PSD file to FCP

Good Morning all,
I have run into a problem that I have been researching on the net and have found others with similar problems but no solutions. I have made a layout for a DVD menu in Photoshop which will consists of a background, text, and basic boxes. The PSD files are imported perfectly in layers and I am able to manipulate each layer individually which is great; however, my final product is outputted a bit blurry. I tried tweaking some settings a bit and was able to make the text a bit more legible but it's still not as crisp and clear as my original.
I am using a canvas size of 720*480 72dpi in Photoshop so that I can see action safe guidelines and so that it import into FCP in the right places on screen. What else can I try tweaking to get this looking as crisp and professional as my original. The final product will be imported into DVDSP and I want to be able to play this on a computer and a TV.
P.S. I did export and put this on a DVD to see the end result on a TV and I get the same image on the TV as I did on the computer.
Thanks

Update: I have gotten this project to export from FCP to QT with no problems and retains it's sharp and crisp images (even the text). Now when I burn it to DVD the text has a tiny glow around the letters. Almost as if there is an image of the letters not perfectly aligned with the letter giving it a glow of some sort. Everything else on the menu looks the way it is supposed to.
Any thought on how I can fix this in DVDSP? I figured out the reason it lookes so terrible before was because it was being compressed by FCP on export. I took the compression off and got my menu with effects to look sharp and crystal clear. I'm guessing the reason the letters are slightly off when burning to DVDSP is because of the compression but how can I set this up so that the text looks clearer?

  • Transparency Issues with PSD files in FCP 7

I'm having some weird file layer transparency issues with FCP 7. I'm working on a project that's made up entirely of graphics drawn in Photoshop CS5. They Photoshop settings were done to match an HDTV 1080i (16:9) sequence in FCP. In FCP, the pixels were set to square, field dominance to none, frame rate to 29.97 and compressor is Apple ProRes 422.
I exported my PSD files out of Photoshop, with each layer being exported to its own file. In general, things were fine, but there were a few files where you could see the outline of the character against the background, but mind you that this is only visible once the video is rendered out in the FCP timeline. Nothing is visible in Photoshop, nor is it visible while viewing from the Browser in FCP. I told this to the artist and he went back and made corrections, making sure everything was on a transparent background, but the result was still the same - once I rendered the graphics out in FCP, these edge lines were visible.
I then went back into Photoshop, opened all the files that were giving me trouble, clicked on the "foreground color" and changed it to a color other than white, then back to white and hit ok. That seemed to work - even when rendered out, I was getting no artifacts, until I tried enlarging the graphics over 100%.
Also, with some of the same graphics, I was trying to layer them so that a guy was in the foreground with other people and a van behind him in the background. Once again, no problem in Photoshop, but once brought into FCP, the background people were actually being displayed over the main foreground character.
I'm pretty baffled - what to do? I'll attach a photo of the weird lines around the characters. It might be hard to see at this size, but if you download and enlarge it to 300% or so, you'll see what I mean.

Just saw that Adam's original post was an older one.  Will keep this here anyway to maybe help the most recent poster.

Adam, did you try what David said about pointing to the root folder?  Did that work?
When I copy the SD card, I name a new folder on my hard drive something specific, like Smith Wedding.  Then I copy everything inside the SD card to that new folder.  The first level inside my new folder now has folders for
    AVF_INFO
    PRIVATE
and on down from there.  When you open Log and Transfer, point it to the Smith Wedding folder (of course whatever you have named yours).
ClipWrap2 also works great to convert the files beforehand if you want.
What camera are you using?  I have the Sony NX30 and it was giving me fits because the .mts files don't ingest if the clips are longer than 11 min. My problem is that I'm still on FCP 6.0.6.  I think 7.0.3 fixed that.  But I did find enough work-arounds to keep the camera.

  • How can I get rid of "Jagged Edges" on the text in .jpg/.psd file in FCP?

    Hi guys,
I am running FCP5.1 and I have a still image (.jpg) of a consumer product with the name of the product and the description on it.
When I view it in the viewer or canvas, I see jagged edges around the name, description and the product.
Even when I use the FCP text tool, I still see it.
I even see jagged edges when I import a .psd file (photoshop doument) with text on it into FCP.
It is getting very frustrating for me at this point.
Can someone help me out please?
    Thanks,
    Zia

No need to double-post... most questions are answered pretty quickly...

