PSD File Assiciations Fireworks CS3
Hi
Having lots of problems with Fireworks CS3 on PC (XP). Most
of these issues I can live with but the main problem is that I just
can't get it to associate with PSD files. After trying to do it
manually, the Fireworks icon shows on PSD files but when I double
click on the image icon it tries to open in Acrobat. When I
uninstall Acrobat it tries to open in Dreamweaver. When I uninstall
Dreamweaver it tries to open in an image viewer I have installed.
If I try to open it manually by going through the Folder
Options (or right click "Open With") route & click on
Fireworks.exe, it still tries to open in other applications
(Acrobat then Dreamweaver etc). Fireworks never shows in the list
of "Recommened Programs", so I need to browse for it.
Thanks for any help (Adobe & MS support could not help).
Can you not simple select it in File Type and choose
Fireworks and choose always use this program? That should work.

Opening cs3 psd file in Illustrator cs3
Hi,
I am trying to open a psd file in Illustrator cs3. The layers are patially flatened. The paths are lost.
Is this not a basic feature of the suite 3?
JPDI just downloaded a file from
http://rwillustrator.blogspot.com/2008/07/technique-emboss-text-effect.html
The file is small and is named emboss.ai
http://www.mordy.com/pics/emboss.zip
In it there is only a crop area.
I dont understand why there is a (plate image) thumbnail in the preview area when I click on the file before opening it. The file does not show any plate.

Unable to place Photoshop psd file in Illustrator CS3
Hi,
Can someone help please???
I am unable to place a Photoshop PSD file in Illustrator and be able to print the document correctly. The Illustrator file is saved as a ai file, both the document & PSD file are CMYK.
On screen the document looks fine but as soon as I have printed the document, some of file has not printed.
Do I need to have the Illustrator file as a eps file?
I used to use an old Photoshop version that had a Export Image option, which was great for something like this, but CS3 doesn't have this option.
Has anybody got any ideas what I am doing wrong? This seems to be an Illy problem, not Photoshop. You might want to check
with the gurus there, but perhaps a few details, like what printer
you're using and a few screenshots might help.

A frustrating problem I'm having importing PSD files into ID CS3
I am doing some page layouts for ads for magazines, and I've had a frustrating problem with Photoshop and InDesign CS3 for the longest time. Basically, I want to drag the PSD files we have already made for our products into my layout and use them as-is, but when I do so, they display as garbled ugly things in my InDesign CS3 layout, no matter what. The fix is for me to load the PSD, copy the contents, make a new file, paste the contents of the last other file, and save it as a new PSD file -- then things will work great. But this is a big pain in the buttocks and I'd like to fix the problem and eliminate this step.
You can see an example : http://twitpic.com/1kxp33 .
Basically, the image on the left shows the garbled image which has been dragged into the layout. It's just a normal PSD, single layer, but perhaps saved with some incompatibilty such as not being saved in "maximum compatibility mode" or having been saved with a color file attached. The pic on the right shows the correct image that I have manually resaved and imported.
Can anyone help me figure out why all of my PSD files are being garbled when I drag them into InDesign?I just did a test there and the Maximise Compatibility had minimal effect (ironically) on how the image looks in InDesign CS3 or in InDesign CS5
However, I did get a warning that the image was saved witout Maximise compatibility and it may have an effect on performance, nothing else.
Perhaps the other people are not on the same version of photoshop as you are, perhaps run the adobe updater and make sure you're all on the same version update for both apps.
Trashing preferences might clear up your photoshop images - hold down the three modifier keys bottom left corner of the keyboard when starting photoshop (sorry Peter I don't remember the Mac Combo )
Really hard to know why this is happening though. -
Can't save layered .psd files in Photoshop CS3
Hello,
I noticed yesterday that I can no longer save layered .psd files to any folder. What does get saved is only a generic file symbol.
I'm using a Dell 8200 computer, 1GB of RAM, IntelPentium4 processer, Windows XP Professional, and a Canon MP780 multiple function printer.
Please help.
Thanks,
George MasiIs it saved incorrectly, or is the problem just that the icon is the generic one. In other words, can you A) click to open the file from the desktop. And, b) if you can't click from the desktop, can you open the file from within Photoshop, and see the layers correctly.
If B works, and A does not, then this means your Windows has lost the association between PSD files and Photoshop. You can often correct this by right clicking the file, and choosing Open With, with the Always open with this program field checked. There is also a way to set the icons back up, but this is more complicated. -
Symbols/WinXP Common Library files in Fireworks CS3
I went into Common Library and into the WinXP to pick a few
symbols of a textfield and buttons, because I was going to layout a
design with form. But when I double click on it and edit the symbol
and make it change and click "done" it wont update the one on the
page. And besides I shouldnt have to edit the instance only a copy
of it. I'm sure symbols work like they do in Flash, so it wouldnt
be a good idea to edit the master anyway, even though its
associated with my PNG file. But even when I edit it, it wont show
the changes.Fr0ntier wrote:

