PSD Import

Just a quickie, but I just can't seem to find the info no matter what criteria I Google...
I'm currently using Captivate 6...I'm beginning a project and the task manager has offered to get me Captivate 8...not really interested in the new learning curve, but every version of Captivate I've used brings in Photoshop (PSD) files as the layers they are, but the text layers are converted to images as well...
Does Captivate 8 import Photoshop text as editable text?

Thanks Lilybiri,
I knew if there was a definitive answer, you'd have it
But to answer your question, I had to create mockups for the entire training for visual approval by the client...e.g. Photoshop. And since I can import a layered Photoshop file, having the text come in as "editable" would just save an enormous amount of time. I guess I thought that since I could copy and paste (editable) text from Photoshop into Captivate (with all the attributes in tacked--font family, color, bold/italic/condensed etc.) that the import process would work for text in the same fashion.
And again, thanks. If I ever hit the lottery, I'm going to sponsor whatever project your heart desires...not kidding!!!

  • PSD Import Issues

I'm having trouble importing an 8-bit/RGB PSD file with 4 layers. One layer is a Smart Object, two are text layers, and the other is a standard image layer. When I tried to import this from the welcome screen using the default settings, Smart Object layer did not import. I rasterized the Smart Object back in PS, then tried again and now none of the layers import.
I tried saving the image as a new file and rasterizing all of the layers and reimporting, but still none of the layers import. I even flattened the image and noting is imported. Each time, the dialog states the layers are empty.
I tried a few other PSD files, and it seems that only text layers will import.
    Am I missing something?
    I'm using XP on a Core 2 1.86Ghz with 2 GB RAM
    Andre

Thanks for your quick response, Brian!
Okay, when I import the PSD, I go with the default options (Image Layers: Keep Editable; Shape Layers: Flatten; Text Layers: Keep Editable; Import Non-Visible Layers is checked). The Text Layer "THE CRITIC" in the PHOTOS Folder doesn't show and the 2nd lines of the NAV 1 & NAV 4 Text Layers are invisible as well. Also, the original PSD was just over 11mb so I had to delete a bunch of content (it had all imported fine) to get it below the uploading limit. Now originally, one of the Text Layers in the PAINTINGS Folder was missing as well, but after the mass-deletion of layers, it now shows. Strange. Anyway, I hope this helps to get to the root of the problem...I've told you all I know (which admittedly isn't much).

  • CS6 PSD Import Issue

DISCLAIMER: we are using PPro in what can be argued is an unorthodox manner.
The project requires importing numerous (200+) PSD files per episode. Each PSD file contains groups. When these PSDs are imported into PPro, grouped layers are 'ungrouped' and simply stacked as normal video layers on top of all the other layers (which were not in groups) from the PSD. Maintaining the structure of the PSD file upon import is imperative to the workflow.
Obviously, the editor could re-group (nest) the affected layers;however, this is prohibitive when taking into consideration the complexity of the PSD structures, the number of files as well as the project schedule.
    **HOLD THAT THOUGHT**
    Workaround!?
In order to make the WHOLE process more efficient, we decided to:
    1. FIRST import ALL the PSD files into AE
    2. Save the project as a PPro Project
    3. Open that PPro project created by AE
    ...and VIOLA!!
All the PSD files are now in PPro with just a few clicks AND the PSD files have maintained their structure ( groups are respected and appear as nested sequences)!!
    So what is the problem?
PPro shows most, but not all, of the media as offline. There is no pattern to what it decides is offline. The number of nests does not seem to be a factor. It simply appears as though there is some issue with how PPro is translating PSD groups into PPro nests.
Since rebuilding the desired structure of these files is a bigger task than relinking the offline layers, we opt for the latter. But this  'solution' requires someone (to be hired) to relink the offline layers - a task that on one episode took 3.5 hours. A bug? An oversight? A misplaced regular expression in the code (hopefully its that trivial)? Suggestions on alternate workflow within the Adobe lineup?
    Thanks!

