Psd corrupted!!? (Layers Gone)

I was working yesterday late night on a project, but when i open the psd file today its only a black background with some weird red pixels, is there any tool to recover it, or what should i do ? i use cs6

I don't think I've ever seen a PSD file corrupted on disk myself.  Often it's a sign of system instability.  Did you have a crash or power failure while it was saving (keeping in mind that it may appear to finish before it's actually all the way saved to disk)?
Are your disk hardware and file system healthy?  Look in your event logs for any indications of failures.

  • Need Help. PSD corrupted in middle of workflow.

I have no idea what happened to my psd. I have never seen this before and am hoping I just pressed some keys.
I closed photoshop restarted computer and nothing happened. All these are supposed to have images I was on my last layer & wasted 2 hours.
Has anyone had their psds corrupt like this? If so How did you fix it? I am on a deadline. Also how can I prevent this problem from happening again.
    PLEASE HELP!

I hate to tell you this, but you are probably out of luck.  We see this once a month or so, and people seldom manage to retrive anything worth while, but it is unusual to see this happen mid workflow.  It usually seems to happen when saving, or is discovered when attempting to open a file.
You mave have something in the recovery folder if Photoshop consideres itself to have crashed, but I don't know what OS you are using.  (Allways best to upload your entire screen at full res so people can more information).
You may be able to use one of the PSD recovery apps found on the Web, if your last save is also corrupted.  I'm assume you save often?  It is also a good idea to increment file names every 15 to 30 minutes in case of this sort of situation.  A lesson the regular posters here have learned from other poster's misfortune.
Good luck, but my gut feeling is that you are probably not going to have any.

  • AI - PSD Most layers missing

Quick question, I have a layout in AI that I need to convert to PSD.
Did the File > Export > Photoshop .psd > Retain layers.
Then AI tells me that "some containers/layers are reduced", and the PSD I get has simply 3 layers out of 12. The rest are rasterized into a graphic.
I've tried fiddling with the export settings but no change.
I've seen a few people asking this question but no replies. I'm hoping maybe someone can help?
    Thanks Angus
Win XP, CS3 Design Premium, lotsa memory (RAM and Disk)

I was fighting with this same problem, and the case is to remove all dynamic filters like: drop shadow, round corners, inner glow, all of those (effects from apperance panel) must be rasterized or you can use an "expand apperance" option.
For "drop shadow" for example "expand apperance" is no enough, because after this illustrator makes transparency mask, so rasterization is the only way. After removing all this stuff, export to psd is quite clear with editable text and all elements keeps separated layers.
Now with that knowledge if you design web pages in illustrator like I do, is good to design all flat elements with text in illustrator then export to psd (without fighting with apperance filters), and all effects like drop shadows, glows etc. add in photoshop. Easy, but all YOU web guys should use illustrator please, it's easier to design, files are smaller, and export or slicing options are the same as in psd, illustrator has pixel grid and raster preview !!!! ,so why the hell you still work in psd only
    cheers

  • Photoshop CS4 Crash, Unsaved Document, Layers Gone?

I was working on a psd with multiple layers, having not saved, the program crashed. I reopened the file and my layers (that were saved from a previous session) were gone- leaving me with a flat image. Why?
Is there a way to retrieve them, I am assuming not?
    Thanks!

Norton is NASTY stuff in OS X.  Stay away from anything with the Norton name if you're on any version of OS X, especially do NOT let anything with the Norton name (like Norton Anti Virus, File Saver) ever reside on your computer.
NAV (Norton Anti Virus) can lead to permanent file damage.  Files damaged by NAV are not recoverable.  NAV can also prevent many PostScript files from parsing, even if not damaged permanently.
Disk Doctor and Speed Disk are known to cause the kind of directory damage that can lead to kernel panics.
    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Another excellent reason to steer clear from all things Norton!
The kernel panic FAQ is divided by the order of most common occurrences of kernel panics:
    • Directory
    • Drivers
    • Permissions
    • RAM
        1. A directory failure or user accidentally moving .kext files that should be left alone. The directory may fail, due to an accident caused by Norton Utilities or Systemworks, which may at random corrupt a directory even when trying to repair it. Norton Anti-Virus will not do this, but Norton Disk Doctor and Norton Speed Disk have a history of doing this.  [emphasis mine]

  • Fatal .psd corruption on PS CS6 Trial

    Hi!
I'm just testing out the PS CS6 trial version and something weird is happening. Suddenly my .psd got "corrupted" although it's not a big file with many layers.
So I want to know if there's some general incompatibility with my rig and PS CS6 (coming from the GIMP world) or it's like that PS6 just screwed for no reason the .psd file (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ewfh96gpbuwt0an/Edukami_wisdom_page.psd)

  • Photoshop CS6 PSD losing layers

Hi, my Photoshop CS6 PSDs are getting flattened if opened by any previous versions of Photoshop, depsite not being saved just opened.  When I open the original in CS6 again, all layers are merged.  Where there were 12 layers, there is now one.  This is causing loads of problems.  Please advise.

