PSD files get destroyed

Hi, I'm using Aperture 2.1.2 for only a few days now, and Photoshop CS4. When I bought Aperture, it said that it was able to handle PSD files. Now, here's my problem:
1. I drag (or import, no difference) a PSD file (made with Photoshop CS3) with all kinds of layers into a project.
2. Everything looks fine in Aperture.
3. I rightclick the image and use the "edit with" command, selecting Photoshop CS4.
4. The image is opened in Photoshop - and all layers are gone, and it's color inverted. As all the layers are gone (including the color correcting ones), I can't simply hit "invert colors".
So I tried to rescue at least some important pictures and dragged them out of the Aperture window onto my desktop. They are not PSD files anymore, but JPEG files - at the exact same resolution and much smaller dimensions than the original PSD.
Is there a solution to this?
Cheers,
Gero

Aperture never sends the original file to an external editor - instead, it makes flattened TIFF or PSD copy and sends that out instead.

I've no idea why the colours are inverted if it looks OK in Aperture, but you will lose all the layers automatically.

If you just drag an image out of the Aperture window all you'll get will be a 'Preview' - a JPEG copy of the file. To get the original file out try Export>Export Master...
Is there a solution to this?
If you want to edit you original PSD in Photoshop, you'll need to use referenced Masters (read the fine manual, one of the Aperture books or do a search). You will then be able to right-click, choose 'Reveaql in Finder', open the file in Photoshop and edit it. After you save the file (not save as, but a regular save) you should see it's thumbnail in Aperture update.

P.S. At all times, if you want to work with layered files in Aperture you need to make sure that Photoshop is set to save a composite preview in it's files, or you won't see the image accurately in Aperture.

  • Importing a .psd file - getting weird effects with drop shadows!! HELP!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to import a psd file as my site and then animate each page.
I have each page set up as a different layer and am importing each page as a movie clip so  i can animate each one separately.
The problem is that i have some images on each page that have drop shadows ( i have flattened these in photoshop so there is no longer the blending options layers attached). When flash imports all the layers it obviously has all of them visible at the same time initially.
When i then go through and separate each page to show at different points in the timeline, the images with drop shadows are now showing the image that was underneath it on import, instead of the drop shadow. Difficult to explain, but if you imagine a page with a square in the middle. That square has a drop shadow along two edges which is a slight shading. On a different page (on the layer underneath) there is just a big image of the sea (could be anything). When i import them, the page with the square is sitting directly on top of the page with the image of the sea. I separate these in the timeline so they show at different points, but when it's just the page with the square showing (the page with the sea isn't showing at this point), instead of the nice shading for the drop shadow, in it's place is the thin part of the image of the sea that was initially under the shading for the drop shadow....
Can anyone suggest what is happening and why, and how to quickly fix it in Flash. It took me AGES to import the whole site and all the pages, but now all the movieclips are completely useless because all the drop shadows are messed up with the images that were importing underneath them???!
I'm in a real rush here too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • CC2014 - PSD Files get saved in awkward locations

    Win7 x64, CC 2014.1.0 (Build 20140730.r.148 x64)
This one's weird and extremely annoying.
When I specify a folder where I want my PSD file to be saved, Photoshop seems to save it in one of the locations from which I have opened files previously (or locations I have saved to), but NOT the one I specified. When trying to open the files from the 'recent files' list, the list shows the correct location that I've chosen but it doesn't find them (because they are saved somewhere else) and prompts a 'file not found' error. This is happening all the time and it seems it just randomly chooses from the folders I have worked from. Doesn't seem to happen with other formats, but then again, I haven't tested this thoroughly.
I have all kinds of issues ranging from very bad performance to shortcuts loosing focus and now this. It seems Photoshop CC is one of the worst releases in a long time, and it's very frustrating.

While we're at it. In earlier versions, when you saved a file with 'save as...', it would automatically point to the location from which the file was opened. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore and you have to navigate to the same place manually, this is very tedious and slows down the workflow a lot if you have to open and save many files only for small changes.

  • When working with quick selection tool (and not only) the whole psd file gets damaged.