It's hard to understand what's going offline here.  Does everything look okay in AE?  If so, why don't you simply import the AE comp into PPro directly & drop the comp on the timeline?  I'm not understanding what the extra step of saving it via AE as a PPro project buys you...

  • Psd import strangeness ....

    i have a layered psd that is 851 x 851 pixels at 72 dpi.
when i import as "merged layers" the graphic is automatically rescaled to the size of the canvas (pal sd), when i use "all layers" the graphic is imported at normal size.
    is this expected behaviour?
can't seem to find any reference to this in the manual in the section on importing psd (page 178) ....

    hi nipsey,
thanks for this suggestion! it does seem to solve this issue
this has been driving me up the wall for almost a day before the weekend...
the problem is that, yes not all layers are 851 x 851. but all layers seem to be scaled by the same amount when they are scaled and this only happens when they are imported with merged layers.
why this behaviour is different for separate and for merged layers is unclear to me. neither topics on pages 112, 165 or 177 and related of the manual seem to make this distinction....
i'll test if this also relates to my question about weirdness when copying layers with large graphics (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=451584&tstart=0 )

  • PSD import losing text

I have a PSD with several text layers that fill the layer vertically and extend beyond the visible edges horizontally. For example, one is the word general. In the PSD it is positioned with the 'ene' in the center of the document, but I can scroll to reveal the remaining letters. When I bring the PSD into PPro it only shows the 'ene' and I can no longer scroll to reveal the remaining letters.
I've tried importing individual layers and as a sequence selecting layer size and document size. The PSD is the same dimensions as the PPro project. I'm not sure what else to try and haven't been able to find any further instructions.
Does anyone know what I need to do so that I can import the layer with the full word? Both the PSD and PPro project are in CS6 on a Mac running OSX 10.6.8.
    Thanks

With an Imported PSD, there is not really a "scroll," per se.
However, to reveal material, that is effectively "cropped" by the Frame Size, you can adjust the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position.
I create a lot of Titles in PS, and use multiple Text Layers, as I often want to animate the Layers separately. I always create those on a New Image, that is the exact pixel x pixel dimensions, as my Project's Frame Size (sounds like about what you are doing), OR will create them, so that I can animate Motion>Position, to create a Roll. I also create the New Image with Guides for Title Safe Area. In the case of a Roll, I only use the width, and not the height, since I will animate to reveal the Text that is initially off-screen.
Check out Motion>Position, to see if you do have all of your Text, but are just not seeing it.
If you do not wish to do a Roll, redo the Titles, and keep all Text within the Title Safe Area.
Good luck, and let us know if that Text IS there, but just effectively cropped by the Frame Size.

  • Workaround (??) for layered PSD imported as flatenned PSD problem.

So first the fact that Aperture does not support importing layered PSD files is a huge problem (BUG/Feature) that's gotta get fixed.
In the mean time, I found out below:
    * When a file is imported, it is saved in a bundle in Aperture Library under:
    ProjectName.approject.
    * Right-click and Show Package Contents on the bundle.
    * You will see a bunch of folders that end with .apimportgroup. (If you did a single import into that project then there is only one.)
    * You can either open those folders or search using Spotlight for the file name. Aperture stored each file in a dedicated folder under the .apimportgroup folder. So if you use spotlight look at the folder with the same file name of the image.
    * Good News: Aperture still has the original PSD file with the layers in that folder.
    * Now go back to Aperture and open that image with "Open With External Editor" and after it opens just save and close Photoshop without doing anything.
    * Now Aperture created a new folder for you with the name as "ImageName 1". Go back to Finder and open that folder. In that folder you will now see the flattened PSD file.
    * Copy the original PSD file from the original folder into the newly created folder overriding the flattened PSD file. (Agree to replace the file when the dialog pops up.)
    * Go back to Aperture. Now if you open the versioned file with Photoshop you will get back your layers!!
So as you can see it is very easy to import PSD files with layers. Now repeat the above procedure for your other 10000 PSD files and you will be done. (Automator anyone??)
    Cheers!
    PowerMac G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It seems from what I've seen that the problem isn't in importing layered PSDs, they import fine, and if you do an export from master, you will get an untouched copy of your layered file. The problem is that if you "Open in External Editor" when your master is a PSD, Aperture has to make a version of that file before it opens it in PSD, and the version that it makes is flattened.
So it looks like this would work to deal with this, but what a kludge!

