PSCS4 11.0.1 (OS 10.5.6) crash with Raw files
Throughout the day, I will open a Raw image in the Raw dialog box and CS4 will crash (see report below). Sometimes it will crash right when I quit CS4. Every few days it will crash for no apparent reason. Very annoying.
Any suggestions?
I only open one Raw picture at a time. I have cut PSCS4's RAM allocation to 80% and made sure my startup disk was not a scratch disk. Here's my details:

Eric
Would you please try to clear your preferences and cache for Camera Raw? Can you also send me your system info from PS. Launch go to Photoshop>Help>System Info and send me via email [email protected] If you crash again can you please submit it to Adobe crash reporter (a dialog should come up) If you can record all your steps before crashing would be very helpful. Thanks!

Lightroom 3.6 to photoshop CS4
I used to use Lightroom 2, a Canon 450D and Photoshop CS4. i had no problem using Lightroom, Photo/Edit in Photoshop to open and work with my images in photoshop. i then upgraded to Lightroom 3.6 and now use a Canon 60D camera and still use Photoshop CS4. When i click Photo/Edit in Photoshop now, Phoshop CS4 opens but the image doesn't appear. What can i do to rectify this?
OK things have change here. I expect you are working with raw files from your camera.
With LR 2 and PSCS4 the ACR version are in sync i.e. LR uses the equivalent of ACR 5.x and PSCS4 uses ACR 5.x.
Now LR 3.6 has the equivalent of ACR 6.6 and PSCS4 is using ACR 5.x. Since the ACR versions are not in sync you should get a warning dialog indicating that the ACR version needs to be updated in PSCS4 but this is not possible. If you are not seeing a warning dialog you need to do the following in Lightroom 3.6 go to Edit>Preferences>General Tab> click on "Reset all warning Dialogs". You should now see a warning dialog when you select Edit in PSCS4. You should choose "edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments". This will make Lightroom create a tiff file with your adjustments and send this to CS4. ACR in PSCS4 cannot process the LR 3.6 develop settings. -
Open With default Application in Bridge
When I double click a "RW2" file in Bridge my Photomatix application opens the file. Nowhere in the file associations do I see Photomatix or the "RW2" file format for that matter. I reset to default associations - still no joy. The only app showing in the "Open With" pull down in Bridge is "Photomatix (default)". How so I change this default to PS4?
To my knowledge RW2 is the Raw format for Panasonic ?
The file type association in Bridge prefs should be found under Panasonic.
In your situation it might show Photomatix. (mind you that Photomatix claims
to rather not convert Raw files in their own app because they have no good
converter for that and they are better in working with tiff). See if you
have the option to change this to CS4.
If not you will have to look in the supported Raw formats for your ACR
converter to see if your camera model is supported in the list for the ACR
plug in for CS4:
Try this link (otherwise find it with a search on the Adobe.com site):
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Mind that this is already the ACR 6 version that will only work with CS5.
Scroll down for the latest version for CS4 which should be ACR 5.7
Check your version in PSCS4: go to the menu Photoshop / about plug ins /
Camera Raw, This should show only one plug in with version 5.7
Also try to convert the files to DNG using Adobe's free DNG converter. DNG
files have much benefit and work also with older ACR and PS versions:
http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/
Problem is BTW longstanding, every vendor uses his own Camera Raw format and
to makes things worse, they also make a slightly different format for almost
every new type of camera they put on the market.
Adobe kindly delivers about 3 to 4 times a year a free new update for ACR
and DNG with support for most of those cameras.
It is best to first check compatibility with new cameras and third party
software. If you want to work with Raw files you better wait until support
is there or you have to use the vendor software (not always that nice to
work with)
The only app showing in the "Open With" pull down in Bridge is "Photomatix
(default)". How so I change this default to PS4? -
Photoshop CS4 doesn't recognize camera raw plugin on yosemite
Hi there,
I've been using Photoshop CS4 with the camera raw plugin for many years without issue. I recently got a new computer with Yosemite and when I installed PsCS4 it no longer worked with RAW files (5D mkii). I just tried downloading the newest version of the camera raw plugin, but Photoshop doesn't seem to recognize it. What can I do?The “latest version of camera raw” would be ACR 8.7.1 and that is only compatible with PS-CS6 or newer.
PS-CS4 would probably install with ACR 5.0 but the 5D Mark II needs at least ACR 5.2. The latest version of ACR you can install for PS-CS4 is ACR 5.7 which may be what you had on your old computer.
The usual way to update your Camera Raw plug-in would be to do PS / Help / Updates and let it check to see what is available, so try that.
I am not sure if that process still works, but you’re in luck because Adobe was still putting links to their installers on the website back in the CS4 era, so you should be able to download an installer and run it to get ACR 5.7 installed, from here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106 <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh> &platform=Macintosh
It’s possible that something in the newest OS will prevent this installer from working, of course, but at least try.
You can check what version of the ACR plug-in you have installed by doing PS / About Plug-in / Camera Raw -
PSCS4 Memory Error with Image Processor
When I use the image processor in PSCS4 to process a large number of raw files using ACR 5.1 (Nikon D3 NEFs), I consistently receive an error message after about 10-11 files have been processed that the instruction at 0x696336ab tried to read memory at 0x6C (or thereabouts) and the memory could not be read. I am saving as JPEGs with the color space set to sRGB.
I de-installed and reinstalled PSCS4, but the error persists. The image processor worked fine with PSCS3. A workaround that solves the problem is to process the files as a batch using a simple action to accomplish the task.
I am running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 with a dual Xeon processor and 2G of error correcting memory.Hmm.. I was getting a similar error with CS3 and was very happy to find that it appeared to be cured in CS4. The CS3 issue would appear if I tried to process more then 100 NEFs. My workaround was to do them in smaller batches (60-75). Perhaps you might try reducing the memory alotted to PS or run it without any other apps running?

