PSD Files in CS6

I have been using PS Elements for some time and I am now considering moving up to CS6.  Are the PSD files I created with Elements usable in CS6?

Yes, they should be fully compatible as far as I know.

  • PSD files vanished - CS6

I am in charge of marketing at a financial institution and have a pretty vast experience with CS6 and prior versions as I use it regularly.  For a little background, I have been designing ads and marketing materials for campaigns professionally for years and using PS/CS since the original version.
I save all my files to a share drive on our server at the corporate office; it is extremely stable and have never had an issue doing so.
Recently I received a new PC for work and upon getting it set up I realized some of my project folders have the rendered PDF files inside but the original raw PSD files are completely missing.  They were not moved, nor located on the old hard drive as I stated before; this was a shared drive on our network.
All my other files; mp3/wav/mp4/.doc/favorites/pdf/tiff/jpeg/etc etc are all there and intact but it seems that folders with large numbers of PSD files are now all sans PSD documents.  Its like they vanished completely.
I searched the drives that I use regularly and my harddrive(s) but they are simply gone.
    This is detrimental.
I have seen issues like this pop up when I searched for answers but it seemed it was always user error; losing the files, hidden folders, user rights, hard drive errors, misplacement, expectations of file recovery actually working 100% of the time..
These are not recovered files, they were ones I accesed and used regularly; everything from logos, poster designs, large format billboards etc.   There are some folders with PSD files in them, some not.
No other file types are missing, this is a PSD isolated issue.
If there were missing files of all types, I would blame it on the file server but it simply isn't the case.
This is not a case of administrative rights or hidden folders.
    Any suggestions?

I've isolated it as a Photoshop related issue considering its the only file extension with issues- and there are dozens upon dozens missing.
These files were confirmed to be on the server.  Ive had a lot of these files on here for over a year accessing regularly, some more recent.  They have always been on the drive and available to me except for now.
As for us backing up files, I'm not sure but I can check.
We can rule out IT.  Our IT department wasnt in the office when the incident happened so I can rule that out unless it was some sort of automated anomaly.
PSD files werent on old PC as stated above; these files are saved to a file server.
I appreciate the help but please read entire post as most of these questions I answered are reinterations of the original message.

  • How do I resolve an apparent PSD file conflict

I upgraded from CS5 to CS6 when it was released.  A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled both CS5 and an old version of Photoshop Elements v7 that had been on my machine.
Even though I use CS6 I just noticed that when I look for or open a PSD file from CS6 that my PSD files are defined in the "Type" column as follows "PhotoshopElements.PSDFile.7"
I no longer have Elements 7 on my machine and I'm concerned that there might be an artifact from that old app that is being used by CS6 instead of current versions of PSD.
Has anybody encountered anything like this - any suggestions about how to confirm I am using only current CS6 PSD converions?
    Environment:  Windows 7, CS6, Lightroom 4.

Am I correct what your referring to in the above statement is the description for PSD file types in your window's file explorer window details view.  If so that just a string that was added to the windows registry for the file explored and not removed and is now the default description for file type PSD.  The may have happened when you removed CS5 and it restored the previous description for it though the current one was Adobe Photoshop Image file 12.  and it replaced it with the one it hade replaced in your case "PhotoshopElements.PSDFile.7"
I have had a lot of problems removing old version of Photoshop using the normal uninstall process.  Problems were always related to Window registry updates made during the uninstall process.  These days I leave the registry out of it for the most part. I remove the uninstall entry in the registry for the versions I want to remove then just wipe the  Photoshop version install tree. I leave common file and registry intact.  I also left CS5 installed for there are just too many bugs in CS6.
Most likely if you just reinstall CS6 on top of itself you will loose nothing and the registry will be updated with CS6 description for PSD files which is "Adobe Photoshop Image 13"... You do no need to its just a description.

  • Can't import any .psd files into after effects.

    Hello all.
I was using CS5 master collection without issue, for a year.
Decided to upgrade to the CS6 master collection and that’s when the problems began.
For example, I can’t import any .psd files into AE.
All files are saved in RGB mode.
The previous files were made on CS5.
I made a new .psd file in CS6 with just a couple of layers on it, couldn’t import that either.
I’ve tried Ctrl-alt-shift to delete preferences, that had limited success. I can import a file and do a little bit of work on it but as soon as I close the file down and opened it up again, it does not recognise the .psd file.
The errors I’m getting in AE are many
    For example:
After Effects warning: Reading past end of file
After Effects error: Could not open intro.psd because it is not a valid Photoshop document
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message:<8104><dynamiclink><5>C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS6\Adobe Premiere Pro exe
After Effects error: Not enough memory to initialise PSL
    I have un-installed and re-installed many times.
    I’m using Windows 8, with 32ram. Hard drives C: 100mg, D: 2 Tb
I’ve tried installing on both drives, still the same thing happens.
Does anyone out there in Adobe Land have any ideas?
    Totally confused
    Cheers,
    Gary.