  • A single PSD imported but has buttons within

I imported a single PSD with 88 layers as buttons. When I double click on the PSD, to break apart, I creat new symbols of 88 buttons. But when I run the program, flash dosen't see the buttons within the PSD. The EventListener can't see the buttons because they are within the single PSD file. I did the buttons one by one, but when scrolling through the 88 buttons, the buttton move closer together as scrolling, That's why I made a single PSD so they don't move.
I am using Flash Professional CS5

Are you not using the import function in the File menu? Ordinarily, when you import a .ps file into Flash you will get a window that will allow you to set the layers that are to be imported and the method used to import  those layers. If you Select to import Photoshop's layers as Flash layers then each of your Photoshop layers will be imported as individual bitmaps on their own layers into Flash.
Then you can select each individual item and set it to be a button if you like.

  • Unsupported format or damaged file with .psd import

I have several PSD files I am importing into Premiere Pro CS4 and with one I am receiving this error message, "Unsupported format or damaged file."
The file opens in Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator but not in Premiere. I tried it using the import command as well as dragging and dropping but I get the error both ways. I even tried resaving it in photoshop as a PSD file under a different name but still no luck. Other PSD files that were created the same way and from similar source materials are importing fine. The file was from originally an EPS file and was exported from Illustrator as a PSD.
Any ideas what is going on?
    Thanks for any input.
    Cole

    Glad that you found that.
For Video, the PSD's need to be RGB, and not CMYK or Intexed Color. They need to be 8-bit. Paths can cause issues, though not always, and the same for Smart Objects (some work fine, and others muck things up???). Often, tiny pixel counts in a Layer (think something very small, like a logo, in a much larger Image), can cause issues.
    Good luck,

  • Indesign newb: PSD import looks low res in Indesign

    Hello!
I was assigned to make a product catalog from some product shots. The catalog is going to be printed on B5 sized paper. Being a complete newb in Indesign I made the entire catalog in separate PSD files . Now I would like to place those PSDs into one Indesign document. I do a File > Place for every PSD.
The problem: all the imported PSD look very low res, despite the fact that they are 300dpi, B5 sized. Going to Object > Display Performance > High Quality does nothig to improve the situation. I'm not the one that's going to print the catalog so I have no idea how bad it'll look on paper.

Are we talking about just images here, or entire pages with type as well (I hope not). if there is vector content or type in your .psd files, leave it live and save as Photoshop PDF, then place that. ID rasterizes all vector content in placed .psd files.  You say these are 300 ppi. Is that what the info panel says  for Effective Resolution when you select one? Are the links up to date?

  • AI vs PSD Import to Flash CS4 - Difference in Quality?

I have a bunch of vector and bitmap images I'm importing into Flash CS4 from Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
I can import the PSD directly into Flash
    and AI directly into Flash
    or
import the PSD into Illustrator, then import ONLY an AI into Flash.
Is there any degredation in the quality of the bitmaps, if I send them through Illustrator?
    Thanks

    hey xchanin,
My question is whether a bitmap loses quality if it goes from photoshop through illustrator to flash. I think illustrator files tend to import a little better into flash than photoshop files.
I do agree that vector is sharper in most cases. I try to keep all of my text & basic graphics as vector. Most of my bitmaps are full blown illustrations though.
    Thanks!

  • VERY slow CS3 psd import

I've just done a test that makes me despair. I imported a PSD file with spot channels into Illustrator CS3. It's a 90MB file, it took 1 minute, and had a dialog up most of the time saying "generating pixels". I then did the same test on my other mac running CS2. Result - 4 Secs.
    WTF is going on?