PSCS4 Crashes related to MMXcore?
I'm seeing a very repeatable pattern of PSCS4 crashing during an image resize from 3200ppi to 400ppi
Each time it is of type EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
and exception code: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS
each time the crashed thread looks like it does here:
Thread 8 Crashed:
0 MMXCore 0x1e162258 X2_DecimateV + 216
Can I safely disable the MMXCore plug-in? Will that even help? Should I even have the MMXCore plug-in on this Intel Mac Pro?

I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be. I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be. This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations.
Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise. Note that this suggestion begins with "I still advocate…", not "Apple recommends…".
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.
====
Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night. If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388 Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large. Also, from:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
NOTE: There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject. Other, more reliable reports indicate that this seems to have been fixed in the current version of Leopard.
In any event, Repairing Permissions and/or running the Cron Scripts cannot hurt.
If you have DiskWarrior, run it regularly too. It can't hurt either, and it often improves stability and performance. -
Smart object layer from PS to AI. how to use??
I successfully work AI vector objects as placed objects into PS by copy pasting or file/place into a smart object layer in PS, I find value in making changes to my vector object dimensions in AI and seeing them updated in PS,
but I don`t know how to do it the other way, meaning a PS jpeg on a layer to AI as smart object, I choose an image on its own layer in PSCS4 and convert to smart object, I (right click) export the contents as jpeg smart object, and then back in AI go file/place the smartobject jpeg, when I make changes to the PSsmartobject in PS like colour shift or dimensions change nothing happens in AI,
I would like to have an image pasted from PS into AI whereby I can change colours and dimensions or add pixels like paint on that smartobject layer in PS and then have it update in AI...To my knowledge Illustrator does not support smart objects. However it does support image linking. Which means if you update a image in photoshop, Illustrator will know the file has changed.
When placing the file, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the open dialog box for link, make sure it is checked. When you update the file when Illustrator is running with that file opened, you will get a promt telling you the file has changed and asked you if you want to update the image.
If you choose not to update the image at that time, you can click on the linked file text in the top tool bar and update the image from there.
If the file is not open or Illustrator is not running then the file will update the next time you open the file.
Also you will find a edit original button in the top tool bar to take you back to what ever image editor is assigned to that file format.
To assign a file format to photoshop:
For this example we will use jpeg extention
1) Open windows explorer
2) Menu options tools>folder options>File types tab>scroll to jpeg and click on it
3) Click the advanced tab
4) see what actions are listed odds are only open and printo are listed
5) If Edit is not listed, click on the new button
6) For the action type EDIT
7) For the application used to perform action click the browse button
8) Browse for photoshop.exe
9) The following should now be in the application used to perform action box:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe" %1
The above file location is assuming you have CS3 and you used the default installation edit original button in Illustrator and the right mouse button menu in windows explorer will take you to photoshop to edit the file.
10) After you click OK you will see the new EDIT action in the list
11) Click OK and then click close to get out of all the dialog boxes
The action can be removed at any time or edited to use another application. -
Trying to find a fix for the error one gets when asking PSCS4 to ' print '! After years of working well, out of the blue when I select ' print ' I get the error message telling me that I must first install a printer despite the fact that I have a working printer installed! Actually have 3 printers installed and they ALL WORK JUST FINE. This in an Adobe PS 4 error. The solutions offered by Adope are all unworkable as they all tell you to first select print and then do something else BUT IF YOU SELECT PRINT YOU GET THE ERROR MESSAGE AND CANNOT DO ANYTHING ELSE! STUPID. Help??
Thanks for the idea. I tried it but it didn't work. Still get the same message. Good news is that I found it happens only with that one image! SO.... I recreated the print file from the raw file and all is well again. Geesh. Still would like a solution other than buying CS6 ! Tried all the Adobe recommended paths but since I neglected to register the product I'd have to pay for further ' advice' from them.

