PSD files render incorrectly in Illustrator

Hi,
I have two PSD files that won't render correctly in Illustrator.  If I open the PSD files in Photoshop, everything looks OK, and if I print it, the file looks good.  But when I place it in Illustrator, part of the picture is missing, and if I print it, it doesn't show up on the page.  These are the only two files I've had trouble with and they both originated from the same company.  Is there something wrong with the photo, perhaps?  Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Here is one of the two files.  This is what it looks like in Photoshop:
And this is what it looks like in Illustrator.  Notice that much of the photo is missing.

Here is my channels panel.  I can't upload the PSD to this post, but you can access it with this GDrive link:

  • Can't open PSD file to layers in Illustrator CS6 for editing?

I need to edit a Photoshop PSD file that has layers.
I believe vector lines can be edited in Photoshop but I only have PS Elements and can only edit the text.
I do have Illustrator CS6 but when I open the PSD file it will not open to separate layers, even if I choose this in the open options.
    Maybe Illustrator cannot do this?
    Can anyone advise please?
    Thank you,
    Mike.

Although I can export as PSD from Illustrator - will PS read the layered files though?
If you set up the file accordingly: yes.
You have to take special care of some stuff. Search for it on this forum or the manual. It has been discussed here.

    What about EPS?
Forget about EPS. And especially in this context.

Yes, but only clipping masks. And only simple paths.

  • Two existing .psd files render fine in PS CC 2014, but in 2014.2.2 the output files display as mostly frozen frames.

6 months ago I created two .psd files in PS 2014.  I've since downloaded the latest PS CC 2014.2.2 which is up to date.  I tried to render both of them yesterday and in both cases the output runs for a while and then the same frame displays for- in one case the remainder of the video - and in the other it starts to play, freezes, plays, etc.   I finally tried rendering in PS CC 2014 (14.2.1 x64) and they both rendered fine.  The corrupt files out of the new version are virtually the same size as the originals (I had removed a watermark layer for this render) so they are slightly different.  Is this a known problem?

Is it a known issue? Who's to say? You have not provided any detailed info about what is going on in the files nor any system info. Could be a simple CoDec issue with some source files, but then again it could be a genuine bug, which in turn could even be specific to certain combinations of features. See how that possibly could be a little more complicated?

  • How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

    Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.
    Best Regards
    Alex.

    Importing PSD files into Illustrator
       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place.
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click Place. Make sure the Link option is selected.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
Hope this save you some time.

  • White background is shown when a psd file is inserted in illustrator

A psd file with transparent background is inserted into a AI file, I found that a white background is shown when printing. Afterwards, I checked this problem occurs on true postscript printer only. All other type of printers are not affect. What's the problem on it?

Check the overprint options. I think we had a proper post in the windows AI forum last week regarding a similar issue with AI's bitmap effects (drop shadow, I believe), so go looking for it.

  • PSD file blurry after render

I've posted this before and never could figure it out. It's only one PSD file that's doing it. I've tried changing the sequence settings to "render all yuv material in high precision yuv" and that did nothing. The vertical is divisible by 2, I checked and unchecked everything in the sequence render settings and my PSD still gets blurry after I render.
It's an 8-bit RGB and was originally an Illustrator file (RGB as well) that I converted to a PSD's. I have 13 other files and so far I've tried 2 others and they get blurry as well, but not as bad as this particular one. Please HELP!

Mike, you're probably right. But I seem to have this problem whenever I bring in psd's. And I keep trying things until something works. Unfortunately, I don't do this often enough to remember what the solution is. Perhaps editing the psd into a seperate sequence with field dominance set to none and then edit that sequence into your complete sequence. I know that I've solved this problem, just can't remember how. but resetting the field dominance to none will at least show the OP if he's on the right track.
I'll try the freeze frame thing next time, if I can remember....

  • How do I transfer a .psd file to illustrator that can then be placed in Muse as a .svg with transparent background?

