PSD CS4 Bounding Box Error

Have been printing to a cheap HP Laser no problems. Just purchased a Kyocera FSC5200DN, connected to a iMac with OSX 10.5.8 through ethernet.
When printing from PSD file will print, takes forever and get an error that reads:  Bad %%BoundingBox: comment seen!
Can open file in Preview or Illustrator and print just fine.
Anybody know a fix for this photoshop problem.
Thanks, Mark

Had the same error this morning. Had no problems with my HP Z6100ps and PSD CS4- then I updated the printer firmware which, I'm told, was grievously outdated. Tried printing a 24" x 36" poster from my mac tower, 10.5.8, and got the message as the file wouldn't stop spooling. The problem is also on the Apple forums and the HP forums with no solution, just the workaround to print to PDF, then print from Acrobat or Preview. That worked for me, but I hadn't considered opening the PSD file in Illustrator. Next time I'll give it a try.

  • Bounding Box Doesn't Match Object (Illustrator CS4)

I'm not sure if this is an error on my part or a bug, but for the last week or so, the bounding box for my objects hasn't actually matched the objects. This is really problematic when I try to transform the object using the bounding box handles.
On occasion, after I transform the object the bounding box will match it again and will transform correctly. Sometimes it will stay off. If it does reorient itself, undoing the transformations back the original size will cause the bounding box to reset back to it's mismatched state.
Things I have tried to resolve the issue:
    Reset the Bounding Box
Copying and pasting the shape to a different document
Starting a new document from scratch (I thought it was possible I corrupted the file)
Return Keyboard Shortcuts to the Default
    Restarting Illustrator
    Restarting my System
To my knowledge, my system hasn't been updated in the last week nor has anything new been installed. However, IT does push out maintenance so there is a possibiltiy that it was updated and I don't know about it. The only programs open while working in Illustrator are Bridge, Outlook 2007, IE8, Explorer, InDesign CS4, Word 2007, Photoshop CS4, Acrobat Professional 9, Dreamweaver CS4, PowerPoint 2007, Previewer and possibly FireFox 3.something (though not necessarily all at once - generally about 7 of the above listed). My system runs XP Professional SP3 with an Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.66GHz and 3.25 GB of RAM. The objects are not grouped, do not contain clipping masks, do not contain transparency masks and are not compound paths. They are simple paths/shapes, often rectangles.
I have included some pictures to better explain my issue. This first image indicates how the bounding box doesn't match the rectangle.
The second image shows the process of transforming the shape via dragging.
The third image shows the result.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Mr. Bugge:
Thank you for your response and I apologize for the delay in mine. I couldn't try all of the fixes immediately because I had to complete some job duties before I could tinker with this issue.
    Things that did not work:
    Closing Firefox
    Clearing the Preferences
    Moving the Preferences Folder
    Deleting Temp Files
Closing Other Adobe Programs (Including Bridge Running in the Background
Things I cannot do for various reasons:
    Re-installing Acrobat
Turning Off the Firewall (My Company Only Uses 1 Anyway)
Things I haven't tried yet but hope to try later:
Update Printer Definition or Change Default Printer
    Check for Corrupt Fonts
    Clear My Font Cache
    Things I learned:
The issue is most easily recreated by transforming an object to a smaller object. However, zooming in will realign the bounding box but it will only stay aligned when zoomed in. I find it very curious.
Even if I don't end up finding an answer, I do appreciate your time and help.

  • Bounding box tracelines in pdf

    Hello assorted gurus and geniuses.
Apologies if this query isn't in the most appropriate forum, or if it has been answered a hundred times before. I have looked and failed to find, honest!
I produce a regular magazine (on InDesign CS4) with a full page photo on the front page and the masthead placed over the top of it, in traditional mag design style.
The masthead was created in Illustrator, I've since made copies as .EPS, .JPEG, .PSD etc, and have the same problem each time.
In InDesign it looks fine. If I export the page to a hi-res jpeg it looks fine. But when I convert into a pdf (whether through Distiller, export or print commands) it always leaves a trace line from the bounding box of the masthead.
It's not a huge problem (in the past I've created a jpeg of the whole page and then substituted that for the InDesign page before making the pdf) but it's annoying the hell out of me! I've never encountered the same problem on any other page or with any other image.
Is there a setting somewhere I've missed? Is it a bug? Has anyone had this (or similar) problem before?
Any help, advice or pointers much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ally

Hello, you are sort of in the wrong area, this would be best answered in the Indesign forum, here.  However I can tell you, have a look at this post on Indesign Secrets here, and maybe for good measure this one too.
What happens when you export to PDF and use the smallest file size preset?