    Hi all
    Happy New Year.
Did anyone manage to determine the cause of the problem because we've had this issue on and off with MacPro and PowerMac machines using CS3. Some have lots of RAM and still have the problem. Takes 5 minutes+ to load the file.
What does 'generating pixels' actually mean? Google drew a blank.
    Cheers

  • Importing psd into premiere pro cs4 failure

I am running an xp 64bit comp with the master suite, when i try to import a simple psd file into premiere i get an error message stating unsupported format or damaged file. Also another problem I am having is importing mp4's, it simply doesnt happen. It is all on a fresh brand new machine which might be missing codecs or something like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
    Adam

Yes, CMYK (can affect TIFF's too) has tripped up many. As much of my work is for print, I hit that early on, and scratched my head, until I grabbed the RGB version (usually give clients both), and viola, it worked.
Another similar tripping point is 16/32-bit PSD's. If one works with Camera RAW, they often leave the files in a higher bit-depth, for better color, Levels and Curves editing, but forget to drop this to 8-bit for Video. All of my Actions include the Mode changes, just in case they are not already in the correct Mode.
Good luck, and glad that things are working.
    Hunt
PS - there have been some reports of PSD Importing failing, though all else is good, when one, or more Layers, contain only a very small pixel count. This often happens when one has a very small "logo," or similar in a much larger PSD. I've not hit this, but many have. One fix is to separate out the logo, and Import it a bit larger, then Scaling in PrPro. Personally, where possible, I like to keep the Scaling to an absolute minimum in PrPro, and do as much as is possible in PS.

  • Importing PSD's into Flash

I'm using Flash 8, and have just started importing PSDs into
Flash. I actually found the import PSDs feature in CS3, and
discovered that you can import PSDs to Flash 8 as well.
The problem is, there is a color shift-the PSDs imported into
Flash appear lighter than they do in PS, or than a JPEG of the same
image appears when imported into Flash. I have noticed the same
problem with PNG's as well. They also appear lighter than a JPG of
exactly the same image when brought into Flash....
Does anyone know of any fix for this? Is it something to do
with color-profiles in PhotoShop (of which I know little about)?
    Thanks!

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Import linked PSD CS3

    Hi all!
I want to "import" PSD files in mu flash movies and not edit
    them in
Flash... Before CS3 the PSD files kept a link and in the
    library there was
an option "Edit with Photoshop" .... IS it still possible to
    import PSD like
this> When i select "Flattened" in de PSD-importer
    preferences it still
imports like a new unlinked item in the Flash library!
    Anyone
    Thanx in Advance,
    Martin

Don't get your hopes up.  I'm on the forum looking for a fix for CS5 for the same problem. I've also tried all the different presets, but Encore INSISTS on transcoding the file every time I do a build.   It takes several hours to run a build to folder, and it bloats the files from 12GB to 24.99GB. Project is H.264 BluRay, 720x480, AME exported with HIGH bitrate, 16x9 NTSC, Dolby Digital audio, and no multiplex. No matter what transcode settings I use in Encore, it always shows the files (video assets) as Untranscoded, and Transcode set to Automatic.

    Found an answer?
Don't use the Premiere (AME) export settings for bitrate (low/medium/high).  Use Custom instead, and set the Max Bit rate to one of the xxMB rates listed under Transcode Preferences in Encore.  The Target Bitrate can be lower, but Encore WILL force transcode if the Max Rate is not one of it's pre-wired settings.

  • Importing PSD or PNGS? (Transparent)

Since Flash CS3 imports PSDs, should I continue importing
    PNGS and JPEGS?
I am importing Transparent PSDs and find the published file
swf size is a little smatter than when I import transparent PNGs.
What is the rule of thumb with Flash CS3 and importing?
    Thanks for your help.

there is no rule of thumb - the PSD import wizard is an added
and welcomed feature if you are
working with layered PSD files and Flash - but if you have a
single PNG then that's fine to import
    on its own also.
As for file size - there may be a difference between a PNG
and the same PNG in a PSD file - I have
    never tested it.
