gave up on version 8 and went back to version 6.1x. This version seemed to work much better and I was able to backup the 700GB data to the RAID volume. The next test was restoring the 700GB data on the RAID volume. So I wanted to restore the data to the same RAID volume, so the computer would be reading the Retrospect dataset and then writing the data back to the same drive. Maybe not optimal in drive throughput performance but surely technical feasible (yes, ideally you would backup the data to one/another drive and then restore the data to a third target drive, in my case the RAID volume). Turns out this too is a no go. After restoring 300GB the dreaded multilanguage sign appears and again, after inspecting the error logs, it seems the RAID card has just freaked out. At this point I am getting very mad at Apple as I can hardly find any really usable information on the RAID card anywhere on the web plus making a $6k computer perform in a rather delicate way which is not the usual way I experience Macs. Questions in my mind: Do the drives need to be in adjacent slots, is there a problem with the 2 TB drives, why can't the card read and restore to the same RAID volume, why does the RAID card crash the system so badly, isthe computer being damaged by crashing like this etc. I am getting the impression that this expensive RAID card's performance is kind of flaky and there might be some software issues. Also I have a suspicion (I have no way of proving it) that the RAID card might be using more PCI bandwidth than it should thus causing other problems I won't get into here. So after this rant my questions would be:
-anybody else had any success with Retrospect 8 and the RAID card?
-might my crashes not really stem from the RAID card but from some other thing I am doing?
-any pointers on things I might be missing?
There just seems to be so little user feedback on the RAID card here or elsewhere which I think might be because relatively few people have the RAID card.
Any advice would be great.

You realize that not all disk drives are certified to work with Apple's
RAID card?
Is the ES2 also controlled by the RAID card?
Those RE4s are very very new. Does Apple or WD list them as certified to work on that card? you know, the way they often use to in the case of SCSI controllers and disk drives.

Two HighPoint RocketRAID 4322 Cards in 2009 Mac Pro

I'd like to attach 16 VelociRaptor 2.5" drives in two 8-drive array configurations to my Mac Pro. I'm considering two of the following compact tower enclosures as I'm trying to minimize footprint:

Each enclosure only contains 8 drives. Two primary SFF-8088 mini-SAS cable connections are supported on the enclosure, one cable per 4 drives. The enclosure doesn't have a built-in SAS expander to support additional drives.
Will two 4322 cards in a single Mac Pro work?
Any suggestions on a better solution. I'm processing very large files and need the spindle count to maximize throughput (MB/s).

Unfortunately, it is very possible that this configuration will NOT work. The VelociRaptor is an odd size and may not fit the backplane properly in this enclosure. In addition, the AIC enclosure uses an external power adapter that will take up more room and typically be less reliable than an enclosure with an internal power adapter.
The other issue is that while you may be able to get two RR 4322 cards to work (not tested) they certainly will NOT work together as a single RAID set. The two cards will only work individually. It would be nice if the two cards could be bridged but that feature is not available for RR4322 Mac users.
With all of these possible problems you may be better off going with a tested solution like the RR4322 with the Enhance RS16 JS SAS expander enclosure.

Apple RAID Card error in Mac Pro Tower

Hi, not sure where to post this, but we're getting an error using the Apple RAID card in a Mac Pro Intel Tower. It is "Controller reports RAID system 72-hour battery reserve unavailable - System is configured to run without battery."
Also the status: "Write caches disabled"
System seems to run OK. Is there a way to correct this and have the errors not appear?

I haven't bought it yet because i'm waiting for Apple to upgrade their current graphics cards that are available in the current line up.
The ATI Radeon HD 5770 or the ATI Radeon HD 5870. Altough they are very good graphic cards, I feel that they are very outdated.
Would there be any chance of Apple upgrading their current line up to Nvidia GTX 680?

680 is supported on windows, i dont recall if its in the 11.02 update on mac but if not then you can add to the supported cards txt file.

Adobe's site not showing Nvidia GTX 680 as officially supported

is not even a hint of the Nvidia GTX 680 being a supported card.

Mac OSX version 10.6.8
Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?

Best brand of nVidia GTX 285 card?

