PSD'a & FCP

Every since I switched to FCS2 quite some time ago I have been experiencing an odd behavior in regards to my psd's. In the good old days I could create a graphic in photoshop, flatten it, and bring it into FCP and it came in as a flattened file.
Now whenever I bring ANY psd in from photoshop (flattened or layered) it comes into FCP as a nest. This is a major pain in the butt for me and it actually causes me to get a lot of errors while working with them but that is a whole other thread. It doesn't matter if I use CS2 or CS3 to create the psd, it always comes in as a nested sequence when brought into FCP.
But it's only happening with files created in PS. If I export a psd from Motion it comes in as a normal file, no layers or nests.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Am I the only one who isn't a fan of this new "feature"? Does anyone know a way around this?

So is there no longer any way to bring a psd from PS in FCP without it being a sequence? And why does a psd from Motion not come in as a sequence?
I understand that there are other optionsas far as file formats but my question is why is this happening all of the sudden? 90% of my work is based on a core set of media that I have been using for a couple of years now. So I was hoping that maybe there was some setting or something that could bypass this "feature".

  • AE to PSD to FCP color shift

I've ready a few posts and cant seem to correct this.
I have an 1920x1080 After Effects CC project has a simpe 3 part animation to it.
A :15 OPEN that animates to a STILL FRAME and then an :15 OUTRO.
The STILL FRAME is exported from AE (COMP TO LAYERED PSD) that the client will add headshots to and then export a number PNGs to be brought into FCP7 (NOT X) and place between the OPEN and CLOSE. Simple Template.
In FCP7 The ANIMATION and the STILLS (PNGs) all line up perfectly except for the color shift.
I've ready about the gamma 1.8 .2...., QT, PRORES, etc...
I've tried a few settings, but I must be missing something.
Any help to what or where needs to be set in AE, PSD or FCP or QT7, QTX to get this to match?
    under the gun.
(weird! looks fine when I do it in FCX, but client only uses FCP7.)
    THANKS!

Only thing I can think of is a work around... Process all the clips that are going to be part of the AE effect thru AE, so that the color is the same when you get to the effect. (hide the shift that way). It's a work around... you should report this to Apple too in FCP feedback.

  • PSD Lower Thirds & FCP: Help!

Hi all, I have a lower thirds graphic as a PSD Photoshop file.
I am having difficulty incorporating the file into FCP. I have imported as layers into FCP but the formatting is all off. My project is 1920 x 1080 16:9. In Photoshop, I tried to save the document as a JPEG flattened. The background is not transparent. I used clipping paths and fooled around with background layer opacity but the background was always opaque on bringing into FCP.
Does anyone have suggestions on making the bg transparent in PS and saving in that program for easy manipulation in FCP. Or properly formatting a PSD layered doc in FCP?
    Thanks!

Here are the steps I follow when prepping a psd for FCP:
Start out by making sure your pixel dimensions and aspect ratio are correct for your frame size.
    1. save a copy because you will be flattening some elements
    2. merge all background elements into the background
    3. flatten out all type, vector, masked, or effected (styles) layers using the following method for CS2+:
    -select the layer to flatten
    -make new layer
-select both layers , make smart object & merge
this will rasterize the type and effects in the layer.
Now your file is ready to import to FCP. If you are pixel aspect ratio correction in photoshop, then the file should import correctly according to your easy setup, if you have been owrking in square pixerls in photoshop, then be sure to correctly identify the aspect ratio in the sequence setting for the sequence fcp creates when you import the psd - these will inherit the pixel aspect ratio setting for the sequence preset set in your easy setup, which is usually not square.
Hope this helps. Really, you shouldn't have to bother with extracting alpha channels and keying out layers in FCP.