Yes, thank you, Conroy.  Now I think of it that was the true basis behind my post above.  It wasn't that the Save As PDF operation had flattened the image, it was that it had turned off the option Conroy showed for subsequent operations.
You can reproduce it like this:
    1.  Open a layered document.
    2.  Save As - PDF, disable Preserve Editing Capabilities.
    3.  Save As - PSD, note that the above mentioned checkbox is now OFF.
This is a nasty gotcha, and while the little caution symbol is there it's not that noticeable.  Maybe Adobe should draw the red border around it as we have done.

  • Import Video To Layers gone?

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended and I recently transfered to a new PC and redownloaded it, I installed all updates. I recently went to go transfer a .mov file into layers via Import Vide to Layers in File -> Import to see that it is gone. How do I fix/get it back? I run 64-bit Windows 7 by the way.

As Zeno said. QT is 32bit and only works in the 32bit version of PS Extended.

  • Illustrator CS5 - Export to PSD merges layers that shouldn't be merged!

I've been fiddling with settings and layer orders for a while now, but I still get issues!
Everytime I export a PSD from my Illustrator CS5 file, it wants to merge the last few layers together! If you look at the pics, there is nothing special, or different about the layers that get merged (the last 3 in the layer order on the pics). I've tried even putting a blank layer in between to see if it would just merge that, but then it'll merge the last 3 layers, along with any blank spacers I've put in!
Does anyone have a clue why this might happen?
    Thanks all!

I can tell you exactly why it happens - because Adobe is a publicly traded company and so are focused on profits instead of quality. Bug updates don't sell product - new features do. For instance, how basic is it for a program to remember to keep the "Preview" box checked when you do a Blend, or to have a default pen setting (help me if I've missed this one as I'm also new to illustrator). Coming from using a 1999 version of Coreldraw that I bought on a deal for $99, this upgrade to the "industry standard" is disappointing so far.
And I don't necessarily blame the programmers - I'm sure there just doing what they're told. l'll end this rant here.
Here's a workaround for this bug that they may never address because it won't sell product:
    >When you first export your file, take note of what layers are being merged.
    >Go back in Illustrator and create a dummy layer between each of the those layers. Ex: create a text layer titled "Dummy Layer" and just copy/ move it between the layers that are merging in Photoshop.
    >Export file and open in Photoshop. The layers should be separated. Just delete the dummies.

  • Writing PSD with layers

I'm trying to generate a Photoshop file with Adjustment Layers. Does anyone have any pointers, or know of any methods of diagnosing problems in the file?
I've been able to make a file with multiple image layers which opens correctly in Photoshop. But when I try to make an adjustment layer, Photoshop won't open it, giving me the error: "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." I've tried adding various Image Resources and other bits, to no avail.
The few third party PSD parsers I've used don't seem to find any problem with the files I generate. For example, "psdparse" gives a very verbose breakdown of the file, and finds no errors.
    Here's a link to a sample file: http://bensyverson.com/share/photoshop/test.psd (warning: 15MB link)
    And here's the psdparse output:

Thanks, Tom. The XML output of psdparse is much easier for me to interpret than the verbose console output I had been using.
Incidentally, I think I solved my problem today. From what I can tell, Photoshop cannot handle files with adjustment layers when the Background layer's compression is set to Raw (uncompressed). It's interesting, because PS has no problem opening my images with multiple uncompressed image layers, but as soon as I threw an adjustment layer in there, PS complained ("not compatible with this version of Photoshop").
Switching to RLE for the background seemed to do the trick.
Just an FYI / heads-up for anyone banging their head against this some time in the future.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 is corrupting layers while their being saved

Some large layered  files are showing layer corruption.
Anyone know what's going on. I cannot save my work now.
I use frequency shift technique to clean up metal surfaces, so blending modes are used.
Also on some layers a pink tinted layer icon is visible where layer corruption is present
    Please help!

The problem looks like it is resolved.
Yesterday morning I was importing multiple memory cards into Lightroom 5.6 and a lot of the images were damaged in a similar way as the layers in Photoshop. Also the import was terribly slow  for USB3.
As I already moved the Photoshop projects I am working on to an other drive/bus and that seemed to solve the Photoshop layers problem, I checked my system. I have multiple USB3 ports and controllers in the system,  11 drives connected to (e)Sata and 4 through USB3. Also a USB3 HUB and a separate USB3 port for reading memory cards.
    What solved my problem:
I've changed the project/workdrive  from eSata to USB3. Since then no more damaged layers in PS CC 2014.
I've changed the Card reader USB3 port to another port/controller, and that solved my LR 5.6 Import problem.
I was also experiencing system freezes/slowdowns during the day (Audioplayer froze for a few seconds and made a terrible sound)
I've recently installed a new desk and moved my system. Possibly changed the USB3 ports/controller on some devices.
Since I've change the ports no more problems occurred, sometimes the audio player freezes and makes the sound, but the frequency and time are very sporadic now.
The system is going to get a complete reinstall in the next month to get rid of any residual problems that may have accumulated in the last 3 years since it was assembled.