    Hi Arie,
    Thanks for your response.
It actually happens with every .psd file regardless of size or specs.
All the other programs in the CS6 master collection work fine, except for AE and PS.
I tried the small file. Created a small file, 100 px by 100px 72dpi, just with a gradient background. Same thing, not enough memory to initialise PSL.
I got the adobe cleaner, and re-installed on my system (again) .... same thing.
As long as I open AE with doing ctrl-alt-shift every single time or export layers from PS individually I seem to be OK.
The problem is far from solved, so I guess i just have to put up with workarounds.
Thanks for taking the time to respond

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Photoshop CS6 - Spot channels are not saved correctly in the psd files.

    Hi,
I'm using Photoshop CS6 and something happent a few days ago....some Windows or Adobe update messed up everything...I don't know...
    Here's how things are.
If I add to an image a couple of new spot channels (any Pantone color) and remove the informations from the CMYK channels (or not-the problem it's there anyway), I should have an image with 6 color plates (CMYK and the 2 Pantone). It doesn't happened anymore...
I'm using Corel to print the files and the previous saved files are fine, I have all the Spot colors there. Now, If I edit any file I've worked on before, and save it again, the spot colors dissapear when I'm importing the psd file in my Corel document. And if there is no information on the CMYK channels, I'm getting a blank image...
I hope someone will give me some ideas because I don't know what to do anymore...
    Codrut

Right. It's not reading these new saved files correctly. The old ones are fine.
I forgot to mention one thing. I've got this CS6 as an upgrade and I still have the CS5 one running on the same computer. The CS5 version does the same thing...
Today I tryed again to open a PSD (CS6) with another CS5 version from another computer and came with an error message "Could not complete your request because the specified color book cannot be found". And the file didn't opened....
Who messed up my color book and how can I fix it?

  • I can't open up a specific .psd file in Photoshop cs6.

Well, there's a specific file I can't open. I've worked on it previously, but a week later, and it won't open. All of my other PS CS6 files are intact, and will open immediately. However, this one file takes so long to load (2+ hours) that I end up restarting my computer in order to work on all of my other things. The size isn't the issue, either; it's only 70 megabytes, as opposed to some of my more heavy-duty files that run upwards 200 megabytes.
I'm thinking about opening it on another computer to see what happens, but I'm concerned about the fact that I can't open this particular file. I'm not sure if it's corrupted, based on the fact that it just sits on my computer and just tells me that it's loading.
Is there something I can do to make it open, or modify the file? I've already tried defragging my computer and other things, and I'm at a loss here. I really don't want to start working on this from scratch, so I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Unfortunately, few have ever had much luck rescuing information from corrupted PSD files.
    Do you have a backup?

  • I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files?

I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files? What can be done so that I can either open and see the layers or how can the sender save it in a way that it doesn't "merge" the layers in some way to just one?

Could try saving as tiff provided layers and transparency are chosen at the time of saving. But it's hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on the final usage. For example PSD's tend to work better in applications like In Design in comparison with tiff.

  • CS6 Photoshop crashes when trying to use type tool or opening up .psd files. Any ideas on how to fix it???

I have Adobe CS6 Design Standard (MAC). I have had it about a year and a half and use it a ton! Just yesterday while I was using Photoshop, I clicked to use the type tool, the "initializing type tool" box popped up then a few seconds later the whole program crashed. I tried opening it back up and every time I did it just kept crashing. I restarted and shut down my computer, but still no solution. I even uninstalled the program then reinstalled. Same thing. All of my other tools work just fine (brush tool, eraser, crop, etc.). Also, when I try to open up a .psd file the program crashes as well.
I tried searching the internet for solutions, but couldn't find much. One suggestion was to delete the Adobe Photoshop program settings file, I did that but it still didn't work. After each crash a report would be sent to Adobe, then another window would pop up saying that Adobe has found a solution for the recent crash. There is a link that says "please CLICK HERE for further details" but the link doesn't take me anywhere. It just doesn't work!
Has anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas on how to fix it? I really need to get this up and running again!!!