  • Pan & Zoom multilayered PSDs. Help needed

    Hi All,
I've got an edit I need to finish pronto then another one this coming monday and need to get some questions answered before then or in serious trouble!
    Additional details: Running FCP 5
We have a client that wants to do an animatic (motion graphic add)
He want's to be able to import a multilayered photoshop image WHILST keeping the original image quality, if the dimensions are above 720x576 (I edit in UK therefore PAL pixel dimensions), so you can pan and zoom across the image while simultaneous fading up and down and moving certain layers.
I was originally going to edit it on an Avid Adrenalin but found out that you can do some but not all of these things without great difficulty. SO am therefore going to edit on my FCP suite.
I tried last night to import a multilayered photoshop image and made it double the normal 16x9 PAL pixel dimentions (which are 1204x576) making it 2048x1152.
Doing this I hoped it would let me try and achieve a pan & zoom effect, but I found that it distorted the aspect ratio of the clip.
Making it squashed, even though my new project that I had set up was Pal DV Anamorphic (16x9). It dispalayed the newly created large psd as eveen more anamorphic - more like cinema scope!!
I looked it the motion tap and the distort aspect ratio in the motion tab was zero.
    I then did a test:
flattened the psd, changed the image size to 1024x576.
I then imported that and all was fine, it imported it at the correct ratio.
    Also major question.
Is FCP able to handle these graphics easily.
When I import them and insert them into the new seq I can set that seq to Unlimited RT low playback to see the move easily.
But when I open the nest that has all the layers it wont let me set RT settings, it only displays a few options, none that allow me to view in low res.
The client wants to edit in DV not lower so cant do motion jpg offline res.
He also needs the large images, eg we pan across a models hair only to fade up a layer of a product appearing in her hand.
I don't know After Effects well enough to attempt the edit on that, and I don't know motion at all.
The photographer/ client says he's done all his previous edits in FCP.
Is there an article I could read or is there any advise anyone can give me about approaching this project?
Minimizing render time, work flow etc
Has anyone used Lyric Media's Pan Zoom Pro?? (Or was that used by people with FCP 4 and now FCHD can acheive Pan & Zooms really well???)
    Thanks anyone for the help!!!!
    d

Tom/ anyone else who can help,
(note: also posted on 2pop erlier, just incase Tom/anyone else read that one, saving you the trouble of reading twice!)
    Sorry back again,
very nearly sorted after breakthrough last night.
Just need to clear up one more thing:
An FCP editor mate says he keeps the graphics he's given high res i.e. 300dpi, he says you can zoom in and keep the quality.
Can fcp handle bigger image resolutions? I know it can only go up to 4000 pixels squared but what dpi can it go up to. I always thought it would only work in 72 dpi.
Before finding about about fcp being able to handle higher than 72dpi, after numerous tests and conversations with you, I'd come to the conclusion that:
If designing in Photoshop for Final Cut Pro
If you don't use photoshop's PAL DV presets take this into consideration:
In graphics for 4:3 FCP projects:
    768x576 convert to 720x576
    1536x1152 convert to 1440x1152
always divide graphics width in photoshop by:
    1.06666666667
In graphics for 16:9 FCP projects:
    1024x576 convert to 720x576
    2048x1152 convert to 1440x1152
always divide graphics width in photoshop by:
    1.42222222222
I'm not sure of the actual size of the images the client is going to give me & I desperately don't want to get into the problem I had yesterday of distorted aspect ratios when importing to FCP.
    The only question is
If he gives me a photo that's 300dpi I'm going to have a problem with knowing exactly what size the image will be in photoshop regarding rescaling etc.
When he gives me the graphics, I'll check the dimetions in photoshop.
I should check if it's a rectangular or suare pixel doc first correct?
My thinking is that it'll be square pixel coming from a digital camera, and we'll prob work in 4:3 (i've just been given video rushes to combine with the edit at 4:3 res)
    Regarding the graphics,
Should I work in a high res and keep the pixel dimentions as high as I need up to 4000pix squared or should I keep it at 720x576 and keep the res high?
FCP works better with images at 720x576 they don't need rendering regardless of the dpi?? ANd also when you step into the PSD nest it gives you an option of Unlimited RT, it even has a dark green line in Safe RT.
Whereas when I work in images over 720x576, (say double that at 1440x1152) the PSD seq FCP creates when importing the multi-layered graphic has a red render line and won't let me work in Unlimited RT or Safe RT, it just gives the option of: 'use playback settings' or 'full quality'.
would it be good to create a photoshop template, so that I can drop the graphics I'm given into that, then manipulate it accordingly??
    All advice welcome!!
Sorry finding if still finding it slightly confusing!
    Almost there!!!!
    thanks for reading

  • Imported PSD files showing up as images rather than sequences with layers

I am trying to import layered photoshop files (.PSD) into FCP 6, but they are not showing up in my browser as sequences with a video track dedicated to each layer, like the manual says they should. They show up instead as still images. It worked once on a previous project, but not any more and I haven't changed any FCP settings or Photoshop settings that I am aware of since then.
If any can tell me how to import them as layered sequences, I would greatly appreciate it!
Please note: I already confirmed the image mode is RGB colour and that the bit depth is 8 as someone suggested in a December 10th post to someone with a similar problem.
    Rookie

Tom W, Meg the Dog & David H,
David H - No, they wouldn't open as sequences when I double clicked them.
Meg the Dog - I confirmed the settings you suggested and noticed that a few of the images I wanted to import were over that 4000 pixel width restriction you mentioned, however, without resampling them, I was able to import them...but only after Tom W's suggestion...
Tom - I'm glad you raised the point about photos edited in Photoshop on a PC versus a Mac. My photos were in fact edited on my PC, and it wasn't until I opened them and re-saved them on my Mac, that I was able to import them as a sequence into FCP. Thank you so much for pointing this out!
Problem solved! Thank you so much Tom W, Meg the Dog and David H!

