PSA: Do you remember a time before journaled file systems? (netbooks)

I didn't either.  So when I read "You should format your SSD-based netbook with ext2 because journals write too much and SSDs have a write limit," I thought, "Seems logical.  What could go wrong?"
Apparently I didn't remember the dark ages, when men were men and a power failure meant you lost your partition table.
So I'm having a BLAST with my new dell mini, and reading this guide, and it says to load a hotplug module for your SD cards.  I wonder, as any computer scientist would, whether it was really hotpluggable with this driver loaded.  So I put an SD card in, formatted it with ext2, mounted it, and proceeded to remove it from the system.
Freeze!
Guess it's not so hotpluggable.
Reboot.
No root filesystem.
Actually, it was there, but most of the files were either zeroed out or acted as if they had never been edited, i.e., blissfully newborn rc.conf, complete with defaults.
So, use journals.  It's formatted with ext3 this time.

FAT (or HFS) isn't journaled, everytime pre-Win2k crashed it required a full ScanDisk which took ages! ext2 is the same, although since it's a SSD that isn't that much of a problem.
Depending on the nature of the crash a journal might not have saved you from that. Just because it has a journel doesn't mean the partition table won't be dumped.

How do you change ring time before phone goes to voicemail?

You can configure many call-handling features on the iPhone, but not the number of times an incoming call rings before it goes to voicemail. Only your carrier can change that variable. Wireless service providers uniformly grant incoming calls four rings within roughly 20 seconds before sending them to voicemail. If you find that ring length too short or too long, contact your carrier to adjust it.

  • Linux Mint 17, migrated from Win7: Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.

I get this error message (The messages could not be filtered to folder 'Generic Folder' because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.) popping up on many, though not all of my incoming filters. I recently migrated from a Windows 7 installation to a Linux Mint 17 system.

I did give it time to run through everything when I initially migrated, and it frequently will sit open for 3 to 4 hours while I'm working on other projects.
The 'Generic Folder' represents sorting folders in my main mail account in Thunderbird. For example, my mail which is listed to filter into my 'Amazon' folder is sorted there with no problem, while any mail designated to be filtered into my 'Games' folder prompts the above error massage.

  • Journaled file system for startup volume only?

I have been told that the advantage of a journaled file system is only realized on the startup volume. Surely, protecting the critical startup files is first priority for most users, but does the advantage of a journaled file system apply to other drive volumes, too? Please explain why this is or is not true. Thanks.

it applies to all drives but it's much less relevant for non startup drives. startup drives are being written to constantly and other drives are not. the likelihood of an external drive being written to at the moment of say a power outage is much smaller than that for the startup drive. therefore having journaling on on nonstartup drives is not as crucial. you can still do it though if you want to.

  • HT200158 How do you to access Microsoft windows 7 files systems from OSX mountain lion

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4697 describes how to enable access to Microsoft windows file systems from an OSX lion system.
Mountain lion does not have this entry.
Now that I have a mac with Mountain LIon installed,
how do acces the files on a Microsoft windows 7 system that I have previously accessed?

Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

  • Solaris 7/8 - journaled file systems?

Do I need to do anything to enable this feature? I don't see any references to file system journaling on any man pages. Can I convert ufs file systems?, etc, etc ...

Yes, you have to mount the filesystems with option 'logging', see the
mount_ufs(1M) man page. Using the 'remount' option in combination
with 'logging' or 'nologging' you can turn it on/off on a mounted
filesystem. To enable it across a reboot, add the 'logging' option
into the last (= mount options) column for the relevant line in
    /etc/vfstab.

  • What to do if you simultaneously run Time Machine and File Vault

Never do what is mentioned in the subject line; even if you decrypt your drive, it does not spread to Time Machine, and so if you ever need to do a system restore, File Vault will forget your password and lock you out of your own system.
Thankfully, I ended up having recourse. The solution is to log in as root and create a disk image from the last Time Machine backup, "latest," and then duplicate that disk image. Having done that, paste the files into the user folder of your choice, recreating the account you have lost.

Realistically, your only option is to upgrade to an Intel-based Mac.
There is no way to use iCloud on a Mac running anything lower than OS X 10.7.2 - not even Snow Leopard.
You can access iCloud.com through a web browser on your current computer, but you'd need a Mac running 10.7.2 to move to iCloud and it wouldn't sync anyway...