What are you trying to edit? Most of the editing is done via
the Symbol
Properties panel. If you are trying to scale it, you do not
need to
double click, just use the Transform tool.

(psd) File Compatibility from CS3 to PS-6.1
Good Day,
I am hoping that this is as simple as using "maximum compatibility" in CS3.
I have a collegue who is still hanging on to PS 6.1 (erg!!) and need to know if I can send him CS3 (psd)s without too much heartache??
Yeah, I know! Not too much room to complain when I'm still on CS3 I just can't reconcile the cost/benefit offset. Yet!
Thanks in advance
Kind Regards,
Silicon9Noel,
Wow! You are totally awesome, and 100% correct.
This post should have stated version 6.0.1, not 6.1
Thank you for pointing out the .0 difference.
Kindest Regards, and good luck with the OCD meds.

Apple is working on a fix, but in the meantime you probably need to find the corrupt font that is triggering it.

Best way to open a .psd file in FW CS5
Hello!
I'm new to FW and I recently found out about an ongoing issue of opening .psd documents in FW.
Say, I know that it's generally recommended to use adjustment layers in PS, but in FW they won't open. So maybe then its best to avoid them? Also I know that when I open a .psd file in FW I get a small window where I can choose if I want to have the editability or the appearance...(1st and 2nd options out of 4). Which one is better? Or its a trial and error thing and for each specific file, its different? Maybe if I want to use a flatten image in the live site, it would be a best practice to simply flatten the .psd file into .gif, .jpg or .png before opening it in FW to avoid the issue? Of course, I mean if I don't need layers etc. And in that case...which format would be the best out of 3? .png because its more related to FW or it doesn't really matter? Another thing is...PNG24 (flattened one)-is it a good idea to use it on live sites or its best to use .gifs and .jpgs?
Also if you could provide links to more info concerning the abovementioned issues, I'll appreciate that!
Thanks in advance!I have posted some details at blogs.adobe.com/sarthak/2010/09/opening-psd-files-in-fireworks.html for more information. I think it is more of trials as you seem new to Fireworks app.
Incase you feel comfortable sharing the psd file, someone might give you the best option to open within Fireworks.

File compatibility between cs3 and cs5
Hi,
What are the compatilibity issues between Photoshop CS3 and CS5? Can they be used together without much (if any) issues?
Thanks. They can happily coexist on the same system, as long as you've got the disk space. Photoshop has always been like that.
You'll only be able to run one at a time, at any given instant, though.
Regarding file compatibility, I don't how much it's required to open a file in Photoshop CS3, but the newer version does offer a "Maximize Compatibility" preference setting for saving .psd files. On occasion I've opened .psd files in Photoshop CS3 saved by CS5 (using the aforementioned setting) and I haven't seen any issues at all.