  • Importing PSD

    Hello,
I am trying to import a psd into FCP 6 with multiple layers and for some reason when I open it in FCP the image is all messed up. some of the layers don't pop up, the glow effects, cropping and fading is all weird.
    Please help

First you need to rasterize any layer effects in photoshop before saving the psd file (you might want to duplicate the file before doing this). There are 2 other possible issues. If I remember correctly, some people reported problems importing psd files that had any empty layers. And, psd files created on a pc need to be opened in photoshop on the mac and saved there before importing into fcp.

  • How can I make this effect to introduce somebody in my video?

    Hi,
I like to know how I can make this effect to introduce somebody: www.hofleverancier.be
You can see the effect on the 7nd second.
    Can anybody help me out?
    Thanks!
    Glenn.

    There are many ways.
    One of them would be:
export the specific point were it starts to Quicktime Conversion > Still Image >OPPTIONS: Photoshop.
Open this still in Photoshop. Cutout the man by using the magic lasso tool.
So then 2 layers. Background and Foregrond (The man).
Import this 2 layered PSD in FCP. Cut it right after the point you exported. On V1 the Background, On V2 the Man. Bring the background to Black and white. Set Keyframes for the SCALE on V2, in order to 'zoom in' on the person a little bit.
    And ad a title effect.
Well, this is the short version. Try to play with it yourself. You can also do all the compositing in Motion, or After Effects.

  • Insane Gamma Shifting...Losing my mind

I have a transition clip, the last frame of which is identical to the menu still it connects to. But when the menu activates there is a noticeable shift in brightness.
The transition was rendered out of After Effects. I know there have been gamma issues between Apple and Adobe products before, so I tried several workarounds:
I rendered the transition clip from AE CS 4, both with and without the legacy gamma setting in the project settings.
I changed the working color space to be identical to the .psd used in the menu.
I switched from .psd to .tif
I rebuilt the project in AE 6.5 and rendered from that.
I exported the menu stills from the same animation they were used in.
I opened the menu stills in photoshop, as well as the animation (as an image sequence) and compared them there - identical color values.
I opened the still and the animation, and the .m2v of the animation in Final Cut, put them on separate tracks and compared them. All identical.
DVDSP is shifting the gamma of either the .m2v or the still, and i'm not sure which, but the mismatch is noticeable, and it ruins the smooth transition.
I don't want to use the animation as the backdrop, setting a loop point, because I don't want the full animation to play everytime the menu is returned to.
I can see the shift in the menu viewer, as well as simulator, and in the Apple DVD player. The only thing I haven't tested is a set-top player, but I want this to work correctly on a computer as well as a set-top.
Has anyone experienced this? Please help.

Solved it, but I'm not happy with the solution. The one thing I hadn't tried was bringing the .psd into FCP and exporting it. I imported that into DVDSP and it and the .m2v frame matched perfectly.
So it seems now if you have a still created entirely in an Adobe app, and you want to use it in an Apple app, and have it precisely match video or stills created in an Apple app with the same source material, you have to first "Apple-ize" the Adobe created material by re-exporting it from an Apple app. A rare situation, to be sure, it seems, given the lack of similar posts over the last year. But a real zinger when it happens and ... it could happen to you!
I don't know if it it occurs in the reverse, but i'm wondering if it's actually more of a quicktime versus adobe or quicktime versus everybody else thing.
They seem to have gone a little schizo with the useless Quicktime X.

  • 16 x 9 crisis - paralyzed by indecision!

    Maybe it's my crisis situation but I've been reading posts and can't figure out how to get started here. I've never worked in 16 x 9 in FCP. A client just called and said they need a :10 graphic spot to run on a 16 x 9 aspect ration scoreboard type display. The spot is going to be created out of stills (so I have control of their aspect in Photoshop) and some 16 x 9 DV footage I've got on tape. Two questions;
What should I set my sequence settings so they'll get the 16 x 9 they've requested?
What is the actual pixel measurement of 16 x 9 DV so I create the stills properly?
I've got to FedEx something in three hours!!!
By the way, I'm working in FCP HD 5.0.4

What should I set my sequence settings so they'll get the 16 x 9 they've requested?
    Create a new DV-NTSC sequence (Command-N)
Select it in the Browser, then press Command-0 (that's Zero) to bring up the Sequence Settings dialog
Check the box for Anamoprhic 16:9, located next to Pixel Aspect Ratio drop-down, then click OK
What is the actual pixel measurement of 16 x 9 DV so I create the stills properly?
This depends on what version of Photoshop you are using. If you're using CS or CS2, there is a preset for Widescreen DV/DVD (could be wrong about the exact label though).
If you're the kind of person that likes to do things manually (or you're like me and still using Photoshop 7), start with an 864x480 graphic. Before saving/exporting for FCP, adjust the image size to 720x480.
Tip: If you keep your graphic files as PSD files, FCP recognizes it automatically as Anamorphic. However, if you use TIFFs (for instance), you must tag the stills as Anamorphic after import. That is, import your TIFF file into FCP, select it in the Browser, press Command-9, check the Anamorphic column, then click OK.