  • Disk utility can't repair time machine disk - File system check exit code is 8

i have a WD My Passport 2Tb external hard drive that is split in to 2 volumes (1.5 & .5 TB). I use the smaller volume as my Time Machine disk. A couple of days ago I started getting an error that the Time Machine back up had failed and to use Disk Utility to repair the disk. So I launched DU and ran Verify Disk in the Time Machine volume. It quit verifying and told me to run Repair Disk EXCEPT the Repair Disk button was still greyed out.  If I select the physical drive, Repair Disk becomes available but gives me the above error. The other (larger) volume continues to work just fine.
The he Time Machine volume is read only now.
    I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1.
Hoping ting someone has a fix because I would prefer not to lose a years worth of Time Machine data.
    Mahalo for for any help.
    Steve Hudson

i'm afraid that the disk is too corrupt to repair. This could be because the drive is failing or you will need to erase the partition (which may not succeed unless you also repartition the drive.) If you must repartition the drive then you will lose data on both partitions. This is an important reason why you should not mix storage and backup on the same drive.
You will need to erase your Time Machine volume to see if that fixes the problem. You will lose all the backup data unless you get another external drive to which you can clone the backup volume before erasing it.

  • Time Machine and file system errors?

    Hardware:
    - 15" MBP 2GHz (mid 2006) 10.5
    - WD MyBook Premium 320gb
    Problem:
Time Machine backs up to a partition on the MyBook (drive is GUID partition table, partition is Mac OS Extended). Immediately after a TM backup to a reformatted partition, Disk Utility may or may not detect invalid sibling links, invalid key lengths, or other errors. If it does not detect them after the initial backup, subsequent backups of recently changed files will cause said errors. This is consistent; its occurrence is not a "maybe".
Disk Utility cannot fix these errors. fsck_hfs has had success in fixing these errors once. As I type fsck_hfs is running a second time, so we'll see the results from that. The first run produced the following:
    fsck_hfs -ypr /dev/disk1s2
    *Invalid node structure*
    (4, 44282)
    *Invalid volume file count*
(It should be 832071 instead of 802858)
    *Invalid volume directory count*
(It should be 181916 instead of 177095)
    *Invalid volume free block count*
(It should be 13931374 instead of 14042565)
    *Volume Header needs minor repair*
    (2, 0)
    Questions:
    - Of what is this behavior indicative?
    - Is the MyBook necessarily bad?
    - Is TM somehow the cause?
    - Could bad sectors on the MyBook be the cause?
    - Is the drive within the MBP the source of these problems (Disk Utility has not previously found any errors...)?
    I'm really at a loss...

Boot from the OS X installer disc that came with the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Time Machine corrupting file system

I've been using Time Machine on an external hard drive for a long time with success. Recently the volume got corrupted and I could not repair it from disk utility. After formatting the drive I did backups for a few more days and it happened again. I used diagnostic tools from the disk manufacturer and they did not indicate any physical failure in the equipment.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
    Thanks in advance!

That misbehavior is typical of a failing disk, diagnostics or not.  Replace it.

  • Dreamweaver CC October 2014 release - make sure you have plenty of time before updating

The October 2014 release of Dreamweaver CC has a lot of changes, most of which are improvements on the previous release. However, it also changes the default workspaces and the way that Split view works. Other UI changes include combining the Design and Live View buttons into a single button, and moving the Document Title field to the Property inspector.
Because this version has been completely rebuilt to make it 64-bit on both Mac and Windows, migrating extensions could take several minutes.
Make sure you have plenty of time before you hit the Update button in the Creative Cloud application manager. It takes a little while to get used to some of the changes.

Thanks for the heads up, David. I agree.
This was precisely why I had a detailed post today Dreamweaver October 2014 release is now live! Read this first. on this release.

  • Can you delete ODS indexes before loading each time in Process Chain

Can you delete ODS indexes before loading eachin time in Process Chain and rebuild them just like a cube. And do you have to delete the indexes if its a daily refresh where data is deleted and a full update is done everyday.

    Hi,
Are you using Secondary Indices on the ODS objects. I thought the Primary Index (which is also the Key Part of the ODS) is automatically updated during the Data Activation in the ODS. I am not sure if the Secondary Indicies are also automatically updated by the system.