  • Importing psd files into FCP

Every time I create a layered file in photoshop with fx like bevel and imboss, gradient overlay, inner glow etc, and import it into FCP, it shows up as a layered file (sequence) but does not show any of the fx (eg. text is plain white when it should be blue, no bevel and emboss just completely flat, no drop shadow, nothing). Can somebody help me? Pleeeeeease!

You need to Rasterize text elements and Layer Effects such as Bevel, Emboss and Shadows in Photoshop, before you import them to FCP.

  • FCP 7 - PSD file in BIN shows diff than layer properties

steps to reproduce this issue, please confirm you have it too before I submit a bug report:
    1. FCP 7
    2. Photoshop CS5 Extended - setup iPhone 4 size file (640 x 960 at 326 ppi)
    3. create multiple layers
    4. import the PSD file into FCP 7
    5. setup BIN columns to display file resolution
    6. notice that BIN shows 640 x 960
    7. double click PSD file - shows in TL
    8. navigate to PSD in TL, pick any layer
    9. right click Item Properties, Format - will show at 640 x 964
Ive tried recreating a PSD from scratch - a test scratch file if you will, and the problem persists.
Tried restarting this Mac - persists.
Tried software update - there's nothing left to update

sorry I might have misread your post. To clarify: yes the sequence and PSD files are both SHOWING IN FCP as 640 x 960
The issue came to light as after importing additional a layers, I noticed that they appear wider when 2x clicked on from the TL versus the BIN.
Further, the layers will also "stretch" to the layer's size even though the (text) data within the layer is far smaller than the layer itself. This "stretching" phenomena I swear Ive seen before somewhere years ago... cant quite recall the details.
The layers in my PSD mostly only have text on them, the text bounding box will stretch to layer boundaries as if the matte background werent part of the layer. This behavior is also incorrect, the matte matters....

  • Black background of .psd file appears dull green?

Hi, after importing a .psd file into FCP its black background appears dull green...any suggestions as to how to prevent this? ...to make the background black in FCP like it was in Photoshop?
    thanks

You're lucky that black/green was the only problem you saw. CMYK and Grayscale graphics can cause headaches in FCP. Clients graphic departments send me PSD's all the time and the first thing I do when I get them is check to make sure they are RGB.

  • Aspect ratio of PSD files

I'm building PSD files in NTSC 4:3 aspect ratio but when I import them to FCP, they look horizontally squashed. Is that just a nuance of FCP or did I do something wrong? I'm using the images for a broadcast commercial.

  • Is it best to import images as .psd files or .tif or another format?

Hi, when working in the default 1080i is it best to import .psd files or go through the trouble of rendering the .psds to .tifs in Photoshop, to then import the .tifs??
It seems HDTV 1080p .psds have a different aspect ratio -- and, the black background of the .psd file I've imported into FCP appears dull green rather than black. Is there a reason for this? .tifs seem fine...thanks

If your not going to do any individual layer effects or animation then TIFF's would be generally easier and faster to work with. If you are gong to do some effects and layer animation you should do that in Motion then bring the Motion project into FCP.
My Opinion, My Two Cents, That's might be what its worth.

  • Using PSD files . . . HELP

I have a psd file with a transparent background. I have built it video template and pixel correction in photoshop. I need to know how to use it. I place it in the timeline. If i select it I then get a additional tab in the timeling for just that image. . I have figured out that I need to make duration changes in the tab. However, when I place it in the time line again (I need to use it several time) I can't change the duration of the second without changing the first usage, them both instances do not show in the viewer.
I have Tom Wolsky's FCE 2 book but can't find where it explains how to control a psd file. If some one could help me out it would be great. Even just directing me to the correct section of the book would help greatly.
    Thanks

If you need to manipulate the individual layers of the image in FCP, PSD will work fine. But if you don't, then use a TIFF file. Much more convenient to work with. Plus a TIFF file format will maintain it's layer editability in Photoshop and still show any applied layer effects in FCP without having to rasterize the layers.
For PSD, import the file, then double-click it in the Browser to load it into the Viewer. Set the duration (upper left hand TC window) prior to adding it to the Timeline.
Once it's in the Timeline, if you double-click it, it will open in it's own Sequence. To open it in the Viewer instead, right-click on the image and select "Open in Viewer."

  • PSD files crashing FCPHD?