Why not use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3?
I will post this on both the Bridge and Ps User-to-User forums as it applies to both.
I have PsCS3 and PsCS4 installed side by side in the default folders assigned by Adobe but have shifted my Bridge CS4 Cache (containing all the thumbnails and previews) from C:Documents and Settings\etc to a subfolder within My Documents, which I had previously moved to my F: drive - my main data drive.
I have found Bridge CS4 to be much more stable than Bridge CS3. Additionally, Bridge CS4 has certain features which make it more attractive and easier to use than Bridge CS3. I want to use Bridge CS4 in conjunction with PsCS3 until Adobe has sorted out the problems with PsCS4 - which at the moment is simply unuseable on my rather old and humble system.
On my system, I seem to be able to use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3 without any problems detected so far. I even have things set up such that any JPEG, TIFF or PSD file double clicked within Bridge CS4 or within Windows Explorer (Win XP Pro SP3) automatically opens the file in PsCS3 and not PsCS4 (provided, of course, that PsCS4 is not itself already running). Furthermore, even with PsCS3 running beside Bridge CS4, from within Bridge CS4 I can open any RAW, JPEG or TIFF file in Camera Raw 5.1 and use its new features (Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, extra vignetting capabilities, etcetera) which were not available in the last release of Camera Raw (4.6 I think) associated with PsCS3. The only problem comes when trying to open edits made in Camera Raw 5.1 in PsCS3 using the "Open Image" button in ACR - it does nothing/won't work, this is, it won't open the image with the ACR adjustments in PsCS3. That's not a big deal for me - as I am currently not doing any work within ACR (any version) and if I needed to I could simply save the ACR edits and then open the files in PsCS4, save the files as PSDs and then open them in PsCS3 to finalise them there.
Has anyone else had a similar experience, or does anyone else know of any reason(s) why I should not continue to use this workflow, at least in the short term?I've been away. Thanks John, Bart and Buko for your responses. Think you misunderstood my post Bart, but it does not matter now. John got the correct message. Buko: of course CS3 cannot use ACR 5.x - that was implicit in my post.