  • Bounding boxes appear in Acrobat after exporting from InDesign

Whenever I create outline fonts in my CS3 version of InDesign (I haven't upgraded to CS4 on this one program yet), I'm left with some very strange thin white lines surrounding some or all of the resulting letters that look suspiciously like bounding boxes. This never seems to occur if I don't create outline fonts, but simply embed the fonts and create a PDF using the Export command, so I have to believe the anomaly has something to do with this conversion process within the program. If I use illustrator CS4 to create outline fonts and then place them within my InDesign documents, I don't appear to have the problem. However, that's not a very desirable solution as it negatively impacts the fluidity of layouts and the ease of design, both of which I use in design for.
And yes, these small thin white lines do print, so the problem is far more than merely academic.
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue, and if so, how did you solve the problem (assuming you did)?

Sorry about that, I apparently forgot to attach the file; have done so now.
The method I'm using for creating outlines is simply to use the "Create Outlines" command under the Type menu within InDesign. Then I create my PDF files by using the Export command under the File menu and choosing the PDF/X1a option. 99% of the time I get perfect results, it's only when I try to make outline type that I encounter this problem. You'll clearly see the artifacts in question in the example attached.
I don't know whether or not the press would have printed these artifacts, as you suggest, since no printer has been willing to execute a file that shows any anomaly in the proof process. I can't say that I blame them.
Hopefully you will see what I'm talking about and can recommend a solution, though I like your idea of simply giving them a properly executed file and then telling them to get a life. It hasn't worked so far, as I unfortunately deal with a lot of Neanderthals around here, but I suppose it's worth putting forth again the next time this issue arises. It will.
By the way, no print house of my choosing is this far behind the curve, if at all. These cavemen are always printers who have long-standing relationships with my clients, and for whatever reason (generally lowest cost I'm sure), the clients think they hung the moon. We, of course, no otherwise, but it does it profit a designer to tell his client he or she is crazy for using a printer who is a decade behind the technology curve.
We cowboy up and seek solutions, eh?

  • CS2 Need to set text bounding box to snap to exact measurement, not em size and without leading

I am currently using CS2 working in a sign shop designing signs, banners and vehicle lettering.
When working with text I need to know the exact letter height, not the em and without the leading. I need it exactly the way it would measure if converting the text to outlines. The reason I need this information is that when I output the lettering to a cutter/plotter to cut vinyl media I need to know the exact measurement so I can nest my lettering on my media size. The media is typically 24" wide which gives me 22.5" of available space once the pinch rollers on the machine are considered. Pinch rollers are rollers that engage a knurled driving wheel and "pinches" the media between them and thus guides the media through the plotter. Of course, when using any media one must make the best use of it to avoid making scrap or using more than is needed for the job at hand. Converting text to outlines gives me that measurement.
One time awhile back I did a google search on this and found a one or two button fix that made the bounding box snap to the exact "ruler" height of the text. It worked great. But I got away from design work for a short period. When I returned I'd forgotten the process. Back when I did find it I never bookmarked or made a text file explaining the process and I'm ost in finding it again.
I don't know exactly how I worded the google search but the answer I was looking for came up on the first page. That's probably why I didn't feel the need to bookmark it or write it down. Now, I've googled dozens of different wordings for my question and get nothing. It's likely a nomenclature/jargon issue and I've yet to stumble on it again.
If anyone could help out I would so greatly appreciate it. As it is, when I get to the point that I need to know the exact ruler height of my lettering I convert my text to outlines. But then, as sometimes happens, I'll desire to change the font or try someting different but the text is not live so I'll have to start over with that line of lettering.
I sincerely hope my explanation of my questions makes sense to anyone who might be reading this.

Jacob Bugge, you are a blessing. This effect not only saves me time but avoids a lot of frustration when a client wants to change some copy or I commit a spelling error or have some other brain malfunction. Not to mention the sometimes hundreds of single words or number groups I must fit onto an artboard set to my available media space.
Option 2 is exactly what I was looking for and I'll remember it forever now as I've spent parts of the past week searching that answer only to hear over and over again, "You can't do that in Illustrator".
Thank you so much for your quick response!

