Psd files disappearing in CS4 Photoshop

I've been working with psd files in CS4 and after saving once, everything seems normal. After working on a file more and trying to save, I get a message that it can't be saved because the file name is not valid. If I close the file without saving and try to reopen, it says I don't have permission to open the file. I've tried doing a SaveAs under a different name with same results. Even worse is that the files I thought I had saved previously simply disappear from the folder they were in if I do the SaveAs step under a similar, but different name (like adding -1 to the name.) They don't appear anywhere on the computer that I can find. Any ideas on what's causing this? I'm running an up-to-date Windows 7, 64-bit. CS4 also is a current 64-bit.

Hi!
I never did quite figure out what the exact culprit was, but because of my work, my employer--under the recommendation of the IT department, basically wiped my computer clean. On top of that, there had been a number of "permissions" that were locked down on every workstation due to other people on the network not being careful or particular about downloading files and overloading our server. (I wasn't saving outside of my own workspace at the time, but it didn't seem to matter). Special permissions were written just for my user and basically I was opened up to admin status. It took the combination of both the hard drive wipe and the permissions to set things back in order. The only sad part is that anything I had orgnized to my own liking such as brushes, fonts, tool bars and locations, etc-- all set back to default. It was worth it, though, to get things saving again. They also upgraded me from 32bit to 64bit. Still waiting on the memory upgrade, but things seem to be working MUCH better.
The 2 things that made the most sense to me (but who really knows!) are 1. Photoshop seemed to need a reboot. But uninstalling and reinstalling it wasn't enough. 2. Permissions, even though saying you have admin access (network or no network-- I run across this on my home computer) seem to get wiggy once in a while and need to be reset. Not sure why or how the signals get crossed. However, I am not IT and don't pretend to know the ins and outs-- I know the software only. ALso, doing print files for things like banners, etc-- those can get pretty huge based on the necessary resolution and how in depth the client wants to go on the artwork. That being said, file size didn't seem to make a difference in my case. I would be curious to know if anyone finds a solid answer to why this is happening. It doesn't seem to matter which version of the Creative Suite you have because you are working on CS5 and I currently have CS4.

  • An issue whereby Photoshop .PSD files disappear when saved to a network file share

It has been reported and reproduced by Support, an issue whereby Photoshop .PSD files disappear when they’re saved to a network file share.
Upon initial investigations Support have observed the following behaviour when saving a Photoshop file.
The document is initially saved as a new file on the file share.
The original  .PSD file is deleted on the file share.
The newly created file is renamed to the same name as the original file.
An issue often arises when steps 1 and 2 complete however step 3 fails. When a file is reported by users as having disappeared, the new file created in step 1 can be renamed from  .00_ to the original *.PSD file name on the server as the *.00_ files are normally hidden by the desktop operating system. This allows people to see and open the file from both PC’s and MAC’s using AFP and SMB protocols.
A related issue often reported by users is that they receive an error message “Could not save as” when trying to save a .PSD file. Troubleshooting the issue confirms that the user is able to save the file if they perform a “Save As” operation in Photoshop.
From the reported problems and observations there is clearly an issue with how Photoshop performs a file save operation further exacerbated by the fact the process doesn’t fail safely.

Sounds like you're hitting one of the known MacOS filesystem bugs - worst when working with SMB volumes.
Apple knows about this, and we are pursuing workarounds to the OS bugs.
Yeah, if you value your files, don't save directly to servers, especially on MacOS.

In Windows 8, how can I see an image of the psd file instead of the Photoshop icon?

There are a number of third party solutions for this.  I just use Bridge, so can't recommend one in particular.

  • I can't open a .psd file in Illustrator CS4 after upgrading to Yosemite

I can't open a .psd file in Illustrator CS4 after upgrading to Yosemite.

Can you open any file, i.e. jpeg, etc.? Have you installed the Apple legacy Java: Java for OS X 2014-001? I'm guessing you have because you wouldn't be able to open PS at all without it. But have to ask.