    Hello there,
Since I first tried Photoshop CS6 on PC I encounter the following problem: when I use quick selection tool at some point the selection gets completely random and I see parts of my artwork disapear. Even after closing the file without saving the changes I see the artwork completely corrupted, without any possibility to recover. As if parts of the image were deleted.
The problem persisted after I changed to Creative Cloud on Mac (I'm running OS X 10.8.5.)
I have just seen that it also happens when I work with regular layer masks.
I desperately need to fix this problem because I cannot keep using hours of retouching work again and again.
    Hope someone can help.
    Cheers
    Julia

I am also having the same exact issue. This is the third time this has happened in about six months. I use the quick selection tool and I see a alpha mask that looks truncated and it show random parts of the image in the mask which has nothing to do with the selection. But the worst part of this is that my retouching layer the only other layer comes back completely empty even if I try to save the file in various other file types like tiff and it comes back empty. I'm losing a lot of retouching time here. I also hope some else has an answer.
    Thanks
    Mike

After file is corrupted Photoshop has to be closed and re-opened because subsequent files that are opened are corrupted.
This has been reported in CS5 and CS5.5 extensively but not so much in CS6.

Below is the steps that where used to create the corruption in the files.
    Gausian Blur corruption in Photoshop
Step 1. Create document with 3 layers + Background.
    Step 2. Layer 3 - Create a box (Red)
    Step 3. Layer 2 - Create a box (Blue)
Step 4. Layer 1 – Fill layer (Yellow)
    Step 5. Select layer 3 & 2 & scale down & press
    return
    Step 6. Change opacity of layer 1 & 2 to 25%
Step 7. Go to layer 2 and select Gaussian Blur filter
Please Note that the blue & Red Box Have changed
    colour.
As I Zoom in and out the corruption gets worse.
Sometimes this corruption dose’nt show up until you have
    saved & reopened the file.

  • Psd files are getting corrupted

    Hi
I am using PSE11 on a Mac, and have experienced PSD files getting corrupted twice now.  They are digital scrapbooking files, where I have started with a layered PSD file 'template' and personalised it (with lots of effort!).  I save it and close it.  Later I try and reopen it and it will not open.  The Adobe Photoshop Elements dialog box says 'Reading Photoshop Format' but it just gets stuck - the progress bar does not move beyond 1/3.  This is really bothersome as last time it happened I had no option but to start over and redo the layout.  Any ideas or suggestions as to why or how this might be happening?  What could I do about it?  I am reluctant to reinstall PSE, as I prefer version 11, have no disc, and last time it took many calls to Adobe to be directed to a place where I could download it (they kept telling me I would HAVE to buy the latest version.
    Thanks, J

A little more info about the files and just how you're saving them would help, as would info about your version of PSE. What color space are the files? Have you reset your PSE preferences?

  • Photoshop CS6 .psd files help

Hi, I am new on here so please excuse if this is posted in the wrong area, I have no idea where to post this.
    I Have Photoshop CS6 Extended (on Windows 7 - 64bit).
But it does not open my .psd files, only if I run Photoshop CS6 and go File > Open > "and then open the file", it will open, but If I go to the file it self it does not recognize CS6 as the default program or to open it. It tells me it cannot find a program to open the .psd file with. I have tried several times to set the Default Program but it is not even there and if I click on "browse" to find Photoshop and click "open" it does not open or show Photoshop in the Default Programs.
Now I accidently clicked on coreldraw and I don't want my .psd files opening with coreldraw! because I hardly use coreldraw, I only needed it for my studies...
When I had CS5 it worked and opened fine, with CS6 the .psd files just don't find Photoshop.
Can anyone help me please, how can I fix this so that my .psd files get recognized?
    Please it is quite frustrating.
    Thanks.

You can either uninstall and run Adobe script cleaner and then reinstall CS6 or do a registry change.
See this link, and for registry change see post # 9.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1004672?tstart=0

When I try to paste an CCI file into  a PSD, I get this message…   Could not complete the Paste command because the ICC profile is invalid.
I need the layer to be an editable smart object! What's the solution?
    Ron

I received the file from my client. However, last week I had no trouble pasting the same file into a PSD file, as a smart object.
The color file is a label mechanical, which I place into a PSD file of the product. These are used for print ads and web graphics. The color is very critical and has worked really well for the last 4 years.
I have used the default color settings in Creative Suite and its been working fine. They are in synch and, I have no idea how to re-assign the color profile. I’m a graphic Designer, color correction is not something I would do normally.

  • What is the best way to get PATHS from one Photoshop psd file to another?