I just wrote all this up in another thread.  I did not realize at the time that the last post was in 2014, so I'm giving it a go here.
I am currently trying to create an .svg using Photoshop .psd file (with layers in tact).  I'm new to these products so it may be obvious to others that the above intention was to eventually place the .svg in some sort of website creation software such as Muse.  Which is precisely what I am attempting. However, I am getting a white background once I place or copy and paste into Muse.  My starting .psd has a transparent background without any hidden layers causing this problem.  To test this I placed the .psd file into Muse and it still has a transparent background.  However when opening or placing this file into illustrator, it picks up a white background. If I do exactly as described above, I still get the same result.  So far I have tried:
    1) Simple copy and paste from Photoshop .svg to illustrator to Muse.  Result - white background.
    2) Placing the .psd in illustrator, then placing the .svg file in muse.  Result - white background.
    4) I have also tried the every combination of 1 and 2. - Result - white background.
    3) I have now created a path in Photoshop from the text layer to yet again attempt the above methods.  Result - white background.
I'm including an image of the object I am trying to place with transparent background, but I have both a flattened rasterized version, a version complete with layers and a third (.svg) with the corresponding objects.  I am completely new to Illustrator as of today so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
Link to .psd file "Welcome text"

I was having some difficulties getting the correct dimensions of one of my objects, I eventually solved this problem without using svg.  It was pretty simple when I stopped trying to over complicate things.  I just linked the object to a near by object in photoshop, merged and placed it all as one.  It looks great now.  Thanks for your reply.  You are correct, SVG was not the answer.

  • I can't open a .psd file in Illustrator CS4 after upgrading to Yosemite

I can't open a .psd file in Illustrator CS4 after upgrading to Yosemite.

Can you open any file, i.e. jpeg, etc.? Have you installed the Apple legacy Java: Java for OS X 2014-001? I'm guessing you have because you wouldn't be able to open PS at all without it. But have to ask.

  • Opening cs3  psd file in Illustrator cs3

Is this not a basic feature of the suite 3?

The file is small and is named emboss.ai

In it there is only a crop area.
I dont understand why there is a (plate image) thumbnail in the preview area when I click on the file before opening it. The file does not show any plate.

  • PSD File to Illustrator Vector - How To?

    Hello all,
    I have searched the web far and wide and can't seem to find any sufficient answer to the issue I'm having, which stems the following;
I've created a PSD file in Photoshop with some layers (stock images I've bought and some text), and I'm looking to get the design printed on a tshirt.  I am not very familiar with Illustrator, and the print company would like the files to be vector images, however, I'm not quite sure how to achieve this in order to get the quality they're looking for.  I thought the Live Trace option would be sufficient (I'm using CS6), and became quite giddy thinking it would be that easy (I should have known better), but the result is a grainy, crappy rendition of my PSD file (the original creation was a flyer for the event, and I took some elements from that flyer to turn into a tshirt).  My stock photos are of high quality (300dpi and about 8x10" in size), so I'm boggled as to why the trace feature turned them into poorly drawn cartoon characters.
I fear the answer would be I need to draw these stock photos out in Illustrator, but honestly, that's not feasible for me since I'm not very handy with the pen tool, nor do I have the time at the moment to sit down and learn all the ins and outs of this tool.    I've seen other tutorials clearly explaining how to turn rasterized text into a vector file in Illistrator, which is easy enough, but it not the highlight of my issue since I'm more concerned about the images themselves.
Is the only way to turn my design into a vector is to redraw these stock photos with the pen tool in Illustrator?
Should I have just used Illustrator to begin with to create my flyer and the tshirt design (does this also affect my stock photos or would I still be in the same boat)?
Any clarification you could provide would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

Sure thing - thanks so much for the help.
Here is a portion of the image that was sent back to me.  The original file is 300dpi, but this one just looks awful compared to the original (non-vector) image.
Original image versus the converted vector image:
I did use the high quality trace option which appeared to work great, but after having this returned to me I've been wondering where the heck I went wrong.  I checked my setting in AI to make sure I had everything set for maximum quality, so it makes me wonder if I didn't import/place the file correctly since, as you mentioned, the high quality trace feature should have replicated the design quite nicely.

  • Illustrator cs3 will not show placed .psd files

I changed my computer to a vista based operating system and installed my creative suite 3. Everything was working fine but recently I am having challenges getting illustrator cs3 to show placed .PSD files. They appear to import but do not display. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be helpful. I already tried a repair/reinstall of illustrator but that did not work. I can place .psd images into In Design so I am not sure why illutrator is not allowing .PSD files to import and display.