  • How can I align a text object by the visible text and NOT by its bounding box?

    Illustrator CS4.
I am trying to align some text to the center of the artboard. The bounding box is bigger than the text, so when I try to align it to the artboard it doesn't actually center align the artwork as I need it to. The text is needing to be aligned with another text object, so I can't just center align the text and then align to the artboard (which would eliminate the bounding box problem, I think). To make matters worse, the text I want to align has a stroke.
The only way I know to currently align the text properly is to convert it to outlines. This is what I've done, but I need something better. I want to be able to have my illustrator file that has all editable text and then be able to make a separate identical file with all text converted to outlined paths. The only thing holding me back right now is that I can't get the exact alignment while everything is still as text.

The solution is to simple to believe and probably why you over looked it.
You make two text frames to exactly the height and width of the text. You position the text in the relative location and then group the text frames  then center that group on the artboard.
    Like such:
If you ever want to add text that should be no problem but you have to re center.

  • WFS Bounding Box question

    Hello,
I've integrated a WFS layer into an Oracle Maps application and am having errors when I try to do anything that involves a 'bounding box' type query, like zooming, panning etc. A "zoomToTheme()" function works fine as this does not use the bounding box.
Looking at the logs on the WFS server (GeoServer 2.1.3) the request has this form :
          <ogc:Filter>
            <ogc:BBOX>
              <ogc:PropertyName>CCW:sssi_polygon/CCW:the_geom</ogc:PropertyName>

              </gml:Box>
            </ogc:BBOX>
</ogc:Filter>However the WFS server doesn't like the "CCW:sssi_polygon/CCW:the_geom" PropertyName and raises this error :
       <ServiceException code="InvalidParameterValue">
          Illegal property name: CCW:sssi_polygon/CCW:the_geom
    Details:
org.geoserver.wfs.WFSException: Illegal property name: CCW:sssi_polygon/CCW:the_geomIs this something that MapViewer is doing wrong or the WFS server? Looking at other WFS examples it seems that MapViewer is wrong, however I am no WFS expert!
Is there anyway that this can be configured to just pass through "CCW:the_geom" or even "the_geom" instead?
Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

    Additional info :
This layer works perfectly well in the Map Builder and looking at the request made by Map Builder it appears to be doing it 'correctly' :

  • Bounding box and pdf export

    Hi all,
I'm using Illustrator CS4 and I have interest in the bounding box of a figure when I export it as a pdf. I'm using the crop area tool (also called ArtBoard, ToolShift+O) to set-up by hand the bounding box and then export the figure as a pdf. The problem is that I can observe spurious small white margins in the exported pdf. It seems that the bounding box is not perfectly set-up. Are you aware of this problem? Is there a work-around?
    Thank you

I don't think there is per se any problem nor is AI doing anything wrong. Sounds like your bog standard antialiasing/ transparency blending, if elements are not placed and shaped in such a way that their rasterized output perfectly coincides with whole pixels plus the usual issues with trapping, overprint etc., which Acrobat will obey based on its own settings and the properties defined in your AI document and which particularly become relevant if blending modes, partial opacity and raster effects are involved. You need to look into those things more than anything else and find the right combination of settings...

  • Bounding box of placed pdf 'reflecting' objects of parent Ai file... Not what I want!

As a self-taught Illustrator CS3 user I keep running into confounding issues.  The latest is this:
Artboard is US letter size.  I have a placed jpg image in the top half that extends beyond the artboard on one side.  Only want 3/4 of the jpg content
    in the final product.
    Some text at the bottom.
All in all a basic poster.
A clipping mask hides the part of the image that extends past the arboard.
I save this 'parent' Ai file as a copy PDF - no layers - no editing - no thumbnails ect.  Keep original Ai parent file for later editing.
I want to put this PDF into another ai document, but when I do, the bounding box extends past the pdf content out to
where the jpg image is in the parent Ai file.
Why?  Why can't I save a pdf that produces a stand alone img/doc without any apparent connection to its 'parent'?  Why can't this just happen without me having to crop the original jpg in photoshop to fit the parent Ai document perfectly and or somehow crop the image in the parent Ai.
Oh, and I have tried the crop tool and "make" crop area under the Object menu that contains only what is showing on the artboard.
    Same result.
PDF that in Preview shows correctly but when placed in another ai file somehow 'becomes' larger with a bounding box that includes much more than what is actually there.
    This is maddeningly stupid IMO.
Hope someone can be that patient professor of the design/Illustrator course that I can't afford, but that I need so desperately all the time.