Hi! New on the site, and I signed up specifically to ask the best way to import one .psd file into another, including the paths on the paths palette.
Almost all of my Photoshop drawings make heavy use of vector paths, which I then stroke using using PS natural-media brushes and the "stroke paths" function (usually with "simulate pressure" checked.) Also, my .psd files tend to be, um, HUGE... and I typically break up a whole drawing into separate PS files and then assemble all of them into one final finished graphic.
I have no trouble moving raster stuff from file to file. Just put all the layers I want to transfer into a group and drag the group to the other .psd. Works fine, including layer masks. But I have not found a good way to get vector paths from the Paths palette of one .psd to another. Of course I can select paths and copy them to the Win clipboard, switch to the other .psd, and paste them back in. The drawback to that method is that I lose the correct size relation between the results of previously done "stroke paths" operations (on raster layers) and the paths that generated them. Sometimes the copied-in paths are way too large, sometimes way too small, never Just Right.
As I'm sure most of you know, if you resize an entire Photoshop document from within PS, any paths it contains are correctly resized along with everything else. That's no longer true after grouped raster layers are dragged over to another document but paths are copied and pasted in. The size connection is lost. (Location placement, too.)
I WANT those paths! After I bring a piece of a drawing into the full final drawing, what looked good when I was working on it separately often doesn't look right any longer and I want to re-stroke those paths using different brush diameter, opacity, etc., or maybe even a completely different brush.
I've tried bring outside .psd files in as smart objects with the Place command but either that doesn't work or I'm not doing it right. Using Place, the paths in the Placed document don't come in at all.
I'll be very grateful for any hints or strategies any of you knowledgeable folks can give me. Thanks very much!
    Jim

    1. Connect the two macs - firewire, ethernet, sneakernet as suits you - and copy the iPhoto Library Folder from Old Machine to New Machine. Drag it from Home/Pictures to the same location on the new machine.
    2. Because all the files 'belong' to the account on the old machine, you have to update the file permissions: hence Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
Note: This must be run on the new machine after copying the files over.
    3. Then launch iPhoto on the new machine.

  • All my .psd files created in PSE were changed  to CS files--how can I get them back to PSE?

    Running PC, Win7, HP Pavilion dv7.  PSE6, CS4.
I use both PSE6 and CS4 depending on the project.  I am very happy with both of these elderly versions and have no desire to change.
Recently, all the projects (works in progress, .psd files) that I had created and saved using PSE suddenly converted themselves into CS4.  Literally.  I booted my computer and there were no more PSE projects.  (To see what was going on, I created a .psd file with PSE and saved it; it also saved itself as CS4.)  I can find no way to open them in PSE.  This isn't a crisis, obviously, since I can still open them in CS4.  But I prefer to work on these projects in PSE (that's why I used PSE to create them in the first place).  And it's impractical to go through a laborious process of opening in CS4 and then transferring everything to PSE, only to have it end up as CS4 again.
The only change I have made: I downloaded and installed Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) updates, upgrading the PSE from v4.2 to v5.6, and upgrading CS to v5.7.  Both installed and function without difficulty.
I will be very grateful for any advice/info that will allow me to work in the Photoshop program of my choice (PSE or CE), save and reopen in the same program.
    Update:
The problem is half solved.  Somehow CS4 was made the default for .psd files.
Unfortunately, it seems that for whatever reason, since this incident all .psd files must have the same default "Open with..." program.  If I select a PSE project and make PSE the default program to open that type of file all .psd projects--even those created and saved in CS4, show the PSE logo and open with PSE when clicked.
So basically I have to decide which one I use more, then use the "Open with..." option for the other.  Which introduces a small but noticeable hiccup into the work flow.
I'm still at a loss to understand how this happened.  Used to be that CS4 projects displayed a CS4 logo, and PSE projects displayed a PSE logo, and each would open in the correct program when clicked.
    Simple is better.

"Not typical behavior". I think not. I am yet another person this happened to. Even if I can get them back, you've just wasted an hour or two of my time. I won't be using firefox again after I've recovered my bookmarks. If I recover them. Thanks for nothing.

  • Can't Get Past Preview Unavailable for a PSD File

I know that Lightroom is unable to generate previews for PSD files if they haven't been saved with the Maximize Compatibility option. But, it seems that once you begin a preview for a folder Lightroom gets stuck in that mode even if you then go ahead and resave the file with the Maximize Compatibility option set to Always.
In a test just now I opened one of the problem files in Photoshop CS6 and saved it. Then I went back to Lightroom and tried to reimport the file but it still said Preview Unavailable. I tried toggling on/off a couple of layers and resaving but it still didn't help. So, next I actually tried making a change to the file and resaving. That still didn't work. I've tried exiting from the Import dialog in LR and restarting the import and even restarting Lightroom but nothing makes a difference.
If I save a new copy of the file in Photoshop (without changing any settings in my Photoshop preferences) Lightroom is able to show a preview and import the copy. So, the file itself is fine. In fact, it's just a simple 1MB file with a background layer and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
I've found this same behavior with both LR 4 and LR 5 Beta.
I have a lot of PSD files that I've edited over the years in Photoshop. Now, I'm considering using Lightroom but if I have to create new copies of every one of my PSD files in order to see them in Lightroom I don't know if it's going to be worth the trouble. Is there any workaround?
    David Salahi