    Harron K. Appleman wrote:
Did you upgrade to 64-bit Vista by any chance?
Are your PSD images 16-bit by any chance?
The problem with this scenario is that since Illustrator, any version does not support 16 bit psd files and CS 3 and 4 will place the file anyway but give you a notice that it is placing it as 8 bit. So unless there is something about  Vista XP or W7 64 bit that prevents Illustrator fro converting then that is probably not the issue. And though the warning says it flattens it will preserve a transparent background.
So it might be a different issue.

  • Unable to place Photoshop psd file in Illustrator CS3

    Hi,
    Can someone help please???
I am unable to place a Photoshop PSD file in Illustrator and be able to print the document correctly. The Illustrator file is saved as a ai file, both the document & PSD file are CMYK.
On screen the document looks fine but as soon as I have printed the document, some of file has not printed.
Do I need to have the Illustrator file as a eps file?
I used to use an old Photoshop version that had a Export Image option, which was great for something like this, but CS3 doesn't have this option.
Has anybody got any ideas what I am doing wrong?

This seems to be an Illy problem, not Photoshop. You might want to check
with the gurus there, but perhaps a few details, like what printer
you're using and a few screenshots might help.

  • Can you link an imported psd file in Illustrator CS4 instead of embedding?

Seems that in CS4 the default is to embed a psd file. I have been unable to find a way to link if I want to. CS3 seems to default to linking which I prefer.

    In Illustrator
    File > Place
select your file but don't hit OK
at the bottom of the window you will see 3 options:
    "Link"
    "Template"
    "Replace"
    check link and hit Ok.

  • Why can't Illustrator CS6/CC place PSD files properly?

I have been using Adobe products for over 15 years and one of the main features I use is placing PSD files within Illustrator and then creating my text so that is remains vector. Being a recent Creative Cloud Team member and seeing that both CS6 and CC do not allow a user to place a PSD inside of Illustrator without drastically reducing the image baffles me!!!
For example create a 500x500 pixel 300dpi document in Photoshop and save as PSD. Then open Illustrator and create a document the EXACT SAME SIZE. Go to file place and try to place the PSD you just created. Notice that it will not place at the correct size???
I don't see how this big of an oversight can be overlooked. I have also noticed that when using the PANTONE Solid Color palette within Illustrators Color Books, with persistence turned on also still does not work. This has been a problem I have noticed for over 5 years!!! Even with workspaces saved this problem persist to this day.
I am on a BRAND NEW iMac out of the box so it is not a computer or user issue.
Can someone please help me with a solution to the above issues. As a Creative Director for a marketing and advertising agency I don't see how these two issues have not perplexed others as they both are part of my day to day work flow and are now hendering how I perform my daily job as a designer.
Any solutions or tips or tricks to eliminate the above mentioned issues are greatly appreciated.

you are correct by stating that the file will open, but if you go to document setup and then go to edit art boards you can see that the image size is actually much smaller than the original that you created. this is a major bug as i create a lot of my dynamic backgrounds in photoshop and then place them in illustrator to do my typography. i have been using photoshop and illustrator for over 15 years so i can not see them deleting this feature or overlooking the fact that it does not work, but then again who knows!!! they did in fact delete the AOM from Bridge which was the one main feature that i used and loved about the program. for products with this price range i can not see why they would delete such a vital feature to the program.
again just looking for a solution and i appreciate your quick response to this. hopefully we will start something that adobe will actually see and help us out with. it has slowed my production within the programs down to a sluggish crawl

  • Problem placing PSD file in Illustrator

    G'day,
My problem is when i place PSD file into illustrator, it opens up "Photoshop Import Option" menu,
    which lets me choose either:
    (1) convert photoshop layers to objects (or)
    (2) Flatten photoshop layers to a single image
all other options are greyed out (meaning i cannot select them)
The above 2 options will embed the image into illustrator, thus when i update in photoshop, they will not auto update.
I dont have this problem in the past (which means i dont get this menu when i use the place function) but it just poped up the last week.
But when i open OLD illustrator files which have PSD images not embeded, i am able to edit the PSD and illustrator will auto update.
Please help it is really frustrating to keep placing PSD files everytime when i have changes.
    Thanks!

    Hi Steve,
May i know what is the place dialogue box are you referring to?
The Place dialogue box that i get (when i press file>place) is the image below:
As you can see i dont have any "link" button to check or uncheck. I can either flatten the psd or convert to object.
My Problem is I would really like to link back the psd file for easy updates but i am not able to.
    Pls help thx!~