  • Opening PSD with layers in photoshop touch

is it possible to open a PSD document with many layers in photoshop touch?

Sorry, no. (It was probably done as a mechanism to prevent crashing. PS Touch supports up to 12 layers vs. the hundreds (theoretically thousands) available in desktop Photoshop.)
You can, of course, do the reverse; open a PS Touch project exported as PSD or PSDX in Photoshop with layers intact.

  • Export Illustrator CS5.1 to PSD: flattens layers

Why can I not export layers to Photoshop? I need the text editable, too. Working in a multilayered .ai.
    thanks

I've been plowing through erroneous solutions for months now and I found a workaround, albeit a very limited one: If you happen to own Fireworks, this may do the trick:
*Open Fireworks and open the .AI file. Notice Fireworks will convert big groups to a rasterized image, so you may want to ungroup as much as you can.
*Save as a .psd file. Fireworks will do its best to convert the shapes to shape layers, and you'll find a .psd file with text and shape layer functioning and intact.
Please let me know if this works for you, and tell others if it does. For your amusement, here are some things that baffle me everyday:
*Illustrator and Photoshop have been in the same suite for years, yet exporting any slightly complex file as an editable vector file is virtually impossible. In effect, you can work with illustrator for your amusement, just don't expect to be able to deliver the file every client will ask you for.
*In Photoshop you can now apply a stroke to a path, stolen from the stroke feature in flash, yet this is somehow completely separated from the layer style stroke.
*Photoshop is still lacking any kind of asset library, so you have to manually open and drag any single object you intend to use over multiple files.
All these may be very personal nuisances, but it struck me how every time one of these subjects is brought up people start bringing in all kinds of completely unrelated topics and users are left stranded because there is no solution to the things that ought to have been fixed ages ago.

  • PSD in layered menu appears darker then orginal PSD file

    Hi,
I have a first play animation that times out and goes to a layered menu that contains a PSD file. For some reason the PSD file looks darker/richer then it does in the orginal Photoshop file. I've tried saving it out with Photoshop CS3 and CS2 but I'm getting the same problem, is there some color setting I have to change out before I import it into DVDSP?
    Thanks in advance

This is a problem of color management...
    1. In PS you must be sure your color management matches your final device (NTSC / PAL /HDTV)...
    2. In PS you must be sure proof color is off or (if on) your custom setup for RGB must match your color management settings (so NTSC if NTSC / HDTV is HDTV etc)
    3. Your document must not have any embedded profile... If it has an embedded profile, convert ("convert", not "assign") the document profile to your device profile...
At least... Be sure to proof the color to your final device (broadcast monitor, tv etc)... PS has the possibility to output your image via firewire if you need to proof the image before importing in FCP or DVSP...

  • PSD Corrupts While Open in Lightroom

My wife is running LR3.6 on OSX 10.7 and edits in CS5. The Lightroom catalog file resides locally on her MacBook Pro and the PSD is on a network share. The share is on a Mac mini server running 10.7 Server. The share is on a direct attached Drobo S. Drobo Dashboard reports the drive array as healthy. I sent a diag file to Drobo, and they confirm the drive is functioning normally. Further, I ran Disk Utility Verify Disk on the drive as well as the partition, and both checked out OK.
What we have been seeing is two fold. When we import NEF files from her D3S, we see an occasional file with random color banding across the pictures. The second issue is sometimes a PSD file will all of a sudden develop a random colored line across the image. Here is a link to the corrupt PSD file http://c.tro.pe/IGb7 and this is a link to a screenshot of the bad NEF import http://c.tro.pe/IGzj.
She will see the PSD open in LR and the line will show up. Perhaps this is LR updating itself based on what it sees on disk. Has anyone else experienced these issues? Thanks!

Check your RAM. I know on PC that there are free, bootable, standalone memory testing programs that can be found on the web. There must be something similar for the Mac, maybe even supplied by Apple.
    Added later: http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM
At any rate, you are seeing classic symptoms of some kind of hardware problem. Since it happens after import, the problem is, as Lee Jay says, in your disk drives or memory. Since your image is on the Drobo, that would be the drive to suspect. I don't know how good the Drobo diagnostics are, but you could try keeping your images on a different drive for a while to see if the problem continues. If it does, then the problem would likely reside in RAM.
Good luck. Intemittent hardware problems are hard to troubleshoot.

  • Corrupted layered photoshop file

Hi, I have had a random corruption of a layered ps file (no crash or surge that I know of). The finder icon displays correctly, but the file is now just flattened noise. A couple of questions: any recovery possible? and any notion why this would occur?
    Thanks

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.