  • Placing PSD files in Indesign CS4 error message

I recently upgraded at work to CS4 and leopard. Here is my problem everytime I try to place a photoshop file off of my network filesever I recieve this error "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it." This happens with every psd that I try to place and I know that these files are not use. The photoshop files are CS3 files. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

I just experienced the same situation with a client's network, the main difference was CS3 and OS 10.5.6. The situation arose after installation of Leopard and subsequent software updates. l believe the IT person who did the updates used migration, but I'm not positive about that.
Anyway, here's how I solved it: As a test, create a new user in System Preferences/Accounts (call the new user Test User) and give it admin privileges. Log in as testuser. Connect to your server. Open InDesign, create a new document, and try to place a tiff or psd file from the server into the new document. If this works, you've isolated the problem to your normal (previous) user account.
If this is indeed the problem, while logged in as testuser, click the padlock in System Preferences/Accounts, enter your password, and proceed to delete the corrupted account...
It will give you 3 options: pick the first one, which is delete user and archive user folder as a disk image within a folder named Deleted Users.
Now you can create a new user (you can name the new one the same as you had for the old corrupted one), give it admin privileges. Log out of test user and log back in with the new user you just created.
You can now open up the old user disk image in the Deleted Users folder, and drag items back into the new user folder you've just created. I would only drag the contents of Music, Pictures and Movies at this point.
    Important:
Do not drag the contents of your Users/olduser/Library folder into you new user folder. More than likely this contains the source of the problems that got you into this trouble in the first place.
The biggest pain about this process is recreating your font lists/locations. If you use Suitcase Fusion, open Suitcase first, then drag your favorite fonts into Suitcase. If you use another font manager, you're going to have to recreate your font list as you did the first time you installed them.
When you open each of your regularly used programs, they will act as if you're opening them for the first time (with the exception of asking for serial number/registration info), and new preferences will be created in your User/~/Library/Preferences folder.
    Good luck,
    Dave Moeller

  • Can you link an imported psd file in Illustrator CS4 instead of embedding?

Seems that in CS4 the default is to embed a psd file. I have been unable to find a way to link if I want to. CS3 seems to default to linking which I prefer.

    In Illustrator
    File > Place
select your file but don't hit OK
at the bottom of the window you will see 3 options:
    "Link"
    "Template"
    "Replace"
    check link and hit Ok.

  • Help! My .psd files do not have photoshop icons, but generic icons from windows.

Now that I've installed my new windows CS6, all my .psd files have the 'generic icons' windows give to files they don't recognize.  Everything else has normal icons (i.e. Illustrator files) but the Photoshop files are blank.  This is true whether I'm on any type of viewer format, i.e. details, thumbnails,  Can someone help me?

    Hi Eelswood,
Please try changing the file association for .psd files.
Right click on the file > Select 'Open with' > 'Choose default pogram' and then select 'Photoshop' in the list of programs.
Make sure 'Always use the selelcted pogram to open this kind of file' is checked at the bottom of the window.

    Hi,
In Bridge cs6 look under the Bridge preferences (Ctrl+K or Cmd+K) and then under File Type Associations, where you can choose the applications to open files from bridge.

  • Photoshop cs4 - Can't open .psd files in Bridge

I cannot open .psd files in Bridge, only .jpg and .tif, as far as I know.  The .psd files are flattened--no layers.  What's wrong?

Generated in PS cs4...always starting with a .jpg, working on it, then saving as .psd.
I open Bridge, navigate to the file I want to work on.  The round icon that is for opening files in Camera Raw is grayed out.  It IS available for .jpg and .tif files.  If I go to the File menu in the upper left, there is no option to open the .psd file in Bridge.  If I just click Open, the file will open in the default program I use for quickly viewing all photos (Irfanview).
Thinking also about the reply from 2.rob...
I hope I don't need to designate .psd files to always open in Photoshop in order to get this to work.  I have all photo types set to Open for quick viewing in Irfanview, which I like very much. Often I want to look at a .psd file w/o opening Photoshop, which takes a while to load.