Now that I've changed my mind, and decided to get ready to someday buy an HD camcorder, I'm looking at the various brands of nVidia GTX 285 cards to use with CS5... with prices ranging from $370 to $450
The top brands seem to be EVGA $390-$430 and BFG $370-$400 and XFX $390-$450 and GIGABYTE $370 @Newegg
Is one of these brands better than the others?
Note that I do NOT believe in over-clocking, so I am ONLY going to consider a brand + model that uses the standard clock speed as specified on the nVidia web site

look at GHz and memory speeds some sell factory OCed
also warranty. some have lifetime, if i recall BFG, XFX and EVGA?
i prefer Zotac as they tend to be faster for less.

All features but one already work with these cards. The one exception is the GPU acceleration oft he ray-traced 3D renderer, which is an obsolete feature that is being phased out.

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.

Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.

4x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT cards in a Mac Pro run below max supported speed

Hi,
We have 4 "identical" NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB cards in one Mac Pro (to support 8 DVI monitors for a Network Operations Center). One card came with the system, the other cards were purchased from Apple at the same time. This was a refurbished computer, so we didn't have the build-to-order option. I put identical in quotes because they seem to have different ROM revisions.
The system mainly shows graphs on webpages and HP OpenView (via X11), so no heavy-duty gaming or refreshes.
We have been running with 6 monitors for the past 4 months with the following monitors:
- 1x 42" LCD with 1280x768, 32 bit color, DVI
- 5x 22" LCD with 1680x1050, 60Hz, 32 bit color, DVI
When I restart the system, at least one of the 22" monitors takes 5 or 10 minutes of flashing on then off (mostly off) before it finally syncs up and shows a constant image. The 42" LCD won't go to its native resolution (can't recall what that is right now), so have to go down to a less optional 1280x768. In the next day or so, I'll be connecting one more identical 22" LCD and then soon after another 42" monitor, but am wondering if they will work. Yesterday, I saw a post about firmware update for this video card (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/geforce7300gtfirmwareupdate.html). I also noticed that two of the cards have ROM Revision 3008 and two have 3011 ROM Revision of the cards (in System Profiler). I'm not sure yet if this firmware update increases the ROM Revision.
Running the Expansion Slot Utility (/System/Library/CoreServices/) shows that my PCI Express profile is set to Two x8 Lane + Two x4 Lane slots. All slots say that they are running below maximum speed.
The store.apple.com site still shows this configuration as a valid build-to-order, but I wonder if they do something different or extra.
Does anyone else have experience with 4 of these video cards with this many monitors?
Any experience with the Firmware Upgrade that I should know about?

No, the system is upright, but the cards are horizontally seated. Pardon my ascii art, but here's the layout if I look from the back of the Mac Pro:
| DVI DVI ---->> slot 4
| DVI DVI ---->> slot 3
| DVI DVI ---->> slot 2
| DVI DVI ---->> slot 1
So, there are two DVI ports on each card (which is in a slot). I'm not sure which lane is which.
Either the left (as pictured) is lane 1, or the right (as pictured) is lane 2.
i ask because i'm wondering if your reproducing the way the expansion slot utility is graphically portraying it. I'm pretty sure the utility is showing the slots as if the mac is upright and the person is looking into the side of it with the access panel off.

if you say that you have two x4 lanes and two x8 lanes, then i'm deducing that your flasher is on an x4 lane, and as it is, one of your x8 lanes has only one lonely monitor on it.

In my utility window, it is the fourth configuration, so you would have at the moment;
slot4__x4__22" and 22"
slot3__x4__42" and 22" flasher
slot2__x8__22" and empty
slot1__x8__22" and 22"
I think that you have 2 and 3 reversed.
i would suggest trying the third configuration thusly;
slot4__x8__22" and 22"
slot3__x1__22" and empty
slot2__x8__42" and 22" flasher
slot1__x8__22" and 22"
in other words, check off the third configuration in the utility, then
exchange the connections on the second and third cards, leaving the first and fourth cards be.

as far as running below max speed, i figure as long as your workload doesn't suffer, then its fine.
Oh, and another question, does it always, always flash when you boot-up?
Do you guys shut down the system every night?
We rarely reboot it, and I'm not the only one that would see it reboot. This system is in a 24x7 Network Operations Center. I just know that rebooting takes a while for the monitor to come up all of the way.