    Why?
I don't know; I just chalk it up as another instance of the sloppiness that permeates Illustrator, and the convoluted multiple nested clipping paths so common in PDFs.
If I place the PDF as a Link, its bounding box corresponds to the clipping mask of the PDF.
If I place the PDF embedded, not linked, then I get the result you describe.
That arguably sort of makes sense in that, when you "place" (but embed) a PDF in Illustrator, you're really importing its content, including the nested clipping paths; and AI CS3 and prior always displays the bounds and edges of masked portions of clipping paths. When you "place" the PDF as a link, it's a preview that displays on the page, as if you were just linking a raster image.
In CS4 and CS5, Adobe finally fixed the silliness of displaying edges of masked portions of the content of clipping paths, so in those versions, it probably acts the way you want whether linked or embedded. (I only have CS3 on this laptop, so can't verify right now.)

  • Hide bounding box of a selected object

I tried using the feature request page but got an error after typing all this and thankfully I copied all of the text I entered just before hitting submit just in case the website decided to act stupid like it did (would have to retype all of the following and many sites fail at keeping that info or even bringing back the page you were on.. Very bad for users)
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Hide Bounding Box of selected objects
An option to turn this on/off under the view menu > Extras
Standardizing features like this across your Adobe apps (photoshop, illustrator) would make it more consistent since I was really looking hard to find a way to do this similar to the other apps I mentioned but InDesign failed to do this. It's very distracting trying to apply effects such as a drop shadow and not being able to see the result properly because of the bounding box. I hope this gets implemented ASAP.

After trying this again, it seemed to go through this time. Hopefully they get this implemented soon.

  • Is it possible to reset a layer's bounding box to exclude alpha?

I searched the forum before asking.... I'm not even sure how to ask this properly... I have imported several layers from a photoshop file. Many of the layers are in groups to give me some pre-comp options in AE. On import, I did NOT choose to retain the layer size (or whatever that third option is) — I brought the file in just preserving the layers themselves. The precomps (when placed inside my master comp) have a bounding box that is limited to JUST that PSD's group content. However, if I open the pre-comp itself, all of the layers bounding boxes are scaled/sized to the size of the comp (in this case, 640x960). This means that the smaller layer items (say, a hand) has it's anchor point in the middle of the comp and the handles are on the perimeter of the comp. SO, even though the hand layer is only 200x200px in total size, I've got all the negative space included in my bounding box.
What I'm wondering is this: do I need to move everything out of groups in my PSD in order to be able to see the relatively appropriate bounding box? Or, is there a way to "crop" the bounding box so that it finds the widest and tallest distances of a layer's content (excluding the alpha) and then trim/crop/reduce/adjust/resize itself accordingly?
I'm not sure how else to ask it. Sorry.

Okay... so, I had the import types reversed in my head. Importing as "Composition", will force the bounding box of every layer to fit the width/height of the comp itself. Importing with "Composition: Retain Layer Sizes" will actually crop the bounding box down to the layer's content.
I thought retain layer size meant that it kept the size of the canvas, regardless of transparency in the layer.
Still, it would be nice to know if there is anyway to address that scenario in AE....

  • PSD CS4 - Cursor is off center, help!

When I am using any tool (Smudge, Brush, Pen, etc.) in PSD CS4 (Mac 10.5.8) my tool is off center.
Here is an example: I have a blank white page and a brush tool (200 pixels, 100% hardness) with the color black assigned to it and I click in the center of the page to create a round dot. The dot is not on the spot where I clicked, instead it shows up below the point where I clicked, about 10 pixels off center. It's always 10 pixels off center no matter how big the brush.
It's impossible to work this way. I am at a total loss as to how to fix this problem. I've Googled and searched the Adobe Forums and can't find a solution.
Photo of my problem is attached.
Thank you from desperate, aka Dimitry

  • Unable to set bounding box using rectangle tool on small rectangles

I just upgraded to InDesign CC and keep getting an error message "Unable to set bounding box" when I try to create a small rectangle. The tool works fine when creating a larger rectangle -- it only gives me the error when creating a very small rectangle. Never had this problem in CS5.
    Anyone else run across this?

Check what your default stroke weight is. If the stroke weight is to wide for the size of the box you are trying to draw, you will get that message.