Fireworks CS3 & Illustrator CS3
I'm not sure if this is more an Illustrator problem or a
Fireworks issue, but since I can post here but can't log into the
Illustrator forum, I'll start here.
I have illustrations created in Illustrator. Black and white
images, and I want the white to be transparent, or rather see-thru
since I don't mean transparency as in opacity. What I want is for
the background to show through the "white" portions of the black
and white illustrations. So, if you have a black circle with a
white triangle in the middle, and put it on a green background, the
black circle will be black and the "white" triangle will be green.
Hopefully, that clarifies what I am trying to do.
So, in Illustrator CS3, I take that illustration and use
"exclude" and "expand" to apply it to the illustration. Seems to
work fine there. If I create a solid-colored square and move it
behind the illustration, the "white" areas show the square's color
instead of white.
Now, when I open that illustration in Fireworks CS3, I get a
black solid image. No paths where the "white" areas should be. Just
a solid black area.
Now, if I take that original illustration, open it in
Illustrator 5.5(!), use "exclude," save and then open that modified
file in Fireworks 1.0(!), it works just fine. I can also open that
Illustrator 5.5 file in Fireworks CS3 and it works fine.
Mind you, the illustrations are more complex than a white
triangle in a black circle. But, if Illustrator 5.5 and Fireworks
1.0 can handle them, the CS3 versions ought to be able to handle
them as well.
Since I would expect that the CS3 versions should be able to
do the same things that the much older versions can do, I can only
assume (and hope!) that I must be doing something wrong. I would
hate to have to save all my Illustrator CS3 files down to
Illustrator 3 files (since CS3 can't save to Illustrator 5), open
them in Illustrator 5.5 and "exclude," then resave them and then
finally open them in Fireworks CS3, especially since that involves
using two Macs, since the Intel Macs don't run Classic. Seems like
I should be able to go direct from Illustrator CS3 to Fireworks
CS3.
So, what am I doing wrong?Found it! Compound Path instead of Exclude.

Opening PSD File - Not Enough Memory
I created a sequence of images from Particle Illusion in a PSD format. When I open one of the images in Photoshop (CS3), it opens - no problem. When I try to open it in Illustrator CS3, I get the message "Not enough memory to place the file".
On Windows XP 64, opening PSD files with Illustrator CS3 does not seem to work.
What you can do to resolve this issue is to save the file as PNG in Photoshop. That can be opened in Illustrator and transprency is preserved.

I don't do animations in PS or IR, but if you like, send me
the file
and I'll see if I can figure something out.

Photoshop CS3 shuts down after opening a PSD file with layers
Hello, I have met a problem with Photoshop CS3 (Windows XP SP2, no network printer) - after opening a PSD file with layers (saved with CS2) Photoshop shuts down. No error message.
Can some of you help me? (The only software that I have installed after Creative Suite CS3 is Corel X4. I have installed no upgrades of CS3.)> I have installed no upgrades of CS3
You should!
Even if it doesn't help here you should. -
Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file. The error message reads "cannot complete your request because of a program error" -- it is a very large file (I have been saving it all along) and I had just "flattened layers" and went to open up a new, blank photo file when it shut down. Is there anyway to get this file to open? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (p.s. after reading a couple of similar threads, I have a feeling it's hopeless. But I'd also like to know WHY this might have happened!) Thanks in advance!
Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for sharing the article--I did panic. Here are the details of my system:
Model: HP p7-1247c
Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon HD Graphics
Installed Memory: 8 GB (7.48 usable)
System Type: 64-bit
Windows 7 Home Premium
I am using Photoshop CS3. It seems that I can work on photos and save them. But I am unable to open them back up. I have tried saving the files as psd and tiff with the same result. The error message is: "cannot complete your request because of a program error"
The interesting thing is that I can open up InDesign and "place" the psd file within InDesign (then export and save as a jpeg). So I don't think the files are necessarily corrupted. I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it last night, but there's no change.
If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or, should I repost my question with this more complete info? Thank you!