TIFFs will hold everything that PSDs do.
That's nice to hear. However, I found that the Image Processor conversion doesn't work correctly in some cases. Here's one example. I have a file with a single image layer and which is a Smart Object. I applied a Blur Gallery Iris Blur to this object as a Smart Filter. After running the Image Processor what I got was a flattened file with no Smart Object and no blur filter. The filter effect was rasterized so it wasn't lost but the ability to edit further was.
And it gets worse. I have another file with a single Smart Object layer and a Nik Software Color Efex Pro filter applied. In this case, not only did it flatten the file, it didn't even render the effect correctly.
I played around with my preferences thinking that my Maximize Compatibility or TIFF layer-save options might be causing the problem. But, so far, I haven't been able to get the Image Processor to work correctly.
However, if I do the conversion manually I end up with a TIFF file that includes the Smart Object with Smart Filter intact. If I want to use these files with Lightroom I guess I'll have to convert each one manually.

  • Getting file compatibility error on PSD files being opened in same program they were created in.

After creating and saving a PSD file in Photoshop CC, then re-opening it on the same computer in the same program/version, I'm getting the error: Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop. This is a recent issue, but one I've now had on sseveral different files.
I'm running the latest update of CC on Mac OS 10.9. I have also tried opening the file on other computers running the same version of Photoshop, and am getting the same error.
Any ideas on how I can fix this/prevent this?

    Hi Larry,
I am embarressed to say that I am not sure! . Today was the very first day I opened illustrator.
I started with the Adobe Production Premium suite about 10 months ago. I have been focusing on After Effects and Premier mostly, with a little bit of Photoshp for good measure. The training book that I bought has information on how all the Adobe products work together. It is actually quite exciting, and I hope to polish up our workflow considerably with it.
All this said, as a result, I have not changed any of the standard default settings - this adds to my view that you and Moika are correct, that I am runnign out of space in some "Under the Hood" way when trying to save.
If I start a new project in AI and type "abiabioa"  - it saves as a .ai file fine - If I open the project PNG file given, and try to save with no edits ant all - the program closes.
It is 19H39 here now - if I go to sleep soon, it will be morning quicker and I will provide feedback! (it's Christmas time - I believe I am allowed to regress to childish thought patterns in relation to time!)

  • Placed native .psd files always "get modifed" when creating pdf

Just today started this very odd thing. ANY, any native .psd file I place into a new or old InDesign CS4 document, whether the .psd is RGB or CMYK, one layer, multiple layers, will tell me that as soon as I hit the blue "Export" button that "This document contains missing or modified links." Click Cancel and then use the Links panel to relink or update lnks or click OK to continue.
If I click cancel and update the link (which had never changed in the first place), then go to export again, it does the same thing. If I create a new document and try placing the same .psd file into the new ID document, it does the same thing. Only way I can get around this new FREAKINGLY FRUSTRATING error message is to not save the document, then export it.
I've tried trashing all the preferences, for both ID and PS, that didn't work. I've tried repairing permissions, and that didn't work.
This does not happen for .ai files or .eps (Illustrator or Photoshop). Or if I open an ID file with a .psd in it, it will tell its changed even after I've saved and closed the document.

Your description of the issue is not clear:
What format, bit depth and color was your original file "from the net"?  It sounds like it was a Color Indexed GIF, which would cause what you are describing.
In the Macintosh Finder, select said "net image" and do a Get Info on it (Command+i). When the Info box appears in the Finder, take a screen shot and upload it here by using the little camera icon in the Reply Editor in the forum's web interface.
If the image is a 256-color GIF, remember the rule:  GIGO = garbage in, garbage out.

  • Batch rename of PSD, Save as JPEG, file gets old name

I am using PS CS3 Suite. I have done a batch rename in Bridge CS3 of a folder of PSD files. When I subsequently save one as a JPEG it gets the old file name. Why?

Thanks - 7.0.1 installed and still the same problem.
I have narrowed things down a bit.
It seems if I create a new doc 2400x3000 for example I can convert it to a jpeg no problem.
If I start with 3600x3600 I get the problem. Same steps as the above file with the only difference being the size.
Anyone have a solution for this as it seems like it is size related (note that I have created at this size before and never had this problem).
    Thanks.