Camera Raw in Bridge CS 4 Problem
Hi!
Recently I downloaded the Photoshop CS 4 trial version but I can't make Camera Raw work inside Bridge. Whenever I try to open ACR in Bridge, the app crashes. The same thing happens when I try to access the Camera Raw settings inside Bridge. Opening rawfiles within Photoshop works fine though.
I'm sitting on an iMac intel C2D with 10.5.5. Earlier I had CS 3 installed but before installing CS 4 I did a complete clean up with adobes clean up script.
This is really annoying and I haven't been able to find a solution. What can I do?
Best regards
/FelixThanks Ann but that was not what I meant to ask, I now see that I was not very clear in this question and also not very clear in reading the original post :-)
I was asking this question to the OP to check wether he was able to open it in PS instead of Bridge, because I thought he could not work with ACR at all. It seems I was a little to busy with other things because he states in his first post that he can open the Raw files in PS itself and I assume he means ACR with that.
If so there is not much reason in checking the ACR version or wondering if there is only one Camera Raw installed if he can actually use ACR via PS itself. I was just trying to rule some options out :-)
Felix, just to be sure:
-You have Bridge CS4 installed in the default application folder at your Mac and not in an other location?
-In the root library (not user!) you have in the path: Macintosh HD/Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/Plug-Ins-CS4/FileFormats: CameraRaw.plugin (version:5.1)?
-You have refreshed preferences already as per Ramón (also no Opera Web browser)
-In the preferences for Bridge in the start up scripts section both Bridge CS4 and PSCS4 are activated?
- To repeat Ann, have you tried it already in a new user account to check if the problem is only in your current user or in your system?
Will you be so kind and report back for al these questions?

Photoshop batch processing missing from menu
Hi everyone:
I'm having a terrible time today trying to process the 3500 images I've got. I set up an action to process them, but I can't figure out how to link them to be used through Bridge. I'm running Bridge CS5 with PS CS4, and I'm used to going to Tools->Photoshop->Batch. It's missing entirely from the menu.
I did a bunch of research and found that this issue likely has something to do with the Startup Scripts. So I checked those, and Photoshop is missing from the options. I can't find where that script right reside, as the folder the scripts are supposed to live in appears to be empty (I do have Adobe Bridge CS5 and InDesign CS5 as options, though the script folder itself is empty).
If it's a simple matter of installing the appropriate script, where might I find it? And if not, how can I solve the problem? If it's a simple matter of installing the appropriate script, where might I

By default they are installed in the library at root level ( Mac OS:
//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Startup Scripts CS4/Adobe Photoshop/)
but I have no experience with - nor would I recommend - the use of CS5
Bridge with PSCS4.
If you don't have installed PSCS5 for whatever reason your fastest way would
be to start Bridge CS4. Let the folder with the files cache first and use
that Bridge version with PSCS4 to perform your batch. BTW, you can save and
export the actions from PSCS4 as a set and import them again in PSCS5.
And of course you could also open the batch in PS itself like we used to do
in the past before Bridge. PS/File/Automate/Batch and choose the folder you
want to apply the batch in. -
Photoshop CS4 Extended Crashes Since Updating Acrobat to 9.3
I have CS4 Web Premium. When I save a document in pdf format from Photoshop(PS) CS4, it normally opens the saved document in Acrobat 9.x. Up until yesterday, when I installed the Acrobat 9.3 update, the results have always been to have then have the document open in both Acrobat and PSCS4. No problem. Now, however, when I save a pdf document in PSCS4, the document, after an unusually long lag after clicking the "save pdf" button in PSCS4, opens in Acrobat as before BUT Photoshop Crashes; an error says that PS experienced an error and will be closed....
I would like to know how to correct this, if possible. Alternatively, I would like to uninstall the update to Acrobat, since everything worked great before I installed it. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I have already tried the repair function in Acrobat and the problem did not
resolve. However, in photoshop, when in the Save PDF prefs dialog appears, I
unchecked "view pdf". Now Photoshop no longer opens Acrobat to view the pdf
there, but also it no longer crashes. I can live with that. A lot less
trouble then resintalling Acrobat, with each of the incremental updates. I
have Acrobat installed also on a second computer, but will not be updating
that computer to Acrobat 9.2.
Thank you. -
Photoshop CS4 Extended crashes when exiting/quitting
I recently installed CS4 and when I quit Photoshop CS4 I get a "DDE Server... memory could not be 'read'" error. I've looked all over the forums for solutions to this, tried deleting my preferences file, reinstalling CS4, and fiddling with performance options, but nothing seems to make a change. I never had much trouble with CS2 or CS3. This is really annoying.
Chris,
From a programming standpoint, the errors are different, but they are similar in that PSCS4 consistently crashed with the above posted error message on exiting after having loaded an image. I read the Adobe troubleshooting advice and traced the problem to a bad video driver for my old Quadro 2 Pro card. I downloaded the Adobe certified driver and the problem has not recurred.
It helps to RTFM. -