  • Repairing damaged adobe photoshop .psd files?

One of my project folders got deleted in a freak accident. I won't go into it, but I recovered one of the .psd files using a commercial undelete program (Fast File Undelete from DTI Data). It didn't work (go figure) and whenever I try to open the .psd file photoshop (7.0) shows a message box that says, "There was a problem reading the layer data. Read the composite data instead?" When I click the Read Composite Data button another box shows that reads, "Could not open '[file name]' because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop."
It seems kind of like it is very close to working, because there is even a thumbnail. I also recovered a handful of .jpg's and .tga's, which are also broke. Does anyone know of a utility that could attempt to repair a .psd, .tga or .jpg?

    SECOND FREE SOLUTION:
Sometimes Photoshop is adding a few bytes in the beginning of the file when the file is saved, and then the same Photoshop is giving an error and complains about that files... All you have to do is to delete that unnecessarily group of bytes.
Assuming that you already know what is a HEX editor and how to use it I'll write here a few steps you can do before opening a "corrupt" PSD file:
1 - Make a back-up (copy) of the file before making any changes.
2 - Open the "corrupted" file in an usual HEX editor (NOT text editor!) and look for such groups of character just in the beginning: 8BPS and after a few bytes 8BIM another group of bytes and again 8BIM.
3 - This succession should be respected strictly: 8BPS ... 8BIM ... 8BIM. These groups should be very close to each other and it's easy to find them.
4 - Delete all bytes before 8BPS group (Shift+Delete) and save the file... =)
5 - Open it in Photoshop and Enjoy.

  • Photoshop CS5 crashes when opening CS3 psd files?

I just upgraded my Mac Pro 1,1 to OSX 10.6.4 and Photoshop CS5 and have installed the latest updates. When I try to open psd files created in CS3, Photoshop crashes. The files still open OK in CS3. Any fixes? Here are a few lines of the crash report...

Nothing to do with CS3 files - you're hitting a common MacOS font bug.
Apple is working on a fix, but in the meantime you probably need to find the corrupt font that is triggering it.

  • Can't view thumbnails in cs4 photoshop or bridge

    Hi,
I can't view cs2 or DNG files thumbnails in CS4 photoshop or bridge. I'm using vista 64 home premium and recently had to reinstall cs4 on a new disc. It worked fine before on my old disc but now it doesn't.
I've searched through the various topics on this, I've only got one copy of the correct file (Camera Raw.8bi) in the correct folders, CS4 is shown in the bridge / edit / prefs / file type associations.
I can click on a file and it opens in bridge but I just can't see the thumbs.
One point though - the DNG convertor states that it needs camera raw v 7.1 or later so maybe that's why I can't read the dng file (even though I can open them) but it doesn't explain why I can't see the cr2 files.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    Doug

If purging the cache doesn't work, the ACR plug-in (which is called Camera Raw.8bi) may be in the wrong place.
    It should be in:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
There is another plug-ins folder in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\ Adobe CS3 folder. If the ACR plug-in is in there, delete it.

  • File displaying different from Photoshop to Illustrator

I have a simple chalkboard background I made in Photoshop and I'm importing into Illustrator. My issue is the file displays completely different from Photoshop to Illustrator. See image below.
I've had this happen to other files but this one is so incredibly different, I can't understand what's happening and I can't manage the design with it being this different. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Rachel

Thanks again Monika. I can't figure this out. The color management is all synchronized among all my Adobe applications. Yes the file is in layers and when I view the JPG in Photoshop, it looks as it should. It's only when I bring it into Illustrator does it look like that. I opened up a new Illustrator doc and placed the same JPG (as well as dragged the PSD file directly from the Photoshop window into Illustrator) and it looks better and more like it should. My other doc was a new doc too so I'm not sure what happened. At any rate, I can't explain what happened and I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again.
    Thanks for your help!