  • Transparency Issues with PSD files in FCP 7

I'm having some weird file layer transparency issues with FCP 7. I'm working on a project that's made up entirely of graphics drawn in Photoshop CS5. They Photoshop settings were done to match an HDTV 1080i (16:9) sequence in FCP. In FCP, the pixels were set to square, field dominance to none, frame rate to 29.97 and compressor is Apple ProRes 422.
I exported my PSD files out of Photoshop, with each layer being exported to its own file. In general, things were fine, but there were a few files where you could see the outline of the character against the background, but mind you that this is only visible once the video is rendered out in the FCP timeline. Nothing is visible in Photoshop, nor is it visible while viewing from the Browser in FCP. I told this to the artist and he went back and made corrections, making sure everything was on a transparent background, but the result was still the same - once I rendered the graphics out in FCP, these edge lines were visible.
I then went back into Photoshop, opened all the files that were giving me trouble, clicked on the "foreground color" and changed it to a color other than white, then back to white and hit ok. That seemed to work - even when rendered out, I was getting no artifacts, until I tried enlarging the graphics over 100%.
Also, with some of the same graphics, I was trying to layer them so that a guy was in the foreground with other people and a van behind him in the background. Once again, no problem in Photoshop, but once brought into FCP, the background people were actually being displayed over the main foreground character.
I'm pretty baffled - what to do? I'll attach a photo of the weird lines around the characters. It might be hard to see at this size, but if you download and enlarge it to 300% or so, you'll see what I mean.

Just saw that Adam's original post was an older one.  Will keep this here anyway to maybe help the most recent poster.

Adam, did you try what David said about pointing to the root folder?  Did that work?
When I copy the SD card, I name a new folder on my hard drive something specific, like Smith Wedding.  Then I copy everything inside the SD card to that new folder.  The first level inside my new folder now has folders for
    AVF_INFO
    PRIVATE
and on down from there.  When you open Log and Transfer, point it to the Smith Wedding folder (of course whatever you have named yours).
ClipWrap2 also works great to convert the files beforehand if you want.
What camera are you using?  I have the Sony NX30 and it was giving me fits because the .mts files don't ingest if the clips are longer than 11 min. My problem is that I'm still on FCP 6.0.6.  I think 7.0.3 fixed that.  But I did find enough work-arounds to keep the camera.
This is a link to the full discussion if you are interested.

  • How can I get rid of "Jagged Edges" in FCP from .psd/.tif/.tga text files?

    Hi guys,
I posted this once before but don't know if anyone looked at it or not.
I am getting "Jagged Edges" in .psd/ .jpg/ .tif/ .tga text files

    What is going wrong?
It is getting very frustrating for me at this point.

    The usual questions...
Have the clips you're looking at been "fully" rendered?
Are you looking at the computer monitor or an external broadcast monitor?
You can't judge what you've got unless you look at FCP output on a broadcast monitor.

I am running FCP5.1 and I have a still image (.jpg) of a consumer product with the name of the product and the description on it.
When I view it in the viewer or canvas, I see jagged edges around the name, description and the product.

  • PSD file to FCP

    Good Morning all,
I have run into a problem that I have been researching on the net and have found others with similar problems but no solutions. I have made a layout for a DVD menu in Photoshop which will consists of a background, text, and basic boxes. The PSD files are imported perfectly in layers and I am able to manipulate each layer individually which is great; however, my final product is outputted a bit blurry. I tried tweaking some settings a bit and was able to make the text a bit more legible but it's still not as crisp and clear as my original.
I am using a canvas size of 720*480 72dpi in Photoshop so that I can see action safe guidelines and so that it import into FCP in the right places on screen. What else can I try tweaking to get this looking as crisp and professional as my original. The final product will be imported into DVDSP and I want to be able to play this on a computer and a TV.
P.S. I did export and put this on a DVD to see the end result on a TV and I get the same image on the TV as I did on the computer.
    Thanks

Update: I have gotten this project to export from FCP to QT with no problems and retains it's sharp and crisp images (even the text). Now when I burn it to DVD the text has a tiny glow around the letters. Almost as if there is an image of the letters not perfectly aligned with the letter giving it a glow of some sort. Everything else on the menu looks the way it is supposed to.
Any thought on how I can fix this in DVDSP? I figured out the reason it lookes so terrible before was because it was being compressed by FCP on export. I took the compression off and got my menu with effects to look sharp and crystal clear. I'm guessing the reason the letters are slightly off when burning to DVDSP is because of the compression but how can I set this up so that the text looks clearer?