I seem to having problems with FCPHD crashing when i try exporting 2 video tracks to DV format when one of the tracks is a photoshop (psd) document.
Here is what i'm doing: Using the video generator (shapes: rectangle) i generate a rectangle in the video 2 track and use the chroma keyer to make the white rectangle in the center transparent. This leaves a black frame with a transparent, rectangular center.
Behind this track, in video track 1, i drop in my psd file and proceed to move it about (Ken Burns style).
Once i have the effect i want (The psd photo magnifying and/or moving about behind the black frame) i try and export both tracks as a DV file. I consistently get an error message saying something to the effect "xxxxxxxxxxxx file cannot be found" ("xxxxxx" is a bunch of numbers ... looks like a reference to a render file) and i'm left with two button choices, either "cancel" or "search". Searching is futile, the file doesn't exist. So i click cancel and, without fail, FCPHD (version 4.5) exports then crashes.
When i do this same technique but use a DV file instead of a psd file in video track 2, no problems. But use a psd in video track 2, boom, it crashes.
Does anybody have any ideas? Are there certain settings i should look out for when saving my psd files? None of the psd files have multiple layers (They are flattened) and the dpi is usually 300 so i could zoom in real close with good clarity. Other than that, i believe these are standard psd files.
Or is there a better, more stable format i should export into?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Paul

Yeah, kind of weird. I use PS files in 99% of my projects and always check they are properly formatted and such, so I don't know what to attribute the problem to. Can't really even say for sure it has anything to do with the PS files, and I don't remember that ever happening to me in the past. I also tried a couple export formats with the same result each time until relaunching FCP.
    Good luck, happy editing

  • PSD file opens in viewer

Maybe simple...how do you get your PSD file to reveal layers in sequence and not in the viewer?

If your file is a layered PSD, it should appear in FCP's Browser as a sequence, and double-clicking it (in the Browser) should open that sequence in the Timeline.
(If you've placed the PSD into another sequence, double-clicking it in that sequence should open up the PSD as a sequence too)
But I sense neither is working for you?

  • Psd files keep opening

    Hello
Does anyone know if there is a way of preventing FCP from opening nested or psd files when you double click on them in a sequence. I am trying to edit the motion of the files. I know I can drag the file from the sequence into the preview monitor but I could switch off the open a new tab option it would speed up my workflow that's all. Thanks to anyone who replies.
    Regards
    Dan

Option click the nest, or select it in the sequence, and type on the return key.

  • Operation Not Allowed: psd files

Short version: I changed psd file modes to 16 bit.
I have had problems with my Photoshop files since I upgraded to FCP5 in Oct or Nov. I did everything suggested in these discussions and nothing worked.
I took a break from psd files and came back here to look again for another solution because I just knew it had to be something simple, some kind of setting. I followed the suggestions AND ONE FINALLY WORKED (so far).
Someone said they changed the psd file mode from 8 bit to 16 bit. Wah-lah! It's been working for me so far. Hope this helps someone esle.

One big problem..if you change it to 16bit FCP wont let you play with the psd layers

  • PSD Files Size, how big is to big

We are creating some scrolls using PSDs and adding motion to them. We have one scroll that is 720X20,016 pixels and it keeps crashing FCP. Our PSD Files that ar 720X10,000 work fine. Any way to get a big scroll (20,000 pixels long) to work?

    For the pure research possibilities,
Take your 720x10,000 file that already has text etc and create a series of new files from it in 100 pixel increments using rescale or expand canvas.
You should have files that start at 720x10,100 and go up in 100 pixel increments 10,200/ 10,300 etc
Test them one by one until the system crashes.
    Results?

  • PSD files canvas size changes?

    Hi all,
Working in FCP (6.0.4) and noticing the importing of certain PSD files don't maintain their original canvas size. I need PSDs in order to have a transparent background but don't understand why this happens. Older versions seemed to handle this but for some reason it's doing this and not sure if it's playing up.
    thanks guys
    Chuck

Your PSD graphics need to be contained in a file that has the same dimensions as your video.
If your graphics came from another source, such as a print ad, they will most likely not be the same as your video.
Make a blank Photoshop document. Either from the presets for video available in PS or one of your own. The presets are available by going to File > New and choosing from the Preset selection button.
You can set options for transparent background etc, here too.
Copy the content of the original graphics file and paste it into the new PSD that you just created.
Use the Transform controls to adjust size and position as required.
Aspect ratio controls are in the "Image" menu bar item of Photoshop, should you need them.