This is a user to user forum and Adobe Staff does drop by.
First thing to try is Reset the Type Tool by right-clicking on its' icon in the Options bar.
If you still have problems, it could be related to fonts. Here is a step by step troubleshooting help doc for that.

  • FW CS6 internal error while trying to open or import CS5.5 psd file

Just installed CS6 and I'm trying to open a psd file, I see the preview of the file but cannot open or import it, I get the error message.
    Anyone can help me? thanks!

Have you tried saving the psd file in Photoshop with legacy support (Maximize Compatibility)?
If you received this psd file from an external source, it may be a Photoshop CC file. It may not be compatible with Fireworks at all. Or perhaps the psd file is corrupt - try opening it in Photoshop, and resave.
Unfortunately Fireworks' development was stopped last year by Adobe, and it is dead in the water by now. I would not expect a lot of support on their side anymore.

  • Photoshop CS6 .psd files help

Hi, I am new on here so please excuse if this is posted in the wrong area, I have no idea where to post this.
    I Have Photoshop CS6 Extended (on Windows 7 - 64bit).
But it does not open my .psd files, only if I run Photoshop CS6 and go File > Open > "and then open the file", it will open, but If I go to the file it self it does not recognize CS6 as the default program or to open it. It tells me it cannot find a program to open the .psd file with. I have tried several times to set the Default Program but it is not even there and if I click on "browse" to find Photoshop and click "open" it does not open or show Photoshop in the Default Programs.
Now I accidently clicked on coreldraw and I don't want my .psd files opening with coreldraw! because I hardly use coreldraw, I only needed it for my studies...
When I had CS5 it worked and opened fine, with CS6 the .psd files just don't find Photoshop.
Can anyone help me please, how can I fix this so that my .psd files get recognized?
    Please it is quite frustrating.
    Thanks.

You can either uninstall and run Adobe script cleaner and then reinstall CS6 or do a registry change.
See this link, and for registry change see post # 9.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1004672?tstart=0

  • PSD files aren't supported in Photoshop CS6?

Hi, I have Photoshop CS6 on my Macbook Pro OS X. But I can't open PSD files because I get the mention doesn't support it. Both Safari (gives me a gray screen) and Finder can not open it. Does anyone one know what I can do to solve this problem? I tried to find on the internet for an answer but couldn't find one that solves the solution.

Safari and finder are not suppose to be able to view the file. Safari is a web browser and therefore only supports web formats like jpg, png, and gif. Finder on the other hand I am not all that familiar with, however it should open the file in photoshop if it does not the its file association has been broken. The easiest was to fix it would be to reinstall photoshop. The biggest culprit for breaking the file association is uninstalling a previous version after the latest version was installed.
Finder may require a codec to view thumbnails of the psd format, I do not know if there is one. In windows Adobe does not provide one so It is probably a safe assumption there isn't one for the mac as well. Doing a google search may provide a 3rd party codec though.
Other than that I will need to let someone else that has a mac give you more help. Since I use windows only. Sorry about that.

  • Can't open psd files from Bridge CS6

Had both CS4 and CS6 installed, CS4 Bridge added itself when I wanted just CS6 Bridge, so uninstalled CS4.  Now cannot open psd files from SC6 Bridge.  What do I do?.

What is Bridge doing when you try to open the PSD file?  Do you get a warning, does nothing happen?  Did you open the preferences in CS6 bridge and set the file opening preferences to make sure they are set to PS CS6?

Open/file in CS6 only shows the blue psd file.  I want to see what it looks like if open.
I posted this earlier, but now I can't find it in the forum?

You could use Bridge, or depending on your operating system, use one of the codec packs that let you view PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer.  (I don't know OSX)
This seems like a popular choice for Windows 7

Personally, I just use Bridge, but I can see how an app like Sage Thumbs would be useful

Your description of the issue is not clear:
What format, bit depth and color was your original file "from the net"?  It sounds like it was a Color Indexed GIF, which would cause what you are describing.
In the Macintosh Finder, select said "net image" and do a Get Info on it (Command+i). When the Info box appears in the Finder, take a screen shot and upload it here by using the little camera icon in the Reply Editor in the forum's web interface.
If the image is a 256-color GIF, remember the rule:  GIGO = garbage in, garbage out.
